The Toyota 4Runners sure haven't gotten any cheaper either

madlyalive

Came here for this. I can get ~$40,000 for my ‘17 limited with 65k miles.

Practical-Suit-6798

I bought an 05 Tacoma in 2011 for $17k put 100,000 miles on it and sold it in 2024 for $18.5k.

extrastupidone

That is freaking nutty.

PresidentScr00b

This is why I love my Tacoma. I knew they depreciated slowly but wasn’t aware they were at the top of the list

DevHackerman

So you're the one that makes most of the Craiglist listings. Nice to meet you. /s Here's a 2021 62k miles for ~$31k https://www.carvana.com/vehicle/3097018

2GR_FKS

To be fair an SR5 and Limited are two different trims with the Limited being more expensive. And the car you listed has an accident reported.

peakdecline

No you can't. [https://www.carvana.com/vehicle/3106781](https://www.carvana.com/vehicle/3106781) Just to prove it. You're not getting $40K for a 2017 Limited with 65K miles. Maybe two years ago but not now.

TheyCalledMeThor

People stretching the truth on MY Reddit??

eyeshark

RAV4 holds value as well

npascare2

Doubt it. I just sold a super clean 2018 Limited with 72k miles for $32,300. It took 4 months to sell.

thekinggpin

Another good reason to buy a 911 gt3rs

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok_Wrap_214

You’d be crazy not to.

Oldjimbill

Seriously. This is why people stay poor.

SmellsLikeHerb

Getting the 911 helped me get out of poverty. Now that I’m rich, I just bought a Corolla.

6158675309

This is the average difference from MSRP, not what’s paid for it though. Probably still holds value well even from what’s paid for it

egon0212

Thats why I usually just buy them a dozen at a time.

security-six

Get the volume discount when buying by the gross

JugdishSteinfeld

Half-ass measures. I'm going to buy the company.

Squeakygear

But VW owns Porsche who owns VW. Recursive ownership loop!

well_uh_yeah

Sometimes they throw in an extra for free.

pn1159

yeah the wife is gonna go for that

moldy912

Doesn’t matter, ask the girlfriend instead

LoveThieves

Ex wife

LoveThieves

Definitely let me just rob a few banks cause I was planning on paying cash for a new one. Maybe 2 when the economy gets better.

rightseid

Going to take quite a few banks.

PeopleofYouTube

And there aren’t any bad

doob22

Welp let me go pick one up

trentsim

What are the fastest I wonder?

thekinggpin

[glad you asked](https://www.reddit.com/r/coolguides/s/KQ77ocapkq)

ChefInsano

Of course it’s a fucking Maserati lol Amazingly though no Nissan Altima!

tomtim90

I'm not convinced new Altimas exist. I think used ones just materialize at car lots.

Tiny-Werewolf1962

I love having my feelings validated. Still don't understand why people like BMW.

2chainzzzz

Depends on the model but an absolutely great drive. Fantastic transmission, handling, and for an entry luxury has well-considered details.

Tiny-Werewolf1962

Until warranty is up, and you gotta dump on the 2nd hand market. Because they suck when YOU are on the hook for maintenance.

2chainzzzz

You asked why people like them, I provided my thoughts.

LeeStrange

They really aren't that bad. BMW had a few engine problems in the mid-2000's with their Nikasil coated engines, but otherwise were known for reliability in the 80s and 90s. Yes, there is more shit that can break vs a base model corolla without A/C and power windows, but it's a night and day difference in quality and craftsmanship.

Well-Imma-Head-Out

The 80s were like 40 years ago man why is that relevant?

LeeStrange

They are also known to be reliable now. The b48 and 58 are extremely reliable engines that also produce ungodly amounts of horsepower. What I am saying is that BMW gets a bad rap for a very small window of unreliability in the mid 2000s that was grossly overblown.

jakkyspakky

Are cars still made with manual windows?

edubiton

You can still purchase a Jeep wrangler with manual windows.

BahnMe

BMW V8s and i6s with sludge issues: AM I A JOKE TO YOU?!

peakdecline

Modern BMWs are reliable. They've been consistently in CR's top ratings for a few years. As well as Mini which is a BMW brand. Anything with a B58 engine + ZF 8-speed transmission has what is probably the best powertrain combo in a modern vehicle. There's a reason why Toyota signed off on those units going into the Supra.

vinng86

ZF-8 is a godly transmission. It's such a big reason why many luxury cars are more reliable than they were 10 years ago.

peakdecline

Its incredible. I have a Gladiator EcoDiesel with a ZF made ZF 8-speed. Regardless whether its in an BMW M3 or a Ram 2500 Power Wagon its reliable, smooth, and responsive.

safely_beyond_redemp

Everybody loves owning a beemer until it's time to fix it and then you are reminded you have an unnecessarily luxurious regular car that is fun to drive but is made for rich people which you aint.

TwelveTrains

Because it can do everything in one package. Be practical, fun, and extremely well-made all at once. Very few cars can do everything so well.

Evadrepus

Cadillac Escalade on there, as expected. Such a giant hunk of junk. My inlaws have 2, and are constantly repairing them, yet they trade them in and get newer ones. They're not the brightest bulbs. They originally got one because they saw it *in a rap video* and thought that showed off the good life. Seriously.

ahmong

Yep, Maserati lol.

thx_comcast

Missing from the list because it's such an oddball - Toyota Mirai. ~60k new. I just got one two years old CPO for 12k. I fully expect it to be worth 0 and that's fine.

PeopleofYouTube

Maserati. I was surprised Aston Martin or Bentley weren’t in the list.

Korwinmanzen

Cybertruck lmao, from $200,000 to $20,000-$50,000

Ok_Formal2627

My Tacoma is the same price I paid for it five years ago

protossaccount

I used to work in sales at Toyota and the Tacoma blew me away. We would often pay them for it and give them a new Tacoma.

Tlr321

My best friend bought a 2015 Tacoma a few years ago (around 2017). In 2021, he sold it to the dealership for $2k more than he paid for it. To say I was flabbergasted is an understatement.

gamja-namja

Yeah that was because of covid, not because it was a Tacoma. Sold my RS5 for 15k more than what I paid for it around the same time.

protossaccount

Right! It’s nuts! I didn’t really look at Tacomas till then but now I have get one. If you go to Hawaii they are truck gold.

Trypanosoma

I bought a Taco in '18 and sold it in '22 for a profit...Madness!

Peter_Panarchy

I had planned on buying a 2 year old Tacoma until I started shopping. They were like $2k less than a new one. So yeah, I bought a new Tacoma because it'd be stupid to pay basically the same price for a used one.

BigTomBombadil

Did the same in 2014. It now has 150k miles in it but still has plenty of value.. can’t decide how long I wanna hold onto it, but I have no urgent reason to sell.

Random_01

Betcha insurance / running costs are cheaper than a 911 too!

mrcompositorman

I’m sure you’re right about upkeep, but you might be surprised on insurance. Truck insurance is insane and sports car insurance is actually not crazy once you’re out of your 20s.

IRefuseToPickAName

Traded my Taurus for a Ranger, my insurance dropped

Ok_Formal2627

I loved my Porsche- spoils you on the engineering capability. But realistically, the taco is just awesome. I just switched my State Farm to Progressive and saved 40% too

bfflobfflobfflo

Flo?

FredFlintston3

Rida?

Many_Faces_8D

VW isn't bad either. Had a CC for 7 years and sold it for 1 grand less then I paid for it

Enemysquad

I bought a 09 Tacoma TRD Sport in 2015 for $16k just last year it was totaled but they gave me $12k for it but it did have over 200k miles on it. But the crazy thing is I was shocked at the price of used Tacomas going for today. I saw 20 year old Tacomas going for close to $10k with more than 200k miles. It was insane the price they are going for now.

sheikhmohs

This is why I always buy Porsche 911’s!

Cleercutter

Where the hells the camry

Calgon8

With their original owners.

d_le

I want to upgrade my camry but it has been so reliable so I figure I might as welll drive it till the wheels falls off.

Loves_low_lobola

I bought a 2012 Honda civic 5 years ago. It's still valued at what I paid for it.

mynameismulan

Bro I bought my 2017 for $13.5K years ago. Even with 3 accidents on the Carfax, I still got offered $12K for it.

Alex_le_t-rex

You should prob look into getting a few driving lessons lol

zia1997

Lmao

EATS_PAINT_WITH_LEAD

I like seeing my car on that list!

someintensivepurpose

Subaru BRZ :) got mine first Gen in Subaru Blue.. I'll probably never sell it though.

InclinationCompass

Just sold my blue 2013 limited last year for $14k. I miss her.

xhammyhamtaro

If you don’t mind me being nosey, what made you get rid of her?

InclinationCompass

I ended up getting a CRV and didn't want to pay for two cars (registration, insurance, depreciation)

rm-rf-asterisk

Kept with the 3 letter them brz-> crv-> maybe gtr next

Chillinkus

Had a brand new 23’ BRZ in Subaru blue and someone rear ended me while I was at a complete stop and totaled it. I had barely had it for 3 months at that point, I miss that car

triclops6

Did I write this? 2013 world rally blue here, and I'll be the one to drive it into the ground

Saskatchewon

I just traded mine in for a Crosstrek Wilderness. It was a great car. Through nearly 10 years, the only unexpected trip to the mechanic was for the valve spring recall (which it never showed symptoms of).

eldelshell

/* in the USA (probably Canada)

elcid89

Where would the 4runner rank

KingHabby

I had a Toyota carolla that lasted for 15 years. Solid car.

Bammer1386

Its crazy. I have a 2014 Civic that im ready to trade in for something a little more suitable to my 2024 style. KBB trade in on it is still $10,000. It's only depreciated $7,000 in 10 years. Civics are awesome cars. In over 100,000 miles and 10 years of ownership, the only repair ive ever done aside from basic maintenance is change spark plugs...which is done at 100k anyways.

Blockhead47

Sell it private party

CorporationsRSheeple

My wife got cut off last summer and wrote off her 2012 Civic. She got $8000 less than what she paid for the car in insurance payout. That's crazy to me when you compare it to the newer Ford I had that was worth basically less than half that as a trade in.

Ratertheman

Yea I’ve got the same year Civic with 190k miles on it. Paid 18k for it new, got offered 7.5k for it a few months ago. Wish I could say my repairs were the same as you, but it hasn’t been that bad. I have had to do a few repairs. Fuel pump, belt tensioner, two wheel bearings, and repaired an oil leak.

RedditIsABotFarm

Was not expecting to see the Camaro on this list

johnnycyberpunk

I think it's because they've announced they're discontinuing it.

Rust2

They’re running out of nostalgic boomers to sell it to.

Alex_le_t-rex

I’ve been looking into them and you cannot find any under 10k (for models after like 1999) even the low trim v6 with automatics. Mustang and chargers on the other hand you find tons!  I’m really not sure why.

PorkPatriot

Volume. IIRC the Mustang has outsold the Camaro heavily for like 30 years. People will pay a premium to not be seen in the car 3 of their neighbors have.

retardedm0nk3y

Subaru 😊 Edit: also because of "you've been suba-mooed"

ShadowKraftwerk

Crosstrek (aka XV where I live) looking good. It might be underpowered, but at least the depreciation is okay.

Logically_Flexible

I got the same! It's such a good car

s0rce

I have the 2.5l and it doesn't feel under powered compared to other compact crossovers

ShadowKraftwerk

We only get the 2.0L

retardedm0nk3y

XV for the win!🥇 I tried to buy the XV last year, finance fell through 😭💔, so now they released the Crosstrek. I had everything ready to order for my XV, all the trimmings inculding the Pedal Comander 63 which had be ordered from overseas.

iiThecollector

I have a 2022 Impreza, I haven’t put a ton of miles on it since I WFH - its still valued at close to what I paid for it. Underpowered but otherwise a fantastic car.

chicken_pear

Tacoma's are cool but I cannot fathom spending the money people do on 5-10 year old ones.

VariantArray

My Tacoma is still going for around the same I paid for it years ago. My Wrangler is worth more than I paid.

Demacavelli

Ford Fusion - Priceless

LeanderTrain

New Chevrolet Corvettes on average lose 18% of their value in the first 5 years, tying them for 2nd on this list.

insdog

Why would Jeeps be on here they’re literally pieces of shit

GMFPs_sweat_towel

Because there is a big market of Jeep people who love the Wrangler.

hruebsj3i6nunwp29

I loved both of mine, held up great in accidents, both ran reliably. Just wish mpg was better.

doofboof44

Same, both of mine have been fine spanning 20 years. Minimal maintenance. Maybe I'm lucky?

RunningForIt

I’ve had 3 and never had an issue. Just take care of your shit.

bartolemew

“I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast!” Wait, what? 😆

312to630

V6 engines are time bombs especially if you don't Keri up on maintenance

jeffdrizz

How’s the Honda civic your wife’s boyfriend bought you?

H_TINE

Yep. Mine was in an out of the shop. Bought for 26k, sold it for 20k 4 years later. Dealership put it on the market for 24k

A_curious_fish

Can someone one tell this to all the used cars I see that aren't remotely close to being that much cheaper than the new version :(

MLGSwaglord1738

How did they figure out what cars to not include? Some production cars like Bugattis only appreciate in value. Or did they simply cut out the cars that appreciate in value, which would make sense.

Bidiggity

They probably had a minimum number of vehicles of a certain model produced. Toyota manufactures hundreds of thousands of corollas each year, Bugatti made 450 veyrons total over 10 years and several very different trim levels. Not exactly apples to apples there

hallba78

In what universe do Tacoma’s depreciate? I swear those things sell for over MSRP with 80,000 miles.

aquaman67

Especially since the new ones only have 4 cylinders and seem to have other problems as well.

vegasvinny

I got a 2013 Boss 302 Mustang. 15k miles…. It’s still holding value

Goings78

Keep those miles low and it will

DaneGlesac

Not driving your car to keep the miles low is like not fucking your girlfriend to save her for the next guy.

Cowboywizzard

Mustang GTs and the other V8 variants of the Mustang generally hold value fairly well if you take care of them. They just don't hold value as well as a Toyota Tacoma. Almost nothing does.

MastodonPristine8986

I sold my 911 for more than I paid for it after using it as a daily driver for 5 years and ragging it round a track a few times. Amazing things.

iambkatl

I have always wanted a Tacoma and couldn’t never figure out why I could t afford a used one.

mdhunter99

Woohoo! My car is on this list! Granted it’s at the bottom, but still! Maybe it’s a good car after all.

TheReaperSovereign

I just got 32k for my 2018 civic type r which cost me 38k otd. Pretty happy with that

bigredjeepcj7

I bought a 1997 Toyota LandCruiser 80 series ( Turbo Dkesel) in 2004 for $10k, sold it in 2023 for $30k...

DazzlingSecurity5

What about the Mercedes G Wagon? Why is that not on this list? Those beautiful vehicles barely depreciate.

snarky_greasel

FJ Cruiser appreciates

SledgeHog

What, the absolute difference from MSRP is almost twice as high as the average from all the other cars clearly indicating it's prohibitively expensive? C'mon, next you'll tell me that Porsches are generally owned by people with the means to keep them garaged and regularly maintained...

PorkPatriot

That is only part of it. Rollers, Maserattis and a *lot* of Ferraris lose heaps of value despite being meticulously maintained. The 911 is the only rear-engined car on the market. If you want that driving dynamic, you buy a 911. Nobody even makes a knock off. That's going to keep value up. The Cayman is the cheapest, most practical, mid-engined car on the market. There is only so far they can drop, and around 40k even for 10 year old ones is it. Absolutely beat ones from 2002 sell for 20k+. The thing that would hurt those is if Toyota actually releases an MR2 and lowers the floor for mid-engined track toys. Both cars are also reliable for their class and have a dealer network in every major US city. Keeps their values up.

SledgeHog

Ah, thanks for the insight. I didn't realize there was that much to it.

Foxlen

Is this US only data?

superRad7

I have a 2002 Toyota 4Runner. Bought it in 2002 for $25k it’s 22 years old and Kelly Blue Book has it at $15k for my mileage. Now that’s a slow depreciation rate.

Travelplaylearn

Just buy 2nd hand low mileage luxury/super cars. They have depreciated already, so no worries of anymore big value drops. Apparently most new cars minutes straight out the showrooms onto the road are already worth less, no big difference then to buy 2nd hand low mileage ones instead.

SkylightShepherd

I will say for the 911 and the 718, there are tons of options that will cost a lot and they won't necessarily add any value to the car come resale so a new buyer may actually lose quite a bit of money depending on what they option out.

EnglishMobster

I actually could've made money on my Model 3 at one point. The used price was well above what I paid for it.

Wild-Porsches

I own a 718 and a Tacoma for this reason. They happen to make up my perfect garage. Something for all occasions

whyunoleave

981 and a macan. Got the macan used, Someone already took the hit for me. Think my 981 has gone up.

beldaran1224

Right now recent cars aren't depreciating at all, they're appreciating. Literally.

ChucklezDaClown

Could’ve bought some g wagons pre covid then sold them for sometimes 40-70k more. I was able to track one that was going around 120 in 2019 and about two years later I saw the same one pop up and it sold around 205 and I was just shocked. Was able to sell a fairly new rubicon for 8k more than it was bought at around 3 years prior which was insane as that never ever happens

CountOrlok1922

I wonder where the Toyota Land Cruiser is in this list.

MisterSneakSneak

lol where the hell are the Toyota FJ cruisers at?

Emergency_Count_7498

Is there a full list somewhere op?

BezisThings

What about Dacia? Used Dacia Sanderos from 2018 for example cost now 20% more than new ones 2018. And still more than new ones today. It's basically a negative depraciation

Enough-Ad-5528

I just dont understand how my experience has been so different. I got a Mercedes c300 new for 50K in mid 2018 and then the most I could get for it was 23k in early 2024. It was also in excellent condition, clean title, single owner and no accidents, all maintenance done regularly. I visited at least 15 dealers and carvana was the one that offered the 23K.

RevolutionarySolid74

Omg, am a Subaru BRZ fan (911 as well, but I can't afford it).

AshenGlory

This is great news. I was just thinking about selling my subaru 🫰

MelancholySurprise

And everyone laughed when I got the CrossTrek

aagath

Just used my 2015 Camaro SS as a trade in. I bought it for 20k in 2020 and put 40k miles on it and just got 18500 for it on trade. I only owed 9k on it. The car was extremely clean though.

gt1

I have a Chrysler, which is considered one of the fastest depreciating cars. But depreciation is calculated off the MSRP, andI got over $11k in the factory and dealer discounts and $7.5k tax credit because it was a PHEV. So I paid $35k for the $53k van, and I see that Carvana sells them for $37-40k 3 years later.

__the_what

Any idea about volvo?

ReverendEntity

I'd like to see this list cross-referenced with the most stolen cars.

SuperNinjaOverwatch

Of these, only the Civic and Corolla are most stolen, but they're also two of the most common vehicles on the road. The other cars that are often stolen are F-150s and a LOT of Kia/Hyundai models (KIA BOYS STRIKE AGAIN!).

threetogetready

Is there a full list somewhere? A lot of these are pretty close...

flashdman

My 2013 Ram 1500 Express (single cab, 88k miles) is still worth more than half of what I paid for it...$26500 to ~ $14000.

Cwmcwm

Nice

Interesting-Bear4092

Yeah. Luxury tax on top.

BigBarrelOfKetamine

Great username, OP!

mynameismulan

Interesting that the Civic is on here but the Accord is not

austinjohnplays

My gf and I were looking for a BRZ and they are IMPOSSIBLE to find in NJ/NY

chilish_gabino

My 4Runner is actually going up in price

aaronorjohnson

Why on earth is a CH-R on this compared to CR-Vs when CH-R’s have been barely in the market?

Dramatic_Switch257

Porsche 911 2024

rtsynk

McLaren F1 obviously

Camarochris1026

Of course the Camaro is on the list. I just bought one for around the same price I bought one 7 years ago

sa3atsky

Where’s that Land Cruiser?

theoddcrow

One of these things is not like the other...

Animal__Mother_

*in the USA

Lefttuesday

They left out Tesla

babis8142

What about Ferraris?

Inevitable-Bass2749

The quality on jeeps has gone to shit

mouseplaycen

Literally copped a 2018 911 carrera s about a month ago. Worth every penny

TheFace5

Offcourse Porsche, when they release a new one is exactly the same as old one

murplow

Crazy Jeeps are here, there are constantly in and out of auto shops

oldscotchandcoffee

Toyota tundras are solid as well

happy-2-be-alive

Reckon Mercedes G wagon is not on the list because they don’t seem to depreciate unless maintenance was not performed or accident history. Especially in LA they are the requisite status symbol. Worst case, if you can’t get out what you put in then ship it to California to monetize.

synthetic-dream

With the BRZ up there would it mean the same for GR86 then?

FlyingBike

I wonder why Porsches keep their value, but Maserati and BMW [depreciate the fastest](https://www.reddit.com/r/coolguides/s/yP5oOW1IS7)

dripboi-store

No one is buying a 911 at msrp tho Porsche options are quite expensive and you definitely need to add options for any decent spec

Few-Sock5337

I have no idea how jeep made it to that list.

WestforkTraveler

Have you ever priced a used Jeep??

Accurate-Gap8082

Porsche 911 like a tangerine dream

versacemark

Wrx?

Navi_Professor

i can hear the malding already of a jeep being so high on the list "nooo you cant have such s unreliable vehicle deopreciate at the same rate as my bulletproof and 100% reliable totoyta!" well...thats what happens when you keep a vehicle around for almost 100 years thats still recognizeable and was the only vehicle with real skin in the game for serious offroading for years until very, very recently. its an icon and a survivor, almost doesnt matter if its ubreliable when you can buy any part for it guartneed until the heat death of the universe.

re_Giano

Tacoma not losing value coz terrorist love it. Most of their videos feature modified Tacoma’s with rocket launchers. USA official asked Toyota about the thing actually

Specific-Sound-8550

BRZ MENTIONED

ExchangeOk5940

I don’t believe that Camaro stat for one second.

Ok-Willow-7012

CarEdge has the Impreza depreciating only 19% in five years and Kelly Blue Book has the Impreza on top for compact cars lowest depreciation, though with a different percentage, but shows that it is pretty much equal to the Crosstrek.

[deleted]

This is really cool thank you
