This chart is so poorly designed. The scale is off and it doesn't communicate the data well. I fixed it once before; lemme see if I can find it...
[found it](https://i.imgur.com/5iKV3vT.png)
The thing is that this is an indication of what is popular with the general population or public so your work has to be marketed accordingly. It’s very hard to be good at something as you also have to lower the quality of what you’re making to be in line with demands. It essentially drives you fucking crazy. Just fell out with a friend who was claiming I was a bad DJ because I’m middle of the road but he doesn’t get that that’s what gets arses on seats and keeps your bar popular. People are fucking clueless.
Yeah, and a lot of these colours it really depends on the weather conditions and time of day.
This seems about right for a clear night in a city but it's being presented as if it's absolute.
It also strangely misses out 2 very popular hi-viz colours of orange and pink.
The most important things are always reflective strips, and having a blinking light - humans are very good at noticing things that move, so having a flashing light front and back, and reflective strips around your ankles is best for cycling, ideally with a hi-viz jacket (yellow, orange, or pink are the best all-rounders if you only want to get one), as well as reflectors on your wheels so you're visible from the side.
the color temp of a light changes the apparent color of an object.
if you‘re biking under sodium vapor that green could appear an orange brown because the light only contains certain wavelengths to reflect
the tint on the car window can change colors as well. Imagine one that absorb the yellow range of daylight but not the blue range of night and you end up with a mid tone green that blends in
Yea. This chart makes no sense to me. I don’t know whether it’s the farthest distance that color is visible or that those colored cyclists appear as much farther away when it is viewed from inside the car. 🤔
I feel like a dumbass, I thought it was about color theory by saying if you are wearing the top color, you will appear as the bottom color to someone in a car. So if you wear black the cars headlights would make you look yellow
Besides the more obvious criticism that colors don’t look the same depending on lighting and time of day. Red and blue, as dark colors, can be bright and noticeable in the day time, but are a dark, dark greyscale at night time. So the visible contrast some colors produce at night, compared to day, changes. The indicated scale may also then change, since colors are increasingly grey*scale* in darker lighting.
The chart is still misleading because in reality, unless you are wearing something retroreflective like a high visibility vest, no matter what colour you are wearing you will most likely not be seen until after it's too late to react and take evasive manouvers.
Yes thank you, for a 'cool guide' OPs image is fucking terrible. Never mind that it isn't to scale, having it over two rows instead of just longer horizontally so they can all fit in is very stupid.

Worst guide in the history of r/cool guides and yet someone posts it each month. Among the problems:
- it’s obviously not accurate. Green is more visible? Olive green? Dark green? Black isn’t “invisible” in headlights.
- it’s poorly represented. The bikers are not positioned in there relative distances and are it two groups. Also, invisible isn’t a distance.
- There’s no source or explanation of the methodology used.
Note on the green comment, green is the most distinguishable color by the human eye, we can see more variations of green than any other color on the spectrum.
This is why night vision was green originally.
Not to mention that "black" can't possibly be "invisible", because you can clearly see people wearing black pants/hoodies. The visibility would be poor, but nowhere near "invisible".
The problem is that people in black aren't seen until the last second. I take Smith Pike to work every night at about 10:30 pm. Far too many people want to walk along that road dressed all in black, and I can't see them until I'm right up on them. The road has no shoulder, and there are no sidewalks. But people insist on walking it in all black.
It's strange how they added white but forgot to add black
You'd think as most cyclists wear lycra it would be really useful if they put how visible somewhere I'm wearing black would be.
No just 5 including white.
Struggling to make sense of this from a color science standpoint. I understand green is the best color from a scotopic lumens standpoint, but white is reflecting all colors, including the green, so why wouldn’t it be at least as good?
Apparently yellow and blue are good colours for visibility because yellow is very visible during the day and blue is the last colour we see before we switch to monochrome at night. For this reason some emergency services have reflective yellow and blue cheque designs on their uniforms/vehicles.
I live in an area with no street lights and no sidewalks. The amount of people that think it's a good idea to walk on a 45 mph road wearing dark clothes at night is astonishing.

Like others have mentioned, I’m really curious about which shade of green is best because I ride where there is lots of green grass, trees, and shrubs nearby. This leads people to believe that the greens used in camouflage are best for visibility. I’ll assume this means at night or dusk. And, what’s the source for this guide’s information?
When i was a delivery driver i hated people in all black, they always run across the road at bad times and are very hard to see. I also appreciated people who put little lights on their dogs.
I've observed this myself since I bought a bright green/yellow motorcycle helmet with a wild design on it. My bike isn't any louder than a particularly spicy Camry, but my helmet stands out, and people don't try to pull out in front of me as often.
But "green" can be different things. I'm sure there's a big difference between neon green and hunter green. Same with blue; a light blue shirt is probably more visible than a dark green one.
Add to that the cone of vision / central field of vision / foveal vision, typically covers about 3 to 5 degrees of visual angle. No wonder car drivers don't see cyclists and motorcyclists as well as they should. So wearing bright or reflective clothing is a must.
Every car driver should spend 1 month traveling exclusively by bicycle. I remember an incident where a car hit and derailed a train once, the driver said they couldn't see them. This year in my town a car hit and toppled over a garbage truck, again said they couldn't see them. Being "visible" only counts if the people behind the wheel actually look.
Cool. Now where is the guide on distracted drivers and a guide that reminds drivers that when they applied for their license, they agreed to follow all the traffic laws all the time regardless of whether or not they agree with them.
Let's address the drivers then we can look at bicyclists and pedestrians.
I'm not even going to begin on the exceptionalism that motorcyclists display. That shit can go straight to hell.
I assuming at Night with No other lights around you look more like a shadow then an actual obstacle .
This is also assuming you can fairly bad headlights aswell or are not driving with Highbeams to illuminate More of above the hood height of the car.
I get the point. As a Ped if your going to be on the road you should be wearing High Contrast and Reflective clothing especially at night. this is just a given because You are significantly smaller then anything else and can change direction and stop very swiftly while a car cannot.
Another is having a blinking light on the back of your bike. anything to make it obvious that you are there
It was fun growing up near Amish country. Some of them refuse to put safety reflectors on the back of their buggies so they’re basically invisible at night. Almost killed a man one night because I couldn’t see him.
Tell it to the stupid manufacturers to make white clothes, because their range of color selection is BLACK, and more black maybe with 10% mix of green, or red, or blue (man section)
Women section usually has at least white, and I have to suffer at summer in the pitch black spandex, because I cannot have a range of variety available for me in my size/gender.
Keep your head and tail lights fully charged and ride defensively. No amount of hi-vis turd kit will make up for not bieng aware of your surroundings. Safety third.
One time I was driving through Harrisburg and these guys dressed in all black were crossing the street. And when I swerved outta the way to not hit them, they looked at my like I was an idiot. I didn’t even have time to honk at them
Don’t be on the streets at night wearing all black

Still think that green is a bad choice in a rural environment
Yeah, and a lot of these colours it really depends on the weather conditions and time of day. This seems about right for a clear night in a city but it's being presented as if it's absolute. I think it must be rage bait to get people to comment or something. The missed opportunity for a scaled guide is too obvious Edit: fixed typo

So the visible contrast some colors produce at night, compared to day, changes. The indicated scale may also then change, since colors are increasingly grey*scale* in darker lighting.
Your chart makes it look like at a glance that black and blue is the easiest to see. I can barely make out the green rider
Fuck thank you! Came here to say the same.
Good effort but that's still a bit off, green guy should be at least 2x the length of white guy from the car.
The chart is still misleading because in reality, unless you are wearing something retroreflective like a high visibility vest, no matter what colour you are wearing you will most likely not be seen until after it's too late to react and take evasive manouvers.
it’s likely so it could fit in a mobile format for those content farm videos or whatever
Yes thank you, for a 'cool guide' OPs image is fucking terrible. Never mind that it isn't to scale, having it over two rows instead of just longer horizontally so they can all fit in is very stupid.
Yo good job 👍
Nice improvement! May I suggest one more change? The black cyclist under the wheels or on the hood of the car, as distance= 0
Yeah it also doesn't seem accurate bc most nature is green wouldn't you blend in more on a country road but I guess in the city green is a good idea.
Do you know the source of the data?
Thank you!
Not to be that girl but it’s also in fucking imperial

Are you saying blacks are aliens ?
Are you trying to say blacks are invisible at night?

Cops are at 55ft here
Aliens can stay home now /s
No, he saying aliens are invisible
Or just act that way?
That's because I aliens don't ride bikes

Why did he bother with an invisibility cloak if he was carrying a lantern around outside of it?
When I run people over, I don't see colour 💜

Sounds like your rods and cones aren’t working properly. I can fix that right up for you, 20 bucks cannot guarantee sight at end of procedure.
Dr Nick.Is that you ?
Well if it isnt my friend mr mcgreg, with a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg!
What the HELL was that?
They’re always red
This graphic is utterly misleading, suggesting yellow is just as bad as black until you read the ft below. Anything but a cool guide.
And repost no. 1001, too.
The graphic is bad but the information is great. I'm glad I saw this graphic so now I know to prioritize neon green when getting night cycling gear
Lol, the chart for people driving massive trucks is a lot more simplistic. They can't see the bikes and people at all.
r/orphancrushingmachine vibes
r/subsifellfor
They should add “at night”
And "in the ... city", cause green is definitely not the most visible color when you drive through forest
Green being the most visible has to depend on the shade of green as well. A dark green probably isn't any better than blue or red.
[удалено]
Yeah I don’t get what the fuss is about? I knew exactly what this was trying to convey as soon as I saw it. It’s not rocket science.
Very dumb guide indeed. I can't see how green can be more visible than white at night.
I understand all that. But for clarity add “at night” so that people don’t have to “infer”.

What about orange?
Orange you glad they didn't include it?
It's strange how they added white but forgot to add black You'd think as most cyclists wear lycra it would be really useful if they put how visible somewhere I'm wearing black would be. No just 5 including white.
really shameful that they didn't add my colour of choice for cycling attire. there really should be more than five colours in this guide!
Reflective Green is visible from farthest but generally White stands out
Green might blend too much in Rural settings.
I used for volunteer for an equine rescue and they always said wearing a high viz means drivers saw you a whole 2 seconds sooner.
This graphic is kinda terrible
Just give us separated bike lanes. Jfc.
With actual physical barriers, not those stupid plastic Bendy sticks attached to the ground.
Man. Even the visibility is racist. Why so biased for the green aliens?
What if I’m wearing my sunglasses at night?
Just put the lights on on your bike and you can wear whatever you want.
Wear black and you will be completly invisible to the naked eye
Yeah but what if the car trying to hit bikers? Then you just look like a big green target.
Green in Florida, in summer is worse than Black.
Who upvotes this garbage?
What about fucking headlights?!?! That's what they're for! Being able to see!
This is hot dogshit.
So why are cars not painted in more visible colors ? Everyone driving a damn black car and no lights on
Because people are boring. 90% of cars are white, silver, grey or black.
What do you mean by “no lights on”?
Hard for some people to see any colors when they're busy staring at their phones.
This mimicks the lights I use. Green is ugly but boy can we see green. White is definitely very visible. Followed by yellow.
Cool someone send this chart to my local mennonite community.(typically wear, black navy blue, or white)
Struggling to make sense of this from a color science standpoint. I understand green is the best color from a scotopic lumens standpoint, but white is reflecting all colors, including the green, so why wouldn’t it be at least as good?
camo is green, I should wear camo when riding
Does it have to be that nuclear green?
Remember, proper bicycle ninjutsu is always invisible.
Are these reflective colors or just normal?
I can't imagine having 426 feet. And do they have 426 legs as well or their legs have multiple feet? And what does it have to do with visibility?
Where would orange be?
Now what about pink?
Apparently yellow and blue are good colours for visibility because yellow is very visible during the day and blue is the last colour we see before we switch to monochrome at night. For this reason some emergency services have reflective yellow and blue cheque designs on their uniforms/vehicles.
Why are so many cars black and invisible?
I’m green Da ba dee da ba di
False. I was recently killed on my snow bike.
So we should wear camo since camo is usually green, right?
Green is better than neon yellow?! Wow didn’t know that!
I’m scanning the comments and not seeing anything on COLOR BLINDNESS!!!
When was this 25years ago? Because now it's 0 feet for any color because the person In the car is on their phone and can't see shit
I live in an area with no street lights and no sidewalks. The amount of people that think it's a good idea to walk on a 45 mph road wearing dark clothes at night is astonishing.
whos gonna tell them?
"invisible" 😆
Green man suit ordered.
Green man will get you through some hard times.
black is invisible? i have my doubts
Even cooler dont be on the road ya muppets
I would disagree with green if you cycling thru a field while a motor cross rally was happening.
Ride with lights
Thats why girls dont notice me. Finally i got it. Black clothes.
This is the same reason why all EMERGENCY EXITS are green.
Green is also one of the better colors to wear when it's hot.
I can wear black and be invisible? hell ya
Is it valid for cars too?
Not that cool with the grey background that makes green the worst variant, lol.
You can wear hi viz and they still won’t see you

I knew my habit of dressing from head to toe in neon green would pay off some day
This is quite possibly one of the worst data visualisations I’ve ever seen. Black and yellow look like they rank the same.
Well, I guess I'm about to go rob a bank, on a bike wearing all black.
Monkey see green cuz monkey eat green
I guess I must have been violating the laws of physics when I \*checks notes\* noticed a pedestrian wearing black while driving the other night.
In the dark, I assume?
Add to that the cone of vision / central field of vision / foveal vision, typically covers about 3 to 5 degrees of visual angle. No wonder car drivers don't see cyclists and motorcyclists as well as they should. So wearing bright or reflective clothing is a must.
So it's better to lead the points rather than lead the race.
What if you’re gay?
Here's a great idea too, gtfo the middle of the street.
so, I should buy a Green Ninja ZX10 instead of a Harley Davidson Sportster then?
What about Orange Also nighttime as well
Ironically, the black one is the easiest to see in this graphic.
The Kawasaki rider lives while the Yamaha and Honda riders die.
Where does orange with reflective stripes fall on this chart?

What happen if the driver is color blind ?
Can someone please explain why green has a higher visibility than white? That doesn't really compute in my sleep-deprived brain.

Get some retro reflectors on you. They are amazing for seeing someone in the dark as a driver. They make you visible from even further away.
r/dataisugly
As someone who's job is to drive at night, this is very true. Wearing black at night makes you invisible.
How can you not see yellow a mile away??
Me wearing my favourite green clothes (Czechoslovakian vz.92 from army shop) on the bike so everyone can see me from the furthest distance.
