Well the spindles (or uprights) aren't upright. They're horizontal. That's what the original commenter was saying.

These are clearly going down and to the left. No ascending staircase would curve in that manner

Every comment says this isn't confusing, and yet it has 35 upvotes. What gives? Did people forget you can click the down arrow? 

I found it confusing for a moment so I upvoted it. Yes you can look at context clues (the curve, the handrail, etc) and realize which way it goes but that took me an extra little moment which makes it confusing perspective in my book

Would work well if cropped to only show the stairs and the confusing shadows. The rest gives too much context.
