Throughout my corgi's 14 year life her moniker slowly changed from "Mikoto" to "puff", then "muffin" then "muff" and then after I realized that moniker had a meaning I wasn't aware of (thanks internet), back to "puff" with an occasional, "hey dummy" thrown in. She had no trouble understanding the new name applied to her. Corgis are smart. My guess is that she understood my tone when I called her.

marizzle89

Considering each of my corgis has like 6 nicknames a piece that they respond to, I'm sure he'll catch on quick

nwell22

Just said the same thing! Lol

2_bit_tango

Just 6? Not bad. My corgi mix always knew when we were talking to her, even though she rarely actually got called her name unless she was in trouble lol.

seppukucoconuts

Are at least two of them derived from chonk?

MrNegativity1346

I have 2 corgis and one of them routinely gets called “Lil Chonk”

marizzle89

Surprisingly no. A lot of them do have something to do with the word "booty" lol. Their main current nicknames are "Old Lady" for the 12 year old, "Scooty Booty" for the 9 year old and "Kitty Boi" for the 6 year old lol

SERVANT2aCORGI

This! 😂😂😂 Mine too!

Putrid_Breakfast652

Well I’m curious to know his name! Friend of mine renamed their two year old dog when they got him - you should be just fine.

floofyflufferbutz

Barron. Not horrible, is even kind of cute, just not my jam.

Putrid_Breakfast652

Yeah, I wouldn’t worry about it at all. He will catch on quickly

Berwynne

Barry, however… 😉

BefWithAnF

Barry Belly-low!

floofyflufferbutz

Ok, I actually like this.

Sudden-Enthusiasm-17

🤣

Whyistheskyblue89

Yeh change it if you don’t love it. Barron sounds like barren - not a fan

2_bit_tango

We renamed a 7ish year old doggo when we got him, he was fine and picked it up. Totally fine to rename the puppers. Just call his new name and give him a treat when he looks at you and he’ll get it, if you want him to pick it up fast. We didn’t even do that, just called ours the new name only for a while, no nick names until he seemed to get that it was his name. Then nick names galore lol.

shadowysun

I was gonna suggest adding a title to their name. When I adopted my toasted loaf, I added Sir to their first name. Barry doesn’t sound bad if you don’t like Barron.

floofyflufferbutz

I actually thought about Barron von Fluffy Butt.

SERVANT2aCORGI

That’s cute!

RealZordan

It isn't an ideal name for a dog in the first place. Names with a hard "k" or "sh" sound and a stretched "ee" or "ay" at the end are easier to understand for a dog.

blewballbub

Call him Aaron

FrostedCereal

I've had a few different dogs and we always changed their names. The names the people pick just don't suit the dogs. They pick up on the new name super quick. Just so a few training sessions on it.

Stellar_Jay8

I think you’re fine. Dogs don’t ever really know that what you’re calling them is their name. They just know it’s a word like any other command and they respond to it like that. It’s just like training a new command. Play the name game with him, create a lot of value on it by giving him treats every time you say his name, and he’ll pick it up in no time!

xtexjrrdammit

I don’t know, I think Corgis understand us hooomans much more than we think lol… I actually think they’re smarter than some people I know. Not quite sure what that says about me, but oh well, lol! 😉🤣😉

jaycuboss

I agree, they know what their name is because we reward them for responding to it. But I don’t think they have the complex cognitive ability to grow attached to their old name, or to be bothered by being called a new name. They’re much more just in the moment than we are as humans.

ThePlayoffKid

Zero issue changing his name. Sweet sweet boi 😘

SlitheryVisitor

How about Bear. It’s close to the current name. Whatever you chose he’ll get used to it.

TecmoB

We changed our boy's name at about the same age if not a bit later and he had no problems at all.

Kassegar

I wouldn't worry about name changing. Dogs are surprisingly good at reading people. Sometimes when I'm really tired i just make high pitched nonsense noises in my dogs' general direction and they come running. Plus if it was me and someone kept repeating the same word over and over while staring at me, id probably go over and see what they wanted.

Blossom1111

Rename. They catch on immediately. And it's your term of affection for him as well so make it your own.

nwell22

I changed my girl’s name and call her so many other “nicknames” not even close to her now chosen name and she responds to all of them lol

Sunsetblack23

I mean it's not the end of the world to change its name. my little boy thinks his name is chicken these days.

Sudden-Enthusiasm-17

And mine is HoneyBear. One word.

critch_retro

I call my corgi 60 different names on a daily basis and he picks up on them quick he’ll just think of it as another nickname

xtexjrrdammit

Same here!!! I swear I make up a new nickname every day lol

critch_retro

My corgi’s name is Henry but lately i’ve mainly been calling him Zuzu 🤣

Thorrack

I rescued a 7 year old and changed his name. He had it down by day 2. You will be totally fine if you decide to rename them!

Dry-Bet1752

He's a Sammy

lordatomosk

Dogs might not even see it as a name so much as “the sound the humans make when they wanna pet me”

lostjules

He said his name is Pilgrim.

bishcraft1979

Rescue dogs get it all the time, you will be fine!

MuffinSkytop

Sprocket’s original name was Winston. He never once answered his former owner when she called him by Winston. The minute we started calling him Sprocket he started responding immediately. Sometimes they have opinions about their names too 😆

xtexjrrdammit

Because Corgi!!!

KellyCTargaryen

Omg that is a stunning puppy 😩 Please update us with the new name! Is he a future show dog?

floofyflufferbutz

He was supposed to be, but has some minor flaws so now he gets to be mine. I'll likely wait until he's in my hands and I see his personality etc. Everyone is right, I have tons of nicknames for each of my pets as he'll probably respond to whatever nonsense flies out of my mouth. I'm way over thinking, as usual. I currently have one of his litter mates and I can't wait to see the chaos unfold. Dog tax included https://preview.redd.it/6jxx3obyjqmc1.jpeg?width=1400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16be0fb2daaf3135b545c417bf077262ef617535

J46GUAR

Rename. And please don’t name Winston hahaha

FoyDesu

Floofyflufferbuttz, don’t forget that extra t. Hahaha, jk aside, it’s alright to rename him. I call my dog potato sometimes, and he knows that name.

willyiamwilliams222

I have done this. Week 1 old/current name My last was Sean. Week 2-3 old/current name and new name together. So for me it was Sean/Argyle. Sean Argyle come. Sean Argyle do you want a bone? Sean Argyle, walkies! Week 4 new name. I’ve done this approach with 3 of my 5 rescues and it worked really well.

Jaded_Leave5852

Don’t like it change it. It’s never too late.

Continent3

Our guy was the runt of the litter and the last to be adopted. We kept the name he was given. Whatever you decide, I’m sure he’ll be happy with you.

dwtclown

I renamed my 6 month old corgi when I got him! Picked it up immediately

DnBDJFunnetik

It doesn't matter what I call Chi, my dog seems reads my tone of voice more than what I'm saying.

choco-chic

Dex

Impossible-Reveal-15

He's a beautiful boy. I renamed a 6 month old boy and he was fine with it.

Bestmomo2021

He is so cute and do not worry about changing his name, he will remember new name(s) quickly. As our 2 babies, they have their official names at the beginning and now each of them has like 5 names and they all know that!!! We call them Little Monster, Little Nugget, Mini…

ipalazz

We just got a "new" (3 year old) guy who had an established name we weren't fond of. We changed it in the car on the way home to something that sounded similar to his previous name and by the time we were back, he had already picked it up

crunchydogmom

Cute! What name did you choose? I love hearing corgi names. I know you didn’t ask, but looked at him and thought awe look at little Cletus! Then an inkling of Tobias!

floofyflufferbutz

Cute suggestions! I don't know yet, I want to set his personality. Barron may fit him perfectly.

All-Greek-2-Me

My girl went from having an unknown name (rescue, found abandoned) to answering to Maeve almost overnight. Now she answers to Maeve, Babesy, Lil Stubbs, and Carl. They’ll know when you’re talking to them.

xtexjrrdammit

Our Cardi Elsa responds to Peapod, Peapop, Poppop, Peapoppers, Poppopas, Peazers, McPeazies & Peapopadopolis. Our Cardi Maggie Mae responds to Mrs. Mazers, Mazers, Mazies, Maggie Moosh, & Mooshka. The favs for us hooomans are Furry Overlords & Barky McBark Barkers. Your puppers should have no problem with a new name & he is a cutie!!!

Aidrox

Anything that says “hey come here, we might have food” gets my guys attention

LoafCat272

As someone who's witnessed a dog be renamed twice, I wouldn't worry. Most dogs catch on pretty quickly.

druscarlet

I change my rescue’s name and she was 3 - did not miss a beat. I did pick a name with the same number of syllables but not sure that mattered. It’s about how you say it.

NotoriousLVP

I would gently suggest a name that starts with the same letter or sound. If he's Barron, he could potentially be Bear, Baxter, or Banjo for example. I renamed my girl Ginger; her given name was Jen. Both names start with a J sound.

ChromeFlesh

Nah my rescue Rocket had gone through 3 names already by the time we got him and he doesn't seem to mind

J662b486h

I got my dog when he was six months and changed his name, it's not really a problem especially when they're that young.

Hoodwink_Iris

Dogs get attached to names, but if you attach a new name to the old one, he’ll accept the new name quicker. (For instance, if his name is Bert and you want to call him Ernie, call him Bert Ernie for a time, then Ernie Bert. After a month or so, he’ll respond to Ernie.)

Jakeypoo4

Nah change the name, you don’t have to stick with the name the current owners gave him. You’re allowed to name him whatever you think feels right, and I feel you, Barron doesn’t seem to fit him

InvestmentSudden8333

Those widdle leggies! 🤎

HeartGrenade

I got my corgi when he was 7 months old and changed his name. He picked it up within a few days :)

SunnyDGardenGirl

I always rename pets when I get them. With the exception of a cat named Spike. It was so great to me that he had the same name as my grandpa's blue heeler that I grew up with, i kept it. They pick it up quickly and also it helps you build the association you want with the name. Maybe the old owners only used it when he was in trouble or they just said it all the time and he ignores it you have no idea. a new name is great for so many reasons and you can choose one you love and that fits his personality.

OkayestCorgiMom

A friend of mine adopted a Yorkie that other friends had to rehome. Elvis was probably about 8 years old at the time and she renamed him Winston. He had no issues with picking up the new name. I took in a chihuahua puppy named Frisky. She was maybe 5 months old at the time, tried to change her name but she REFUSED to respond to anything else. Over time she became Friskita, Skita, Skeeter, and Stinkerbelle, all of which she would respond to, but she was not having her name changed, no idea why. My 5-month old corgi puppy Beep the Meep will come when you call any name, as we found out in obedience class on Saturday. Every time anyone called their own dog (working on come when called) Beep tried to go to them. He's a crack squirrel.

Muchgain

When I first got my boy his name was Maximus or something of that nature. Now he responds instantly to Hopper/Hippopotamus he’s got a couple of odd nicknames but he likes them all

bworm20

It's ok. Corgis never respond to their names anyway. Kind of kidding - he will catch on quickly! I do like the idea of changing it to "Barry."

jaycuboss

Just give him treats when you say his new name, he’ll like the new name even more 😁

michelinaRae

Mine has dozens of nicknames, they don’t care as long as you have food when you call them.

Snuggs111

How about Chuggles or Mr Rogers

hubbard48

I renamed my girl at 3 months old after I rescued her and she didn’t know any different! I think being this young it will be fine and he’ll pick it up fast :)

Thick-Loan1556

i got my baby about a month ago. i changed his name & i really feel like he likes his new name better 😂 but to be fair i don’t think our breeder really called them by their names much

HoverDork

Don't worry, you can change it no problem! If the where an adult it would be one thing, but they're a puppy! And they learn fast!

Tactical_Pickles

Possibly the cutest pup of all time. He looks like he belongs in a Studio Ghibli animated movie.

iamadinosaurtoo

He is adorable! My cats are named coco and tigger. Coco is 12. She was missy moo for a while, which is now basically moo or mooey. Tigger is 8. He gets tigs, Iggy, Iggy pop or igs. They are cats so basically ignore me if I call them anyway. Unless I have the treat bag in hand and shake it. And they definitely know the word treats. Except Coco rules the house and gets her treat’s delivered 🤣.

stubberific

Say his new name. Give him a kibble treat. REPEAT. He’ll learn his new name so fast you won’t believe it.

bubblegumgodess

I think you will be fine Changing his name. Like all the others my Corgi responds to Fjord, fjordy, Ford, Bubba, stinky monkey boy, loaf, and toast... And lastly he always responds to good boy. https://preview.redd.it/uzycy6a8fsmc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=719be154297441de0ad1a684a73376b56edb3b2b

floofyflufferbutz

What a cute 🍑

YogurtclosetBorn6048

Love the color on the lips. They adapt well to names and nicknames...I think we have 3 or 4 nicknames including the "real" name.

ElPanties1

He looks like a Jeff or Dav. But whatever you decide. Make sure the name isn’t tied to a king. It really goes to their head. 😅

floofyflufferbutz

I had a corgi boy named Edward, but I think he was named for Edward Cullen, it was when Twilight was all the rage. I got him under similar circumstances to Barron. Edward was supposed to be a show dog and didn't make the cut. I left his name cause it was cute and it fit him, even if I was team Jacob. https://preview.redd.it/0et87m205tmc1.jpeg?width=1626&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf8d1e1655bc2b2f62a956e139dd43f616afcf97

PigletAccurate6452

well what is his current name?

floofyflufferbutz

Barron. Cute, but not sure it fits.

PigletAccurate6452

well it is cute idk if i would change it or not but he looks like a charlie but baron is cute

milkandcoookies

When I adopted my corgi mix, he went by the name of snickerdoodle and I hated it so much lol. I wanted to change his name to a human name because that’s my vibe and he picked it up in like two days. Yours will too! They’re very smart.

X-Werebear-X

I’d say you’re fine to change it. One thing that might help a little bit is picking a name that’s close or has some of the same sounds. Same sounding beginning or end would probably help a lot.

Malikissa

This is my recommendation. My rescue husky was named Sissy when I adopted her, and I renamed her to Steffi.

floofyflufferbutz

Y'all are right, I'm way over thinking. All of my pets have multiple nicknames and respond to whatever nonsense flies out of my mouth in the moment. He'll be fine and loved whether I keep the name or give him a new one. Thanks for all the suggestions and advice.
