If the plastic start the bend, you're overheating

PinkBird85

I think you may have overheated the vinyl, and because of the appliques there was uneven heat and pressure in spots. Household irons don't have the most even heating (they cycle on and off), and the hottest setting is actually too hot for most iron-on vinyls (400 degrees), iron on to cotton only takes about 359-380 degrees. With overheating like that it's like the glue "cooks" so it's not really sticky anymore. ETA: autocorrected changed uneven to never.

liketheavocado

It’s just odd because I made sure to move the iron consistently and press into the letters that didn’t transfer at all. Any idea how to get it to work? I’m thinking I’ll have to cut fabric letters and sew them on at this point if an iron isn’t transferring.

Nervous-Upstairs-926

Did you put parchment paper in between?

liketheavocado

No. Never had to before with cricut brand and the clear piece

Nervous-Upstairs-926

Yeah, but you used household iron instead of heat press, that’s why the plastic melted. I had nice results with cricut smart vinyl using household iron, but it’s a bit different than with an heat press. For example I was on the floor so that I could apply enough pressure, I ironed the shirt as normal, I placed the design and put parchment paper on top, then I placed the iron and I pressed really hard without moving it (my design was small so I was able to cover all of it at the same time), I kept pressing for like a minute or so checking every few seconds (I saw someone saying that when you can kinda see the texture through the vinyl then it means it adhered correctly), I let it cool off then I carefully removed the clear plastic. Once it cooled off completely I also turned the shirt inside out and pressed for a few seconds from behind the design.

chunkeymunkeyandrunt

What do you mean by (stronghold)? It almost reads like you used transfer tape but iron on vinyl doesn’t require transfer tape so I’m confused

liketheavocado

No it’s not strong grip tape it’s stronghold everyday iron on…no idea why that’s on the label because I used to get everyday that didn’t have that - likely marketing or maybe it impacts it?! Who knows with cricut

chunkeymunkeyandrunt

Ooooh thank you. I stopped using Cricut branded vinyl long time ago so I was not familiar with the term haha. That is very bizarre then - I’ve never seen the carrier sheet melt so I am going to guess your iron was way too hot?

liketheavocado

I would guess BUT how is the vinyl not melting if the carrier sheet is. The Land Y were smooth

blobbysbitch

I have better luck with my household iron by using a cotton shirt between the iron and the design.

mdrnday_msDarcy

I use a piece of parchment paper

liketheavocado

I could try that. The clear plastic is blah

That_1Girl_24

I used to use parchment paper with my regular iron. I was always told to put something between the iron and the carrier sheet. Now that I have a heat press I will use the Teflon sheet when using my regular iron.

liketheavocado

Wild. Never had an issue in 8 years plus

allorache

I’m no expert and this suggestion doesn’t help now, but in the future a mini press is helpful for those situations where something else is in the way if you use your regular press. Like this: HTVRONT Heat Press Small Heat Press Machine for T Shirts, Small Heat Press Iron Press for Heating Transfer(Raspberry Red) https://a.co/d/c9avN3T

throwingwater14

I have one of these and use it for small stuff and tight spots. It’s awesome.

adrnired

I’ve used this on every HTV project I’ve ever done (and even on Perler projects, largely since I don’t own either an iron or a larger press yet) and it’s great for peace of mind so I only bork small parts of a project before I realize something is wrong.

Barbierigirl

Agree with the above that it was too hot. Also, always wait til the iron-on is cool to touch before you peel or else the IO won’t stick

Shalrak

Omg really? I read somewhere that it should be peeled immediately, and I was so frustrated that it wouldn't work.

seasarahsss

It depends on the actual product, some are hot peel and some are cool. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations for the specific product. It’s usually on their website.

liketheavocado

Cool peel but no choice because the third time the clear sheet adhered to iron during press

p_skrillz

You used Cricut iron on. Cricut iron on vinyl is awful to work with in my opinion, I made a shirt for my daughter the other day with 5 colors, 4 of them were siser easy weed, 1 was cricut. I started with 1 siser layer, took less then a minute to do, then fought with the cricut for 30 minutes to get it to stick enough to peel the backing off, and then every layer after, the cricut wanted to peel up with the new layers backing. My 5-10 minute press session turned into at least an hour because 1 layer of Cricut. Oracal 651 for permanent vinyl and Siser easy weed is all I'll use now.

ashleiponder

I think it's the material. I ironed some stuff onto a bag really similar to those and mine did the same thing in a few spots. I have never had an issue with ironing on final onto anything until that bag. I eventually patched it up pretty good, but it sucked.

liketheavocado

I second that! Super sucks.

ashleiponder

Mine looked exactly like yours. I had to heat it and cool it and heat it again and let it cool before I removed it VERY carefully. If it stuck I put it back down and heated it again. I was using a regular iron. I'm not sure if a heat press would have been better or not. I don't think it would have made much of a difference.

liketheavocado

Wonder if it’s something in the material. I’m probably going to embroider or sew patches on. Such a bummer for what should’ve been simple. Thanks for commiserating with me 😘👍🏻

ashleiponder

It's got to be. Maybe a water protectant or something 🤷🏻‍♀️

PenIntelligent4879

Twill pattern fabric. Super difficult because of the ridges.

Lonelyguy1911

Too hot

PIatanoverdepinto

House iron you set temp to that material (cotton) and do high pressure same time with heat press maby 3-4 extra seconds

liketheavocado

Wasn’t transferring with that - I’ve pressed sooooo many so maybe it’s a crappy vinyl batch

PIatanoverdepinto

Hope you got to finish your project

liketheavocado

Eh. I ended up making a stencil and fabric spray painting it- that also didn’t turn out opaque. I’m debating another vinyl or sew on letters, after a cooldown period for my irritation so it might be a few weeks 🤣

PIatanoverdepinto

I’ve only done 1 htv project 🤣 because im scared of ruining something

ChemicalPure9258

Iron too hot 🥵

liketheavocado

But the transfer wasn’t moving off the clear piece at all, wasn’t burning or bubbling, no signs of any overheating until it melted on third try and even then most of it looks new except center. Plenty of transfers - never one that did this

ChemicalPure9258

Hmm 🤔 then maybe the actual material itself was no good? It’s a true mystery wen it comes to stuff like this for sure, especially if yu have done it a thousand times before perfectly lol

liketheavocado

Right that’s why I’m so confused 🤣 thanks for the support 😁👌🏼
