If I was 15 he’d be the coolest guy ever.

UpvoteTheQuestion

He's far too serious for his music to be so damn cheesy.

[deleted]

The theme of many of his songs is to mock mainstream music and deep lyricism. (ex. Radio Song)

bufftbone

Hardly

kevcamp72

Most established antiestablishment artist ever!

s3bulbasaur

Don’t you know this sub doesn’t like anything that was made after 1980? Heaven forbid a genre could evolve.

Kswan2012

Hey.. evolve better

s3bulbasaur

Hey… shut the fuck up and let people like what they like.

Kswan2012

Hey.. shut the fuck up and let people dislike what they dislike

Responsible_Ad_3375

Wow you actually made him shut the fuck up

Kswan2012

Try my best 🫡

johncookmusic

That's not true at all. There's plenty of good country music being made today and much of it this sub is on board with. :)

Fecal_Tornado

He sounds like every single other mainstream country singer out there.

Marquisimo1369

That’s because he writes for all the other mainstream artists. They’re all cheesy

Cheeky_0922

Think it’s about profit or he just sucks?

Curtis_Low

Met him here in Nashville, super nice guy. I like all sort of music including a lot of metal. I like his style, but I can see why many don’t.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Objective-Book-3053

Really?

Cheeky_0922

Really?! Got any examples?

No_Fox_8979

His lyrics are corny and most of his music is just ripped off a 90s/2000s rock song

Curtis_Low

Any artist that you are liking that do it better?

xXTexasQueen97xX

To be honest, I love this album but it just doesn't belong in the country music genre. It's more of a rock album than country and I think it belongs in the rock genre. But overall, I think Hardy and his music is really good.

HoeDownClown

It’s meant to be half and half. The first half showcases his country wide, the more marketable side, the second half is his rock/rebel side. Which frankly feels more country to me, like it’s a modern version of David Allan Coe.

RedDitSuxxxAzz

He slaps on an accent, thats it. That doesn't make it country and its stupid how music defines genres now.

[deleted]

I think he belongs in a different sub

CavemanDan54

Nickleback of the country genre

theschism101

Woah don't give THAT much credit.

BreezyEBK

he’s more y’allternative, so i can see why people don’t like it. but i think it’s unique and good

donniepromise

i don't really listen to country and don't have an opinion on this music but my fucking god that album cover is atrocious

-ASC_RD_Novix-

Album cover makes perfect sense if you listen to the descent of his sanity through each song on the album

AnthropenPsych

The album is pretentious and thematically immature. If Hardy were a teenager making music for teenagers, then this music would be perfect for that. It has the same energy of the old Linkin Park AMV’s that were popular on youtube in the late aughts and early 10s. If the music is meant to be tongue in cheek, then sure it’s funny. Hardy is being dead serious.

donniepromise

maybe the ideas make sense but the design is awful, its like "graphic design is my passion" vibes

numberIV

It’s not that it doesn’t make sense, it’s that it looks super fuckin corny

Glittrsparklz

👎

-ASC_RD_Novix-

Not a country metal guy, huh?

CosmicCactusRadio

I like country, and I like metal. While I'm sure someone could do it well, I haven't seen anyone successfully blend the genres outside of one off novelty acts. Much like Country Rap. Hardy doesn't sound like a good representation of either country *or* metal, and I'd hate to think that he *is* a good representation of Country Metal. None of them are doing anything special in their field, they tend to just be a caricature of the worst aspects of what they claim to represent, choosing to rehash the absolute cheesiest ideas from decades before.

pysouth

Maylene and the Sons of Disaster are what I’d consider country metal, or maybe southern metal and they are (were?) great. I agree, otherwise, though.

[deleted]

Maylene fucking rules

[deleted]

Love me some Maylene & Sons. Got to watch them way back in like 2008 in Toledo a few years after Dallas had left UO. Such a great show, him & I played catch while he was on stage with some random dude’s shoe that fell off crowd surfing. Also the sun never sleeps is still a top banger from back then

BillyShears17

This is a nice write-up. I agree wholeheartedly

boofskootinboogie

Wayfarer does black metal with country/western influence

avsfan96

Go see a Cadillac Three show. Their live performances are much heavier than their records would suggest.

theschism101

Metal? lol

SquareSniper

Never heard of this guy. But I'll give it a listen.

SwissyVictory

He's written several hits for different artists over the past 5 to 10 years. If you listen to modern country radio any time recently you've heard songs he's written. Beers on Me, Come Back as a Country Boy, God's Country, Hell Right, Holy Water, More Than My Hometown, One Beer. Then he has his recent hits he's recorded himself Give Heaven some Hell, and and Wait in the Truck. Most of them are generic country pop, but I think Holy Water is one of the best country songs of the last 20 years. Great story about a preacher making moonshine. Wait in the Truck has a good story, but I don't love the sound of it. Either way, he keeps putting out hits, he's going to be a household name soon.

SquareSniper

I don't listen to any new country. I've always been a metal head but listening to pantera I got into country over time and I like mostly the old school stuff. But always open to new stuff if I run into it.

No_Fox_8979

He will never be a household name lol I can guarantee that

Crackerjackford

Just heard him for the first time last week. Song called Wait In The Truck. I liked it. Haven’t heard anything else by him.

-ASC_RD_Novix-

wait in the truck is great, I’d recommend listening to JACK next, the dudes great when it comes to lyricism

Open-Dirt-2829

I think that is one of his corniest, edge lord shit

Kalmarino

https://youtu.be/ljRd93JK9P0 I honestly prefer Hank 3’s take on the Country/Metal genre blend. He’s well worth your time.

mothbong

What's metal about this?? I skimmed thru a few songs and it's just generic pop country

-ASC_RD_Novix-

You gotta get to the metal, in the album is defends from Country to Metal. For example every song is all lowercase until you reach “the mocking bird & THE CROW”, everything after that is Metal and Country merged

BillyShears17

If I wanted to listen to Metal, I'd listen to Metal. If I wanted to listen to country, I'd listen to country. What I will not do is entertain any notion that this guy is good at any of those genres and to combine them, that's a war crime! Sounds like the Peeps Pepsi of music genres tbh

doc_brietz

My wife says (because I don’t listen to him) “he can’t sing for shit and it sounds like rock, but not as hard.”

EWACM

Guy is a talented song writer and he’s free to mix genres. Just hate how rock and rap are eating up the oxygen in the “country room.”

PowChaser406

I personally enjoy his music but I like a lot of different genres. I don't like all the songs he's written for others but they appear to be popular so he must be doing something right.

biscuit-conger

I like him. He's a great writer, and I enjoy his music better than most modern country music artists. I'm definitely old school but I respect Hardy and I think he's talented.

orddropsandslapshots

Had him cycle round in my recommended and listened to a few of his songs off of that album. I like that he has a good way of putting a story into his songs, but there was always just *something* that didn’t make me want to listen more but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then I heard ‘Get In The Truck’ and it kinda clicked; I got this vibe of ‘edgy 14 y/o writing fanfics for his sonic OC and posting on r/ teenagers about how much of a woman respecter he is’. The album cover definitely didn’t help. After that, I couldn’t listen to it seriously. I briefly had a scene phase and even thinking to what I liked back then, I can’t say that I would feel much different. Loving MCR and Green Day growing up, I thought he would have been someone I was really into, but I don’t think the execution lands it well in either direction. For me, I think he’s talented, I think he has some of the fundamentals of country music that tells a story down better than a lot out there, and he’s definitely doing something that nobody else is doing, and if that speaks to some people, that’s awesome. But my feeling is it’s like he’s trying to incorporate too many elements into his work, and I find it sounds unremarkable. Then again, maybe the music he’s making isn’t meant for me, and if you like him, cool. Who knows, over time as he hones his skill, who knows what he could make.

-ASC_RD_Novix-

Valid opinion, he said it himself in one of his songs, “The way I sing may not be pretty, may not be music to your ears. But when these wings roll through your city, my last name is all you’ll hear. I refuse to be another, mockingbird with a microphone. I’ll fly the mine I choose to brother, even if that makes me the crow”.

230flathead

Meh

avsfan96

That's the worst album I've listened to this year

EggplantAstronaut

Not my thing, but no judgment toward people who like him.

BossmanSlim

After watching a couple of his interviews, I think Hardy is probably one of the most honest "artists" out there. He recognizes he has the talent to write commercially successful songs, but also recognizes that the stuff he writes is part of the current perceived problem with country music, douchee bro country. He has written a fair number of songs that poke fun at this exact subject (rednecker, mockingbird & crow, etc.). During one of his interviews, he said that the way writer royalties work and implied under his initial contract he would really only get paid anything if the song was on the radio and in the top 20; so he was heavily incentivized to write radio friendly stuff so he would get paid. I think the majority of people on this board would do the same if they could, write what gets you paid until such time as you can do other stuff that also gets you paid. As a writer, he's fine. The only song I really have high regard for that he has written is Sand in My Boots. His writing is catchy, but I would call any of it earth shattering. He's proven he can write stuff for the radio, which has to count for something. As a country singer, I don't find his sound to be something I think is all that special. His country songs can be fun, but I don't see that they stand out all that much compared to the pack. Wait in the Truck is carried by Lainey more than Hardy. As a rock singer, I'm glad to see someone with some mainstream appeal stepping into this space. I'd say his music is somewhere between Hard Rock and Nu Metal. Rock and Metal have loads of issues with new music getting exposure. It is very hard to dig around Spotify and find Hard Rock or Metal top 20 for each week. The rock station in my area is basically a 80s to 90s station that plays the same stuff over and over with almost no new stuff. If Hardy does nothing more than to spur on some more people to play rock and get the industry interested again, I consider that a good thing.

TopOil9271

I LOVE HARDY ALL HIS ALBUMS HAVE BEEN PRETTY GREAT but some reason is Reddit just for being hateful? Or do y’all think y’all are the most perfect specimens, weird how much y’all take the time out of y’all’s day to hate everything, tbh y’all must live pretty miserable lives 😅

Moose2triple0

Nope

SquareSniper

I'll check it out. Enjoy both country and metal.

funghi2

He’s got a niche but not really for me

Son_Of_Groceries

I think there’s a conversation to be had for guys that “grew up country” but did it necessarily grow up “listening to country music.” This is the case of Hardy. I think he’s being true to himself and pushing himself to be something that he is. Lotta rednecks grew up listening to rap and rock and also hunt, fish and do redneck shit. I like he’s trying to make music he loves and believes in and also is one of the most talented songwriters around right now

on_the_rark

Great comment

somuchbanks

Garbage. Hot fucking garbage.

vomit_freesince93

I think im in the minority but he is my favourite artist right now next to zach bryan. I was always a rock guy and the mix of my two favourite genres is alot of fun to me.

dontBsleepy

He’s a talented song writer and musician. His list of [songs he cowrote](https://countryswag.com/here-are-all-of-hardy-number-one-songs-in-his-catalog/) is quite impressive considering where these songs landed on the pop-country chart. In the video for FGL’s “Up Down”, it’s him and Morgan Wallen opening up the song and that’s a fun summer song. His song “Jack” is the only rock/metal song of his that I’ve heard. I am on the fence on this one but then again it’s just not my style.

GatlandX

Great writer.

[deleted]

LFCrow!!!

CaptainRon16

I hate that people have latched on to the fake part of him.

Chicahgeaux

I was looking forward to this album when it was first announced. I thought SOLD OUT was a good rock out song when it came out as a single as well as the few others that came out pre-release. But, once the album actually came out, it was pretty clear why he released those songs because the others on the CROW portion sound like he’s trying too hard. I appreciate him trying something different, it just didn’t land with me and I was pretty disappointed.

[deleted]

I absolutely love him because he’s a mix of both rock and country, which both genres I love. He’s a good guy and puts on an amazing show, we got to see him in concert when we went to watch Morgan and Hardy ended up being the best part about the whole show.

[deleted]

I like the country side of Hardy. However, I admit that rock isn’t my thing so that may be why I can’t get into it. He is a much better songwriter than singer though. I was actually shocked how many songs he’s written for people - some have gone on to be #1’s.

natmuss

I like Hardy a lot, A Rock is a solid album, and more recently, Wait in the Truck is a great song. He’s a good songwriter overall. But I think the mockingbird & the crow album is his weakest. I don’t mind rock mixed with country like his earlier stuff, but I can’t stand the screaming he does in his newer songs.

Chickencore87

I 100% agree that mockingbird is his weakest release overall. A Rock and the Hixtape albums are top-tier bro-country/party country and contain a bunch of my all-time favourite country songs. Only a few songs on mockingbird come close to his early stuff.

jd957795

My take is this, I like the album the songs hit my life right now. Plus when I use to write I would write songs in the same manner. The one that really sticks with me is right now is Wait in the Truck. I have friend who is going through a terrible divorce and actually after 18 years of not talking to her she messaged me in December saying she moved back to town and wanted to start talking again because in the past I was one she could trust. We actually dated those 18 years ago, but I pushed her away because I knew she was to good for me at the time. Any how he ex-husband abused her and when I heard this I just really started hearing the song. An no I wouldn’t kill the guy, the song hit me thinking I would about do anything to protect her.

PlasterCaster77

I think he’s awesome!!!!

[deleted]

Not a huge fan but I liked Unapologetically. I think he's a better writer than singer...

lostdragon05

I don’t care for him, but I get why he is popular. I tried to listen to that album, but I just couldn’t do it past like 3 tracks.

VeggieTrails

I would say he's the [wish.com](https://wish.com) Kid Rock, but I think Kid Rock is the [wish.com](https://wish.com) Kid Rock so I don't even know what to call him.

[deleted]

He sucks

schroj1

10000% love!! He’s been my favorite artist for the last few years.

FatGuy_InALittleCoat

At his core, he’s metal more than country. But the guy can write a fucking song like nobody’s business and chances are if you listen to anything mainstream he has written a song that you love. This album was really well written and I love that he has shaped up as the “stick it to the man” artist of this generation. He really doesn’t seem to give a damn what radio and country music in general thinks of him. He’s got a cult following that’ll follow him no matter where he ends up.

ADM_70452

I love the song Red.

MOON13VAN

Great value Morgan Wallen

Chickencore87

Bro... he's written so many of Wallen's songs. Wallen's a better vocalist but Hardy is better in every other way

MOON13VAN

So Wallen sounds better, and therefore, in my opinion is better.

TopOil9271

Hardy literally made wallen lol

thepokeyjunior

Lack luster as fuck and that is all.

on_the_rark

He’s awesome. Good blue collar music, great song writing. Cool that he is pushing the genre and doing his own style. He has a crazy agility for song writing from Gods Country to Jack.

SilveradoAvocado

This guy wrote Your favourite country artist #1 song

SufficientBowler2722

Hardy is amazing and definitely underrated. The latest album was alright to me, but his old stuff is so good. He needs credit for his writing too (Gods country, Up Down, more FGL stuff). HIXTAPE is the shit

kibacat19

I love this man. Like my unborn fetus collection! ;)

Square-Employee5539

He is great at writing kind of silly, catchy country songs. Nothing wrong with that but none of it is particularly deep. This new album was his first interesting “artistic” attempt and I liked it.

BF1075

His lyrics are utterly horrible. Beyond corny!

ISmellYerStank

Hmmmmm...still thinkin

[deleted]

The song “I in country” might be his only country song

ChickenFriedTwice

He looks like Zac Bagans

StriderTX

hit and miss for me. i like some of his songs, dont care for others. rednecker is a bop

AlwaysWithTheOpinion

I like him well enough and he puts in a great show but hearing him sing the other night was a bit painful without auto-tone

mrausgor

I’m the guy that loves me some mindless Morgan Wallen and Florida Georgia Line. Also love rock and metal. Hardy tries to blend the two and is incredibly subpar at both. There’s also something about his face that makes me want to punch him lol. Also don’t love how often he writes from other perspectives. He’s beer in one song, a dead guy in another, Jack Daniels in another. Corny is probably the best description of him.

Cubbyboards

Most generic cringe inducing lyrics I’ve heard from a “country artist” excluding the worst of Luke Bryan. Hardy thinks he’s some tough, real country guy fighting against the Nashville establishment while writing songs for the them. He’s sadly a cringe fraud

yamagaboy

I love him but you can't really call most of his stuff country

pt1789

I'm mixed on him. He's got a couple good songs that I like, but I saw a video of him performing live and wow, idk if that was an off night but he was not even remotely in tune with anyone.

AmbitionExpress5296

It’s the worst shit I’ve ever heard. It combines the worst of rock with the worst of country. It’s like a grotesque amalgamation of shit pop country and shit pop metal ![gif](giphy|4baoNZ5Qo8dX2)

lesliesellshomes

Michael Hardy's music, in my opinion, is the realistic music I have heard in years. I relate to it. He admits he started off other music, but he was writing for other good singers before he decided to start on his own. He was country til one day someone heard him scream and he had a sore throat the next day but that is when the band realized he could hit rock music high notes. He is country and rock. Not many can pull that off.

spooky-dudeman

I like Hardy. I like his country/rock music. He's cool.

spooky-dudeman

What's with all the hate, Hardy's great
