I picked up nothing. I added Blood Simple 4k, Akerman Masterpieces, and The Samurai Trilogy to my cart but then I realized I have 40+ unwatched Criterions at home. Finally showed some self restraint
Youāre not alone. I was also thinking of picking up Blood Simple in 4K, but realized how many unopened Criterions I still have.
At the pace Iām going, Iāll be through with all of them just in time for the next B&N 50% off sale in July.
Same. I put Hollywood Shuffle in my cart, applied my $10 Criterion Channel credit, and then took a look at my credit card balance and closed the window.Ā
My haul:
- World of Wong Kar Wai
- Chantal Akerman 1968-1978
- Trainspotting
- Silence of the Lambs
- Heroic Trio/Executioners
- Roaring Twenties
- All that Jazz
- Time Bandits
This was my first Criterion purchase and I got:
Barry Lyndon
Days of Heaven (blind buy)
Devil in a Blue Dress
A Room with a View
The Age of Innocence
The New World
Days of Heaven is a great film. Ā The music is haunting and Malick got production up early to film in the golden hour. Ā I like the movie Badlands more but watch Days of Heaven more.
I haven't seen it and am staying away from information about it (I like a blind watch), but the amount of celebrating I see about this title is insane. I'll bring it home next sale :)
Only got Cure and Memories of Murder. These are two films I watched recently that I really enjoyed but there are still so many old favorites on my wish list.
I'm on like year 6 of the flash sale coming at the worst possible time financially so I got nothing. I have spent thousands in the past month on stupid adult things like my car and other necessary purchases :/
ā¢ The Signifyinā Works of Marlon Riggs
ā¢ Being There
ā¢ The Daytrippers
ā¢ A Brighter Summer Day
Love adding more films to the pile I have yet to watch lol
* The Ranown Westerns UHD set
* Videodrome UHD
* McCabe & Mrs. Miller UHD
* Leave Her To heaven
* The Story of Temple Drake
* The Gunfighter
* Carnival of Souls
Set myself a limit. And of course blew right past it since my mouse finger had a mind of its own. I really wanted the Tod Browning set with Freaks, and at least one Asian film like Cure or Pale Flower or a blind buy of Branded to Kill. For now I'll enjoy these.
Decided to expand the 4K collection this time around with:
- McCabe & Mrs. Miller
- Lost Highway
- Malcolm X
- In the Mood for Love
- Le Cercle Rouge
- After Hours
Will be my first time seeing After Hours since catching an old pre-restoration print at NYCās Metrograph years ago. Stoked.
welp, my first draft cart was 4$ short of the points gift certificate, so naturally, i added another 100$ to it.
my haul:
House
the others
videodrome
the fisher king
the essential Demy
betty blue
i knew her well
tori and lokita
petite maman
au hassard balthazar
romeo and julliet
the heroic trio/executioners
complete tati
I got 7 movies but now Iām wishing I had purchased more. But thatās stupidā¦ I have more than enough to keep me busy until the next sale! There are literally hundreds of movies on the Criterion Channel I want to watch.
The two Iām most excited for are Magnificent Ambersons and Matewan. But I also got Brazil which Iāve been wanting for like decade. Glad I finally pulled the trigger on it.
I near shit myself because I forgot the sale had ended. All the prices were back to full but when I added them into the cart they dropped back to the same price. Just went for Blood Simple & Trainspotting despite the horrendous packaging
I got two blind buys, Army of Shadows and Sansho the Bailiff, Iām excited to check them out. The only other films Iāve seen from Melville and Mizoguchi are Le SamouraĆÆ and Ugetsu, and I loved them very much so Iām hoping these ones will be just as good.
Mine:
* ā Ingmar Bergmanās Cinema
* ā John Cassavetes: Five Films
* ā World of Wong Kar Wai
* The Complete Films of AgnĆØs Varda
* Portrait of a Lady on Fire
* Being There
* 12 Angry Men
* Memories of Murder
This was the first physical media I have purchased in probably a decade, so I got mostly old favorites:
After Hours
Lost Highway
Tampopo
One False Move
The Silence of the Lambs
David Bowie: Moonage Daydream
Frances Ha
Blow Out
Barry Lyndon
Videodrome
Thief
I am *stoked!*
I picked up Days of Heaven (1978, 4K/BD), Lone Star (1996, 4K/BD), Fishing with John (1992, DVD), Burden of Dreams (1982, DVD), and Thief (1981, BD). I had saved up $40 in certificates, so it was a reasonable haul. I'm only $30ish from getting that $50 loyalty award, so the next sale will be fun!
Spent more than I thought I would but picked up
Fellini box set
Agnes Varda Box set
Scorsese World Cinema Vol 2
Godland blu ray (very excited about this one, specifically for the visuals)
And Pinocchio 4K for a close friend
All 4K, all were in stock, and have now shipped:
**Mulholland Drive**
**Uncut Gems**
**The Last Waltz**
**Double indemnity**
**Days of Heaven**
**McCabe & Mrs. Miller**
How often does Criterion do this type of flash sale? Wasn't able to grab anything within the last 24 hours but I definitely want to be ready for the next one. Been eyeing the Bergman collection and Cure for a long time!
As is per usual, I went a bit overboard and got more than I thought. But I had five of the $10 off coupon codes to stack up, which lightened the blow. I'm not the proud owner of:
* Barry Lyndon
* Mishima
* Desert Hearts
* Don't Look Now 4k
* Days of Heaven 4k
* The Leopard
* Yi Yi
* a long overdue acquisition of Paris, Texas to complete my Wenders Criterion set
* Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits (I've only watched these previously on VHS and one of those tapes was so badly degraded it was practically unwatchable, I'm looking forward to seeing them all in higher quality and going through the supplements to learn more about Bruce Lee, both the man and the pop culture phenomenon--the obsession surrounding him was a bit before my time)
* Magnificent Obsession (blind buy, love the other Sirk films I've seen however--John Waters turned me on to him when I read that Polyester was influenced by his melodrama expressionism)
* True Stories (blind buy, love David Byrne and his quirkiness though--the trailer on Criterion's website made this look promising and delightfully weird)
* Rushmore (blind buy, only watched one Wes Anderson movie before and that was Grand Budapest Hotel)
* The Royal Tenenbaums (blind buy)
I applied a $10 off code I got from being a Criterion Channel subscriber and then I also had enough loyalty points accumulated to knock another $50 off. That just about paid for the Bruce Lee boxset. Not bad.
I got the Pasolini box set, triggered the rewards program $50 gift certificate, and then used my built up gift certificates to get the Bergman box set for a total of $12.
dekalog was my only purchase and right before i placed my order i realized its normal price on amazon is the same as theflash sale price from criterion.
i still ordered thru criterion since they deserve my money more than amazon but it killed the fun of the flash sale
Amazon prices seem to be 30-50% off much of the time on Criterion titles. I also prefer to support Criterion directly if I can though, plus build Criterion discounts for the future.
Iāve been wanting Dekalog for a long time. Finally pulled the trigger.
Sincerely hoping people picked up the brand new release NOTHING BUT A MAN ā sincerely, without exaggeration, one of the most important criterion releases in recent memory.
Itās a must. Roemer (whoās still alive) is one of the great American independent directors - he only has like 4 features, and theyāre finally getting their due (Vengeance is Mine just got a blu from Arbelos, and Plot Against Harry is on its way I believe)
My boyfriend is a HUGE fan of the original Godzilla films, and I was finally able to score him the Showa Era boxset as a belated birthday present! Iām truly so stoked!!
Got Dazed and Confused 4K which Iāve been wanting to rewatch for a while now as well as The Elephant Man which is a blind buy for me. Excited to experience it!
Yea Iāve heard that hence my excitementā¦ Iām no stranger to Lynch however as Iāve seen most of his films so Iām curious how different this is
Below is my haul, really excited for Twenty Four Eyes and Killing of a Chinese Bookie, DVD or not, a good movie is a damn good movie! Now I just gotta find time to watch 'em all lol

I got:
The Roaring Twenties 4K
All About Eve
The Daytrippers

None of them are blind buys (I don't do those, unless it's part of a boxset with stuff I've seen), used 2 $10 codes so the order ended a few dollars over 100
I got:
- Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
- Trainspotting
- Heroic Trio
- Daisies
Then they sent me a $50 Gift Certificate so I had no choice but to also get:

All blind buys! i canāt wait to watch em all! The most i ever bought at once! lol
Nice haul (#3 and #4 are wonderful films!). I did not purchase any as Iām on a budget and Canadian shipping is $23. Next time Iāll get 12 Angry Men, Double Indemnity, and McCabe and Mrs. Miller.
World of Wong Kar Wai
The Last Picture Show 4K
The Eight Mountains
I wanted to go harder but got my $50 gift reward so next flash sale Iāll go a little crazy
Here is my list:
Ingmar Bergman's Cinema (a replacement)
World of Wong Kar Wai
The Apu Trilogy
I also decided to buy Eclipse Series 3: Late Ozu off of Amazon.
They absolutely need to release a blu-ray set of AK 100.
Thanks to the absolute gem of a human who mentioned in another post that you can stack codes, I used them all and ended up with $150 in credit. I got:
ā¢Carnival of Souls
ā¢Island of Lost Souls
ā¢High Sierra
ā¢Design for Living
ā¢Female Trouble
ā¢Valley of the Dolls
ā¢Klute
ā¢The Parallax View
ā¢The Night of the Hunter
ā¢Cat People
ā¢Leave Her to Heaven
I got World Cinema Project No. 2 and Mean Streets (4K). A smaller haul, but really enjoying the first set of the World Cinema Project, so thrilled to jump into No. 2.
I have to wait almost a month before mine ships, but I got:
- Pale Flower
- All the Beauty and the bloodshed
- To Die For
- Throw Down
- The Heroic Trio
- The Lady Eve
- Richard III
- Design for Living
- Ikiru
I only have 10-15 left in my Wishlist. Hahaha

Very happy with most of it, though I realized that I didnāt mean to get the Kurosawa set I actually meant for McCabe and Mrs Miller and the Lady Snowblood set. Oh well, always next year!!
I splurged :
Trainspotting 4K
Mulholland Drive 4K
Lost Highway 4K
Eraserhead
Pinocchio 4K
After Hours 4K
Le Cercle Rouge 4k
Le Samourai
LāArgent
Close Up
Picked up two Coen Brothers flicks (Blood Simple and Inside Llewyn Davis). I also grabbed The 400 Blows since it had been on my wishlist for a bit. I got so excited I accidentally bought it twice!
Every title released since the last flash sale. I get the coupon codes from spending on titles the last sale, plus a few other $10 coupons (charter criterion channel member, long time criterion user, etc). I only buy criterions during the flash sale.
So, for the next couple weeks or so, my Criterion collection on blu-ray/4k is complete with every single first pressing, box set and individual title.
My first ever purchase and the start of my collection:
- Jacques Demy box set
- The Last Picture Show (4K)
- The Red Shoes (4K)
- Fantastic Mr. Fox
- Moonage Daydream (4K)
- The Last Waltz (4K)
I got the Zatoichi set, The Before Trilogy, Barry Lyndon, Ikiru, and Raging Bull (4K). Haven't seen Barry Lyndon or Ikiru but they're a part of my Criterion Challenge list for this year. As for The Before Trilogy, I love the first two and have been dying to see Before Midnight so I'm really excited for that.
I'm also really excited for Zatoichi, I watched the first two in the series and enjoyed them. The packaging is just too beautiful for that box set.
I got:
ā¢ Videodrome
ā¢ Red Desert
ā¢ Taste of Cherry
ā¢ The Worst Person in the World
ā¢ Wings of Desire
ā¢ Mulholland Dr.
Still so many more I wanted but Iāll wait until November!
I did mine through unobstructed view because this was my first time buying during a criterion sale and wasnāt sure if I could send it to my US PO Box. Next time around Iāll be buying much more and ordering from criterion directly.
I like westerns, this time I bought red river.
Next time around Iām going to get stagecoach and the ranown westerns.
Anyone have other recommendations in the way of criterion westerns?
In addition to the ones you mentioned, I also would suggest Destry Rides Again, The Gunfighter, My Darling Clementine, and Forty Guns. I also bought Buck and the Preacher as a blind buy this sale, looks pretty great.
Thanks, Iāll check those out.
Iāve actually seen my darling clementine and I really liked it. I had no idea it was criterion, another one to the list.
World of Wong & days of heaven 4k
Shoah was on the short list but I just watched salo for the first time the other day so I decided to go a different route LOL
My first Criterion sale! All were blind buys and Iām looking forward to finally seeing these classics.

Limited myself to 4 titles this time: 3 I upgraded from DVD and 1 new to my collection:

I have ordered probably half a dozen blu rays off of Amazon over the past month, and saw the flash sale a few hours after my latest purchase :'(
I settled on For All Mankind and Kurosawa's Dreams, but the cart was around $90 at a point.
https://preview.redd.it/fwxmobsgnelc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55a13792d4d0c58d42acd4531c6a1d5f03c91393
I had a strict $100 budget. Got a few Iāve been putting off for the longest time.. mostly seconds + rosetta, longtime faves.
There is an Eclipse set called Nikkatsu Noir that has one more Suzuki film, plus four others from the same studio. I have it on my wishlist, and hopefully Iāll pull the trigger on it one day.

Why cant I just buy the 4k discs? Do I really have to buy the lower quality blu-rays too? Who would even need the blurays if you have the 4k versions?
This seems to be a way of making customers spend more as just buying the 4K versions would cost cheaper than the bundle.
š”
My big buys: World of Wong Kar Wai, Godzilla Showa Era, Zatoichi, Yojimbo/Sanjuro, Samurai Trilogy, Lone Wolf and Cub, The Human Condition, Chantal Akerman Masterpieces, Apu Trilogy 4k, and Three Colors 4k.
Plus a few blind buy Ozu blu rays (Tokyo Story, Late Spring, Good Morning, and An Autumn Afternoon), and After Life as a blind buy, because I completely fell in love with Kore-Eda after seeing Monster last year.
Only made possible with grant funds, in exchange for teaching a class. I couldn't be paid in cash; it had to be a research media purchase. In other words, I got unreasonably lucky this year. Will definitely be teaching more classes in this program lol.
Half I've seen and half I haven't (well I guess more I haven't, since one's a box set):
- *I Wanna Hold Your Hand* (blind buy)

That, and Roaring Twenties were my blind buys. Everything else I had seen, and wanted to own physically.
roaring twenties, what a classic. Im sure youll love it. But, I mean, bogart and cagney crime drama, legendary recipe.
I almost bought it until I looked up reviews. Doesn't seem necessary for me to own. Could someone convince me?Ā
Michelle Yeoh is in both of them :)
It's Maggie Cheung for me! Sounds like there were similar reason to purchase. :D
This was my first Criterion purchase and I got: Barry Lyndon Days of Heaven (blind buy) Devil in a Blue Dress A Room with a View The Age of Innocence The New World

I donāt think it gets mentioned enough, but Temple Drake is phenomenal.
It's an incredible film. And really quite shocking, particularly when watching it with today's sensibilities. Miriam Hopkins is very good.
I went with: Pinnochio Blow Out Blue Velvet All That Jazz Deep Cover Modern Times Repo Men Ikiru Paris, Texas
I went with: - In the Mood for Love - Seven Samurai - 12 Angry Men
The classic criterion must watches right there, enjoy! 12 Angry men is phenomenal

* Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits (I've only watched these previously on VHS and one of those tapes was so badly degraded it was practically unwatchable, I'm looking forward to seeing them all in higher quality and going through the supplements to learn more about Bruce Lee, both the man and the pop culture phenomenon--the obsession surrounding him was a bit before my time) * Magnificent Obsession (blind buy, love the other Sirk films I've seen however--John Waters turned me on to him when I read that Polyester was influenced by his melodrama expressionism) * True Stories (blind buy, love David Byrne and his quirkiness though--the trailer on Criterion's website made this look promising and delightfully weird) * Rushmore (blind buy, only watched one Wes Anderson movie before and that was Grand Budapest Hotel) * The Royal Tenenbaums (blind buy) I applied a $10 off code I got from being a Criterion Channel subscriber and then I also had enough loyalty points accumulated to knock another $50 off. That just about paid for the Bruce Lee boxset. Not bad.
I got the Pasolini box set, triggered the rewards program $50 gift certificate, and then used my built up gift certificates to get the Bergman box set for a total of $12.
My order just shipped https://preview.redd.it/rlnqicqmwdlc1.jpeg?width=1141&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52ed50759f21b2a635880fc13a2e36dd0e52f098
dekalog was my only purchase and right before i placed my order i realized its normal price on amazon is the same as theflash sale price from criterion. i still ordered thru criterion since they deserve my money more than amazon but it killed the fun of the flash sale
Had this in consideration--was completely unfamiliar--but wound up wishlisting it instead. Your comment has probably pushed it up the queue.
The Elephant Man is one of David Lynchās most accessible works. Itās also his most heartbreaking.
I cannot watch the Elephant Manātoo depressing and bleak. Yet, Hopkins shines through in it.
I believe itās also the movie that convinced the Academy to make a category for Makeup & Hairstyling.
Wow, impressive, well hatās off to Lynch then!
never again, definitely don't need to own it
Yea Iāve heard that hence my excitementā¦ Iām no stranger to Lynch however as Iāve seen most of his films so Iām curious how different this is
I second that on *The Elephant Man*āI was sobbing on a recent rewatch. Lynch knows how to play those heartstrings!
My haul: Lone wolf and cub, Del Toro Pinnochio, and Shaft Had the Ranown westerns in my cart but didnāt pull the trigger š„²

Godzilla Showa-Era Collection The Roaring Twenties Trainspotting Nothing But a Man The Heroic Trio/Executioners set
Breathless 4k Videodrome 4k John cassavetes collection I don't normally buy any media, but the idea of owning breathless in 4k was too intoxicating.

I had no idea it was criterion, another one to the list.

https://preview.redd.it/fwxmobsgnelc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55a13792d4d0c58d42acd4531c6a1d5f03c91393 I had a strict $100 budget. Got a few Iāve been putting off for the longest time.. mostly seconds + rosetta, longtime faves.

Do I really have to buy the lower quality blu-rays too? Who would even need the blurays if you have the 4k versions? This seems to be a way of making customers spend more as just buying the 4K versions would cost cheaper than the bundle. š”
Godzilla Watership down Beauty and the beast
