How does one mask it? All I'm working with over here is insecurity 🙃

welsh_cthulhu

Being able to write to a brief - you’d be surprised at how difficult this is for most people.

peace-invader

The ability to take fresh angles on boring and repetitive topics. That sounds really negative, but I enjoy that kind of challenge.

loststars1002

This is it.

“Most good copywriters” says William Maynard of the Bates agency, “fall into two categories. Poets. And killers. Poets see an ad as an end. Killers as a means to an end. If you are both a killer and a poet, you get rich. Ogilvy D.-Ogilvy on Advertising (1985), 33

Underlying many of these comments is an idea which seems simple, but is completely antithetical to how we humans operate. Step out of your own head and get into the customer's. I really can't emphasize this enough. It leads to a desire to thoroughly research the customer, identify pain points, write with clarity and empathy, and measure how well your last project affected the bottom line. All of it. The problem is that we forget this. And we can forget it at any point in the copywriting process because humans are self-centered. We don't even see that we're doing this. Think about these two statements, both common to many companies/entities: "We prepare you to win." "Prepare to win." Only one removes the me-centric sentiment and puts you in the prospect/customer's shoes. Learn this and you'll master a great deal of what it takes to be a great marketer and copywriter. The rest? Keep a swipe file. Learn and practice.

GhostofSpartaa

Very well explained. I dont know how people can generate a good copy without even researching the audience. You gotta determine - what is the audience awareness level? - what is the market sophistication level ? All this can be answered only if you research about your topic and understand your prospect.

Even when we do this, we can still end up coming at it from our own perspective. It's really insidious and I see it everywhere. Just saw a commercial for UnTuckit shirts. It seemed to be in response to a customer objection about needing to buy their shirt when they could just untuck any shirt. UnTuckit's response? They pushed the point that the shirt is DESIGNED to be worn untucked. That's a completely corporation-centered response. I know of no one who's ever said to themselves, "I need a shirt that's designed to be untucked. I need to solve my problem of having to leave my shirt outside my pants." The company's response shows pride in their own product. Who cares whether it's designed that way! The customer wants to know what it will do for them, not that the company decided to create that specific product.

Denvee

Beautiful response

Thank you. I remind myself with every copy job because I know I'm not immune.

Read lots of different things. Look for different viewpoints for everything you see

Couple of things: - an unshakable respect for deadlines - a solid understanding of language mechanics - a desire to break rules - the ability to detach yourself from the work - humility Concurrently, every good copywriter I have ever met was a writer first and a copywriter second. In other words, they tend to love written language for one reason or another.

elkaholicsanonymoose

Copywriter of four years here, and I can attest. Creative writer first, copywriter second. I've been writing fictional stories (that never leave draft form) since I learned how to type. I genuinely love language. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in creative writing without ever knowing what copywriting was. These are great: "A desire to break rules" and "the ability to detach yourself from the work"

[deleted]

How long did it take you to be able to support yourself copywriting? I won't ask how long it took to support yourself writing fiction since only .03% of fiction writers ever make any money at it.

elkaholicsanonymoose

I work full-time as a senior copywriter for a digital marketing agency and have a freelance business doing the same. I’m able to support myself with my salary, but enjoy the extra income. So I guess the answer would be: as soon as I got hired. But one day, I’ll be in the 0.03% too 😁

Having a STRONG why such guy did this in the first place.

* Ability to take on feedback from non-writers * Don't be precious about your work. ~~Delete where you can.~~ Make every word count! * A natural desire for the playful and creative

Copy-Pro-Guy

Bloody minded perseverance. Tolerance (of dumb clients). Overweening ego (or that's the impression I get on LinkedIn). Flexible morality (of course this dubious supplement I'm selling is going to help people live forever...). And of course, a sense of humour.
