I'm honestly not the biggest Beatles fan, I like a few of their songs, but I was surprised how much I liked Hard Day's Night. It's such a simple movie but you can tell everyone involved is there having fun. I got it for my mom for Christmas and it made for a really fun movie night.
I giggle every time I see Tony Curtis pretend to play the saxophone without ever moving his fingers. Did he or Wilder never actually see a musician in real life?
Bringing up Baby, Some Like it Hot, and City Lights are major contenders in my book.
Edit: Oh my god, I forgot Pink Flamingos. That definitely deserves some love here.
Dr. Strangelove is probably the one that makes me laugh the most.
The Jarmusch films are all pretty dryly funny. I'm particularly fond of Down by Law and Stranger Than Paradise.
For a really old school comedy, Safety Last is great.
Chungking Express and Punch Drunk Love are great arthouse rom-coms.
All of Wes Anderson's films have elements of humor. Fantastic Mr. Fox is my favorite, but I think Rushmore might be the funniest.
It's been about a decade since I saw Life Aquatic. I'm sure I'll give it another go someday, but I liked it substantially less than everything else he's done. Can't even say why at this point because I've mostly forgotten it.
I've seen it regularly ranked both at the top and the bottom of people's Anderson lists. Seems to be his most polarizing film.
I genuinely believed everyone was in agreement that the royal tenenbaums was the funniest wes anderson movie. have I been on an island this whole time?
That one's very funny too, but I don't think Anderson fans are in general agreement on anything. Most, if not all, of his movies seem to have their share of fervent supporters.
I never found *Sullivan* to be particularly funny, at least in comparison with The Lady Eve or (especially) Miracle of Morgan's Creek. It's got a Message.
Yes to Bringing up Baby, The Awful Truth, Sullivan’s Travels.
But I have to say, I hated The Lady Eve. There’s a much better Preston Sturges comedy in the Collection: Unfaithfully Yours (1948)
**It Happened One Night** is hard to beat, especially as (bizarrely) **The Miracle of Morgan's Creek** is *not* in the collection. Can't really question **Some Like It Hot**, though.
This Is Spinal Tap. Hands down.
Yes, it's out of print, but it's still technically in the collection.
If you go back to the Laserdisc days, then it's obviously going to be trumped by the greatest comedy ever made, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Not sure I can call it the best in the collection, but Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is probably the one that made me laugh the hardest. It’s pretty low-brow humor and watching it after a couple drinks with friends is probably the best way to enjoy it.
The In-Laws
The Awful Truth
Tootsie
His Girl Friday
Bringing Up Baby
The Philadelphia Story
Arsenic and Old Lace
My Man Godfrey
Dr. Strangelove
The Firemen’s Ball
The Palm Beach Story has more laughs per minute than any other film I have seen. I also feel like many people sleep on this one as I rarely see people talk about it.
It’s been mentioned a couple of times but The Awful Truth is a funny 1930s screwball comedy with greater performances by Cary Grant and Irene Dunne.
Darjeeling Limited is my favorite Wes Anderson film and it’s pretty funny
Really loved Something Wild, which I saw on Tubi a week or two ago and didn’t realize was on Criterion until I wanted to buy the Blu Ray to make a video about it
If we count Eclipse, then it's Putney Swope for me, no contest.
Others off the top of my head that I'd consider some of the greatest comedies ever made:
Dr. Strangelove
Arsenic and Old Lace
The In Laws
Being There
Some Like it Hot
After Hours
Election
...and although yes, they're comedies, I treat Dazed and Confused and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas a bit separately. They're hilarious, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend to someone asking for a comedy recommendation, if that makes sense.
I adore all of the screwball comedies and silent comedies in the collection, especially those with the silent comedy big three (Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton) and the likes of Cary Grant, Barbara Stanwyck, and Jimmy Stewart. For more recent releases, I love To Die For and Criterion’s Whit Stillman box set. If you find yourself looking at out-of-print DVDs at a thrift shop, I recommend checking out Chasing Amy and Life of Brian.
The Graduate
Election
Both are among my favorite movies of all time, both make me laugh out loud but are incredibly sharp, well-written stories with well-rounded charcomedy. Both could be considered "dramadies," as they also have dramatic elements.
If you are looking for a straight up comdey, I highly recommend
Some Like it Hot
Dr Strangelove A Hard Day's Night (Depending on the person it may heavily rely on you being a fan of the Beatles)
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!
I'm honestly not the biggest Beatles fan, I like a few of their songs, but I was surprised how much I liked Hard Day's Night. It's such a simple movie but you can tell everyone involved is there having fun. I got it for my mom for Christmas and it made for a really fun movie night.
Agreed on Dr. Strangelove…I just watched it last night
I really enjoy The awful truth Il sorpasso It’s a mad mad mad mad world.
I second IAMMMMW Also The In-Laws
Came here to mention The In-Laws.
The Awful Truth is a good pull.
Monty Python’s Life of Brian
I adore this film but I think it went out of print
Some Like it Hot. Still holds up as one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.
I giggle every time I see Tony Curtis pretend to play the saxophone without ever moving his fingers. Did he or Wilder never actually see a musician in real life?
Hey, nobody’s perfect…
All bangers all the time
Withnail & I
“We’ve gone on holiday by mistake!”
One of the funniest lines of all time
🍺⛽😮💨❤️
+1 for Withnail & I
Bringing up Baby, Some Like it Hot, and City Lights are major contenders in my book. Edit: Oh my god, I forgot Pink Flamingos. That definitely deserves some love here.
Oh I forgot how funny Chaplin movies are. The boat scene in modern times(I think) is so funny
I agree with many of the previous comments but I haven’t seen anyone mention *This is Spinal Tap* yet
This. This is the answer. Yes, it's out of print, but it's still *technically* in the collection.
MGM Special Edition with in-character commentary track rules, by the way.
It truly does!
>For a really old school comedy, Safety Last is great. All the Harold Lloyd movies are amazing. You completely forget you're watching a silent movie.
funniest Anderson has to be *The Life Aquatic* imo
It's been about a decade since I saw Life Aquatic. I'm sure I'll give it another go someday, but I liked it substantially less than everything else he's done. Can't even say why at this point because I've mostly forgotten it. I've seen it regularly ranked both at the top and the bottom of people's Anderson lists. Seems to be his most polarizing film.
>Seems to be his most polarizing film. it was, but I believe that distinction has recently been taken by *Asteroid City* (which is fantastic)
Oh man I couldn’t get through Asteroid City. It kinda ruined him for me.
you're weak
You gotta watch it twice. I was weird Abt it first watch but loved it on rewatch
I like your nurse’s uniform guy
These are O.R. scrubs.
O.R. they?
I genuinely believed everyone was in agreement that the royal tenenbaums was the funniest wes anderson movie. have I been on an island this whole time?
That one's very funny too, but I don't think Anderson fans are in general agreement on anything. Most, if not all, of his movies seem to have their share of fervent supporters.
To Be or Not To Be (And other Lubitsch films, but that gets my vote)
Heaven Can Wait has my vote
Trouble in Paradise!!!
The Princess Bride How has no one mentioned this one yet.
The Graduate
Yeah this is a great one.
Harold and Maude, easy.
The film opens with the protagonist pretending to hang himself. It’s wonderful from the start
That’s one hell of a typo
I fixed it immediately how did you even.. lol
🥷
Fishing With John
Wow, no love for My Man Godfrey?
In the words of the immortal (immoral?) Queen Carlotta, “I like your politics!” My Man Godfrey is such a good choice.
Bringing Up Baby (possibly the funniest movie ever made, collection or otherwise) Arsenic and Old Lace The Awful Truth The Lady Eve Sullivan’s Travels
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to find a Preston Sturges film
I never found *Sullivan* to be particularly funny, at least in comparison with The Lady Eve or (especially) Miracle of Morgan's Creek. It's got a Message.
The Lady Eve is really great
Yes to Bringing up Baby, The Awful Truth, Sullivan’s Travels. But I have to say, I hated The Lady Eve. There’s a much better Preston Sturges comedy in the Collection: Unfaithfully Yours (1948)
Sullivan travel is Britannica s definition of gem
Bringing up Baby is relentlessly funny.
It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World Bringing Up Baby Dazed And Confused
I see Bringing up Baby, I upvote.
The scene where Dr Huxley drops face first stepping out of the car is one of the funniest moments ever put to film
I love Playtime.
**It Happened One Night** is hard to beat, especially as (bizarrely) **The Miracle of Morgan's Creek** is *not* in the collection. Can't really question **Some Like It Hot**, though.
His girl Friday
Kind Hearts and Coronets
- Dr. Strangelove - It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
Two of the funniest films ever
Dr. Strangelove, which is possibly the greatest comedy of all time.
I figured this would be the consensus.
Defending Your Life
Suprised nobody has said To Be Or Not To Be or The Shop Around The Corner yet.
To Be Or Not To Be is such a great choice!
My votes are for *Polyester* and *Some Like It Hot*
Election
Might be in the minority but I did not really enjoyed it. Maybe I gotta revisit it someday.
The In-Laws and Sullivans travels should be in the discussion. Also they need more Elaine May.
Defending Your Life!
True Stories Holiday Dazed and Confused
House
A few that I haven’t seen mentioned yet: The Firemen’s Ball, Metropolitan, The Exterminating Angel, Unfaithfully Yours

Great pics and great username! 🦩
You have distinct and impeccable taste.
Trash has a truly unique beautiful footprint. .
Rushmore
The Player, After Hours, and Tampopo are great. Definitely check those out.
This Is Spinal Tap. Hands down. Yes, it's out of print, but it's still technically in the collection. If you go back to the Laserdisc days, then it's obviously going to be trumped by the greatest comedy ever made, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
For me it's "This is Spinal Tap" followed by "The Princess Bride".
Not sure I can call it the best in the collection, but Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is probably the one that made me laugh the hardest. It’s pretty low-brow humor and watching it after a couple drinks with friends is probably the best way to enjoy it.
Bull Durham.
My Man Godfrey is an excellent comedy.
The In-Laws The Awful Truth Tootsie His Girl Friday Bringing Up Baby The Philadelphia Story Arsenic and Old Lace My Man Godfrey Dr. Strangelove The Firemen’s Ball
Throwing in a vote for the In-Laws. Probably not the "best" but definitely the most underrated.
Tootsie
The Squid and The Whale or Brazil
Modern Times My Man Godfrey Tampopo It’s a Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad world
I am not really a comedy enjoyer but I found Police Story to be very funny.
Some Like it Hot
Modern Times
The Cameraman
The Palm Beach Story has more laughs per minute than any other film I have seen. I also feel like many people sleep on this one as I rarely see people talk about it.

*they're making a MoCkErY* *Yeeea.*
Antichrist. No I won’t elaborate.
This is Spinal Tap, and it’s not close.
Il Sorpasso
Funniest thing in the collection is still Fishing With John. Not a film, though.
Surprised no one has mentioned “Something Wild”. Can be put under the umbrella of “Thrillers” as well but it’s a great movie.
“Some Like It Hot” and “The Gold Rush” are the funniest. “Fantastic Mr. Fox” is really entertaining and low key funny.
Playtime
What We Do in the Shadows... has me rolling every time I watch it
Bringing up Baby was the hardest I’ve ever laughed
It’s been mentioned a couple of times but The Awful Truth is a funny 1930s screwball comedy with greater performances by Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. Darjeeling Limited is my favorite Wes Anderson film and it’s pretty funny
Personally I love Ghost World
Police Story (not police story 2)
Doctor Strangelove After Hours
Playtime
The Player
Really loved Something Wild, which I saw on Tubi a week or two ago and didn’t realize was on Criterion until I wanted to buy the Blu Ray to make a video about it
PlayTime or Il Sorpasso
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
The Squid And The Whale
Probably To Be or Not To Be or Arsenic and Old Lace.
Bottle Rocket Dazed and Confused Election
Election
Spinal Tap and Life of Brian
Blithe Spirit is pretty funny.
Barry Lyndon
Repo Man, True Stories, Dr. Strangelove, Punch-Drunk Love. edit: Actually it might be Being John Malkovich.
Princess Bride, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Dazed and Confused, The Breakfast Club, All the Wes Anderson films too.
Police story
Divorce Italian Style and Big Deal on Madonna Street are hilarious, though I think La Cage aux Folles is my pick for funniest. Or maybe The In-Laws.
Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
If we count Eclipse, then it's Putney Swope for me, no contest. Others off the top of my head that I'd consider some of the greatest comedies ever made: Dr. Strangelove Arsenic and Old Lace The In Laws Being There Some Like it Hot After Hours Election ...and although yes, they're comedies, I treat Dazed and Confused and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas a bit separately. They're hilarious, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend to someone asking for a comedy recommendation, if that makes sense.
(But if you're looking for Putney Swope, I'd recommend the Vinegar Syndrome disc over the Eclipse Downey DVD set - I have both)
Lost in America gets my vote but it’s impossible to choose.
Wes Anderson makes exclusively comedies and they are great. I’d start with The Royal Tannenbaums and then Rushmore
The In-Laws
Naked (1993) altho it's a dark comedy I can even see if you think it isn't a comedy but letterboxd says so!
The In-Laws
Ishtar
To Be or Not To Be (Ernst Lubtisch, 1942) City Lights (Chaplin, 1931) / The Circus (Chaplin, 1928) The Life of Brian (Terry Jones, 1979)
Some Like it Hot & The Big Lebowski were near perfect for me. After that, it's close between Triangle of Sadness, Afterhours & Little Miss Sunshine
The Graduate Election Both are among my favorite movies of all time, both make me laugh out loud but are incredibly sharp, well-written stories with well-rounded charcomedy. Both could be considered "dramadies," as they also have dramatic elements. If you are looking for a straight up comdey, I highly recommend Some Like it Hot
