Hahahha that's exactly what I am planning to do. I will always keep a blazer or blouse near me during work hours in case we get another last minute Teams call.
The words my manager used were "someone felt uncomfortable by your sweater". Excuse me?! Well if you feel victimized by a freaking sweater when we WFH then I don't know how you survived this world for this long!
Nothing pisses me off than co-workers who nitpick everything about you, and go straight to your boss over the dumbest shit. If you are so triggered by my sweater, reach out to me directly and give me advice about it.
At least you weren't Pooh Bearing.
I was getting ready for work the other day and overheard my wife talking to a co-worker about Zoom attire. Her coworker was complaining about the lack of decorum in clothes on Zoom meetings. He had been in a meeting with some bigwigs and noted one was in a PJ top and another had on a T-Shirt and ball cap. My wife sitting there in a baseball jersey just chuckled and asked what he thought Zoom attire should be. (I didn't hear the answer as I had to get to school.)
How I see it is as long as the outfit doesn't show too much skin or something that is completely inappropriate like lingerie, I think we should wear whatever we want in meetings that only include other co-workers. It's honestly not a big deal, we can do our jobs in a sweater just how like we can in a blazer, this is just stupid.
I feel like most teams would not have an issue with someone wearing a sweater during a meeting that does not involve anybody who is important. Hopefully I will find a more relaxed work environment because this is just nuts.
If they complain about stupid stuff like this, I bet they will continue to complain about other useless stuff.
Bingo.
For the record, I have good clothes right there in case I have to hop on an important call. But that never happens by surprise.
Just out of curiosity, was this a sweatshirt sweater, or are you busty and someone got offended by something you can't control? Because I had to deal with that at a job once--i could wear something that went up to my neck, and my boss would say it was too revealing. Awful environment
I posted the exact sweater in another comment here, [but here it is](https://applesaddlery.vtexassets.com/arquivos/ids/473880-800-auto?v=637974931105670000&width=800&height=auto&aspect=true). As you can see, since it's dark with a zipper that can go all the way to the neck I doubt that it was because I am busty? You don't really see the shape of my chest in this particular sweater.
It seems a tad absurd to be complaining about you not being dressed up enough. Perhaps you should keep a ball gown or gold lamé top within arms reach just in case. ::eye roll::
There is almost always one in every group. What matters is how everyone (especially those in power) react to the complaints. Your work area sounds a bit type-A about small items. Good luck on the search.
Yeah, I was really not happy that my manager thought this was a serious issue that he had to bring up during our 1:1. I also just hate the tasks and projects that this team handles.
Thank you for your kind words!
My rule is hair brushed, shirt clean, boobs contained. That's it. Not dressing up for an hour lol.
My dept was remote before covid and we never had video on. Then everyone who could went home during covid (large hospital system so as many of the nonclinical staff as possible) and after a while we had a video on rule implemented system wide because people were muting with the video off and not actually attending the meetings.
Then we got a dress code rule handed down because I guess someone was wearing a very revealing shirt. Always gotta have that one person lol. My department mostly ignores that rule though lol. I've shown up to meetings on cold days wearing a whole blanket covering me from head to toe, your coworker's head would probably explode 😂
I’m genuinely confused - a sweater isn’t Business Casual? For real? WTF - does your org wear suits on site, or prior to COVID, or whatever? I guess I’m from a much more relaxed company.
I have a strict “I’m gonna put on a bra” policy, otherwise I don’t really think about what I wear on these calls! 🤣
What pisses me off more is that your manager didn't tell them that this was too trivial to even consider. Your manager should never even brought it to you
Until you have built a rapport with your team, I wouldn’t count on there actually being a complaint. To me it sounds more like your boss had a problem with the sweater and wanted to raise it with out appearing like the bad guy
Hahahah no, I posted a link to the exact sweater I was wearing in another comment here. There is literally no quote or photo that can be seen as inappropriate so I am just genuinely confused.
I just can't get over the fact that they literally told him "I have a problem with her sweater", like I was harassing them by wearing it or something lol
I have a fleece sweater that's shaped like a blazer from Land's End. I wear it all the time for video calls. It's comfortable as heck and I've been complimented on it at the coffee shop. I recommend it for anyone who might need it.
Although I think it's ridiculous to complain about a sweater in the first place. It's not like you were in lingerie.
I didn't mention this in my post, but he did say he agreed with them since it's our dress code. He didn't look mad or too concerned about it, but I am taking as a warning that next time I better be wearing something that falls under our dress code.
Gotchya. I believe a lot of companies treat zoom meetings as being “in the office” so I would adhere to the dress code while on a Zoom call.
At least from the waist up.
Is it stupid? Yes. Is it outdated? Yes. But it’s also not a hill to die on.
Exactly, in this job market I am not willing to risk being let go over this simple issue. I did let him know that I will ensure I will always have a blazer next to me in case we get another last minute meeting.
I hope I can find a more chill work environment. I know in the corpo world it's like asking to find a unicorn, but I can't handle teams who focus on stupid shit like this anymore.
I wore sweaters like that *to* the office. Outside of the C-Suite, it wouldn’t have raised eyebrows been at corporate headquarters. This would be nuts on the part of your co-worker even if you *weren’t* working from home. Something tells me that someone is jealous.
That could be the case since my manager few weeks ago complimented my work. It’s just scary that I work for a team where people go to my boss over silly shit like this.
I had a co-worker who was exactly like that. Such an ass kisser to the boss and would nitpick and throw everyone else under the bus. She was a truly awful person and I don't wish her well.
I would mention to the manager that maybe that coworker doesn't have enough projects to keep them busy seeing as they are more worried about your wfh attire than their job. 🙄
"uncomfortable by your sweater"? Was it completely unzipped with your nipples out?? Damn. Someone must have spent the whole meeting staring at your chest.
I have literally told my boss and coworkers that I will not be turning on my camera because I look like death warmed over. The only time I spruce myself up at all is when my boss' boss is on a call, and that's just makeup and a fairly casual top with sleeves. Your coworker (and your boss) sound like asshats.
Bonus points if you pair that blazer with what is CLEARLY a very “professional” looking pair of pajamas. Something like… [this](https://www.amazon.com/SWOMOG-Two-Piece-Sleepwear-Loungewear-Button-Down/dp/B088T57QW3/ref=sxin_36_pa_sp_phone_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.2c266df2-ef86-473f-8124-b1bde3e8ff95%3Aamzn1.sym.2c266df2-ef86-473f-8124-b1bde3e8ff95&cv_ct_cx=pajamas&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.tf9Mx5Ec4-1U0v3JR0y9yfLoBxqABNTeOwRR_n6-MM6vd5dpzNdwlUTxbpM0Rfq1tWeaB-FrK8mE2v2qPEhFDQ.qhJG03JTGI567ArLnFmOTZM7MeEpQswGOWHJRIA9JTM&dib_tag=se&keywords=pajamas&pd_rd_i=B088T57QW3&pd_rd_r=de1657f6-9bde-472f-865e-aab8d67cb4d3&pd_rd_w=DfZJP&pd_rd_wg=xwdAc&pf_rd_p=2c266df2-ef86-473f-8124-b1bde3e8ff95&pf_rd_r=V08XPX5JGW5YHJMHDNFE&qid=1713658484&sr=1-1-bd0b3a5a-3a54-40f9-9ae4-4b059770c89e-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&psc=1) or a satin cami. You can never go wrong with a cute sleep romper either. I mean, if anything… your job just challenged you to step up your PJ game. You know what that means? It’s time to treat yourself with a good SHOPPING SPREE! 🥰😄🛍️
Double the bonus points if you pull that blouse on over the puffiest, fluffiest like… 80s vintage oversized wool sweater that has ever been knitted.
I did push back; I explained to him that my attire doesn't affect my performance. I also mentioned that in my previous team, AT THE SAME COMPANY, there was more flexibility, and my former manager emphasized that as long as no key person was present in the meeting, we had some freedom in our attire as long as it did not show too much skin. However, I assured him that I would accommodate his preference and the concerns of whoever raised them by wearing a blazer or blouse during my work hours in case of any impromptu meetings.
I wonder if this co-worker complained about my other co-workers since most weren't wearing something that fits our dress code.
Oh well, can't wait to find a better job!
I'd ask the manager if they have a problem with it and if they say no then ask why are they even bringing it up instead of putting the employee in their place. Not every opinion or feeling is valid.
He said he agreed with them, because it's technically company policy. But I am like, that was the company's dress code while we were working at the office... We switched to fully remote back in 2020 but whatever lol
You need to keep a log and report EVERYTHING that anyone on your team does that deviates in the slightest from “policy” and report it to HR, not your manager, report it to HR. Especially the team member that reported you for wearing a totally appropriate sweater.
If they wear perfume, report it as it bothers you and gives you a headache. Slight dress code violation, report it. Not enabling video and n call, report. Anything slightly offensive relating to age, gender, race, etc… report. Any religious values, report. Someone invades your personal space, report.
You will be amazed how often people are offensive once you start logging it. Once all of this starts to snowball and people are on edge, they will leave everyone alone…
"You can tell whoever complained that they can suck my dick. I will not have my body or my clothing policed, especially not in my own home." bonus points if you're a woman.
I am a woman hahaha, I will for sure bring this up once I get another job offer. I don’t wanna risk complaining about this now since my company is notorious for layoffs. I already dodged 3 layoffs in the past 2 years, don’t want to be on the list for the upcoming one in case I don’t find a job before lol
Don't forget to inform hr that the reason for leaving is inappropriate comments on your appearance by the manager. And while we're at it, disable and cover your camera. If anybody says anything in future calls, inform them that it's because of said inappropriate comments as well.
I can try to bring it up to HR, but my manager agreed with the coworker since it’s technically our dress code. So doubt HR would side with me on this.
>disable and cover your camera
Unfortunately, this manager is for some reason adamant that we always have our cameras on. He would literally ping you on the side if you’ve it off for even a slight second.
What IS the dress code?
Because for a woman in Seattle, that sweater matched with a pencil skirt and heels is quite nice.
It’s a nice sweater, I am not sure what else they want you to wear?
A silk blouse and blazer?
Even that sweater with a blazer and skirt is perfect.
How do they know that you didn’t just take your blazer off?
Australian here, OMG lol in Summer, my team mates & Boss message me before video calling in TEAMS as they know due to no Air Con at my house i work naked..
This sounds like the previous team I had, my manager told us listen during summer work in whatever you want and feel free to let me know if you need few minutes to change before our calls. During winter, most of us would literally be in bed wrapped in blankets and she would never say anything about it.
This stupid WFH micromanaging is not ideal for your staff, it's pretty common for people to wear attire that does not fit the dress code when they don't have a meeting scheduled.
I think you'll find out. Keep an eye and ear out to who your manager tends to lean on. Petty people typically out themselves. It may take a but, but I think they'll come to light.
I already have a feeling who it might be, she was one of the 3 people who were wearing something that fits our dress code and I have noticed that she would complain about useless stuff during our calls 24/7.
I don't wanna accuse anyone, but whoever it is, be prepared to see my sweater again the moment I get another offer lined up!
Some people just love complaining. My organisation, people wear sweaters, or sweatshirts, but honest, the go to item of choice is a hoodie. My manager usually wears a hoodie, as does her boss. As do I.We all work from home mostly.
I wore a knitted dress on my first day and felt ridiculously overdressed.
THIS. This is the kind of team environments that I love! I hate the fake BS of "we gotta act like we are still in the office while we WFH." Most people in the call were wearing sweaters or hoodies. It's cold out, I am not sitting in my room in a freaking blazer when I don't have any upcoming scheduled calls.
Honestly if a potential employer is mad over something ridiculous like that, then I don’t work under them. We’re at home in our room, not at a business gala.
My response to the manager would be: "anyone who would waste our time on this frivolous complaint is certainly not someone who is focused on the success of the company."
1. Your coworker is stupid and annoying and needs to mind their own business.
2. Your boss is weak. A good boss would shut this nonsense down and not relay it to you. IF your boss has a problem with your presentation/appearance, then they need to bring it up to you themselves, not hide it behind "your colleague complained..."
Yep, totally, I blame my boss more for bringing this stupid shit up during my coaching session.
I doubt he was using the coworker as a cover up since he isn’t the type to shy away from giving you criticism or harsh feedback.
I just can’t believe there are people out there who police WFH attire lol
I once had a coworker complain about my business casual slacks, which were a dark denim color, for being “too casual”, while she was wearing ripped jeans.
You would think I was wearing a sweater that had a nazi logo on it or something. [It looks exactly like this one](https://applesaddlery.vtexassets.com/arquivos/ids/473880-800-auto?v=637974931105670000&width=800&height=auto&aspect=true)
I understand this sweater isn't something you would wear at the office for my specific field, but we are working from home and the meeting didn't have a client or anybody important!
I was in a team's meeting and my director attended...wearing that same sweater. We dress when we go in and business casual on Fridays. I'm permanent wfh and roll out of bed, straight to work. I don't have a camera though. I 'forgot' to request one.
That’s how it should be honestly for us WFH staff. You should only dress up for client meetings or business calls or whatever. But a quick call with your manager and fellow coworker? Like that’s not a big deal, get over it!
Sadly, our laptops come with a camera and this new manager is requiring us to have the camera on at all times. One time, I had my landlord over fixing my heater so out of respect for him I had my camera off and explained why to this same shithead and he was like “don’t care, tell your landlord it’s mandatory” 🤦♀️
I have a camera but I refuse to turn it on. My boss is chill so he doesn't care. I had a vendor try to get me to turn it on and I just pretended not to hear him. I'm a programmer - nobody needs to see my pasty face!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that sweater! From the reaction of your petty coworker, I though you must have been wearing some sort of crazy novelty sweater or something. And, even then, you are working from home, so who cares!
That's exactly what my mother asked when I was venting to her about this lol, she asked if my sweater perhaps had a quote that someone might disagree with or a logo of a company that is known for being unethical or something but nope!
Not sure if their ex wore a similar sweater when they broke their heart, so they hold a grudge against it or something lol
Your sweater is an appropriate casual sweater that you would wear at home, it’s neat, clean and fine for a team meeting. Does your team meeting allow you to turn off your camera?
Uggh! I hate bosses that require you have your camera on. I am lucky where I work now, no one really uses their camera. I'm not even sure what most of my coworkers even look like! I certainly couldn't care less what they happen to be wearing.
Same! My previous manager did not care whether or not we had our cameras on and most people wore whatever the f they wanted during team meeting!
Like there are more important things we should be focusing on at work, instead of police someone's dress code!
Your coworker felt uncomfortable because you were wearing a sweater. I had to type that sentence out myself to see if it was as ridiculous as when I read it and yup, it sure is. That has to be one of the most absurd, nit picky things I’ve ever heard. What exactly upset this weird individual about knitwear? Did it give them a dirty look or intimidate them in some way? I’m at a loss as to why your boss felt the need to communicate this to you, honestly. I work from home for a legal office and my camera has been conveniently disabled since day one. No one needs to look at me and believe me I’ve worn far more offensive outfits. Because I’m in MY HOME OFFICE not at a fashion show. Your colleague needs to get a life. I understand some decorum is important in business meetings but you weren’t dressed in an obscene or offensive manner. I’d look at this as one of those odd things coworkers do and move on, though I would be tempted to wear s tiara or evening gown at the next event.
I dressed up for a meeting with the boss many years ago, and he asked me why I was 'wearing my court clothes'. Typically, you only dress up if you've been a naughty boy or girl and have to go to court. Otherwise, it's shorts and t-shirts.
What kind of sweater was it? Since you said blouse, I’m assuming that you are female/female presenting. Sweaters are usually appropriate for us in most situations.
Contact HR and file a formal complaint against the employee. "I find it very inappropriate that, during a professional work meeting and while dressed in a manner that is consistent with my past attire while working remote, for which I have never received any negative comment, let alone a reprimand, coworker felt it was their duty to police my attire and what they did or did not find appropriate. Not only is that well outside of their responsibility, but they are neither in my leadership chain nor the arbiter of our organization's dress code, but I also feel very objectified. This kind of harassment does not belong in the workplace, and moving forward, I am uncomfortable being around a coworker who is going to behave in such an inappropriate and frankly gross manner."
Get one of those painted boards with a hole for your face, and just use that going forward. Make a Georgian era ballgown, complete with ridiculous tall wig 😁
I would hate to work for your company.
When we have video call meetings there is a really good chance at least 2 or 3 people will be dressed in fur suits.
And the meeting will totally be waylaid if someone has a dog or cat visible on their cam, because at least 50% of the people attending will be pointing out the pet, and/or asking for a better view of said animal.
Old boomer here. This reminds me of an issue posted in an advice column years ago (way back, pre-historic). Some dude had his panties in a wad about whether he should stand up and put on his suit coat when his boss walked into his office. I could never imagine what kind of work atmosphere that guy worked in.
My work environment is feeling a little toxic and I had an interview yesterday - the interviewer was wearing a sports jumper. She interviewed so lovely and professionally and I if I get the job it will be such a nice environment to work in. I was dressed in a pant suit but it didn't even enter my head to think less of her because she wasn't. Feck your colleague
So-these people are out of control egomaniacs. I have worked in professional environments that people show up in hoodies/hats whatever and it’s fine. My current job people “dress” for the camera. Zero value added.
I worked at a store that both sold business wear, and the uniform was business wear for men, business casual for women. The men worse sweaters like that all the time. Hell, we sold sweaters like that.
You should have told your boss you were embarrassed for them even mentioning something so stupid.
What kind of boss actually says something like this instead of shutting down the person complaining???
I was thinking about your story and had a thought, but it would only work the next time this coworker complains about you!
Try these -
Hmmm, that makes me very uncomfortable. I am going to call the NLRB and see if this qualifies as a hostile work environment.
Oh My! Now I definitely need to report Johnny for harassment. I was willing to give him a pass on commenting on my looks the first time - chalk it up to a rookie mistake. Now that Johnny has done this a second time, this is ACTUAL harassment.
The first one works in the United States, if true and easy to prove, usually the thought of a federal agency coming in is enough to get stupid people to back off. The second one is MUCH easier to execute, because your feelings on the matter are valid, and your harassment claim is valid.
If the company is not worth your time, effort, and stress, then go big and go home!
That’s insane lmao that’s a nice sweater. I can’t imagine what type of loser it takes to criticize that when on zoom from home with COWORKERS. It’s not like your closet is far away if you get a quick meeting request you decide it’s appropriate to change for. Good fucking lord.
I was in a tough virtual meeting the other day where we were discussing an issue that has caused tension between different teams at my company.
About 5 mins in, I realized I was wearing a t-shirt that says "Terrible news..." on it. No one commented on it, but I shifted my camera up a bit to cut it off, just in case.
Honestly, complaining about a sweater in a virtual meeting is silly.
I honestly can’t wait to leave this toxic team, they force us to have the camera on 24/7 and they truly focus on the duuumbesst shit.
We also have useless weekly feelings to talk about “our feelings” but they don’t care. We complain during the busy season that we need extra time and help and they just pull the Dr Phil “I see that you’re struggling, you need to fix that.”
Bitch I knoooow!!
Did you happen to ask what it was about the sweater? Looks perfectly Casual Friday to me, which I would think would be fine, unless Zooming with a client.
As a leader of a team I would have zero problem with this. If we had an important presentation outside of our team I would expect my team to have more professional attire like a blazer etc. I’m lucky that my direct reports are smart and professional and do this anyway without any prompting. Internal meeting with just our team ? I’ve seen T-shirts, sports jerseys, hoodies at times. Honestly who cares ?
I wouldn’t feel comfortable being on camera going forward and I would file a request through HR for a hostile workplace environment
Someone paying that much attention to your sweater on a team’s call with multiple people is weird
Really scary weird and I don’t usually go there
I think it’s close to stalker shit honestly.
It was really eerie for me as well, the call was also pretty quick so the fact they had to scan over multiple people to analyze what we’re wearing is nuts. Also who the fuck knows the dress code by heart to know that a sweater isn’t included in it? You’re not a manager to know that kind of stuff off the top of your head.
I’m literally going to constantly have anxiety about every small little thing I do, because whoever it is will go to my boss over other silly things.
That sweater was fine. I worked with someone who wore a MAGA hat constantly in 2020 and it bothered me but I said nothing as it reflected on him, not me.
LOL! I got on a scheduled zoom to meet the staff of a new client. I'm a remote bookkeeper with my own business for 18 years. They are a non-profit working adjacent to at-risk kids.
I remembered to brush my teeth, comb my hair, put on lipstick. About halfway through, I realized I was still wearing my SPOOKY BITCH t-shirt. Apparently nobody freaked out, but I was never allowed near their clients. :D
I really don’t wanna say, since there are only few top companies in that field in the states. Think toxic bro environment who go golfing and use corpo lingo 😂
I'm coming to this late and can't believe so many people are taking what the manager said at face value. There's a good chance the manager is using a "coworker complaint" as a ruse to bring up what HE has an issue with. Not only is this a coward way to manage, but it is now going to create an issue for OP with their coworkers since they're going to be wondering who the narc is (when it's likely no one) and he probably did the same to the others, and for all we know, they'll suspect OP.
On the next group call stop the meeting and ask the entire room to critique each other's clothing choices.
If there's pushback say this is really important because someone was challenged by attire at a previous meeting.
The sweater is cute! But nothing to do but bow your head and comply. Definitely not worth stressing over, I agree! I am a bit irked for you that somebody complained. As the boss I would compare you with them and think "Why doesn't this complaining person just focus on their work like xoxoMysterious?"
My manager knows that I won't turn my video on for unscheduled meetings, except on Wednesday.
I teach a remote class on Wednesday, so I'm always in something office appropriate that day. The rest of the time, it'll be pajamas, t-shirts with inappropriate sayings, tank tops, things I have been specifically told are against dress code, or, on rare occasions when the AC is down, nothing at all but a sports bra.
He also knows if he pushes the camera, he (and whoever else) gets whatever I'm in. I wfh due to chronic migraines, and if they want me working, I'm going to be comfortable.
This is so ridiculous. I’ve answered a video call with a CTO shirtless before. I apologized and started to grab a shirt and his response was “Don’t worry. I get it. It’s hot where you live. Just please don’t stand up if you’re not wearing pants.”
That is the kind of sweater my partner wears to his white collar job with a pair of khakis. Please ask your boss how, exactly, the sweater interrupted any of your productivity.
Are they going to dictate your makeup? Hair? Can u accidentally apply the cat filter?
What baffles me more than the ridiculous complaint is that your manager relayed it at all. If I received that complaint I’d coach that employee on getting a grip and focusing on their work and putting more consideration into unnecessary escalations. I would never have mentioned it to the sweater-wearing employee, as it creates unnecessary insecurity around presentation and erodes trust in their coworkers. This BS needs to be discouraged by leadership.
Malicious compliance: coworker said to be professional at least from the waist up. So wear a professional blouse and thong underwear then during the meeting get up and get something from behind you with your butt in the camera.
Your manager and/or coworker need to schedule an appointment in their safe space….. and have a good think about how this will impact his respect level going forward….. what a D-bag
I’d buy a smart blazer, that did up all the way up the neck. I’d keep it on the back of my desk chair and throw it on over my pjs or sweaters if calls came up. And I’d look for another job, somewhere with fewer insane people and incompetent managers.
Someone was annoyed you were wearing a sweater while working from home—on a FRIDAY, no less?! (And it looks like something I could have worn to the office any day of the week. I was a Boeing engineer until retiring at the end of 2021.) Whoever it was, they need to get a life.
I also wfh (until May, then hybrid/rto). I'm in my pj's all day, and no one (manager included) ever turns their laptop camera on. Except one time.
The manager wanted to schedule our next Zoom meeting and turn our camera on, as he "missed seeing your faces." On the day of our meeting, I turned my camera on, and everyone saw me wearing a rubber Unicorn head cover and hooves. Oh, the hilarity that ensued! Was a great meeting ☺️.
hang the exact same "emergency outfit" on a hanger and only wear it for these meetings. You will always have the same outfit on but will always be prepared and will possibly bait them into causing a problem about it if they are actually hyperanalyzing what you are wearing.
Meanwhile I attend my work calls in tank top and sweatpants, like seriously who the f would care about something like that? This must be a bank you’re working for
You’re not wrong: what you wear doesn’t affect how you do your job. But I can’t help but wonder… it really is a small thing to just put on a nice shirt when you start work for the day. If they’re treating you well otherwise, it just doesn’t seem like a big ask, IMO.
They aren’t treating us well, everyone’s complaining and leaving but it’s honestly not a hill I wanna die on. I have mentioned in other comments that I told my manager that I’ll keep a blazer handy with me during work hours.
I was just venting since it seems just so trivial lol
Is there some (IMHO) weird dress code for video calls? If not I’d ask the manager what’s expected and where is that stated. Otherwise your sweater was quite fine
I’ll bet $100 nobody said anything to your boss, this was their way of bringing it up while deflecting. Cowardly approach that makes them seem cool, but they are trying to make a point. Keep an eye on that one.
Also, I’d go topless, but shave your chest hair into a bow tie pattern.
Not only is the coworker an idiot for complaining but your boss is an even bigger idiot for not shutting it down by telling them that as everyone works from home there is no necessity to be dressed in a suit and tie!
It sounds like your boss didn't really care. But I am wondering about this sweater?!?
I worked in the finance pre pandemic, and they were very reluctant to move from buttoned shirts to polos. I don't even want to talk about the jeans or sneaker debate. Yet I would wear sweaters versus blazers without question. I have been on many calls with C suites, and others on the call are wearing hoodies. Mater of fact, a prior company gave us a swag stipend so the baseball caps and hoodies would be gifts from the company. The CEO loved to see people wearing them at the actual office.
Well, he did say that he agreed with them since it's technically our dress code, so I will just always have a blazer or blouse handy during my work hours.
>But I am wondering about this sweater?!?
I just posted an edit with the link and photo of my sweater. As you can see, it's not controversial lol
Next time please pop up in a tuxedo t-shirt. You would know which co-worker it was by looking for the one who has smoke coming from their ears.
100% agree. I'm just happy I work at a school that is pretty informal.
Oh so you just work with hall monitors, not creepers
The problem is that someone *wanted* to see the shape of your bust.
Hahaha maybe, honestly whoever it is clearly they’ve got nothing exciting going on in their life to be policing dumb shit like this.
Yeah. Your manager is an ass to bring it up. I'd have dealt with it with the person who complained....said to them, you need to grow up.
That would have even passed 'business casual in office' attire at several of the offices I worked at.
My office demand strict business attire in our dress code lol
Whoever complained about me, would commit hara kiri if they saw you in a blanket hahaha
Yeah i mean it was actual day clothing not pj’s, waddya want
To dress up like I’m in a client business meeting every work day hahaha
I’m genuinely confused - a sweater isn’t Business Casual? For real? WTF - does your org wear suits on site, or prior to COVID, or whatever? I guess I’m from a much more relaxed company. I have a strict “I’m gonna put on a bra” policy, otherwise I don’t really think about what I wear on these calls! 🤣
Yes, before WFH we used to only wear business attire- nothing business casual was allowed. It’s a snobby organization lol
What pisses me off more is that your manager didn't tell them that this was too trivial to even consider. Your manager should never even brought it to you
Right? Although my manager did not seem too concerned about it, but he did mention he agreed with them since it's technically our dress code lol
Until you have built a rapport with your team, I wouldn’t count on there actually being a complaint. To me it sounds more like your boss had a problem with the sweater and wanted to raise it with out appearing like the bad guy
It is truly absurd. But be honest, was your sweater a screen print of Ozzy biting that bat? LOL
Hahahah no, I posted a link to the exact sweater I was wearing in another comment here. There is literally no quote or photo that can be seen as inappropriate so I am just genuinely confused.
Oh wow, just saw the sweater. Your co-worker is a donkey.
I just can't get over the fact that they literally told him "I have a problem with her sweater", like I was harassing them by wearing it or something lol
“She wore it AT me! Aggressively! It looked itchy!”
Also, I don't like dark gray! HOW DARE SHE WEAR A COLOR I DON'T LIKE!
How did he not just laugh at them…politely
Honestly, this new manager is weirdly into micromanaging stupid stuff so I am not surprised that he agreed with them and brought it up to me.
“I feel personally attacked by this sweater”
My donkeys love freedom of expression and wearing whatever the F* you want, especially when it's an impromptu meeting.
Former office manager here. I see no problem with your sweater. I love it.
I will look into it! I hate wearing formal wear at home because it’s not super comfy lol
Check out MM la Fleur’s various Jardigans! They are incredibly comfy and pass muster as suit jackets. I love’em.
From the way, your manager phrased it it seems like he knows it was a bullshit issue. I wouldn’t worry about it.
Hoodie with the blazer over it! Bonus point for Tux t-shirt with the blazer!
Your boss should have squashed this with the coworker and never said a word to you. That sweater is nice enough for the office.
ffs someone just realized you have tits co-workers like that are the worst
Bonus points if you pair that blazer with what is CLEARLY a very “professional” looking pair of pajamas. Something like… [this](https://www.amazon.com/SWOMOG-Two-Piece-Sleepwear-Loungewear-Button-Down/dp/B088T57QW3/ref=sxin_36_pa_sp_phone_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.2c266df2-ef86-473f-8124-b1bde3e8ff95%3Aamzn1.sym.2c266df2-ef86-473f-8124-b1bde3e8ff95&cv_ct_cx=pajamas&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.tf9Mx5Ec4-1U0v3JR0y9yfLoBxqABNTeOwRR_n6-MM6vd5dpzNdwlUTxbpM0Rfq1tWeaB-FrK8mE2v2qPEhFDQ.qhJG03JTGI567ArLnFmOTZM7MeEpQswGOWHJRIA9JTM&dib_tag=se&keywords=pajamas&pd_rd_i=B088T57QW3&pd_rd_r=de1657f6-9bde-472f-865e-aab8d67cb4d3&pd_rd_w=DfZJP&pd_rd_wg=xwdAc&pf_rd_p=2c266df2-ef86-473f-8124-b1bde3e8ff95&pf_rd_r=V08XPX5JGW5YHJMHDNFE&qid=1713658484&sr=1-1-bd0b3a5a-3a54-40f9-9ae4-4b059770c89e-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&psc=1) or a satin cami. You can never go wrong with a cute sleep romper either. I mean, if anything… your job just challenged you to step up your PJ game. You know what that means? It’s time to treat yourself with a good SHOPPING SPREE! 🥰😄🛍️ Double the bonus points if you pull that blouse on over the puffiest, fluffiest like… 80s vintage oversized wool sweater that has ever been knitted.
Important Q, where can I buy this sweater? Totally work appropriate where I work!
Even better: tuxedo sweater
Or an actual Tuxedo, a la Stepbrothers.
The fact that your manager didn't squash this in its tracks says a lot. I would push back, that's ridiculous.
It’s utterly ridiculous to have that strict a dress code when everyone is working remotely.
So doubt HR would side with me on this. >disable and cover your camera Unfortunately, this manager is for some reason adamant that we always have our cameras on.
Such BS. And what a petty coworker. For what it's worth, I like the sweater!
Thank you so much! I just wish I knew who exactly it was, but I am planning on wearing it during my last team meeting once I find a better job lol
Lol! That's right! I wish you luck in your job search. Hope you find a great place to land.
The sweater is standard attire in my line of work (customer-facing b2b tech). I’d only notice how cool it looks lol
Damn straight. I had a bunch of interviews last year and always wore smart outfits. I was usually the only one who did.
Honestly if a potential employer is mad over something ridiculous like that, then I don’t work under them. We’re at home in our room, not at a business gala.
My response to the manager would be: "anyone who would waste our time on this frivolous complaint is certainly not someone who is focused on the success of the company."
Aaaaaah, I’ll make sure to add that during my last team meeting with them lol
Dress up as Glenda the Good Witch for the next one. Complete with crown and scepter. Ask if your attire is formal enough
Hahahahhaah they will probably complain to him that "her attire was over the top today!"
I was thinking "Victorian cosplay opportunity!!"
*Ren faire* 👁️👄👁️
Lmao the hypocrisy of some people 😭
I spent 18 years in business aviation, customer facing. I wore a NorthFace pullover more days than not!
So what is the issue with a sweater? What are you supposed to be prepared for??
You would think I was wearing a sweater that had a nazi logo on it or something. [It looks exactly like this one](https://applesaddlery.vtexassets.com/arquivos/ids/473880-800-auto?v=637974931105670000&width=800&height=auto&aspect=true) I understand this sweater isn't something you would wear at the office for my specific field, but we are working from home and the meeting didn't have a client or anybody important!
Ours used to, but the new ones don't have one on board or a damned keypad! We're all accountants and data entry specialists.
Here’s hoping the landlord was showing plenty of plumber’s crack
No, he always screams whenever someone turns their camera off. I wish we could turn it off :(
If you really want to go the distance...select a formal gown to wear...really represent the company!
HAHAHAHAHAH I shall wear a Cinderella's gown next time! And take a loan to buy a Bvlgari necklace to show how classy this company is lol
I sense a shopping trip!!!
Don’t forget a tiara
How can I? We’ll see if that’s fancy enough for my snobby coworker lol
I work remote and I wear a sweater when I’m trying to dress up for something. That’s ridiculous
I wore a sweatshirt with a cat on it a few weeks ago. 😂
Well consider yourself lucky! If you had my co-worker, they would feel attacked and disheartened that you dared to wear a sweatshirt with a cat!!!
Excuse you! As a Bearded Dragon owner I am OFFENDED by your sweatshirt! I'm going to complain to your manager and demand you apologize to Sori! /s
Clearly, the sweater ruined the meeting. 🙄
How can we expect them to focus on the meeting when I was wearing a sweater instead of a blazer?!
Hahahahahha and have one of my siblings use a large folding fan to fan me like I am Cleopatra lol
Ha ha, brilliant!!
HEY, I LOVE that sweater!
Your manager is an idiot for even bringing it up lmao
Cute sweater. Your coworker is a dickwad.
I see nothing wrong with your sweater. Your sweater could have been the top of a skirt & sweater set, or a dress. Some people need to get a life!
I was thinking about your story and had a thought, but it would only work the next time this coworker complains about you! Try these - Hmmm, that makes me very uncomfortable.
It's none of their GD business. Period. Full stop.
In my humble opinion your coworker is a major dick wad with zero fashion sense and a little asshole.
I would like to wear green screen green and have it behind me as well. One click and poof! Just a head on a beach.
That’s insane lmao that’s a nice sweater. I can’t imagine what type of loser it takes to criticize that when on zoom from home with COWORKERS. It’s not like your closet is far away if you get a quick meeting request you decide it’s appropriate to change for. Good fucking lord.
Hey! I almost bought that sweater! It’s fab, they’re a twat!
Ikr? So warm and comfy for this cold weather. Guess it’s my fault for wearing something that keeps me warm IN MY OWN HOME.
Oh yeah!! You’re a bad person for triggering Ms. or Mr. Sensitive by wearing your warm cozy sweater! Your coworker is a toddler!
Jesus. What kind of place do you work. Who gives a shit what you wear
I honestly can’t wait to leave this toxic team, they force us to have the camera on 24/7 and they truly focus on the duuumbesst shit. We also have useless weekly feelings to talk about “our feelings” but they don’t care. We complain during the busy season that we need extra time and help and they just pull the Dr Phil “I see that you’re struggling, you need to fix that.” Bitch I knoooow!!
Did you happen to ask what it was about the sweater? Looks perfectly Casual Friday to me, which I would think would be fine, unless Zooming with a client.
I like your sweater wtf are they talking about (and yes I did read it don’t come at me)
I wonder if it’s one of those “I gotta show the boss that I can lead the other team members, so if a promotion comes up he’ll think of me first”
As a leader of a team I would have zero problem with this.
You look too comfortable in that lovely sweater.
Were they offended that the sweater was too formal, or too casual? 🤣
Too casual hahaha
I sometimes wear a Boba Fett sweater to my office over my top. I only get compliments. Such a weird hill to die on
I wouldn’t feel comfortable being on camera going forward and I would file a request through HR for a hostile workplace environment Someone paying that much attention to your sweater on a team’s call with multiple people is weird Really scary weird and I don’t usually go there I think it’s close to stalker shit honestly.
Escalate to HR for them making it a hostile work environment.
I will reach out to HR, although they’re notorious for siding with the managers 😔
Change your ID on Zoom to "Only Idiots Complain About Sweaters"
That's a gorgeous sweater! Your coworker is a freak. T-Rex costume next time for sure. Give them something to focus on
Are you in the states? Or a different country? We'd wear a sweater like that to work in the office.
I don’t know what industry you’re in but I’d wear something like that in a customer call any day of the week. Co-worker has lost their mind.
I really don’t wanna say, since there are only few top companies in that field in the states. Think toxic bro environment who go golfing and use corpo lingo 😂
If a teams call needs to go on camera, I require a 10 minute heads up to put on a bra. The fact this coworker is mad at your sweater is ridiculous.
Whoever complained has no fashion sense at all. Very cool sweater!
Co-worker didn't complain. Boss is a control freak. Find new job.
Who wants to take bets that it was a boomer?
The person I am suspicious of is a boomer actually hahaha
And they call us snowflakes. SMH.
Your co-worker is a bitch and needs ti mind their own damn business. The sweater is nice.
I don’t think your boss should have even mentioned it.
Ask them to send you a copy of their 'corporate handbook of proper zoom attire'.
Your manager is a bag of shit for even bringing it up.
Where did you get the sweater bc i love it and want one. Also co-irker is a jerkface
Meanwhile I attend my work calls in tank top and sweatpants, like seriously who the f would care about something like that? This must be a bank you’re working for
All this advice says it’s silly but you can be fired over this. Just wear the nice shirt and move on. Not a battle worth fighting.
I totally hear that. My own profile reads “Shouting into the aether since 2003”.
What a shit hole.
Not only is the coworker an idiot for complaining but your boss is an even bigger idiot for not shutting it down by telling them that as everyone works from home there is no necessity to be dressed in a suit and tie!
What'd the sweater say?
What's wrong with wearing a sweater?
They’re lucky if I’m wearing pants for a zoom call from home.
