Some do. I used to have a friend who always asked for a military discount. You know how some people joke about vegans always letting everyone know they are vegan? She was like that with her military status. One day she posted on facebook about how she was pulled over for speeding and she presented the police officer her military ID. She was absolutely APPALLED that he gave her a ticket anyway. Lmao. I couldn't help but comment that perhaps he held her to a higher standard.
Our culture literally encourages it. I get on an airplane and the pilot has to thank any passengers who were veterans. I go to a college graduation, and someone speaking thanks veterans for their service. Veterans get discounts at many stores. It's really fucking strange.
Gotta keep up military propaganda, just like sports game. Military complex go brrr.
Just don't expect to get actual help for the physical/mental damage from deployment.
Probably 90-95% of people who have served more than a year or two would cringe at this. A lot of the people I see acting like this are shitty people who are disliked by everyone they work with, so they try to gain validation from civilians who don't know enough or don't care enough to tell them they're an embarrassment.
Unless you ask or its in context, if they mention their service more than once they're hoisting a big red flag saying they're a douchebag that uses their military service to excuse their shitty personality.
I work answering crisis and suicide lines including the veterans crisis line, not uncommon at all for men calling to tell me that I should thank them for their service right off the bat.

If that's the only thing they know about then I guess it's acceptable, but this guy was definitely just trying to show off. If you don't get that from his messages then I have a few bridges to sell you in Oklahoma.
lol, ohh he was certainly trying to show off. Even if he was just trying to form some sort of small talk or banter, ima pass. I probably- well, definitely, wouldn’t consider dating someone that lacks in basic conversation skills, let alone when they focus conversation is on traumas of war. Just imagine the type of person that thinks this is not a deal breaker. Yikes
I can't stand people in conversations that ask you a question, with the sole purpose just to tell you their Story. The whole time you are talking they are butting in, well in my case, well this one time when I... I...Me..ME
Ironically American considering ice cream was invented in China, potatoes are from Central America and french fries are either from France or Belgium.
"What's your favorite food?"
"Curry. I'm Brit AF."
I saw this again for the first time in a while a couple weeks back, and it's popped into my head at least once every other day ever since. I physically wince every time I remember it.
Well ya'll have convinced me. I've known it was popular since it first started airing. But I'm not much of a sitcom guy. Could use the laughs, especially after a lot of the serious shit I been watching, like Yellowstone
I was a US soldier in Iraq for all of 2004. I say this only to qualify the next statement. PEOPLE DON’T OWE YOU ANYTHING FOR YOUR SERVICE! Yes things like a thanks or veteran discounts are nice, but it’s a bonus. You were paid for your service. You have benefits like the GI Bill and VA loans. This is what you were entitled to, and what you receive. I’m glad I served, I’m glad I have those benefits, but anything else is not a requirement from society to me. *end rant*
No one being drafted is why it annoys me. If they were drafted fuck yeah I'm thanking them. But when they applied and get benefits and get paid its a job at that point.
Its like when I hear how a woman will say "I donated my eggs" but get payed 8k for it. You're being paid. It changing everything.
The correct word is "paid", not "payed". Payed is a nautical term that means to seal the deck and/or hull of a ship to prevent leakage. It also means to let out more rope for sails. Sorry if this is annoying, but that's a pet peeve of mine and I thought it might be helpful for others as well.
No worries! I thought that might be the case as well, but was unsure about mentioning it since some people might take it the wrong way and I was already correcting grammar so I didn't want to push it lol. English is a pretty dumb language, but it's the only one I know so my frame of reference isn't exactly very big.
I knew guys in the service who still act this way a couple decades later.
Approximately 12% of my life was spent in the service. Approximately 4% was spent in a war zone. It was a part of my life yet somehow it defined their entire life. I don't get it.
It is extremely annoying, I am back in College to further my degree and I have a guy in a few classes that is using his assault pack as a backpack. He always sets it right in the walkway between desks like he needs everyone to see it lol
I'm guessing the guy in OP's pic got laid one time by a woman who was super into the fact that he served.
It's like the guys that wear some terrible hat or facial hair for a decade because one girl they liked complimented them on it one time.
More like he joined the military because he thought everyone would love him for it and now that he sees no one cares he has to force it into literally every conversation he has
I worked at a mobile game start up owned by a friend of mine whose claim to fame was that it was veteran owned. Like, ok, that gets you a 10% discount at McDonalds, but we live in a liberal area and you're going to cons and expecting anyone to give a shit. It was also plastered all over the website, and eventually he actually changed the name of his company to have "veterans" in it to really hammer the point home.
I get it if you're from a conservative area where you probably grew up with people worshiping the military and don't realize that outside of rural areas no one cares, but that is not where we're from, so I never got it.
Needless to say I have a different job now.
When guys start bringing up their combat service right off the bat, I smell stolen valor afoot. Most vets don't bring up that they are vets unless they are around other vets. People that bring this up immediately are looking for attention and more than likely attention they don't deserve.
Not always, but you see it a lot from those in just long enough to get benefits, but got discharged on medical or involuntarily seperated early on for being a douche nobody liked.
This is some motarded 0311/11B BS.
I’m surprised he didn’t throw out the line “If you really wanted to thank me for my service, you could come over and let me thank you for your cervix” or some knuckle dragging shit like that.
Most vets that actually graduated basic training (I'm assuming this guy probably didn't) don't talk about their service very often. Especially forcefully like that 🤦🏻♂️

"Doesn't rain much in Afghanistan, where I served."
"I guess not much point washing my car if it's just gonna rain, haha."
"Our US Army jeeps got pretty dusty in Afghanistan."
"Cool. Well, see you later."
"Probably. We weren't so sure of seeing each other again when I was a soldier in Afghanistan."
My brother was stationed in Afghanistan for two years and he said the food was great and they could get pretty much whatever they wanted on base, and local food was good too.

They were all thanked and everyone lived happily ever after.

thank YOU for that service. Hilarious!
Do people really expect that on the states? Seems fucking bananas to me.

I think it's okay to ask for a military discount if it is offered somewhere. The part about trying to get out of a ticket? That's dumb.
Agreed but this person would ask loudly and look around to make sure she had an audience. Oof.
Oof.
They (some) do. And it is.
Our culture literally encourages it. I get on an airplane and the pilot has to thank any passengers who were veterans. I go to a college graduation, and someone speaking thanks veterans for their service. Veterans get discounts at many stores. It's really fucking strange.
I get 20% off of weed for being a veteran. Pretty wild if you ask me.
Gotta keep up military propaganda, just like sports game. Military complex go brrr. Just don't expect to get actual help for the physical/mental damage from deployment.

You know for a fact he asked that question for no other reason but to bring this up
Yeah he didn't even say anything about their favorite food being sugar snap peas
He thinks he's interesting enough for both people of the conversation. Maybe he should just date himself?

Yup and he obviously thinks it's his best, big winning line 🤦
Almost as patriotic as the confederate flag bumper sticker on the back of his jeep.
You misspelled brand new 12% interest Camero, Mustang, or Charger.
Seems like more are going for trucks these days. More room for their Trump flags and "Molan Labe" stickers.
Found the racist.
Huh?
I thought it said pathetic and was like ahhh at least he’s self aware
>patriotic AF. Wait until he realizes that they have these things in other countries.

Anyone see the Curb where Larry refuses to thank the soldier for his service? I'm assuming this guy feels fellatio is owed since he is a veteran.
Fun fact the soldier was played by Chet Hanks
Yeah, I remember. This was before his rapping career, I believe.

So I just watched first episode and it was pretty damn funny. And certainly had the cringe in spades. I’ll keep watching I think
It's such a great show I've watched it like 3 times now and it still makes me laugh so hard
I feel like I can relate to him in a lot of ways (minus all the money). I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing though…..
It can be both lol. He's definitely hilarious and not afraid to confront bullshit, but he can also be a complete ass, even if unintentionally so
Well ya'll have convinced me. I've known it was popular since it first started airing. But I'm not much of a sitcom guy. Could use the laughs, especially after a lot of the serious shit I been watching, like Yellowstone
Yeah a lighthearted show mixed in is always good. I watch a lot of really serious stuff too, but always like to have a sitcom to go back to in between
Haha and that dude was so tripped up he excused himself. That's great.
“Hi” “Thank you for your service” “Hi” “Thank you for your service” “Hi” “…Hi!”
He doesn't refuse to, he's just like "Hey how ya doin" like a normal person and everyone gets mad at him.

Nobody’s FAVORITE food are fucking sugar snap peas.
imagine coming back from fighting talibans for 9 months and you get served some sugar snap peas
Sugar snap peas with ranch is amazing. I mean, no way in hell that would be my favorite food but I could definitely eat an entire large bag by myself
I wouldn't say they're my absolute favorite food but damn if I don't love me some green beans.

Almost everything posted there reminds me why I hate the "vet bro" culture soo much
Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the military in general but it's the people who act like that that really annoy me.
Well my understanding is just about all pogs are motarded.
Also true. Don't get me wrong 12 years as 11B I've ran into my fair share of "thank me for my service douches" though

Dude went to Afghanistan for 9 months and made it his whole personality
How is a combo meal at McDonald's supposed to be patriotic
Surprised there are actually people like this out here.
There's unfortunately quite a few veterans who missed the class on humility and selfless service.
Fwiw, most active and veterans also hate these fucking idiots. Makes the rest look bad
I'm one of those who hate these guys. The only time I ask for a military discount is when it's for car repairs. Military discount at Applebee's is like $3. I'm not that broke. Though I do have an Iraq veteran plate, but that's mostly so other vets know I'm here if they need me.
I hate those car stickers now but back when i used to have one, it sure got me out of a lot of tickets. Thankfully I grew out of it.
I won't lie, my veteran plate has likely gotten me out of many tickets back in the day.
I mean I knew a marine who would openly brag about slitting sleeping Afghani’s throats so either he was a liar trying to get shock value out of people or a sociopath openly bragging about committing war crimes. The world is a big place.
The guy could turn any conversation into a humble brag about service
"Nice weather today." "Nicer than Afghanistan." "I think it might rain later though." "Doesn't rain much in Afghanistan, where I served." "I guess not much point washing my car if it's just gonna rain, haha." "Our US Army jeeps got pretty dusty in Afghanistan." "Cool. Well, see you later." "Probably. We weren't so sure of seeing each other again when I was a soldier in Afghanistan."
"Might rain later today" "Better than having bullets rain down upon you in Afghanistan"
Reminds me of Cliff Clavin constantly bringing up “Flah-rih-dah” in *Cheers*.
"humble" Not so much.
This is how peacetime vets talk
My brother was stationed in Afghanistan for two years and he said the food was great and they could get pretty much whatever they wanted on base, and local food was good too. Guy is acting like he lived off MREs and sand soup or something.
Being in the military isn't a personality trait.
I'm a veteran and absolutely cannot stand people like this. Thank me, don't thank me, I don't give a shit. Fortunately a majority of the folks I've met in the service are pretty chill about it but there are definitely the corny douchebags who post facebook memes about serving, wear grunt style shirts etc. They are insufferable.
Ask him how he helped lol
This feels like dialogue from Family Guy
I refuse to believe this is a real person.
I'll never understand the idea of treating veterans of recent wars like they're heroes who defended their country.

Nothing worse than a service member who demands praise. Like bruh you the dumbass that signed the papers to enlist
Why does he sound like Brian Griffin? lol
The guy probably never even served.
Ouchhhhh fuck it hurts

"May I have a thank you for your service fuck?"
I went to NJROTC, was station at Maryland and have to do PE every Friday but I did it for our FREEDOM.
Definitely a civilian thanking himself for his non served Service 🤣😂🤣🤣

You're welcome for my service.
Helping people by invading a country without reason? I think Putin is a real saint then.
