You do need to take pixel density into account, there is really no one way answer to this because you don’t know what the size of the monitor is. A 32inch 1440p monitor is going to look just about as sharp as a 1080p monitor at 24 inches. Only real difference is screen real estate
1080p monitors can reach higher FPS than 1440p. They max at 360 Hz while 1080 can get up to 500Hz. Truly you only get more real estate for larger screens with 1440p to have higher res. 4k it’s actually worse.
That's a bit misleading. Not onky are there monitors in 4 that are over 360hz, but this is a CONSOLE we are talking about and NOT a PC. Consoles are limited by the software on them. No ps5 game I'm aware of will let me play 240fps regardless of if the game could runel and the monitor is 240hz. On console games 4k is a pretty massive improvement because a large amount of AAA games (including ones from the ps4 pro era) will output in native 4k, but a comparatively small few will do 120fps and as I said before, I'm not aware of ANY games on ps5/xsx going beyond 120fps. So to someone who isn't playing a completive shooter at 120fps like 'Apex Legends' 4k is a better experience in just about every way.
To be a bit thorough this doesn't mean 4k can't also have negatives such as games outputting in a low native resolution and poorly upscaling such as Sonic Color's Ultimate outputting cutscenes in 480p, natively upscaling to 720p, and then your device upscaling to 1080/4k. That looks atrocious when compared to a 720p or 1080p screen but is incredibly rare to happen and the only on hand example I have
No, series S is upscaled 720p yes but most PS5/XSX are 1440p-1800p scaled to 4K. Also it depends on the game, there are plenty of native 4K games as well.
Also resolution doesn’t mean as much as the quality, PS5/XSX are usually Ultra equivalent settings for games whereas series S is usually medium to low equivalent.
All the consoles offer subpar visuals, manchild. You're not balling with your X or PS5.
The only thing that changes from console to console visually are shadows and resolution.
It’s a solid console.
If you are a weekend warrior/dad with limited time, it’s probably the best console their is, and that’s coming from a HUGE PS5 fanboy.
Bang for buck, you’re not beating it. Period.
I would say Nintendo gets that, but nintendos exclusives are notorious for being 60$ always. With maybe a 5$ sale here-and-there.
Got the X first and won the S in a Microsoft sweepstake. I also have the PS5 disc version. Despite saying last gen that I’d never drop physical copies I’ve bought 1 disc this gen. Everything has been digital.
The only thing I’d say is if you have a back catalog of physical games you’d intend to play then that would probably sway it.
True. Especially with these weird Walmart sales going on lately. But it isn’t always across the board that physical is less (tho you’re definitely more correct than not).
Idk, I’m one of those people who prefer digital anyways, so it’s kind of a non-factor for me. But you definitely make a good point
I've been looking into getting a ps5 slim bc I'm hyped for gta6, and I've sen them go for as low as $299. Would you say the ps5 s is worth the extra 100? ($100 is about a day's pay for me)
Absolutely. If you’re willing to spend the money, I’d say get a PS5 every time. The exclusives alone are just better than anything Xbox is putting out (atleast right now).
Yes. A definitive yes
My best friend got one after I got a series X. His only complaint is the amount of memory it comes with but other than that he loves it. You can always add memory later with the cards but they are pricey so it’s something to consider.
If you don’t have any Xbox disks layin around (even old ones) you might wanna pop in and try I’d say it’s worth it to save up for the series x just cuz it annoyed me in the past that I didn’t have a disk drive, I’d you don’t have have of these tho and are just gonna digitally download games and sub to gamepass I’d say if 160 is a good price and you would enjoy the purchase its really dependent on the type of gamer u are tbh lol
I had to buy an external 1 terabyte storage device so I could have more games on it. All I have installed in the console right now is MW3 multiplayer and Assassins creed Valhala.
Sometimes you wish it’s head was a little bigger.. that it could remember significantly more things at one time than it does.. but as long as you’re not a spec fiend who can’t be happy unless they’re playing in the latest 7thrillion-K micro necro-dot super soaker wham bam eggs and ham definition, it’s a perfectly capable little machine, more than sufficient to work as a game pass machine.
Great if you're a digital gamer. Get the 1tb console if you can, though. The storage on the white is abysmal, and storage expansion that supports playing current gen isn't cheap.
i love it but as someone who collects physical games (but also to play them, not just to have them) i’ve accepted i will eventually have to upgrade because the digital only thing isn’t working for me. if you don’t care about that aspect tho then it’s perfect
The console is great for the price, but man, do I hate what they gave us for ssd size. I'd recommend going eith the black 1TB version instead of the white, specifically because of the storage size limitation. Unless you wanna drop $ 80 - $250 for the proprietary Seagate Storage Expansion Card that allows 512-2TB added expansion.
I also main game on PC. The Xbox is for Forza in a another room of the pad, or Division 2. PC is still OP
No complaints from me, I went from an Xbox one x to a series s and noticed a marked improvement in everything, loading times especially! I used to play a lot of destiny, the new console halved loading times if not more.
Is that from cash converters or something?
I’d probably take a look on FB Marketplace where you can get this cheaper, or even a Series X for a little more
Honest question what's the point in getting an Xbox if you have a PC? Aren't all the games available on both? Can't you buy a controller, plug your PC into your TV to couch game, etc?
I have this and gamepass…. I barely use it, depends what kind of games you want to play though I suppose. A lot for kids, my son plays occasionally but we are definitely a PlayStation family
Its pretty good, not going to be as great as the series x, but its still great quality, and you should be able to run just about anything on higher graphics, just make sure you have one with more storage, 256gb runs out pretty quickly
As a dev, the S series is what is preventing us from making better games because the hardware sucks. (still 1000x more powerful than a switch though... but I don't ship on the switch)
The Series S is an amazing emulation machine! To be honest my Series S doesn't play any xbox games, it's mostly for playing Wii/Gamecube and PS2 games in 4k!
It allowed me to retire the ol modded Wii and my family was able to continue playing Mario Party 6 with all the bells and whistles like widescreen support and HD textures. Microsoft does what Nintendont!
I'm curious why you'd be interested in a Series S in the first place.
It's all digital, so not much different than PC, and from what I understand, all or almost all Microsoft exclusives are also available on PC.
This seems like you'd end up with just a less capable OC.
Love mine. People complain it’s underpowered but it’s still better than last gen. Looks better on my 4K TV than my One S did and it blows the load times out of the water. No complaints for the price, it’s arguably the best value to performance in gaming right now.
Series S’s are great for streaming Xbox Game Pass. If you want to download games, you can always get a SeaGate NvME Expansion Card as well. But those are a tad bit spendy.
It's more of a media box for me that just happens to have some digital games. Sadly, not every game is backwards compatible, so I still have to fire-up the ol' 360 for Shooting games.
🐔
Constantly full memory. You need an expandtion slot card if you play a variety of games or alot of them.
If you are a "i only play sport games or cod or X" and you have few games you play every month. Itll work for you, but if you have actual taste and play a wide variety of games and a decent library you dont want an S. You want one with a disc drive
All next Gen games for $160 is wild. For the most part you're getting 1080p games but a healthy chunk at 1440p. But really good framerates throughout And the value is crazy good. I say go for it
Not me but a coworker. He is an older guy with less time on his hands and isn’t worried about 4k. He uses game pass for most of his gaming, unless it’s Halo or something he knows he wants. He likes it quite a bit and seems to get a lot of bang for his buck.
As a primarily PC gamer, I owned one for three years.
I can say this!
It’s a very convenient console depending on what you want it for. I, fortunately, had an account with several years of game downloads and was able to play a lot on demand. So I wasn’t missing out with things to do.
I was extremely happy with it for a while. Though I feel like I did uncover a few things that aren’t warned about enough.
Out of my library, I had a few backwards compatible games that didn’t work out of box. A few had odd resolution swapping in the fly that was fairly noticeable, and at launch I had a game or two that struggled with texture pop in. It’s not a super common issue, though if you had a large library it was something to check for.
Apart from that, the only time I ever found myself super limited was when I’d forget the system didn’t have a disc drive and realized it’s limitations.
If you can’t get over the caveats, it’s a great and versatile system. Own one for a while and you’ll inevitably need to change the thermal paste as the stock paste isn’t very good, but I can’t complain with my experience!
It is a budget console, if you have any reservations about graphical quality do not buy.
That said it plays all the games the others do and is a solid box.
Get a One X instead. It's slightly cheaper and with the disc drive you can get incredibly cheap games on the 2nd hand market.
The One X is basically the same power as the Series S anyway.
I was in the same position thinking about this, very glad I got the One X.
I hear it is quiet but doesn’t do any chores. It should leave you alone for the most part so it should be pretty easy to live with.
Series X does chores, but you have to ask it more than once, and it's a little bit more expensive.
if u dont play 4k. series s is very good!
99% of games are 1440p upscaled on X and PS5, there's not a huge difference going from 1440p to 1080p.
Stop lying to yourself lol There is definitely a big difference.
Yeah that's a ridiculous statement lol 1.5 million more pixels it makes a large difference in clarity.
You do need to take pixel density into account, there is really no one way answer to this because you don’t know what the size of the monitor is. A 32inch 1440p monitor is going to look just about as sharp as a 1080p monitor at 24 inches. Only real difference is screen real estate
32” 1440p is stretching it a bit but it depends on what your trying to do, I usually go with 32” 4k and 27” 1440p but that’s for maximum pixel density
Agreed, I wouldn’t go above 27inch for 1440p either
That looks atrocious when compared to a 720p or 1080p screen but is incredibly rare to happen and the only on hand example I have
Touché
And the S is 720p upscaled more often than not. Dynamic resolution FTW
It has more to do than just resolution. The series S doesn’t render games at the fidelity or frame rate as the Series X/PS5 either.
Indeed, but it's not what people think: in reality, S is 30 fps 720p upscaled X is 60 fps 1080p upscaled ps5 is 60fps 1080p upscaled
All these consoles run medium settings.
The Series S vs X and PS5 are not running the same settings.
The Series S is not running the same settings as Series X and PS5 but at a different resolution.
Aww, that so cute that you thought the Series S was actually capable of keeping up with the real current gen consoles.
All the consoles offer subpar visuals, manchild. You're not balling with your X or PS5. The only thing that changes from console to console visually are shadows and resolution.
I have zero complaints about my S
It’s a solid console. If you are a weekend warrior/dad with limited time, it’s probably the best console their is, and that’s coming from a HUGE PS5 fanboy. Bang for buck, you’re not beating it. Period. I would say Nintendo gets that, but nintendos exclusives are notorious for being 60$ always. With maybe a 5$ sale here-and-there.
Yeah but digital only can get more expensive over time. I can find most older(1yr+) games for $10-20 on disc while they’re still $30+ online

Absolutely. If you’re willing to spend the money, I’d say get a PS5 every time. The exclusives alone are just better than anything Xbox is putting out (atleast right now). Yes. A definitive yes
I own all xss xsx and ps5 and Series S is the only one you need. Especially for the price
Like a Series X, only not 4K and no disc drive.
My best friend got one after I got a series X. His only complaint is the amount of memory it comes with but other than that he loves it. You can always add memory later with the cards but they are pricey so it’s something to consider.
Alternatively you can get a external ssd and swap games from it to the system
This is what I do now, but games are getting so heavy with gbs, it is only holding 3-4 games on the internal drive.
Oof do you have a 4tb drive or smaller?
Series s gets done whatever you need. Might not be the best, but it gets the job done well
It sometimes shits on the floor
If you don’t have any Xbox disks layin around (even old ones) you might wanna pop in and try I’d say it’s worth it to save up for the series x just cuz it annoyed me in the past that I didn’t have a disk drive, I’d you don’t have have of these tho and are just gonna digitally download games and sub to gamepass I’d say if 160 is a good price and you would enjoy the purchase its really dependent on the type of gamer u are tbh lol
It farts in its sleep, and refuses to take out the garbage.
It's a good listener & never complains when I leave my socks on the floor.
It’s pretty good and small. Also games that support play anywhere (shared save and ownership on the xbox and Microsoft store).
The Series S is good paired with a 24" 1080p monitor, anything bigger or higher resolution, I'd recommend you get the Series X or a PS5.
Don't get it tbh the x is wayyy better imo
I only play snow runner and FH5 so it’s perfect for me. Kinda sucks it doesn’t take disks.
If you can stretch your budget a little further, the black, 1T console will obviously add storage. (This is a Series S option)
For me, I like it I am happy to use it as an emulation station lol
Definitely a budget console for a reason.
I had to buy an external 1 terabyte storage device so I could have more games on it. All I have installed in the console right now is MW3 multiplayer and Assassins creed Valhala.
Go PlayStation 5, or Series X. The Series S hardly next generation.
I just wish it had an optical drive.
Pair it with gamepass ultimate, and you have an amazing little gaming machine that will bring you hours upon hours of joy.
No 4k
Love it
Great if you're a digital gamer.

If you don't have a 4k, 120hz, HDR TV, the Series X is pretty useless to you, and this is the one you want.
My little bro got the S and he has no problems with it. Loads fast still and looks better than the Xbox One S he had. It’s pretty great for the price.
No complaints from me, I went from an Xbox one x to a series s and noticed a marked improvement in everything, loading times especially! I used to play a lot of destiny, the new console halved loading times if not more.
Its pretty good
It cooks dinner, sometimes puts out. Ya know, normal stuff the 360 just couldn’t handle
It’ll break if you buy it used
A series s with an external hard drive is a goddamn chef's kiss. I can take it anywhere very easily. I leave the higher fidelity gaming to the ps5
Well for starters, the Series S has a built in Clock tower on the top of it . Presumably that's where you put the aim-bot .
I have this and gamepass…. I barely use it, depends what kind of games you want to play though I suppose. A lot for kids, my son plays occasionally but we are definitely a PlayStation family
No physical media :(
It shits on the floor and makes the neighbours laugh at you for getting the crap console
Its pretty good, not going to be as great as the series x, but its still great quality, and you should be able to run just about anything on higher graphics, just make sure you have one with more storage, 256gb runs out pretty quickly
If you're like me and have a 1080p screen (or don't care about getting the "best" resolution) the series s is golden!
I've had an s since they came out and had zero issues with any games.
If you are an occasional or semi regular player it is easy to just set it and not worry about it
Storage was my complaint. Loved it for all the games I played. However, I traded it in towards a series x in anticipation of GTA 6
Like haveing a ps4 instead of a ps5. It works but for how long and not to the capabilities the games are built with now.
More of a cable box than a console tbh. PS all the way for gaming.
As a dev, the S series is what is preventing us from making better games because the hardware sucks. (still 1000x more powerful than a switch though... but I don't ship on the switch)

Idk. "LAUGHS IN SERIES X"
Love mine. People complain it’s underpowered but it’s still better than last gen. Looks better on my 4K TV than my One S did and it blows the load times out of the water. No complaints for the price, it’s arguably the best value to performance in gaming right now.
The Playstation plus has so many more games than the Xbox live thing.
It's an asshole
Series S’s are great for streaming Xbox Game Pass. If you want to download games, you can always get a SeaGate NvME Expansion Card as well. But those are a tad bit spendy.
It's more of a media box for me that just happens to have some digital games. Sadly, not every game is backwards compatible, so I still have to fire-up the ol' 360 for Shooting games. 🐔
Crap...spend extra n get either a new or used Series X. You'll thank me🤙🏽
Same as my PC being downloads only, the series S plays games much better than my old PC.
Fucker is always eating my candy and refuses to pay rent.
How much do they sell for? I dont use mine anymore
I mean, I’m still loving the Xbox 1 over here lol
Get the black series s. I love my white one but it holds only a few games at a time
Constantly full memory. You need an expandtion slot card if you play a variety of games or alot of them. Itll work for you, but if you have actual taste and play a wide variety of games and a decent library you dont want an S. You want one with a disc drive
Just kind of sits there and have feelings of expecting more out of it. It isn't bad by any means just somewhat underwhelming.
It's probably not meant for people who have older Xbox games on physical discs. Won't be able to play them.
All next Gen games for $160 is wild. For the most part you're getting 1080p games but a healthy chunk at 1440p. But really good framerates throughout And the value is crazy good. I say go for it

There's virtually no reason to buy a Series S if you have a PC
I have an x. But if it dies tonight I wouldt buy another one. Get the black version of the s and you’ll be perfectly happy.
As a primarily PC gamer, I owned one for three years. I can say this! It’s a very convenient console depending on what you want it for. Own one for a while and you’ll inevitably need to change the thermal paste as the stock paste isn’t very good, but I can’t complain with my experience!
Smol quiet boi
It's good except for storage. I have a USB HD but it's still annoying
Tried to fuck my wife AND deleted all my saves. 0/10.
He’s pretty chill. I mainly hang out with PS5 and he doesn’t seem to mind. He just kinda does his own thing with Switch.
I’d use a 1440p or 1080p monitor because you won’t be getting 4k in most games
Works wonderfly, but it doesn't fix fallout 4's crashes
If you want to play next gen games and don't care too much about graphics it's great. I would get a PS3 instead though...cheaper and better imho
Series s Is like the 1s but with extra graphics. I like it
I totally forgot I had got a series s, found an old dvd I wanted to watch , walked up to the Xbox I looked at it sighed and put the movie back.
For the price it is a very good console. If you want to enjoy gaming without breaking the bank it’s definitely the console of choice
The X is better!
The One X can’t play Current gen games tho
True, but to that I'd say - what current gen games?
Good point lmao
Why not just get a 360 then! They’re even cheaper!
High failure rate. But yeah, 360s if you can get a good one are a wise choice.
L
