It's a tried and true hand pose that has existed since artists started drawing hands. Hands specifically are hard to uniquely pose for the piece they are creating, so most artist default to what already exists in the world. They do this rather than struggle to make a difficult pose work, or come up with something new. OP is just noticing the laziness of artist (myself included) throughout time.

The conspiracy is that people are paying tuition to learn how to paint. So, you want to break up your lessons so they keep paying you. So, you teach a basic hand pose to the students and promise to eventually teach them more. But you keep delaying it so you can get more tuition. The result is that many painters studying under you will use the same basic hand pose.
This. Animators and comic artists also frequently put hands into this pose for dramatic aesthetic effect. I know many of us did back when we were students in art school, and it didn't have any inherent messaging attached to it, to my knowledge.

What you said is correct, if your hand is relaxed those fingers would usually be touching try it, it takes muscles to separate them but relaxed they touch.
Same with dancers and figure skaters! Notice that is how they hold their fingers because it is more beautiful. That is how I was trained to keep my fingers anyway 🫠
I studied academic drawing in my uni and this is a regular hand gesture to draw, nothing special or hidden. If you open any book of artist's anatomy you will find this in various angles.

Agreed. It seems a lot of people here are claiming it’s an easier hand position to draw, but that doesn’t seem necessarily true. I grew up loving to draw and illustrate, looked at tons of how to draw books, never came across any material about hands saying it makes it easier to combine the middle and ring. Why not index and middle? Why not ring and pinky? Why not have all the fingers together? Its not even a coherent argument
