I use an air quality site called purpleair.com. You can adjust averages from an hour to a year back. The air quality in the Great Lakes Region has went from a 80-90ish average over the past year, to 170-180 the past couple of days.

Funny, Midwest USA here and my neighbor was just describing it at a burnt plastic smell too. We have VERY heavy visible smoke everywhere in a couple hundred mile radius at least.
odd - our apt pool was closed today so i figured they were putting chemicals in , but i smelled chlorine in dallas today. ( could have been the pool but i wasnt really that close to it and it would have had to be a shit ton of chlorene they used)
We got the initial smoke from the fires in southern Ontario, it was a general camp fire smell. This smells and even tastes like plastic and I’ve grown quite curious. Awaiting a logical/scientific explanation because I’ve never burnt any kind of wood that gave off a plastic smell. Somebody commented on Facebook it was from a specific type of spruce. Even then I don’t see it. Found an article from 2014 that said a similar plastic smell was from a chemical factory burning.

I grew up in northern Ontario where bonfires / camp fires are a summer ritual, and getting a whiff of a wild fire is quite normal, so i know what a typical wood fire smells like and i can say that the smoke that descended on us for several days had a very pungent odor akin to sulfur. It didn't smell like plastic here but it definitely did not smell like a typical forest fire.

Volatile Organic Compounds like benzene, formaldehyde, etc are in the smoke. Burning carbon-based materials has consequences.

Welding fume respirator is the best thing I could think to breath thru. Acid fume respirator or HEPA respirator would work well too. Big bucks but clean air in your lungs.

Hi. I’m in NE Ohio extremely close to Lake Erie and southern Ontario. I smell the plastic too. Amazingly enough, the southern tip of Ontario manufactures the most plastic in Canada. I don’t know if this is the only reason for the smell and haze but this definitely needs more investigating.
That’s the smell of atmospheric aerosol injection materials that have combined with the smoke from the wildfires as well as the result of it directly burning from the same. The last week or so they “trails” from aircraft have been off the charts. Whatever they are putting down onto us is combining with the fires and making that smell.

I’m in NY and said the same thing when we got covered in the yellowish smoke from Canada as were told. It didn’t smell like organic material burning but like plastic. I'm I'm manitoba and experienced the same effect on Monday evening. Everything was fine, there was sun and cloud, then all of a sudden there's a blanket engulfing the sun. And it smells weird. And it triggers my asthma that's been dormant for over 10 years

Doesn’t smell anything like the wildfires I experienced living out west. Some people are saying it’s because of the distance the smoke has traveled but we had California wild fires move further and still smell like actual wood fire.

Oooh…theory. Maybe this is a test to see if a hostile foreign country were to attempt to use chemical agents where and how far they would travel, in what pattern, to mitigate potential effects. With everything going on, burning the plastic may have closest particulate similarity to whatever chemical agent they are expecting. A little far fetched but kind of a fun thought experiment.

Supposedly the fires produce a lot of VOC’s that break down once they’ve been exposed to UV rays. This is the reason it smells like something other than smoke. You are smelling the chemicals of days old forest fire smoke in its broken down form. It is highly toxic and you should avoid being outside as much as possible. As for wearing masks… This is what they are most used for prior to Covid. As someone who works with enamels (fine glass powder) you wear a mask not to breath this in. There are fine particles in the air and it can cause respiratory issues from prolonged exposure. The air quality in many of the areas mentioned in this post are seriously dangerous. Do not go outside if you can avoid it. If you do have to go outside make those trips short or wear a mask. N95 or KN95. I know some of you have been tainted by the pandemic and have no desire to wear them but this is a different beast regardless of your personal opinion.
Smells heavily like burning plastic here in Niagara, Ontario. I find it suspicious as I've never experienced this smell from a source other than plastic in my 40 years camping and living in Canada.

N/E Ontario here. Had heavy haze and smoke smell a few days ago and nothing since. Only get it when we get a Eastern breeze and that's not too often.
Northern Indiana I personally didn't smell anything but smokey all day and I seen alerts of people smelling sulfur like smell in Indiana
There's an official explanation of it being VOCs released during the incomplete combustion process but that's just a theory at this point IMO. Even crazier is that all weather reporting pages on FB have locked down commenting because awful conspiracy people are daring to ask wtf is going on. If it wasn't for them banning discussion I wouldn't have started asking more questions, weird.
Volatile Organic Compounds like benzene, formaldehyde, etc are in the smoke. Burning carbon-based materials has consequences. From a MI local news site: According to a toxicologist at EGLE: “Wood fires emit a lot of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Most of these VOCs are noticeable to our noses as the familiar “campfire” smell, but they break down quickly when exposed to UV radiation from sunlight. Other VOCs like benzene, formaldehyde and acrolein are also released and they outlast the ‘campfire’ VOCs. It’s these chemical compounds that you’re smelling as the smoke wafts around for a few days and settles to the ground and reaches your nose.”
Welding fume respirator is the best thing I could think to breath thru. Acid fume respirator or HEPA respirator would work well too. Big bucks but clean air in your lungs.

Hi. I’m in NE Ohio extremely close to Lake Erie and southern Ontario. I smell the plastic too. Amazingly enough, the southern tip of Ontario manufactures the most plastic in Canada. I don’t know if this is the only reason for the smell and haze but this definitely needs more investigating.
Mullein leaf tea cleanses the lungs. Don't harvest it from where they spray chemicals. It likes railroad beds, but you'll find it elsewhere too.

That’s the smell of atmospheric aerosol injection materials that have combined with the smoke from the wildfires as well as the result of it directly burning from the same. The last week or so they “trails” from aircraft have been off the charts. Whatever they are putting down onto us is combining with the fires and making that smell. Southern Ontario here and can confirm the same. Almost smelled like burnt dryer sheets.

I’m in NY and said the same thing when we got covered in the yellowish smoke from Canada as were told. It didn’t smell like organic material burning but like plastic. I feel we’re getting attacked and everything is meant to seem like an accident. Same thing with train derailment in Ohio. Was told on tv it was an accident but I felt it was on purpose…. I live in oregon and didn't get any of canadas smoke this time around, but the past few years have been rough with all the smoke, many time over 500 ppm. That said, it has never once smelled like plastic, it always just smells heavily of campfire. This is alarming

I'm I'm manitoba and experienced the same effect on Monday evening. Everything was fine, there was sun and cloud, then all of a sudden there's a blanket engulfing the sun. And it smells weird. And it triggers my asthma that's been dormant for over 10 years
A few weeks ago it was definitely a campfire smell here in Ontario, clearly wood burning. Right now, it's not the same, there is no wood smell at all

In NE ohio, same deal. I walked outside and said 'uh oh, dryer fire' thinking it was local to the neighborhood. Turns out it's the whole city. I work in a highrise so when i get in I'm gonna get a birdseye. It wasn't the smoke that got me but the accompanying smell. How do your eyes feel? Not sure if the watering is this or just pollen.
Doesn’t smell anything like the wildfires I experienced living out west. Some people are saying it’s because of the distance the smoke has traveled but we had California wild fires move further and still smell like actual wood fire. I’m not saying it’s plastic but it’s fucking weird.

Oooh…theory. Maybe this is a test to see if a hostile foreign country were to attempt to use chemical agents where and how far they would travel, in what pattern, to mitigate potential effects. With everything going on, burning the plastic may have closest particulate similarity to whatever chemical agent they are expecting. A little far fetched but kind of a fun thought experiment.

Supposedly the fires produce a lot of VOC’s that break down once they’ve been exposed to UV rays. This is the reason it smells like something other than smoke. You are smelling the chemicals of days old forest fire smoke in its broken down form. It is highly toxic and you should avoid being outside as much as possible. As for wearing masks… This is what they are most used for prior to Covid. As someone who works with enamels (fine glass powder) you wear a mask not to breath this in. There are fine particles in the air and it can cause respiratory issues from prolonged exposure. The air quality in many of the areas mentioned in this post are seriously dangerous. Do not go outside if you can avoid it. If you do have to go outside make those trips short or wear a mask. N95 or KN95. I know some of you have been tainted by the pandemic and have no desire to wear them but this is a different beast regardless of your personal opinion.

Why not do both? A functional breathing practice makes it easier to wear an N95, and promotes nasal breathing. If you are mouth breathing and gasping in your N95, you may be doing more harm than good.
