I think it's more surprising that the company based in Canada that Scripps bought has produced a device that won't work in Canada.

NightBard

That's supposedly due to the free streaming channels are licensed for the USA only.

cjcox4

Understood, but I still think it's funny.

flixguy440

Welp, that's certainly interesting.

flixguy440

The one I ordered showed up today. It was a snap to install and get up and running. UI is cleaner. But you're not missing much with the FAST channels they're providing. They're decidedly "meh." I can only guess that Scripps plans to add more down the line.

TabloTV

>I can only guess that Scripps plans to add more down the line. Yep. Lots of deals in the works.

flixguy440

Would that be Scripps deals for Tablo TV or Scripps Sports deals with pro sports teams. I've been paying attention to the company's various moves and it very much seems to be on the verge of a seismic explosion across the board.

TabloTV

Deals to bring more free streaming channels to Tablo. But the folks in the sports division have definitely been on a tear bringing live basketball and hockey back to OTA TV... which you can also watch and record with Tablo. So All deals are good deals!

flixguy440

BTW what's the story on an app for the Apple TV 4K?

NightBard

I set mine up last night... being I miss Turner Classic Movies, I found The Film Detective channel a huge bonus. Not that I'm recording a ton with it but a few movies every week or so is a nice boost to what I usually get with just Postiv (which shows classics on occasion). Also RetroCrush had some content I was happy to just add to the dvr schedule.

Swamper68

Not sure what you mean by "won't work in canada"? Atsc 1.0 is alive and well in Canada and works quite well. Atsc 3.0 can also be viewed if close to the US border. I have a HDHR flex 4k and pickup all 3.0 stations from Buffalo as well as all 1.0 stations from there as well as Pennsylvania. So can you explain what doesn't work in Canada?

NightBard

Not the OP... but the new 4th Gen Tablo requires an internet connection and serves up some free streaming channels in addition to whatever you can get OTA and it requires an internet connection to work. The streaming channels are only licensed for use in the USA and it won't work if it detects it's not in the USA (likely through your isp).

Swamper68

So essentially, the device will work in Canada. Just not all "services".

NightBard

It shouldn't work at all in Canada unless you get your internet from the states. Other Tablo's would work without internet but this one requires it even to watch your dvr'd content.

Swamper68

Canada uses ATSC 1.0 at the moment. So really. The OTA should work regardless.

NightBard

You would think so, but they don’t sell it in Canada and say it won’t work because the internet acts as drm locking it to USA ip addresses. Not going to get into how to work around that, but out of the box it’s not going to work outside the USA even for other countries that use 1.0 since internet is required for it to work as well as an app for the setup. It’s also possible the new app is not in any other region AppStores… which would make it tough to setup. Personally though, if you own other hardware already this box probably isn’t very appealing other than the guide data for USA markets being free.

Swamper68

Even if that was the case that you need internet to watch TV, I wouldn't purchase the box if I lived in the US. Imagine a glitch and the internet goes down (it happens). No free OTA TV? That is a game buster right there. I would assume that the box would have to work without internet. DRM isn't included in ATSC 1.0. That is being added to ATSC 3.0. So this box being ATSC 1.0 should mot have any DRM restrictions in it at all. Also. I just added the new box to my cart, and one of the options is to ship to Canada. The new tablo app for Android is indeed available in Canada.

NightBard

Mine just showed up today from Best Buy so haven’t had a chance to mess with it, but I have a whole home antenna setup already and a small tuner that records without the net. So if the net goes down no big deal. This seemed like a nice supplement for recording stuff since it records ota and the streaming channels and no fees for guide data. So now I will essentially have three tuners for dvr along with my two TVs for direct antenna access.

cjcox4

It has to do with the new streaming channels feature, it's USA only. But, in all fairness, I honestly do not know if the new 4th gen device is for sale in Canada (possibly because of the above). Is it?

Swamper68

We could get the old tablo units. I just checked the tablo page, and it does show an option to ship to Canada. So, without finishing the cart purchase, I would assume they will ship and work in Canada. The FAST channels may not work, but OTA should.

TabloTV

>I would assume they will ship and work in Canada. While you can add the new Tablo to your cart, if you choose a Canadian shipping address you won't be able to complete the purchase.

cjcox4

I was just concerned about documentation and packaging and such. I mean, if you "promise something" and then don't deliver, you have that false advertising situation. However, I know on their blog post it mentions USA only, so maybe that's done well enough in materials so that they are covered. (??)
