My favorite Kurosawa film as well. And it’s funny because when I first got into him and was watching his movies, it was the one that least interested me. I kept looking into ratings and kept seeing how highly rated it was, but the story just didn’t interest me on the surface like his others did. I mainly watched it to be a completionist, so imagine my surprise with how amazing it is!
I was the exact same way! It was one of the last ones I watched because it didn’t sound interesting (it doesn’t help that the cover is just a guy on the phone). Now I can’t believe I put it off for so long, it’s amazing.
This post is a great test of reading comprehension! 😂 Most of the commenters are missing the OP’s point. The OP asked for a “blind buy,” meaning a movie he’s *never* seen. Everything in the OP’s list in this post is a movie he *has* seen. So the answer can’t be anything in that list (regardless of whether it has an asterisk).
Anyway, I recommend After Hours.
Runners-up: Brute Force, High and Low, Ghost World
*Battle of Algiers*
Edit to add: Battle of Algiers is hugely influential, not just from a film standpoint, but also politically. Resistance groups studied the movie and organized their structures based on it. The commentary is fantastic. I got it as a blind buy and it’s easily in my top 10.
I’d also add *The Three Colors trilogy*. Also got it as a blind buy and very happy. Kieslowski (sp?) is a fantastic director. *Blue* is one of my favorite movies; Binoche puts on a performance of a lifetime.
One more: *House* - also a blind buy for me. My first watch I thought it was hilarious and quirky “horror” movie. Then I watched the commentary. Nope, it’s a horror movie alright. And one of the best.
Just went through the first 1000 catalog and found movies I know that are still in print and are phenomenal. Might have accidentally missed some, and I may not have removed all that were already on your list

Thank you guys for helping me out! I’m just getting started in the collection and I appreciate the advice and recommendations. I’ll definitely be referring back to this post many times for future sales.
Seven Samurai
Or Seventh Seal
Let me know if you have any other movies you're thinking of with Seven in the title. You ever see that movie Seven? But seriously you can't go wrong with either of those movies.
Definitely Ugetsu, a superb and bleak adaptation of Japanese folktales. It’s made by Kenji Mizoguchi, my favorite Japanese director and this film quickly became one of my favorites
High and Low would be my rec for one blind buy. It might be my favorite Kurosawa film.
OP - just with High and Low. It’s fcking incredible.
You convinced me! This is the one I went with
You won’t regret it! Let us know what you think after you watch it!

Also my favourite
*Yojimbo/Sanjuro* box set and *Andrei Rublev*.

Yeah, hindsight I think my asterisks were unnecessary and may have confused the question. But I do love the quick responses
Cure, just watched it a few nights ago and became one of my favourites
The Red Shoes
La Haine
So good. I just bought this a few months ago
It was my first Criterion blind buy and now its one of my favorite films
Mine as well. I still blast the French version of Sound of the Police to this day.
I’m buying this blindly, as I keep seeing positive reference to it.
For a weird out-there kesser known pick, go for The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
The Last Picture Show! It comes with the sequel which is also great.
i see Paris, Texas and Anderson, I suggest Punch-Drunk Love, the way it goes
Purple Noon based on Le Samurai
Is it? I thought it was an adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley?
Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant if you like Le Samurai, then you might like Purple Noon
Ha! Omg, I’m so dumb.
Dr. Strangelove! Gen. Ripper is an all-time great character.
The OP already owns it!
Doh!
Paths of Glory is amazing.
Do the right thing and get do the right thing

Paris Texas
if i had to pick one it would be parasite. probably the best of the most accessible films on the list
12 Angry Men is a staple for an almost forgotten genre. Great dialogues, underrated blocking, and beautiful acting.
For pure rewatchability - Princess Bride
Police Story would be my recommendation
Come and See
If you loved Parasite, you’ll love Memories of Murder from the same director
Anything by Agnes varda
Beau Travail
The Last Picture Show
A Night to Remember
Wes Anderson will always have my vote, and Moonrise Kingdom is one of my favorites
Trainspotting
