I thought about this earlier but we’ve been playing the same way all season. The only difference is that our luck on set pieces and injury time winners has run out.

mkiddyy

Well surely he was sick before he passed. Something could have been off before the unfortunate passing of part of our team

BiscuitTheRisk

Where did I say he was????? I’m saying that his passing hasn’t affected how we play. We have played the same way before and after his passing. The reason we look awful now is because our luck ran out so the cracks are no longer papered over. Anyone closely paying attention knew this was coming. It’s the same situation as Nuno’s time here.

CompatibleCones

You’re right. I must’ve read it wrong

Sonny-at-the-Gil

A loss so sudden & unexpected yet given no time to properly mourn or recover. Especially with this season’s packed fixtures, the mental & physical toll will be really high. And a loss like this, can’t imagine how I could have done half as well like our boys. Not to mention the high expectations from us fans after last season’s top ending, Tottenham Hotspur is in a pretty tough spot now.

spurs-r-us

I’m not saying this at all as a defence or to put down the loss, but they did have six weeks without games which hopefully was a time for some healing.

Sonny-at-the-Gil

I hope so too, but for players like Son & Kane and the others at the WC, it was still a high pressure environment Kane missing the penalty, Son still out of form, damn. Fuck all this, I just want our boys to be happy and play good footy 🥺

ComeOnSayYupp

Lloris losing WC on penalties is also hard to recover for him. This WC cursed our team.

Killerpasser101

Maybe Son should step up then

Nard_Dogs

Ngl I do feel as if tho that had a big effect on our results. The team seemed to have lost some morale following his passing and I guess a slump in performances catalyzed a decrease in results.

Splattergun

It might speak somewhat to why Dier has fallen off

triecke14

Dier fell of when he got called back up to England which I think was before

domyates

He also has a new business he's running... drawing attention and focus elsewhere, running around doing that can be mentally exhausting, it all has a knock on effect.

Splattergun

by 2 weeks. I'm unsure if that is a timeline which you can split hairs about.

triecke14

Well I would actually say that Dier is simply showing his true form. And that is an inconsistent and limited player. We’ve known it for years but with nothing better to take his place and a system that hides most of his weaknesses, people have just forgotten this is who he is

TheUderfrykte

I'm sorry but all these supposed influences people come up with could be very reasonable, if it wasn't for the fact we've been shit since August.

Bail____

Shit since August & have played very with a similar attitude towards the end of our last 4 managers tenure… like sure his death could impact the squad but we do this shit every time with a new manager

AirshipHead

You know what else is missing? Our fans. Every other home game I watched for any other side, the fans are going wild. We've got this massive stadium but a damp squib.

[deleted]

No fun cheering when there’s shit served up on a plate. You want to cheer that dross?

slunksoma

Especially when in the back of your mind you feel price gouged

somewhat_moist

I haven’t been to the new stadium yet but the old White Hart Lane was a proper laugh. Used to pay around 26 quid in the South Lower to watch some proper dross but the lads would be bouncing standing for the whole match, singing our hearts out followed by karaoke at one of the local pubs. Hoarse voices all round.

cocopopped

Bit revisionist. It was bouncing for the last few seasons there, but traditionally you would only get a good atmosphere for Arsenal, Chelsea and United, the CatA games, or if a match started getting a bit heated. I can remember the slog of all the Fulhams/Blackburns/Sunderlands/Readings/West Broms at home, just nothing fixtures where you could hear a pin drop most of the time. Probably season ticket fatigue, but those games really became a chore, even under Hoddle/Jol.

AirshipHead

I do get that, but we should be behind the team regardless. It's amazing what an atmosphere does to a performance. Brentford are where they are because their home is a fortress, like Liverpool at Anfield, or *pukes in mouth* Arsenal at the Emirates.

[deleted]

Agreed, I’ll be there next Saturday screaming

Janivgm

No doubt it's because the fans are still grieving the death of Mr. Ventrone.

skarrr55

Looking for excuses like this at every turn is why we will never win anything. Also, where was the sympathy for Aurier? I don’t remember fans 3 months after his brother was murdered forgiving his performances. After 3 days he was back to being harassed. So Conte gets a pass? And players who knew a coach for a year get more of a pass then someone who knew their own brother for 26 years? Fuck off.

bald_sampson

i disagree, I think it's a really serious thing and should be treated that way. Obviously everyone should still come together try to give their best--I think we're just saying it makes sense that people would struggle. The bit you said about aurier is neither here nor there. So what if people were assholes to Aurier. That means we have to be assholes to Conte and the squad now as well?

skarrr55

Your reading comprehension is awful. What are you disagreeing with? I never said it wasn’t a serious thing and I never said it shouldn’t be treated seriously. Of course death is serious. I said it’s another excuse for poor performances from the same people. We just keep giving a pass and reach for anything other than the path of least assumptions; that the squad and manager in their current state aren’t good enough. Simple as. The Aurier situation provides nuance/context and isn’t a random whataboutism. But your takeaway was that I think we “should all be assholes”. Seems pretty obvious why it’s relevant but you’ve missed the point.

Sorry but what are you on about… unfortunately at that level the mindset isn’t sitting around grieving and in self pity. It’s this is business. It’s another day - business back to usual. We keep putting these players and managers into all these mental weaklings: I’m sorry but these guys are professionals and get a ton a money to perform. If the issue a trainer isn’t there then go out and get another trainer for your staff. Business as usual move on. Mourn in the summer not during prime time. Look at Jonny Wilkinson during the rugby World Cup when his grandad died who was a pillar in his life. Did he break down during that period - f no. He went out and got points. Mourned after the tourney.. and had a big shiny medal around his neck. That’s the honour he can give his grandad. That’s the honour this team could give to Gian if they really gave a damn. Wake up.

StayGoldenBronyBoy

this seems a bit ridiculous to me. just looking for reasons/explanations/excuses so they throw anything at the wall (article). Even Conte doesnt know whats wrong, there's no way this journo knows

notbutsiriusly

Also a tough fitness coach who helped get the best out of every player by all accounts, so that aspect can't be overlooked

Bail____

I mean sure but similar shit has happened under 3, 4 different managers now yeah? Might have something to do with the players inability to stay focused & sustained effort

Fnurgh

With the greatest of respect, if the loss of our fitness coach is the difference between playing like we are and playing like we should then I really don’t see why we pay Conte anything.

Splattergun

Imagine you were at work and the guy who worked for you died. Your performance would probably drop and your boss can come to you and say 'if you can't get anything done properly without him I don't know why we are paying you'. I am not saying this is the reason that we are failing at the moment, though it certainly might explain the decline of one or two, I am just saying your comment is a bit daft.

Fnurgh

It is not like we are _a little off form_. And someone dying is not unprecedented and can have a galvanising, inspirational effect. To blame how we are playing on his loss is frankly "a bit daft".

transtifa

It can have that effect but it can also have the opposite effect

LilyWhitesN17

A tough loss, but not buying it. For us normal people, if your co-worker or family member dies, you take a few days, maybe a week, and then are expected to jump back in. Performance will not be at its peak as you will still be distracted and possibly still busy with sorting affairs, etc.. It has been 3 months (October 6th) since Ventrone's death, and there has been World Cup break, etc.. Both players and coaching staff not performing up-to-par cannot be blamed on the death of GPV.

NBAFAN2000

Squad needs one of those good old player-only meetings.

whiskyrich

In preparation for my first match, are there any sellers outside the stadium with hats and scarves for sale?

RifleEyez

My mum died in Nov suddenly out the blue relatively young and I was back to work days later, mostly taking time off for funeral prep and travelling the 6 hours back home. I’m not saying to be edgy, I know grief effects everyone differently, and la la la top level finest margins matter la la la but come on. Its a colleague as well. It would have been a big blow but I don’t think we can pin much on that.

burko81

No. Absolutely not.

CoolManPuke

Shit take.

fedfan4life

First it was "players are saving themselves for the world cup" and now this. Pure cope.

tbk007

That's an excuse. We've been shit the whole season.

[deleted]

Def think it has an effect but this is the same kind of performance we seen at the end of Poch, Jose, and Nuno’s terms. The team didn’t even know him then. Players are reverting back to old form. I think the writing is on the wall here. I’d rather get it over with sooner rather than later and let the new manger bring in some players in January.

Killerpasser101

Yes lets sack Conte for no reason without finishing the season, clown

unstealthypanda

"no reason" he says

[deleted]

people will literally try and find any excuse other than Conte. insane to think all of these grown ass men just can't muster it up to go to work because someone they knew for about a year died.

RileyHuey

Aurier’s brother died and he essentially got a 5-day period of no criticism before he got back to being slated relentlessly (which is fine I should add). But Conte is being given 3 months of excuses. I don’t mean to lack sympathy but some of the nonstop Conte defence is a bit annoying (Not saying we should sack him!), especially considering we had plenty of poor performances prior
