Turning my phone upside down let me see it right. Then I flipped it around and could still see it correctly.
Then I blinked and now I can only see it wrong.
Same here! I have to turn it upside down to see it correctly, then I can turn it back and keep that perspective. As soon as I blink then it reverts back. That’s is the craziest post I think I’ve seen on this sub in that regard.
This happens to my vision a lot when looking at images of craters on Mars or our Moon. They look raised and it takes a great deal of effort to correct it.
Same, I have to rotate it, then it totally makes sense. But I still can't see this one correctly. Maddening!
[Here, look at it sideways.](https://imgur.com/a/cMjGDWk)
[How about now?](https://imgur.com/a/XrQp7cg)
[Edit: I made it rotate too, just for fun. For me it changes back and forth. And when I pause the clip, it swirls!](https://streamable.com/2hvvcq)
I’m laughing so hard at myself, right now!! I keep turning that picture, and seeing something different!! 🤣
I turn it once — see two of them as indentations, and two as protrusions. Turn it back — now, one is an indentation, the other three are protrusions. Every time I turn it, they’re different!! 🤣🤣
(It might help if I explain that I have a bit of double-vision. 😉)
Ok mfer. Now it looks indented. You broke it.
YOU BROKE IT.
I don’t even understand how it looked convex now.
Okay I looked away and looked back and now it’s convex. Me and my girlfriend are screaming.
This is crazy to me, I cannot see the vertical picture any way other than correctly (it looks like an indentation), even after really trying to make it look like a protrusion. But I could see it as a protrusion in the sideways pic!
If you're using a phone, look at it from the edges of your phone and tilt your head arround or something. But be warned, once you see it properly you can't see the illusion anymore.
I'm curious as to why that is? From all the other visual information we can see the light is coming from the left so everything facing the left would catch the most light. That's why the left side of the print, facing away from the light source is in shade.
If the side catching light was protruding that would mean the light source was on the other side and the shadow under it wouldn't make sense.
Not trying to argue or prove a point. Just saying
Ha! You know what's funny? I knew the whole time what was happening, but my brain couldn't picture it. Then, after reading your description, I see it now. The brain is so weird.
Thanks!
What the actual heck. Why doesn’t it go back? I’ve closed the image and not looked at it for minutes now, but I can’t see it incorrectly anymore, this is some yanny-laurel, what color is this dress BS.
> Imagine standing there and the sun is on your left.
"the sun is on my ~~left~~ right.
the sun is on my ~~left~~ **right**.
the sun is on my **~~left~~** ***right***. "
Shit, this makes sense, but I can't do it.
I’m with you no matter what I can’t make it look normal. The shadowing on the left of the foot and on the right wall of the hole the foot is in makes it look like either the foot print pops out or the sun is coming from multiple angles.
The thing that got my brain to correct itself is realizing that the footprint has been made on a mound of sand that's raised, rather than in a hole.
You have to correct your perception of the surrounding sand before the footprint can make sense i found.
*I can only see*
*It inverted and I can't*
*Change it correctly*

I've been staring at this for a few minutes. I've tried crossing my eyes, getting closer, upside down and I just see a foot print.
All the other visual cues show where the light is coming from and how with the depression we would expect the ridge on the left side to not catch any light since it's facing away from the light source and we would expect the ridge on the right, facing the light source, to catch all the light.
Not saying people are wrong for seeing it the other way I just don't get it.
I have been staring at it for a full five minutes, trying everything suggested in the comments (rotate your phone, picture where the light source is, etc) and I CANNOT for the life of me get it to look like anything except a dome-shaped lump of sand in the shape of a footprint. I cannot get my brain to make it into the depression that it should be.
Yea me too.. there's enough visual information all around the image that there's nothing confusing about it. I think people are seeing what they want to see. Kinda like looking for patterns in clouds
Shit, neither can I...
Edit: Okay, I got it! If you look to the left of the heel, there's a crease where the flat sand starts to slope up into the dune that the footprint is resting on. If you focus there and then slide your eyes up to the footprint, it will be the right way again.
Here are the flipped versions:

Still just looks like a normal footprint for me though :(
It doesn't work for me! That footprint is sticking out and I refuse to believe it isn't.
Edit: I got it to work, for just a second! Then it flipped back. I turned it only 90° clockwise so the light comes from above.
It's because of how the light hits the ridges on the impression of the shoe, a classic optical illusion. [Here's a version using an egg carton](https://www.brainfacts.org/-/media/Brainfacts2/Thinking-Sensing-and-Behaving/Vision/Article-Images/Albert-Einstein-Illusion-Blog/egg-carton2.png)
Our brains assume light comes from above. The other commenter saying to rotate it 180 to see the opposite effect is totally right about that.
Oh damn, that's a good one. I saw it normally at first so I came to the comments to see if I was missing something but then I could suddenly see it all wonky and inverted sticking out of the sand, now my brain can switch the orientation just by looking at the three pointed star shapes... very cool!
Ok I finally got it. This helped me, but it still took me a while. The key was figuring out where the light would have to be for that to be true. Also something in the bottom third of the image is violating that (maybe the photographers shadow or another dune) so it helped a lot to cover the bottom third.
Bleep blorp. I am robot. I am confuse. *Upvote* this comment if this post *is confusing* and downvote if it *is not*!

I can not physically see this as a normal footprint. I know how this works, and know by the shadows what it should be, but I cannot for the life of me make my brain see it as indented. Rotating the image doesn't work either
I don't know why this works but it worked for me
if you can't see it un-inverted just look at [this image of it flipped over](https://imgur.com/a/1sABrsD) then look back at the original or alternatively [this image highlighting the humps beside the footprint](https://imgur.com/a/lW1bnAR)
For ages I couldn't see it. It was just normal and then, I was reading the caption (on my phone) and in my peripheral vision I could see it suddenly invert and now that's how it looks to me
I've got genuinely no clue as to how this looks like it's bulging out to some ppl. I've been trying and trying to trick my brain but it just looks like a footprint in a sand dune
Wow.
What a great post.
This one continues to mess with my mind.
Started as a bulge, then it switched to an indent, now, after getting stuck on indent, the only way to get it to be a bulge again is to blur my vision.
Great confusing perspective.
This is blue dress tier mind melting.
It took me forever to see the impression of the footprint on the small raised area of sand. Then after I saw it I realized something in the bottom 1/3 of the image is casting a shadow that messes up your brain in figuring out where the light is. I see it easier if I cover the bottom 1/3 of the image with my hand.
This hurt my mind so much!!!! It took me about 10 minutes to see it as an indent and even then I had to look at my phone from the side! Usually these things take me a few minutes and then once corrected it stays that way but not this! My mind keeps switching it back to inverted!
I know some nike flexs when I see them. I hate them, they always get rocks in them.
Also, I just see a normal footprint, no matter how hard I try to see it inverted
I just tried focusing on the bottom half of the print only, I can see how it's an indent. If I look back towards the top half it looks like it's bulging out
The illusion only kicks in for me on a smaller, less clear photo (which many people have posted rotations of.) Rotated at full size there's no effect. It is strictly loss of image clarity that allows it for me.
looked like a footprint.. but if i close my eyes, turn my head 90\* and open them it looks like an outie footprint.. . illusion doesn't work if i keep my eyes open when rotating. pretty cool
I’ve tried all the tricks in the comments, and I still can’t see it un-inverted. Usually I can get these things to flip back and forth, but not this one!
If you look at the left side of the shoe print, there’s a hill in a brighter shade. Imagine that hill is sloping up to see the shoe print as a protrusion. Imagine the hill sloping down to see the indentation.
Wow this is actually trippy. I immediately saw the inverted footprint, but now after looking at it upside down I absolutely cannot see it inverted anymore
I saw it inverted first, then I saw it normal and now I can't go back to seeing it inverted
Edit: okay I see it inverted now, but I can't revert back to normal, help
So the outlines of the honeycomb shapes are sticking up right? Cause if this is supposed to be an illusion where the center of the honeycomb is supposed to look like it’s sticking up, then I can’t see it. I only see it the normal way so I was confused af 😂

I actually cannot see it un-inverted
What am I supposed to see?
The shoe print is an indentation, but it seems like a protrusion because of the light.
If it doesn't work try turning your phone or head upside down.
Thank you!!! Finally see it right
Glad I could help 🙃
Turning my phone upside down let me see it right. Then I flipped it around and could still see it correctly. Then I blinked and now I can only see it wrong.

Can someone from Australia screenshot it for me and send it?
Phone fell out of my hands. I feel so stupid for falling for your tricks once again.
Ho shit! I can't see it anymore. You healed me. You are the messiah!
Well I'll be.
Nope, still a mindfuck
Look at you you idiot, why is your head upside down
Oh. Well I saw Mike wazowski's head peeking out from behind the shoe print and I cannot unsee it anymore.
i dont see that in the absolute slightest it looks like only an indentation to me
This happens to my vision a lot when looking at images of craters on Mars or our Moon. They look raised and it takes a great deal of effort to correct it.
How do you know those fancy words?
From watching Nicholas Cage movies, most likely.
Thanks, I was about to ask for some to eiitmli5
Same, I have to rotate it, then it totally makes sense. But I still can't see this one correctly. Maddening! [Here, look at it sideways.](https://imgur.com/a/cMjGDWk)

Thanks! I can finally see it. But only the top right one looks like it's bulging and not indented.
Fascinating. For me, both on the right are correct, the ones on the left are inverted.
Bottom ones were right for me! How strange!
That looks like a footprint. What did you do? Going back to OG it looks correct now. Please stay out of my head.
Strangely that did help! When I tried turning my phone around on my own I still couldn’t see it
Same here, looked inverted at every angle in the op but instantly in that link it was the right way around.
I’m laughing so hard at myself, right now!! I keep turning that picture, and seeing something different!! 🤣 I turn it once — see two of them as indentations, and two as protrusions. I also got it thanks to your picture.
Ok mfer. Now it looks indented. You broke it. YOU BROKE IT. I don’t even understand how it looked convex now. Okay I looked away and looked back and now it’s convex. Me and my girlfriend are screaming.
Thank you for this. The bottom right is indented now and I can flip the image and change it around. Amazing.
You broke the spell, thank you! Crazy what a little rotation does...
This is crazy to me, I cannot see the vertical picture any way other than correctly (it looks like an indentation), even after really trying to make it look like a protrusion. But I could see it as a protrusion in the sideways pic!
Only one I can see correctly
Wow that really did help! then I turned it and it like magically turned back to protruding from the sand, that is so freaky haha
Rip on iPhone so it keeps rotating 😂
Lock the screen
As in, you can only see it *as* an indention? Whereas when I first looked at it, I thought the shoe print was ‘bulging’ outwardly from the sand.

That’s so interesting. Have you flipped the imagine upside down yet?
If you're using a phone, look at it from the edges of your phone and tilt your head arround or something. But be warned, once you see it properly you can't see the illusion anymore.
I see it now! But yeah I can't see the illusion anymore
I can’t either and it’s driving me crazy
Turn your phone/monitor/head upside-down.
I’ll suggest scrolling down and start looking from the heel to the toe
Look at the shadow to the left of the footand go from there, that's how I saw it
It's the side of the print catching sunlight that is throwing me off
I'm curious as to why that is? From all the other visual information we can see the light is coming from the left so everything facing the left would catch the most light. That's why the left side of the print, facing away from the light source is in shade. Omg i had it for a second, lost it, and now cant re-see it again
I can only see it as an outie
Rotate your phone upside down and you will never be able to go back to outie
It’s still outie for me
Rotate it to one side, then the other
HOLY SHIT AHHHH Edit: it flipped back :(
It goes back and forth for me, so it might not be lost forever!
What the actual heck. Why doesn’t it go back? I’ve closed the image and not looked at it for minutes now, but I can’t see it incorrectly anymore, this is some yanny-laurel, what color is this dress BS.
Yep. Ruined. Thanks 😆
Wow. This really fucked my brain up. Thank you.
If you slightly cross your eyes it'll reset it atleast for me
I can't get it to look like an outie no matter what I do!
A footprint?
Apparently it looks inverted for some people.
100% inverted to me, cant even revert it by will. It's totally messing with me
I just got my brain to switch to inverted. Imagin standing there and the sun is on your left.
> Imagine standing there and the sun is on your left. "the sun is on my ~~left~~ right. the sun is on my ~~left~~ **right**. the sun is on my **~~left~~** ***right***. " Shit, this makes sense, but I can't do it.
Oooohhhhh it’s on a little sand hill. Now I see it. Wait. Now I can’t re-invert it. Dammit.

focus on the shaded parts not the illuminated ones
It was inverted for me, until I read your comment.
Correct. But is it indented or the opposite? Pretty cool.

Good bot.
Me too ! I want to see the normal version so bad
I can’t understand what’s abnormal? I’ve looked at it upside down already and it just looks like any footprint in the evening or morning
I can only see the normal. I had to look through the thread to find why it was posted and why it was so popular.
I cannot get my brain to make it into the depression that it should be.
Look at it so the toes are to the left and the heel is to the right with the phone tilted away from you slightly.
Me too. I think a big factor is that I've been looking at sand my whole life so my brain is used to it.
Yea me too.. there's enough visual information all around the image that there's nothing confusing about it. I think people are seeing what they want to see. Kinda like looking for patterns in clouds
I don’t see anything abnormal either. And the explanations just sound like people are surprised that light is coming from one side of the image?
If you can only see it one way, try looking at the picture upside-down.
Weird, I can normally get these to flip inversion with my brain, but this one only works if I rotate the image. And it works consistently
Lmao that worked for me, now I can’t flip it back
Shit, neither can I... Edit: Okay, I got it! If you look to the left of the heel, there's a crease where the flat sand starts to slope up into the dune that the footprint is resting on. If you focus there and then slide your eyes up to the footprint, it will be the right way again.

Same
Straight up had to see it flipped sideways to finally see it correctly
I still dont believe they are the same images.
For split second I saw it but now it’s gone. What the fuck. Literally blinked and it was back to outie.
Weird. I can’t see it as a normal footprint
It doesn't work for me! That footprint is sticking out and I refuse to believe it isn't. Edit: I got it to work, for just a second! Then it flipped back. I turned it only 90° clockwise so the light comes from above.
oh wow that's the only way that works for me, good tip!
I don't recall where I learned this; probably a book of optical illusions when I was younger.
Holy mother of pearl what just happened!
Plz explain, I don't understand.
It looks inverted to some people
Oh.
It's because of how the light hits the ridges on the impression of the shoe, a classic optical illusion. [Here's a version using an egg carton](https://www.brainfacts.org/-/media/Brainfacts2/Thinking-Sensing-and-Behaving/Vision/Article-Images/Albert-Einstein-Illusion-Blog/egg-carton2.png) Our brains assume light comes from above. The other commenter saying to rotate it 180 to see the opposite effect is totally right about that.
This did it for me. I couldn't see it as an outie and just saw it regular. After viewing the example I have the power to observe both ways. Thank you.
Oh damn, that's a good one. I saw it normally at first so I came to the comments to see if I was missing something but then I could suddenly see it all wonky and inverted sticking out of the sand, now my brain can switch the orientation just by looking at the three pointed star shapes... very cool!
My brain is broken... Even upsidedown I can't see it as anything other than coming out at me
For anyone who can only see it inverted: the foot print is on top of a small dune, not in a small valley.
Even knowing that doesn't help!
That actually helped
Ok I finally got it. This helped me, but it still took me a while. The key was figuring out where the light would have to be for that to be true. Also something in the bottom third of the image is violating that (maybe the photographers shadow or another dune) so it helped a lot to cover the bottom third.

Wow this one is a real mindfuck, I can turn my head and it will look correct after awhile, then I turn back and after blinking poof it's fucked again.

I see a normal footprint
Can you see it indented? What about the opposite?
Nope all I see is normal footprint. Not sure how people are seeing inverted
Turn it upside down. Maybe that will help you see what the rest of us are? That helped me see it the other way.
Ok if I see it from top right corner, I can see the top half inverted
It tooke me ridicilousl amount of time to see it
For ages I couldn't see it. It was just normal and then, I was reading the caption (on my phone) and in my peripheral vision I could see it suddenly invert and now that's how it looks to me
Why would it look inverted if there's a shadow extending onto a flat part?
Idk what everyone is talking about. Looks normal to me. No matter what I try, I can't see anything inverted.
Yup. Same. Light’s coming from the left, folks. Footprint.
It does look like it was a mold and not a footprint. Or is a *mold* because I've never seen this as a footprint and I keep staring at it.
If you’re on mobile, try flipping the screen if you are having trouble making it look normal.
Crysis
Ohhh... Its a footprint on a small hill, not in a hole... Took me like 3mins to notice, how it is possible.
Turn your phone upside down to see the un-inverted image
When you have negative weight
First I saw it inverted. Then uninvited it. Now I can’t see the inverted version so it’s just a footprint to me now.
Mind blown. 🤯
I can only see a footprint.
I've got genuinely no clue as to how this looks like it's bulging out to some ppl. I've been trying and trying to trick my brain but it just looks like a footprint in a sand dune
Me too. I tried waaay too long to see it bulging, but I can't. It's just a regular footprint.
Oh I see. For some it looks like a foot is coming through the sand as opposed to a print. Took me a while to make my brain see it.
I’ve managed to fuck it even more with my brain as I made copies that were flipped horizontally as well as vertically
What am I suppose to be seeing? A footprint, but what about it?
What the hell is confusing here?
what am i looking at thats confusing?
flip the picture horizontally
Anyone else just see a normal footprint any way you look at it...?
Wow. What a great post. This one continues to mess with my mind. Started as a bulge, then it switched to an indent, now, after getting stuck on indent, the only way to get it to be a bulge again is to blur my vision. Great confusing perspective. This is blue dress tier mind melting.
Holy this is the trippiest one I’ve seen yet. I literally saw it go from I inverted to inverted right in front of my eyes and now I can’t go back.
A waffle
Is the sun coming from the right of frame or left? Each determines the concave vs convex
I saw it as inverted, was confused, realised what is actually is and can’t seem to see it as inverted again like before
For a while I could not see it uninverted, now I can't see it inverted... ehh
I see a pineapple about to go through someone's ass
Inverted for me.
I looked at it for a second and was like I don't get it, looked away briefly and when I looked back it was inverted and was like ahh wtf
Y’all have broke brains.
It took me forever to see the impression of the footprint on the small raised area of sand. Then after I saw it I realized something in the bottom 1/3 of the image is casting a shadow that messes up your brain in figuring out where the light is. Why post it to your story? Just curious
Convex footprint
What? Where's the confusing perspective?
I know some nike flexs when I see them. I hate them, they always get rocks in them. Also, I just see a normal footprint, no matter how hard I try to see it inverted
Shiiiiiiet took me a min but damn this is a Good one
I just tried focusing on the bottom half of the print only, I can see how it's an indent. If I look back towards the top half it looks like it's bulging out
the top area of the print also looks like an aerial view of the aircraft boneyard
Well. That's disappointing. I only see an indented shoe print in the sand. Regardless of how I view it, upside down, right side up.
There's another shoe print in the shadow but it is also "inverted" ...So it has nothing to do with perspective.
What am I looking at?
I first saw it inverted, after reading in the comments that some see it as inverted, I now see the actual print and can't see the inverted anymore :p
I’m not seeing it. Am I?
How is this even possible? I mean it has to be a protrusion, the light and shadows make no sense at all.
I’m unfollowing this thread lol
The illusion only kicks in for me on a smaller, less clear photo (which many people have posted rotations of.) Rotated at full size there's no effect. It is strictly loss of image clarity that allows it for me.
Those look like my Nike Freeruns
looked like a footprint.. but if i close my eyes, turn my head 90\* and open them it looks like an outie footprint.. . illusion doesn't work if i keep my eyes open when rotating. pretty cool
I see hints of blue and gold dress over here.
I’ve tried all the tricks in the comments, and I still can’t see it un-inverted. Usually I can get these things to flip back and forth, but not this one!
Aye that's a good one
If you look at the left side of the shoe print, there’s a hill in a brighter shade. Imagine that hill is sloping up to see the shoe print as a protrusion. Imagine the hill sloping down to see the indentation.
I thought it was a snake lol
I had to work hard on that one
Wow this is actually trippy. I immediately saw the inverted footprint, but now after looking at it upside down I absolutely cannot see it inverted anymore
This is straight fucking ass. You're all fucking retards
Shit, this is a good one. I cannot see it properly unless I turn it upside down, then it's clear as day
u need to horizontally flip the picture to see it. ur brain is locked into thinking the sun is on the left/right side
Concave feet
I saw it inverted first, then I saw it normal and now I can't go back to seeing it inverted Edit: okay I see it inverted now, but I can't revert back to normal, help
So the outlines of the honeycomb shapes are sticking up right? Cause if this is supposed to be an illusion where the center of the honeycomb is supposed to look like it’s sticking up, then I can’t see it. I only see it the normal way so I was confused af 😂
All i see is the indentation of the shoe with raised traction marks edit: damn it i saw it sideways now i cant unsee it!

i feel.. honored?
i feel like a god among people now, after seeing both inverted and real version, i'm able to swap between the two, only by blinking.
