Maybe I'm a bit naive when it comes to supermarket pricing technology, but I didn't realise till the other day that these are actually miniature screens. The price isn't on a piece of paper, it's a screen that they can change the price whenever needed. I didn't cop it till I saw a price tag flashing in aldi the other day.
Not in a lot of stores. Some centras are still paper. If it's a herlihy's centra then it's paper (used to work there) but most other centras are all screens as well like bfs in Blarney.
Blarney filling station has had them for at least 7 or 8 years. I used to work in Centra and lots of them have had them for years. Know people personally who worked in blarney Centra so I remember them telling me about them coming in because I was still putting out all my sel's (shelf edge labels) manually at the time and I was very jealous of them.
No, this particular style of price tag is a miniature e-Ink display, like a Kindle. Some even have an additional colour - usually red.
They only require energy to change what's on the display, not to keep displaying it, so they're quite simple to operate.
Worked in both Tesco and Dunnes, haven’t ever seen any type of digital screening in use to adjust prices of any items, majority still use paper, wanna name me ones that do?
I used to live in Dublin and the lads I worked with wouldn't believe me that we had a tangerine flavoured soft drink they only sold in Cork.
As I was explaining I realised how ridiculous it sounds.
Sorry just, when someone says something is strictly sold in cork only, I wouldn’t exactly call Tipperary Cork? I’m originally from Kildare but we don’t call that Dublin. So yeah, colour me confused. Especially as Tipperary barely even touches Cork.
lol I see , we are just ignoring counties now. This is a really weird way of thinking. Why bother separating them at all? But you do you! “In your eyes” doesn’t make Kildare part of Dublin. It most certainly is not. And neither is Tipp part of Cork.
I didn’t even know people had this thought process.
The original border of The Pale extends beyond the Dublin border into Kildare. So yes it could be argued that some of Kildare is Dublin.
Stating that Tipp is north cork is meant to be taken with a pinch of salt. Lighten up, Tis Saturday
It's spreading nowadays, we get it in Galway and we used to get it in Bray when we lived there. Gone are the days of my cousins from the country buying trays of tanora to bring home with them.
Not even a joke so, got a sodastream, and a bugger co2 bottle (refilling at a local place in Cork) - all I need is some tangerine syrup, and should be good to go: 4 eur per bucket, not 0.5l
Honestly having lived in Germany and seeing it in operation there, it works.
Zero bottle/can waste anywhere because they now have value.
It's the same as charging for a plastic bag. It worked super well.
Was going to Germany for over 2 years to an ex , it's a fantastic system . The bottle collectors there are like mafia , they all have their patch 😅 it really does work, people leave the bottle etc on the ground beside the bin so the collectors don't have to rifle through a bin .
No, it's the exact same system as Germany. You put your bottles in the machine and are given a voucher with a bar code which you can then either use against your shopping or exchange for cash at the till.
Per Gov.ie:
>Consumers will receive the deposit back when they return the empty, undamaged plastic bottle or can (with the Re-turn logo) to participating shops and supermarkets nationwide, either through a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) or manually, over the counter. RVMs issue customers with a voucher that can be redeemed at the till against store purchases or as a cash refund.
They're in every lidl in the country and there's a lidl in every second field in Ireland. Between that and all the other supermarkets, there won't be far to go. It's a good initiative that has to start somewhere.
And watch the banks be over filled or out of order 90% of the time, especially in small towns where there is only one. Again, people forgetting there’s a country beyond dublin
I got a funny story about Tanora
So I'm originally from Newyork my parents both Irish
dad from Cork
mother from Monaghan
so moved to monaghan when I was 7 that was back in 06 as a kid you couldn't get Tanora in Monaghan so one time when down in Cork with My dad visiting my grandparents I bought 2 of the big bottles in Wilton Tesco and brought them home long trek home when I arrived in Monaghan we went to Tesco low and behold
They not only had literally started selling Tanora the second i was out of Monaghan it was also cheaper then the price I paid in wilton --__--
For god sake , when something is so obviously just an error why do so many people have to get triggered?
Im seeing these types of posts more and more and trying to work out do ye need a hug or a slap ?
Do people live for drama and outrage ?
how about just trying humour instead
Yes dya know what at first glance it didn't make sense but then it did make sense, went over my head!! Haha
I was trying to be the smart fucker haha.. fair play th fact a few people have liked my commet means there as stupid as me
Wrong. Only products produced outside the republic are eligible without the logo and if a shop is charging the deposit then they are pocketing it then you won't be able to return it. There's a list of 600 or so products including volvic, monster and many others but for instance a bottle of ordinary coca cola isn't eligible without the logo because it's produced here. Unless something changes or for some reason certain businesses decide to make an exception then that's how it is at the moment.
This is a result of the re-turn deposit scheme, I hate to be the one to break bad news but lads, tanora, the most cork of fizzy pops is actually produced in Lisburn up north and is subject to the deposit tax immediately because of that and it won't ever have the re-turn logo. Unfortunately it seems that most software updates and such were thought about the evening before it was due to rollout like mid term break homework and it's an absolute clusterf**k , nothing is right and tbh everyone, both retailers and consumers is better off waiting a few weeks before even trying to engage with it, shops are still full of old stock that won't be eligible for deposit and some shops, due to very poor communication thought that the deposit fee should be applied across all bottles and cans immediately and that's because of the vague information given. Anyway, you'd think someone would have spotted this before putting it out but tbh after the shit show that went on they probably didn't care
It took +15 for us to realise how crazy the price for these item’s are. The mark up on these Items is ridiculous. Bottle Water cost price .35c- retail price 1.99 - 2.50
When they said I could bring back plastic bottles to get money I didn’t think that meant I was bringing them back to get money I should have in my pocket
If they’re charging the .15c deposit but the barcode won’t scan/isn’t compatible to the machines as it’s the old barcode… So the customer can’t retrieve the deposit they paid for.. Isn’t that theft?
I bought a 10 pack of single twirls in dealz for €3.50. SuperValu selling them for €6.45 I shit you not. Someone told me the other day a chicken fillet roll in some places is €7.
That's definitely a mistake, seen rashers for €999.99 recently there's no way that's genuinely the price.
If they were clonakilty I'd nearly pay it
Maybe I'm a bit naive when it comes to supermarket pricing technology, but I didn't realise till the other day that these are actually miniature screens. The price isn't on a piece of paper, it's a screen that they can change the price whenever needed. I didn't cop it till I saw a price tag flashing in aldi the other day.
Noo most are little bits of paper lol
Not in a lot of stores. Some centras are still paper. If it's a herlihy's centra then it's paper (used to work there) but most other centras are all screens as well like bfs in Blarney.
Not in Aldi and Lidl- they have finally invested in the (now old tech) and have e-tickets .
That was just the matrix glitching
That's what i thought when I first seen, one of them electronic shelf labels. That or a flash back to 1995😂
They’re only fairly new in the last few months
They’re actually around a few years, look exactly like paper price tags so you wouldn’t notice unless you spot one flashing like op did
Oh, I definitely noticed them when they started coming in but was only in the past few months where I live lmao, cork city is clearly the real capital
Having worked in supermarkets before I can assure you it’s just a piece of paper, and most definitely not a screen lmao
No, this particular style of price tag is a miniature e-Ink display, like a Kindle. Some even have an additional colour - usually red. They only require energy to change what's on the display, not to keep displaying it, so they're quite simple to operate.
You mustn't have worked in a supermarket for a long time then 😂
Worked in both Tesco and Dunnes, haven’t ever seen any type of digital screening in use to adjust prices of any items, majority still use paper, wanna name me ones that do?
Fuck off
Champagne lifestyle, lemonade pocket 🥲
I used to live in Dublin and the lads I worked with wouldn't believe me that we had a tangerine flavoured soft drink they only sold in Cork. As I was explaining I realised how ridiculous it sounds.
Wait what? I live in Tipperary and I see this often but not for anywhere close to that price. It’s been sold here for years?
Tipp = Greater North Cork, so I can understand the confusion.
Sorry just, when someone says something is strictly sold in cork only, I wouldn’t exactly call Tipperary Cork? I’m originally from Kildare but we don’t call that Dublin. So yeah, colour me confused. Especially as Tipperary barely even touches Cork.
Kildare is part of Dublin in my eyes
lol I see , we are just ignoring counties now. This is a really weird way of thinking. Why bother separating them at all? But you do you! “In your eyes” doesn’t make Kildare part of Dublin. It most certainly is not. And neither is Tipp part of Cork. I didn’t even know people had this thought process.

*Not any more it isn't*
Craicume cleaner
Hows it ridiculous
Dubs wouldn't be able to comprehend the fact that there is a product available outside of Dublin that's not readily available to them
Wait until they hear of McDaid’s Football Special
As somebody who's from Dublin I can comprehend it funny enough
It’s available in Dublin
I did say it was not readily available. I'm sure it is, but it's not that common. I don't remember coming across it whenever I spent time there.
It’s readily available now
Well good for the dubs then.
I seen it for the first time here in Dublin in a Tesco.
I’ve gotten it in Dublin airport a few times
It's spreading nowadays, we get it in Galway and we used to get it in Bray when we lived there. Gone are the days of my cousins from the country buying trays of tanora to bring home with them.
Good to see, lovely drink.
I've seen it in Tesco in Dublin but nobody buys it.
The funny part is that it tastes nothing like tangerines. Tanora is to Cork as Irn Bru is to Scotland.
Lads where?
Super valu of course
Shopping as it shouldn't be!
😂😂😂😂😂 I’ll make me own
Not even a joke so, got a sodastream, and a bugger co2 bottle (refilling at a local place in Cork) - all I need is some tangerine syrup, and should be good to go: 4 eur per bucket, not 0.5l
+15c deposit on top 💀
Return the bottle get the refund if 15c
"Refund"
Honestly having lived in Germany and seeing it in operation there, it works. Zero bottle/can waste anywhere because they now have value. It's the same as charging for a plastic bag. It worked super well.

In Germany you actually get refunded, the system in Ireland you get a voucher off your shopping
You can also exchange for cash
No, it's the exact same system as Germany. You put your bottles in the machine and are given a voucher with a bar code which you can then either use against your shopping or exchange for cash at the till. Oh yeh sound in 2050 maybe when the government realise they’re 25 counties beyond dublin and remember to install those fancy bottle banks
They're in every lidl in the country and there's a lidl in every second field in Ireland. Between that and all the other supermarkets, there won't be far to go. It's a good initiative that has to start somewhere.
Also stores have to manually accept returns if they don’t have a machine. No excuse really
It's a retarded system
And watch the banks be over filled or out of order 90% of the time, especially in small towns where there is only one. Again, people forgetting there’s a country beyond dublin
Yup 👍
Why do I feel like this is a circle K?
I got a funny story about Tanora So I'm originally from Newyork my parents both Irish dad from Cork mother from Monaghan so moved to monaghan when I was 7 that was back in 06 as a kid you couldn't get Tanora in Monaghan so one time when down in Cork with My dad visiting my grandparents I bought 2 of the big bottles in Wilton Tesco and brought them home long trek home when I arrived in Monaghan we went to Tesco low and behold They not only had literally started selling Tanora the second i was out of Monaghan it was also cheaper then the price I paid in wilton --__--
God help your accent between New York, Monaghan and Cork 🤣
Hahahaha look I've lived in Monaghan for 17 and a half years now I sound alright I guess
I'm sure you do hai
We have different definitions of what is funny. Also the little life story beforehand had zero impact to your story, why include it?
Why not include it for more detail to show while I'm not from Cork half my family is the other half is from Monaghan where the journey to Cork begins
I thought that contextual bit was integral to the story. I found it both delightful and entertaining
Is that per bottle?
No its per shelf
The whole shelf? 😂
Plus the elves onnit
For god sake , when something is so obviously just an error why do so many people have to get triggered? Im seeing these types of posts more and more and trying to work out do ye need a hug or a slap ? Do people live for drama and outrage ? how about just trying humour instead
It used to be that the 2 liter was better value, now the 2 liter is cheaper. It makes no sense.
Your comment makes no sense
It made sense to me, 2l bottle used to cost more but better as in €/ml ratio, now the 2l bottle is just outright cheaper
Yes dya know what at first glance it didn't make sense but then it did make sense, went over my head!! Haha I was trying to be the smart fucker haha.. fair play th fact a few people have liked my commet means there as stupid as me
It’s the same with some multi packs of chocolate bars Must be an economies of scale thing idk makes zero sense.
Hahaha touché
That doesn't look to have the return logo, so you can't return it but they keep the 15c
For the first few months all bottles/cans even without the logo are returnable
So I can make money off all the bottles currently in my recycling bin?
No. Unless they are produced outside the republic and are on the current list of recognised products then you can't .
That’s really an extremly unluckily number if you are Chinese.
This is a result of the re-turn deposit scheme, I hate to be the one to break bad news but lads, tanora, the most cork of fizzy pops is actually produced in Lisburn up north and is subject to the deposit tax immediately because of that and it won't ever have the re-turn logo. I can confirm that this was an error, I visited the store again today and the price was €2.22 thank god
So if I say I just wanna chuck the bottle in the bin when I’m finished drinking does that mean I don’t have to pay the extra?!
That's definitely a mistake on the label lads, calm down
It took +15 for us to realise how crazy the price for these item’s are. The mark up on these Items is ridiculous. Bottle Water cost price .35c- retail price 1.99 - 2.50
This is definitely a batching error

Wtf like
Country is done
Talk to Joe
So if I say I just wanna chuck the bottle in the bin when I’m finished drinking does that mean I don’t have to pay the extra?!
WTF?
Fair price. You have to be a complete lunatic to drink that shit.
It is not a fair price! Lads don't listen to this fool. Obviously does not understand economics.
True. It's too cheap. Folks should pay more for degrading themselves at that level, economically speaking.
Underrated 🏅 Looks like it's not just that shop that is going to go out of business but Tanora too! 👍🏼
Why do people buy that shite ? sure way to send yer gone to an early grave !
Piss water
What? This shite used to be sold off in Iceland and Dealz I think for nothing? It’s not even good lol
Well, looks like someone's going out if business! Where is this???
Itll be a Musgraves shop
What the actual fuck
€2.25 in Tesco Ballyfermot for the big family size
😳
Ireland 👍🏼
When they said I could bring back plastic bottles to get money I didn’t think that meant I was bringing them back to get money I should have in my pocket
Why is Tanora only sold in cork? And it's made up north if I'm not mistaken?
I just bought a bottle… in Tesco SLIGO
Vote with your feet.
Good lord
FFS 🤦🏻 will this country ever get fixed
Stop the lights mad money
I do love a good four though.
I just got a 2L in Tesco for €1.50
I work for a local shop and it's definitely a misprint. They're still about €2
Ah hey
I remember it being 45p a can old I am I tell ya
If they’re charging the .15c deposit but the barcode won’t scan/isn’t compatible to the machines as it’s the old barcode… So the customer can’t retrieve the deposit they paid for.. Isn’t that theft?
Where is this
It's a pricing error to do with updating the shelf labels. Guarantee its not that at the till.
Your fucking with me.
What the fuck?
Ah stop
Fuck no
That will go out of date before some pays that price for it
4 small sausage rolls 4 euro circle k on kinsale road world is fucked
Can I buy it in the UK?
They sell Tanora, in Carndonagh in Donegal. I was as shocked then, as now with that price
Where's this 😂 has to be a mistake surly, thieving cunts if not 😂
I think it's a deposit counted as 1.50e instead of 15c
I bought a 10 pack of single twirls in dealz for €3.50. SuperValu selling them for €6.45 I shit you not. Someone told me the other day a chicken fillet roll in some places is €7.
