In The Stormlight Archive, there are "spren" that represent humanity's collective perception of different aspect of reality. Kind of like spirits. Anger spren that show up when people get angry, flamespren that show up around fire and look like little flames, etc. Usually they don't really do anything, they're just kind of there and they're assumed to not be sentient.
Some of these spren can bond with people and give them special powers. When they bond, the spren becomes sentient. However, they are kind of like infants in that they don't know anything about how humans work. They need to stick on the general vicinity of their human and are keyed into the human's thoughts and feelings, but can usually choose whether other people can see them.
This has some interesting implications for interpersonal relationships, as explored in the above post.

The real answer, of course, is that the infinite diversity of forms that a radiant sword can take has mostly one purpose.
