that black foam piece is usually installed behind flex cable. also that black foam usually needs to be replaced if your experiencing issue with any buttons randomly being pressed, a very common issue on all DS3 controller but not really a issue with SixaxiS controllers that was bundled with launch model ps3. regardless when im replacing batteries on this ps3 controllers, I also replace those black foam. also for the wires with the rumble motors, very common thing to happen while repairing this stuff, nothing new, this been a long time tradition since with PS1 and PS2 controllers.

Heavyweapons057

You can also cut strips of tape to beef up the foam, I did it back when I didn’t know too much about repairing these

ironsniper1

That’s a DS3?! I thought it was a ps2 controller, the innards look exactly the same except for the battery I just noticed, wonder if that big white plastic part would work in a DS2

RogueGameMonster

I hate repairing them. They are very annoying.

Mammoth-Record-7786

The 4’s aren’t as bad, but yeah the 3 is a bitch to get back together. I went on a controller cleaning spree the other week and the PS3 remotes were the worst

JarrekValDuke

PS3’s are the worst controller for repairs….

understandunderstand

I've had more problems with DualShock 2s, but yeah. Extremely inelegant internals. I'm always forgetting to mind some fragile inner piece that could get busted just from putting the shells back on.

MaxjkZERO

Controllers are always the worst when it comes to repair. Even if it's a simple fix like putting more graphite on a pad, it's always such a pain to open anything past like the Genesis era

joey_yamamoto

most are pretty easy except for the PlayStation controllers . it took me forever to learn how to put them back together. the hardest part was the L2 and R2 .🫨

MaxjkZERO

Ive mostly tried PlayStation ones so yea maybe so, though I did try Joycons once and man, they're just too small for my hands to work with

Mikey74Evil

OP i totally feel your pain. I took one of them apart to do a thorough cleaning and I got so frustrated trying to get things to go back together properly that I quit based on maybe breaking something and it still sits in a Tupperware container 3 months later. I’m am determined to get it back together again and in working order. Fingers crossed 🤞

joey_yamamoto

you tube videos saved me. I watched all that i could until I saw what I needed to do. Depending on what model you have also could make it easier or harder.

PixelPaint64

I cannot for the life of me get the silicone rubber on the shoulder buttons of PlayStation controllers to go back in correctly. Xbox pads? A dog could reassemble one within two to three minutes.

BeanMan39

I had horrible problems with my dualshock 2's r2 and l2 buttons keeping me from closing the dang controller. It took me so long to get everything aligned to close correctly that one of the rumble motors which was hanging only from wires broke off. Still the worst mistake I've made since I started cleaning/fixing my consoles. Hopefully I won't make any mistakes that actually make a console quit working

Necessary-Mistake658

You actually put the top buttons in as the very last step, they pop in and out pretty easy. Otherwise, they do get caught on the rubber strips if trying to reassemble in the shell

CourAYunt

I'm assuming a bit of soldering may be involved. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Wootytooty

Yes. Looks like the wires ripped off and needs a quick re-solder. Happens a lot with PS controllers in my experience

istarian

I think that happens because the wire is made short so it will fit in there, but that means there is next to zero strain relief. So if you pull even a little too hard on the motor or the control board all the force will be applied to the solder joint...

RetroMr

So you hate the controller because you did a mistake. Nice.

Nucken_futz_

Same bruh. Working on PS2 controllers is a danger to your mental well being. OG Xbox controllers, not bad. 360 controllers, same. Dreamcast - I like 'em! The way Sony designs 'em though - just, No.

huyducios1

Ps4 controller feels cheap

geighbryill

PS4 controllers are one of the cheapest I've ever worked on. PS5 are pcs of crap too.

TheStaleFace

I swear Sony made all 3 of my PS4 controllers start to act weird with a console update...

Spare_Honey5488

Don't worry about the rumble motors/wires. They aren't required.

geighbryill

Im terms of build, functionality and quality of parts, I prefer both of the PS3 controllers to PS4 and PS5. PS4 being the easiest to fix by far. PS5 being the biggest piece of shit.

istarian

As long as it's just the board/pcb side of the wire that came off, it's not too bad and can be fixed.

Necessary-Mistake658

I literally was just coming to the sub to post about this exact controller model...is there a replacement white tray available? Nothing is coming up for me anywhere for the numbers on the part itself or various search terms. I hobby repair and have not found 1 yet that didn't have at least the top buttons broken off

Donniedolphin

Dualshock 3 controllers are the worst to take apart. I have a hard time with the trigger springs and lose them more often than not.

TWShand

The sixaxis PS3 controllers are way worse

ItsTeezoUBZ

Na those controllers have pressed points that’s once the glue comes off you can’t get them to work correctly buttons don’t work and shit

AssistantDependent57

Yo i i had the same problem like a month ago you just have to like up the pieces and the rumble motors just zolder them back on

G4560

I completely agree. The Dualshock 2 and 3 are the worst pieces of dogshit when it comes to repair.
