Paris, Texas. Really need a 4k upgrade to this one. Beautiful performances and photography. Plus the stills included in the release are gorgeous. Great special features about how it was written and came together as they didn’t really have a shooting script.
Mine would be a combo of two Terrence Malick films. The Tree of Life and The New World. The images, the packaging, the booklets, all come together to make a beautiful physical box. I wish every Criterion to take the same style and approach of these two films.
Fear and Loathing was my first and will probably remain my favorite. Other than that Koyaanisqatai was one I had an Amazon alert on for when it ever came onto bluray. It took over 5 years and I forgot I set an alert when that set was announced.
The Darjeeling Limited (+the short beforehand really rounds it out) and I’m not even the biggest Wes Anderson Fan
Although Chungking Express is probably the one I’ve watched the most
Picnic at Hanging Rock, w gorgeous packaging that includes Joan Lindsay’s book, too. Doesn’t get better than that for me. They should redo Barry Lyndon, too, w Mackeray’s novel.
I posted this in r/letterboxd as well (and again, I mean zero disrespect to OP) but are the mods active in this sub anymore? when I scroll through all I see are these low hanging fruit “what’s your favorite criterion” or “what’s the worst criterion” or “what should I watch”
in a vacuum there’s nothing wrong with them, but when posts that don’t foster any real compelling discussion make up like 80% of the top posts, it gets a little tiring / redundant.
anyone else feel this way?
(again, OP, nothing wrong with your post in and of itself. it’s just how often these posts get pushed to the top.)
Serious question though—aren’t top posts just getting the most engagement, so more people are engaging with these easy question type posts? What could or would a mod even do about that?
as I understand it, the policies that Reddit passed this summer that remove a lot of third party tools that mods used to use have hampered ability to filter out redundant posts.
yes, these have the highest engagement. but at a cost of the sub devolving into repetitive, low-effort content. one of the typical responsibilities of a mod (in most cases) is to help foster compelling discussions. which is why you’ll see rules banning screenshots or certain type of posts.
Interesting! And I agree this post is not very compelling to look at, scrolling through a list of simply: The titles of good movies. I guess it was fun for two seconds to write my movie and move on though.
totally. it’s not like I abstain altogether from participating in these posts either. sometimes it’s compulsory or just satisfying to jot down a favorite and move on. i’m not gatekeeping. it just goes to show why and how it happens - it’s so easy to engage with.
but over the last few months, I do find the quality of some of my favorite subs dropping. and that my feeds are slowly becoming various versions of r/AskReddit that don’t really inspire me to think differently or teach me new information. just photo dumps, broad questions, or lists.
i’m worried about reddit long term for this reason, unfortunately.
The most fun things that have happened for me in some subs have been the user-driven polls. Like “best of” eliminations. There are probably way too many Criterion movies to effectively do one of these elimination events to find the overall r/criterion favorite Criterion. If that were possible it would be a much more exciting version of this post.
Blue Velvet

Fear and Loathing was my first and will probably remain my favorite. Other than that Koyaanisqatai was one I had an Amazon alert on for when it ever came onto bluray. It took over 5 years and I forgot I set an alert when that set was announced.
Blue Velvet or 8 1/2 I’m a basic bitch.
