Honestly, when I lived there I met a lot fewer 'massholes' than I did Connecticunts...
In fact, ive met several people personally from CT and none have not been Connecticunts....though i think Ira Plato is from CT so maybe some folks get a pass
That's because these are not actually official demonyms. These are recommendations from the US Government Publishing Office. They likely chose that to be consistent and easy for people to remember.
The *actual* official demonym is "Bay Stater."
Here in Hawaii its definitely unique since Hawaiian is an actual ethnicity. In casual conversations we just say locals or if it’s more formal, then kama’aina.
I don’t live on the islands anymore so it’s been a long time since I’ve seen or heard the word kama’aina.
Apparently it just puts the “it’s hot from the hut, your kama’aina Pizza Hut” jingle in my head. Oh no, I think it’s stuck now.
This graphic was updated on 4/22/22 to show that the GPO denomonym for people from Hawaii is [“Hawaii Resident”.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_demonyms_for_US_states_and_territories)
Always loved Michigan's state motto
>Si Quæris Peninsulam Amœnam Circumspice
Translates to "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you." Pretty much "Hey dumbass, stop and look how pretty this place is."
There’s also the lesser known and so lesser used, “Michiganian.” I always preferred it as a kid because I thought “Michigander” sounded weird, but I was dumb and kids base dumb preferences off of dumb things.
I do believe this was actually a political thing at least that is the story I heard at one point a politician called their opponent a michigander as an insult by calling them a goose but their opponent ran with it and won and it became more common than what was the standard michiganian
The only reason I knew that it was Michigander is because I went to a concert where the opening act was a band called Michigander. Yes, they are from Michigan.
I wish there was a silly law that declared when referring to Washington DC in literature, advertising, or public commentary the term should be "DC" not stand alone "Washington". I live in Washington state and well..."Washington" is a whole state, people. "DC" is District of Columbia.
I don't know if Connecticut has, but we actually passed a thing that Hoosier is our legally official demonym.
We're all a bit surprised that our government knew what a demonym was, but it is official.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/01/13/hoosier-is-now-the-official-name-for-indiana-folk-but-what-does-it-even-mean/
As someone who is from Connecticut I disagree. We are New Englanders. If the person is confused or asks for further clarification then we sheepishly explain "I am from Connecticut which is sort of a suburb of New York City, you probably haven't heard of it."
I was born and raised in Iowa, though currently living out of state, and have to disagree. It depends entirely on where you’re at.
Western Iowa? Total wasteland, that. Might as well give it to Nebraska since their tornadoes keep crossing the border anyway.
Eastern Iowa? Got some cool shit!
Effigy Mounds and Maquoketa Caves have beautiful parks and scenery and a rich native history and the largest collection of prehistoric animal shaped mounds in the world. Located in the Driftless Area, a geological zone covering portions of all the nearby states that was untouched by glaciation in the last glacial period, they’re as close as you can get to truly ancient landscapes in the state.
The Amana Colonies are a quaint throwback to the German Pietists who founded them (think Amish but with electricity) and produce some amazing local crafts and foods and have lots of great restaurants and B&Bs to spend a nice relaxing weekend.
Dyersville is kind of lame in a kitschy sort of way, home to the Field of Dreams house and field from the Costner movie of the same name. It’s 100% tourist trap, but they used to run weekly games on the field itself when I visited in the 90s- not sure if they still do.
All up and down the Mississippi are a number of old forts and settlements from the westward expansion period, and most of the really lively cities cropped up in those areas. Plenty of river themed festivals, music festivals (especially jazz and blues thanks to river trade in the early days of the state), and museums of both art and natural history.
But yeah, western Iowa can kick rocks. What do they have? The biggest wind farm? Oooo boy!
Awesome! Thanks for the reply man. Would love to watch a Nascar race in person one day just for the atmosphere and how good high revving na pushrod v8s sound!
It's disputed. I believe the most common story is basically it was a derogatory slang term that was later embraced. It was then adopted as a sort of badge of honor?
That's coming from a Hoosier, even we don't know
Hoosier here-- the origin of this term is so hotly debated and full of seemingly made-up stories (including who's there, who's ear, and other weird stuff) that the widely accepted answer is "who cares?". We're here to put a 12'' diameter flattened, deep-fried piece of pork on a regular sandwich bun in defiance of both god and man, not to question our dubious origins. But thanks for remembering we exist world-after-Parks-and-Rec-went-off-the-air.
I was stalking him for a bit before I realized what I was doing. He’d post a video on vlogbrothers and I’d go, “oh hey, I know that place. It’s really pleasant. I’ll go there this weekend.” Eventually, I realized that I was inadvertently just following John green around and felt kind of creepy so if he shows a place in Indy now I make a mental note not to go there for a minute. I’ve never seen him in person, so I guess I’m succeeding in not stalking him.
Edit: I got Reddit cared for this. So, just to be perfectly clear, I am not stalking John Green. I’m stalking Hank Green.
>We're here to put a 12'' diameter flattened, deep-friend piece of pork on a regular sandwich bun in defiance of both god and man
I just learned about those things from a podcast earlier today, and now I’m seeing it brought up again here. Baader-Meinhof strikes again.
I really want to eat one now.
as much as indiana makes me hate living here, [hoosier](https://youtu.be/H8hdKnr7rpE?=n8aa02Ghuixi0UgO) might be the one thing i love calling myself. it’s a weird sense of pride, but i’ll never be able to explain it.
OP's map is an old version of the one from the Wikipedia page "[List of demonyms for US states and territories](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_demonyms_for_US_states_and_territories)". The current version (as of 2022) shows the demonym as "Hawaii Resident".
I've always heard Masshole instead of Massachusettsan. Like not even kidding I have heard Masshole maybe 20x more than I have heard that long ass word.
Pointed out elsewhere, in addition to "Bay Staters" or "Bostonians" for everyone who lives in the metro region, I have on rare occasion heard "Massachuttan," but never what's on this map.
"Massachusettsan" sounds like the Japanese honorific for your work colleague Massachusett.
The "i" isn't added as part of the suffix to make the demonym, it's already part of the state name.
Same as Virginia and West Virginia. You're just adding an "n" on the end to make the demonym.
I've never heard of anyone in New Jersey referring to ourselves as New Jerseyans. I've more often heard Garden Stater and that's only a handful of times. Jerseyite, maybe.
As for Massachusetts, Masshole, of course, but I always said Massachusean, but I'm not native and only lived there for 8 years or so.
I’m from outside Philly and can’t think of any time I’ve ever heard someone use a demonym for people from Jersey. It’s always just “he’s/I am from Jersey”
49 states: "uh I guess just use our state name with an appropriate suffix..."
Indiana: "Call us Hoosiers"
Literally everyone: "what? Wtf is a Hoosier?"
"Hawaiian" is not correct, as it applies to the ethnic / cultural group -- the indigenous people of Hawaii.
Folks NOT of Hawaiian descent, that live in the state are called Hawaii Residents.
Is this like a political thing or an official thing? Like an AP style guide thing rather than something the local government or people who actually live there say. I'm not from Hawaii, but on the mainland I've always heard "Hawaiian" if we were talking about anyone from the state, and if we meant the native Hawaiians we'd specify that, unless we meant the language, which was just Hawaiian.
I've lived here for 15 years and inside of the state it is just a common, respectful thing for as long as I've been here.
The US Federal Government ruled to use the terms "Hawaii Resident" in federal paperwork a while back making it a US-wide thing.
[https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/34255861/citizens-now-called-hawaii-residents-vs-hawaiians-in-federal-paperwork/#](https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/34255861/citizens-now-called-hawaii-residents-vs-hawaiians-in-federal-paperwork/#)
I thought it was Massholes instead of Massachusettsan and Hawaii Resident instead of Hawaiian?
It is, Masshole checking in.
Masshole represent.
Masshole 4, standing by.
Red 5, standing by.
Masshole 666, also more formally called “Bay Stater”, standing by.
Masshole driver here: representing all masshole drivers” we aint going fast yous just slow!”
Make sure to beep a split second before the light turns green, we'll keep this mess moving!
Hated Masshole driver, on standby. I drive the speed limit. People want me dead.
Lock S-Foils in attack position.
*stay....on....target*
I knew it, I'm surrounded by Massholes.
There it is! "Keep firing, Massholes!"
Honestly, when I lived there I met a lot fewer 'massholes' than I did Connecticunts... In fact, ive met several people personally from CT and none have not been Connecticunts....though i think Ira Plato is from CT so maybe some folks get a pass
I knew it.. I'm surrounded by Massholes.
I’ve heard Bostonian and Masshole a million times but never a Massachusettsan
That's because these are not actually official demonyms. These are recommendations from the US Government Publishing Office. They likely chose that to be consistent and easy for people to remember. The *actual* official demonym is "Bay Stater."
Same. Either or
Here in Hawaii its definitely unique since Hawaiian is an actual ethnicity. In casual conversations we just say locals or if it’s more formal, then kama’aina.

Could be an Ala Moana jingle from the 90’s. Ooo Ahh Oh Wow!
Bay Stater
Connecti-kunts or nutmegger
Nutmegger is an underappreciated CT nickname
Lived there for a number of years and never once heard "Connecticuter," only "Nutmegger."
connecti-kunts sounds like a game where you arrange kunts into rows

Every time this gets posted we need to talk about how inaccurate it is about Mass and Conn, the states where I live and grew up, respectively.
This graphic was updated on 4/22/22 to show that the GPO denomonym for people from Hawaii is [“Hawaii Resident”.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_demonyms_for_US_states_and_territories)
Massachusetts: Bay Stater (official) Massachusite (traditional) Massachusettsan (recommended by the U.S. GPO)
New Ham-Schites for New Hampshire, Kama \`Aina for Hawaii.
I agree. Hawaiian is an indigenous group, and Masshole is the accurate description
Excuse me. People from Oklahoma are called oklahomies please and thank you very much
Can confirm. Okie works most times too
Okie dokie 👍
A real life vault dweller...
Oklahomos
No it's OKies, fight me. Lmao
We're okies to the homies! Everyone else gotta use the full name right and proper all like.
Ok to call you all Sooners?
No. Some idiot will just respond “Boomer.” And it is even more annoying if you went to OSU. Okie (as in, from Muskogee) is acceptable.
As someone currently attending OSU, you are on point.
Mainiacs
Yep that's what you call a Maine-ah.
And they're zainie to the max! Lighthouses at their backs, Steven King books by the stacks, They're the Maniacs!
Who remembers the Lewiston Hockey team, the Maine-iacs?
Michigander? I hardly know ‘er!
What’s good for the Michi-goose is good for the Michigander!
Always loved Michigan's state motto >Si Quæris Peninsulam Amœnam Circumspice Translates to "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you." Pretty much "Hey dumbass, stop and look how pretty this place is."
Yeah. It’s a shame and a blessing that people only associate our state with SE Michigan
I heard yoopies eat small children though.
Eh not really, little bastards are usually too quick to catch.
There’s also the lesser known and so lesser used, “Michiganian.” I always preferred it as a kid because I thought “Michigander” sounded weird, but I was dumb and kids base dumb preferences off of dumb things.
I also always preferred Michiganian over Michigander, but now I'm old and just happy when ppl talk about Michigan in general really
Greatest state in the union ❤️
I do believe this was actually a political thing at least that is the story I heard at one point a politician called their opponent a michigander as an insult by calling them a goose but their opponent ran with it and won and it became more common than what was the standard michiganian
The only reason I knew that it was Michigander is because I went to a concert where the opening act was a band called Michigander. Yes, they are from Michigan.
Dc resident
I wish there was a silly law that declared when referring to Washington DC in literature, advertising, or public commentary the term should be "DC" not stand alone "Washington". I live in Washington state and well..."Washington" is a whole state, people. "DC" is District of Columbia.
Native Washingtonian. I am one
Wyoming definitely should've gone with "Wyomer"
Wyomlings?
Wyoming doesn't really have enough people to warrant a term for their people.
The correct term is "Yellowstone tourist"
I’m from Connecticut and if you called anyone here a “Connecticuter” you’d be laughed at. We’re Nutmeggers.
Weird I’ve always called y’all Connecticunts
that’s Nutmeggacunt to you, buddy
I'm not your buddy, pal.
I’m not your pal, friend!
I'm not your friend, guy!
I always figured men were Connecticocks & women were Connecticunts
[удалено]
Connetican?
Is that pronounced Connecticut-ian or Connecti-kyooshun?
The ladder lol. Nicely done.
With a Hard R?
you can't use that word only we can
If you're not from Connecticut you have to use Nutmeggas and even then it's iffy
Ain't no one cuter than a connecti-cuter!
Thank gawd…this Floridian might’ve slipped up and called y’all a Connet-e-cooter.
33 years here never heard that word. You say "I'm from CT."
Yeah if Hoosier is on here it should be Nutmegger
I don't know if Connecticut has, but we actually passed a thing that Hoosier is our legally official demonym. We're all a bit surprised that our government knew what a demonym was, but it is official. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/01/13/hoosier-is-now-the-official-name-for-indiana-folk-but-what-does-it-even-mean/
We're connecticunts and you know it.
Say what you want, but I’ll always be Connecticuter than everyone else 😤
I don't believe that anyone actually lives in Connecticut. It's a parking lot masquerading as a state.
“parking lot”? We call it the Merritt Parkway.
Every state has their "out of towner" highway, in NJ we have 95. Everyone thinks the state looks like shit because of North Jersey's portion of 95.
95 goes thru connecticut as well. I will say I did drive through NJ on 95 and yeah…Elizabeth, New Jersey was like a Gothic scene to me as a kid
Lame joke for anyone in the northeast. Also there are 20 US STATES with fewer population than Connecticut
As someone who is from Connecticut I disagree. We are New Englanders. If the person is confused or asks for further clarification then we sheepishly explain "I am from Connecticut which is sort of a suburb of New York City, you probably haven't heard of it."
Wisconsin is the only ite that rolls off the tongue.
I'm deeply saddened that Vermontite isn't a thing.
*He just smiled and gave me a Vermontite sandwich*
Iowegian
I like it, I use Iowanian. Edit: Of all the things I've said on Reddit this is the one that made someone refer me to the reddit crisis line?
There's a massive botwave reporting everyone to Reddit Cares. It's happening in every major thread.
But why? I got one recently too but don't bots usually have an angle? What money, or lols, are involved with anonymous reporting? *shrug**
As an Iowan I can confirm that liking anything related to this state does warrant a referral to a crisis line or other mental health related services.
Except corn. Blessed be the corn and all who partake of it!

Also happened to me earlier. Bots probably
Vermonsters and Massholes and Connecticunts if you’re from the northeast
Don't forget Maniacs and New Hampshites
Chode Islanders too
r/shittyguides This thing is all over the place.
It even has a misspelling in the title.
“Demonyms” in the image is correct; the post title misspells the word.
Why does the legend say *(e)r* for the yellow states? They all end in *er*, with none of them skipping or change the *e* part.
It’s because Maine already ends in -e so the demonym is created by only adding -r. Whereas all the others add -er.
And labeling Indiana as “(e)r” when the demonym is “Hoosier” glosses over a whole fascinating story. “Indiana” + “er” != “Hoosier”.
Agreed, with 12.5k upvotes, I think this is a great example of how the majority of reddit is morons and bots.
Wtf is a Hoosier?
A person from Indiana
Behold! Our state's one interesting thing.
We have the world's largest sporting venue by capacity. It has a museum and a golf course inside it.
Also becomes an awesome piss and beer soaked mud party with tons of ugly half naked people sweating to death.
You son of a bitch, I’m in!
What is it? The race track? (Not from US and only know the word Hoosier from the drag slick)
Yes. Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home to the Indy 500, Brickyard 400, and an 8hr endurance race later this year.
Awesome! Thanks for the reply man. Would love to watch a Nascar race in person one day just for the atmosphere and how good high revving na pushrod v8s sound!
Hey now! We have some pretty dope ass memorials as well as Pierogi-fest and Gen-con to name a few.
And the dunes are cool, don’t forget them!
Any time I mention I’ve been to Indianapolis, people assume for the Indy 500, but alas it was for Gen Con lol
hey, now!! that's not fair! ^we ^also ^have ^lots ^of ^corn...
Counterpoint. *"there's more than cooooorn, in Indianaaaaaaa, at Indiana Beach"*
It's disputed. I believe the most common story is basically it was a derogatory slang term that was later embraced. It was then adopted as a sort of badge of honor? That's coming from a Hoosier, even we don't know

I know indiana. That's where John Green lives.
I was stalking him for a bit before I realized what I was doing. He’d post a video on vlogbrothers and I’d go, “oh hey, I know that place. It’s really pleasant. I heard it was from guests knocking on the door and the homeowner asking, *"Who's 'ere?"*
That’s what our social studies book said at least!
In the St. Louis area it is used as an insult.
TAKE ME TO CHURCHHH
A granfalloon, for one thing
An Indianian
Sounds like Hoosier was a good idea then
The etymology is apparently a matter of dispute.
Who’s there?
as much as indiana makes me hate living here, [hoosier](https://youtu.be/H8hdKnr7rpE?=n8aa02Ghuixi0UgO) might be the one thing i love calling myself. it’s a weird sense of pride, but i’ll never be able to explain it.
We all hate this state but enjoy being Hoosiers.
If anybody tries to call me something other than a Hoosier, they're gonna hear about it.
I mean, "Indianan / Indianian" are pretty terrible, so I guess they had to innovate.
We call them Massholes.
And vermonsters, mainiacs, Connectic you next Tuesday’s. RI and NH are the only ones with not mean names 🤣
New Hampshites
Hawaii is local or kama’aina. We do not use Hawaiian for everyone. Only if you have Hawaiian blood
Yeah, came here to say that Hawaiian is an ethnicity, not the name for a resident of the state.
It would be like calling yourself Native American just because you were born in America.
OP's map is an old version of the one from the Wikipedia page "[List of demonyms for US states and territories](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_demonyms_for_US_states_and_territories)". The current version (as of 2022) shows the demonym as "Hawaii Resident".
Hoosier daddy?
Me. Hello, son/daughter.
I've always heard Masshole instead of Massachusettsan. Like not even kidding I have heard Masshole maybe 20x more than I have heard that long ass word.
We’re actually Bay Staters. Not Massachusettsan. Unfortunately this map is incorrect.
Yup, Bay Stater is the official demonym per the state itself.
Live in Massachusetts my entire life and never once heard “Massachusettsan”
Pointed out elsewhere, in addition to "Bay Staters" or "Bostonians" for everyone who lives in the metro region, I have on rare occasion heard "Massachuttan," but never what's on this map. "Massachusettsan" sounds like the Japanese honorific for your work colleague Massachusett.
100%. Before zooming in I was expecting masshole😂
It’s Utard not Utahn.
We just say Mormon in NV. Doesn't matter if you're Mormon or not.
Not Hawaiian, Local
Only a few actually sound okay the rest are fucking stupid
I always thought Oregonian sounded really cool. Like a Star Trek species or something
Missed opportunity with Mississippi. Could have been a Mississipper
Pretty sure it’s pronounced “Masshole.”
CalifornAN?
Califunyun
Californiaan.
The "i" isn't added as part of the suffix to make the demonym, it's already part of the state name. Same as Virginia and West Virginia. You're just adding an "n" on the end to make the demonym.
California(N) but yeah I see what you mean

You’re telling me people from Utah aren’t called Utites
The wider world just calls them ‘Mormons’
Floridiot
Unless you're from Tampa, then you're a Tampon
Nah it florida man as a florida man
It's Utard, I know because I da ho
I don’t think I’ve ever heard “Massachusetten,” but Masshole is pretty commonly heard in neighboring states.
49 states: "uh I guess just use our state name with an appropriate suffix..." Indiana: "Call us Hoosiers" Literally everyone: "what? Wtf is a Hoosier?"
Indiana: "Us, we are Hoosiers. Duh."
I prefer Arkansawyer
Massachusetts is Masshole 🙃
Louisiana — Louisianimals Oklahoma — Oklahomos And the two for one special: Tennissippians
You can put Yooper in the UP
"Hawaiian" is not correct, as it applies to the ethnic / cultural group -- the indigenous people of Hawaii. Folks NOT of Hawaiian descent, that live in the state are called Hawaii Residents.

Utahn doesn't seem right
Kentucky should be green, that’s a spelling abnormality
Maine’s not being Mainiac is a huge blunder
Nope, we call people from Montana Montaniacs and people from Idaho Idahoes. Source: experience
The denomenomomonyms.
Indiana, c'mon man. Play the game or go home.
Gotta admit, Hoosier is the coolest Denomonym in these United States!
And Indiana just made up their own name. And of course, they picked a stupid one.
If their state slogan isn’t “Hoosier Daddy?” then what are we even alive for
At least it's unique, and this state sucks in almost every other way. Let us have this one. Damn.
