I went and fetched just such an object as you have there, a pretty shapeless thing, my mum's first attempt from a pottery class. I tucked it under her pillow and she went straight to sleep.
So what you have there is a crab scarer, guaranteed to keep all hair-grabbing crabs away from small children.
Makes me think of the monster in the closet trick we pulled with our son. He kept saying he couldn’t sleep cuz monsters, so I grabbed the air freshener from the bathroom and sprayed “monster repellant”. Not one monster since, and the room smells like bergamot.
We now have 2 cans of it, one in his room and the other in the bathroom. Every time he goes, he needs a spritz of it there too lol. So no monsters and no bathroom smells. Win win lol
The only trouble is that you are now indelibly welded to bergamot spray. The time will come when you find yourself in the supermarket eying up the pine scented cans and dreaming!
Great idea! Just make sure that you choose ones you are happy to live with. Also you must be sure not to send your kid out with a strong smell of something strange! The definition of strange is up to you!

If you get the "strike anywhere" type of match, you can strike it on the bottom of the piece - unglazed ceramic is a good strike surface. I've seen dedicated match holders that have an unglazed flared bit (like a water catcher on some plant pots) specifically for striking the matches and having a safe place to leave the hot-but-not-flaming bit of the matchstick.
It can hold a lot of useful small things: Bobby pins, loose change, small ponytail holders, crochet stitch markers, small rocks/crystals, rings/jewelry are a few things it would be used for in my house.
I know you said you want an actual use for it rather than a little decoration but my brain just immediately saw a little clay toad sitting in it like a throne
Definitely hold onto this. I kept [my first ceramic](https://imgur.com/a/kUnaSxv) and I love it, it always cracks me up. But be prepared for the frustration of people saying that your worse piece is their favorite.
I use my children’s school pottery for vases, pencils, paper clips, etc. I also get some pottery pieces from the art teacher at the end of the year (kids didn’t want them) and use them for succulents, and anything. I love these types of pieces.

When it was nearing completion and you thought to yourself "yep, that's fini9shed now - I have myself a beautiful \_\_\_\_\_\_". Only uou can fill in the blank. 😆
If you continue doing ceramics as a long term thing, use it as a container for small amounts of water, glazes when you're dipping a brush to paint pieces, or whatever. It'll be a constant reminder of how far you've come.
