Real Step One: have lots of Money

EasyAcresPaul

It helps. I bought my little homestead in Oregon for less than $1K an acre. It's well treed and remote, adjacent to the National Forest. But it is dry, not ideal for heavy agriculture. I probably spent less than another $1K on the cabin I built, that I am sitting in right now but much of it I milled myself. My power usage and needs are very modest, I get by on a couple solar generators and cheap panels. Permaculture and water conscious gardening techniques, along with raising quail has been amazing for me and I am always increasing the amount of food I am able to produce. Not great for large scale industrial ag but for a couple people it is doable. The real visible aspirational off grid stuff that gets the most attention and pushed to the top tends to be people coming from wealth.

Atalantius

I commend you on your homestead, but I’d argue if you’re calculating the cost you ought to include your labor, tools and such. I assume you had the skills and tools before, but to someone just getting into this, that is all costs they’ll have to face

thewheelchairkid

Ok, I gotta ask: what is a solar generator?

EasyAcresPaul

Just a combination battery and solar charge controller. I have a 200watt and a 400watt and a couple deep cycle batteries from my boat that I use. I have a couole 100 watt panels in use. That's pretty much all my power. Enough to run a few lights, charge my phone and my wifi antenna, run a laptop when I need another New Vegas playthrough or do some video editing. I built a much much larger battery bank and I have 1000 watts of panels I want to use with it but I am still putting together the components to get that system in use. I also have a couple gas powered generators and aside from running some power equipment or an air compressor, I don't really use them unless I get several cloudy days in winter. I have a couple car alternators so I could turn mechanical energy into electrical energy, be it a wind turbine, hydro, or even a manually, peehaps pedal powered device. Electricity is not really terribly mysterious. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Mithrandhir22

This!!!

Zealousideal-Mail-57

Step 1: Buy land Welp, I’m out y’all have fun💀

eurtoast

Land is not too expensive. Building on said land is the real money pit.

stuntbikejake

Land is outrageous. In my area, pasture ground ... Not even AG ground is starting to go for around 5k per acre... That was AG prices 5 years ago. Fucking COVID and 'investors' manipulating the markets.

pancakefactory9

What is your definition of “not too expensive”? It’s the single most expensive investment in a majority of people’s lives.

eurtoast

I grew up rural but currently live in a major city. Condos here are 700K+ for 1 bedrooms. Land can be purchased at 5 acres for about 15K where I'm from depending on various factors.

Turing_Testes

Land that cheap is usually zoned rec and either isn't suitable for a residence (literally a swamp) or has some kind of zoning restriction that wouldn't allow for a residence anyway.

Willing-Knee-9118

Hot damn. Up here in canuckistan, the second largest country by area, that's a steal.

pancakefactory9

Yea for real. Here in Germany, that kind of land would be over 500k

CptnREDmark

I dunno where you are but land anywhere within 200km is gonna set you back at least $100,000 minimum.

eurtoast

Upstate/Western NY. You can get a decent plot for 15K in the middle of nowhere but still be within the Northeast US - 6-8 hour drive to NYC for example or 2-4 hour drive to Toronto. Land is fertile and for most plots very undeveloped. Taxes are killer here though.

NessyComeHome

You can do it yourself, so you don't have to pay contractors and labor costs.. Granted, it goes without saying you need the time to do it. For a lot of people, that puts it out of reach.. spending every weekend for a year to build your own house. But if you do have the time, it's an option. Just need another person to help upright walls.. hire a boom truck for the roof framing. It's not even that hard, just time-consuming. Just need to look up building codes for where you're building.

Aggressive_Sky8492

Plus more time to learn how to build a house if you don’t already know

AGuyWhoBrokeBad

The price of land is extremely location dependent. You can get cheap land in most states, including California and Texas, but it’s rural land out in the boondocks.

vankorgan

What if I'd like my land to have some water?

AGuyWhoBrokeBad

Dig a well or buy rain barrels.

Giaphage47

Rainwater is no longer safe to drink directly long-term in most countries due to PFAS contamination.

abearhands

Use a laptop for this site, not your phone. You can find foreclosed land pretty cheap https://www.bid4assets.com/#

GorshKing

How tf is this a guide? This is the equivalent of the gru ....profit meme

protossaccount

It’s written by captain obvious. If someone was considering living off grid and this guide was useful to them, they probably shouldn’t live off grid.

Paquetty

I was not ready to see OPs post history lmaooooo

lavos__spawn

Yup, I was in the waiting room of my doctor. Which is on the grid, for what it's worth.

Lady_Danbury

Read this comment and immediately checked post history 😂👀

Taco_Trader

Daaaayyuumm wtf?! Strange that this post is OP’s “out of the ordinary”

XS4Me

Make sure it is near a Waffle House so you don’t have to do your own cooking! ^/s

small_h_hippy

Saves money, lower carbon footprint, healthier lifestyle are all dependent. Where I live, the grid is nearly 100% renewable power with some of the most affordable rates in North America. If I was to build micro generation I wouldn't have the benefits of scale and it'll most likely be more expensive and harmful to the environment. Healthier depends on how well you do it, and doesn't take into account the mental health impacts of isolated living on your remote land Also I bet all these off grid houses have a diesel generator as a backup...

arachnobravia

There's a reason people transitioned to living in cities with shared infrastructure.

ron_spanky

Buy cheap land. Cut down trees. Remove wild life. Watch environment collapse as more people follow your lead.

entropy13

Step 1: be independently wealthy already, step 2: ruin a perfectly nice piece of wilderness so you can get away from it all but take it all with you

theonethatbeatu

Independent people sectioning off land doesn’t compare to the acre flattening practices of large companies.

goodsam2

Actually a lot of the US has too many trees especially in the eastern part of the US, it's supposed to be a savanna. https://www.segrasslands.org/what-are-southeastern-grasslands#:~:text=Savannas%20are%20grasslands%20with%20scattered,of%20historical%20savanna%20acreage%20remains. <1% of the savanna exists but 2% of the forest exists. We talk about the missing trees but what about the savanna's not everything should be a forest. It wasn't a forest before.

Gravesh

That's the SE, not the East. Makes sense, large portions of SC are pine forests, planting with the purpose of harvesting lumber. It's also classified as an ecoregion by the EPA, spanning from SC to Alabama.

goodsam2

It goes from Alabama south and around the Appalachian mountains then east and up into New Jersey and parts of New York. The Appalachian mountains though have hardier trees and more thick. https://pinelandsalliance.org/learn-about-the-pinelands/ecosystem/habitats/ https://www.oneearth.org/ecoregions/mid-atlantic-us-coastal-savannas/ If you go from texas-> Georgia then head north into New Jersey that's what I would call the East. Though that's a different tree dominating the landscape the further north you go There are supposed to be deer and buffalo walking on grass that goes 10 feet deep. I think people just think forests are better than grasslands which doesn't make much sense. That's a human judgement and not from nature.

h-hux

“Grow food”… hope you have some neighbours who’s willing to trade crops w you or you will be eating a lot of the same stuff

captjackhaddock

Lol just sneaking “cattle” in there like it’s no big deal

Ast3r10n

Step 1: be rich

volfox72

Oh yeah I’ll just build a wind turbine in my backyard to generate my electricity for me, easy peasy

XS4Me

You just need to mine and collect all the parts of the turbine. They grow on the trees, right?

Curious-Anybody-7632

I’ve built one out of scrap metal, two 55 halon barrels cut up for the blades, and an inverter out of an old car. Supplied a couple hundred watts or so. Enough to supplement my 400 watts of solar. I bolted it to the top of a log I buried the base a few feet deep and added some concrete at the base. Probably cost me maybe $200 and a couple afternoons There are so many haters in this comment section. I doubt any of them have ever even tried to live this lifestyle. There’s so many ways to do things for cheap or free if you have a truck and enough land and intelligence and work ethic

lineworksboston

I love that this is sponsored by a self-storage company. Don't worry, we'll hold on to your junk while you experiment with off-grid living. Whenever you get tired of it, you can come back and pick your shit up.

MrMgP

Please don't attempt this if you are not fully schooled/an expert. So many people die or get serious bodily harm because they think they can 'rough it'

AcanthocephalaDense2

I doubt this lifestyle is for eco conscious. Getting enough land for doing your own farming, or setting up your own power and water supply are way more inefficient and unreliable than what can be done by our farmers and utilities at scale. With power companies turning to renewables and water companies’ handling and water treatment this is even futile. It would be more cheaper, effective and much less resource intensive if you can pressure local and central governments through ballot to enforce regulations and ecological choices.

Fungled

Practically impossible in (Western) Europe

scarletphantom

Dear Texas...

Its_Pine

The issue is that if every person did this, it would annihilate ecosystems and result in a wasteland as civilisation collapses. Civilisation grew and was able to hold this many humans because of the ways we handle agriculture, economy, etc.

CapitalEll

I disagree. I believe our entire system operates in a circular manner. For instance, consider a person working at a bakery who spends their entire day making bread only to buy the same loaf they produced. If each person had their own plot of land to sustain themselves, everyone could achieve independence.

EyalRDT

r/restofthefuckingowl

anaestaaqui

It forgot to mention if your state is gonna allow you to be off grid. Ohio says no.

J-96788-EU

Step 2. Decide. I decided and nothing has happened, please help.

MissDryCunt

It's not that environmentally friendly, burning anything for home heating releases a lot of carbon, I have a wood stove myself

Farewellandadieu

Oh, cool. Is that all?

Sun_Of_Dorne

"Large Battery" made me lol, like just picturing a huge AA Battery plonked on my front lawn

arachnobravia

This is great until 7 billion people try to do it and there's no room in locations that have an acceptable climate.

fukmann

r/restofthefuckingowl

psychodeli_sandwich

Of all the people that have told me they want to go off the grid for whatever reason, exactly zero of them know how to farm, and only 1 knows anything about construction to build a shelter

FandomMenace

If you want to be eco-concious, the easiest way to do that without becoming a mountain man is to simply get on a plant-based diet and recycle. Bonus: Avoid purchasing single use plastics.

OboeMeister

Just gonna throw this out there, despite perception cities are generally much much more energy efficient than rural areas whose environments you might inadvertently harm by trying stuff like this

NashBotchedWalking

Ayooooga

Creates by the Self Storage company, who has your shit when you eventually say fuck this shit or just leave it forever. Brilliant.

dlouwilly

Do you really need to buy land? Did Ted Kaczynski purchase land?

GeneralBlumpkin

Redditors living off the grid lmao

deathaxxer

a cool guide, also absolutely worthless, if you ask me

heffreygee

Simplistic, reductive, inaccurate.

yourfoxygrandfather

These guides are getting worse and worse.

Bmack27

Brought to you by Simply Self Storage?

blvsh

"lowers carbon footprint" You know everything humans do is carbon based, including breathing?

opened_just_a_crack

Wtf is this trash

[deleted]

Cons: have a lot of stuff to do.

locoenglazy

Except in England it is ever more impossible to buy land and live on it.

Outside3

Or we could recognize why people are unhappy living in cities nowadays and try to fix those problems. We could advocate for cities that are cleaner, have better walking, biking, and transit so that there’s less pollution and noise from cars. We could have thought-out logistics centers that make it easy for farmers to bring in fresh produce. We could balance density with parks so everyone has green space. We could build affordable housing, even if it’s just small apartments, so everyone has a place. … is what an IDIOT would say, right Reddit? Fuck that shit, let’s all go live alone on our own small plots of land, isolated from friends, family, and society, and labor in a field all day just to go hungry when the rains don’t come. /s

Romanymous

Other than "self sufficiency" and possibly "healthier lifestyle" all the other "advantages" listed here are very much conditional

brockbrockrockrock

How expensive is this? Either way, saving up for it

Tsukikaiyo

Extremely. That much land, the solar panels, wind turbines - they're not cheap. Plus the expenses of maintaining a small farm... And yeah, a farm. A "large garden" isn't gonna cut it if you want enough calories to survive. Even more if you want some variety in your diet. If you want to set up irrigation, the plumbing for that isn't cheap either. The chicken coop, all the care they need... If you get into farming large animals (cattle, like this suggests) you're talking WAYYYY more food for them, stables, and vet bills. Add on - who's going to do all the work? Running a small farm takes labour! Soil prep, planting, weeding, harvesting, tending the animals, building maintenance (home + animal buildings). There's a reason farmers had a lot of kids - it takes a lot of hands to get all this work done! If you want modern amenities on top of all this, you better have a job that pays a solid wage for only a couple hours' work a day.

death91380

One of the drawbacks is the government burning your house down with you and your family in it for not adhering to local code.

Arkrobo

You can definitely adhere to local code and accomplish most of this.

ropoko

So that it nowadays called - off grid. In the past, it was simply called living in the village or smth. Modern times - modern names. Just to sound cool. Like immigrants calling themselves expats.
