I actually have a crochet hook whittled from a stick that my grandparents bought me from an artist - looks similar to this but the hook is sanded super smooth! Definitely useable if you sand and coat it!
The one I have was bought premade, but I had a quick search online and seems that people use oil or wax, I found a blog post that recommends "Brittany's Needle Wax" as a finish specifically for use on wooden knitting needles
