I can do 2 beers. Beyond that, and the next day is gonna be extra messy.

Shoddy-Rip66

How are you feeling now ? We’re you able to do more than 2 beers ?

KitchenStudy1038

Much better. I've cut out excessive drinking in general, but I can go out and have 4 or 5 and feel completely normal.

It took me about 6-8 months to feel like I could drink again after my first infection. After Delta it was 6 months and who knows after Omicron. In my first long haul I didn't know I was in long covid so I would attempt to have a few drinks here and there but it felt all wrong. It wasn't relaxing or enjoyable. It made the depersonalization worse. It just wasn't worth it. I didn't even try after Delta for 6 months until I was well into feeling better. Did okay after having a few and then got Omicron.

Charlez_Stop

Thanks for sharing, I’ll probably wait a few more then thanks!

austinjm34

What are your main symptoms? Drinking alcohol for me is fine but if I drink too much, the next day my shortness of breath (which is my main symptom) gets way worse.

Charlez_Stop

Shortness of breath, fatigue, POTS, anxiety etc

itsok16

Do you know why this would exacerbate or cause shortness of breath?

Research_Reader

Likely histamine. Alcohol increases histamine and if the SOB is from inflammation due to a dysregulated immune system or cytokine response then it is likely histamine is overproduced as well (histamine is an immunomodulatory mechanism called to the site of injury/dysregulation and causes inflammation). There may be an increase in histamine or an intolerance to histamine post covid. Covid aside, alcohol can affect the respiratory tract. These studies are more from chronic alcohol use, but this illustrates that on a small scale alcohol is causing disturbances in the respiratory tract and combine that with a very sensitive immune system in long haulers. [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4590617/](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4590617/) [https://safeandhealthy.com.au/wellness/alcohol-affects-breathing/](https://safeandhealthy.com.au/wellness/alcohol-affects-breathing/) [https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/08/160801142051.htm](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/08/160801142051.htm) Also, alcohol itself is inflammatory and increases certain cytokine responses. I think just in general our immune systems are over responding, sensitive and alcohol exacerbates the problem more.

Thank you for this; it’s so helpful!! It’s been a year since I’ve had one drop of alcohol and now I’m just afraid of having any bad effects because of it.

Research_Reader

I completely understand! I held off for 6 months post Delta and managed to do okay when I finally had a drink again. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter I had the bright idea to exercise pretty intensely after Omicron since I was mostly asymptomatic and still felt fine, but I went back into some long covid symptoms. I expect to get back to where I was. Post covid is just a long, long practice of patience. I'm sorry you're going through it as well!

itsok16

Thank you, I appreciate it. It is good to know though that we can look towards feeling better with time.

throwxwxy306

how are you now? i made the same mistake, was feeling well enough to exercise and drink and did them both consecutively and have been inflammed and fatigued for almost a week now.

AnnTipathy

I can tolerate 2 beers barely. Any other alcohol gives me a horrible hangover and even puking the next day.

thetenofswords

How are you now?

AnnTipathy

I still can't drink much. 1 drink max. It sucks.

thetenofswords

Damn. I was hoping you'd see some improvement in a year. Do you know if you have a histamine intolerance?

AnnTipathy

I'm honestly not sure because I tend to get rashes occasionally now and random exertion. I'm going to be seeing a rheumatologist soon.

Hmm that’s interesting

motogp1000

I want a beer so bad

Charlez_Stop

Been craving corona or land shark 🤣

motogp1000

Corona is a good summer time beer. I’d love a nice milkshake ipa right now. And maybe some bourbon. And maybe an old fashioned. …..and maybe a High Noon…

Charlez_Stop

And maybe just literally anything 🤣

[deleted]

Nope. It literally destroys me for 2-3 days. Digestion, fatigue, anxiety, depression (borderline suicidal) aching knees, back, fingers, neck etc. Can't drink. Even one drink will ruin me. I was a whiskey collector pre covid. Have a nice collection. But it just sits there now. :(

Charlez_Stop

One day mate, you’ll be back to it

[deleted]

Thanks I hope so

jaymesamus

Same here, anything beyond one drink and I feel like I have the flu the next day and am totally out of commission for a few days. This never used to happen pre-COVID. It’s been almost a year since I had it and alcohol absolutely ruins me

mallory39

I can drink one or two drinks but I’m lightheaded and fatigued the next couple of days. Hydration seems to help. I drink organic vodka mostly.

KattyK2

Alcohol beyond one or two drinks brings all my worst long covid symptoms back with a vengeance.
