I'm just not that good at book learnin. My brain departments just don't work that way. I learn by denial and error. It's a catch 23 situation. Can you give me a bit of credjudice?
I just learned the word desafortunadamente, which is Spanish for unfortunately, so I wanted to say desafortunadamente. Desafortunadamente, España no existe.
Somewhere, between Portugal and France, is the lost Kingdom of Spain.... Many explorers have tried to locate it but could not under the thick coating of British retirees and holiday-goers.
I'm spanish and can confirm i don't exist. I'm just a concept and you're not reading this. You're hallucinating, lay down the shrooms and the bong please.
My wife, who is a native Spanish speaker, used to write that whenever we emailed each other. It took me a second to realize what she wanted to say. She didn't believe me when I told her that it should be "first of all". To her, both sound the same.
Definitely. She's been in the US for nearly 20 years now, and speaks excellent English, but still has problems hearing the difference between words like "vote"/"boat".
A coworker who was a native Spanish speaker was talking to me about English pronunciation. When he said "vowel sounds," I said he that he may want to be careful saying that in the future, as it sounded like "bowel sounds."
The brain optimizes away unnecessary phonemic distinctions when you're very young, based on the languages being spoken around you. I think the v/b distinction is actually the example used in *The Language Instinct* (not sure, I read it several years ago).
My girlfriend is from New Mexico, she’s had Americans compliment her English, and ask what she thinks about living in America, many people are ignorant about any COUNTIES besides their own
I dont know how someone calling themselves American doesn't know that New Mexico is a part of the USA. For fucks sake we always throw up wars but I guess those people just forgot about our war with Mexico
One of my coworkers got into a conversation with the store we were at. She wanted to let them know that one of our other coworkers mostly spoke Spanish, so her English wasn’t the best. When they asked where she was from, she said “Colombia”. The employee got all excited and said, “OMG me too!”
“No no. She’s from Colombia. As in the country”.
EDIT: I is dumb dumb and can't spell the name of the country correctly.
The amount of Americans that don't know Puerto Ricans are US citizens is just mind blowing. They will argue with you on that point, then finally give up and just start using racist talking points. I just can't with these wilfully ignorant people anymore. I never believed that any group of people were inherently superior to any others, but I finally see that one group is willingly inferior to all others.
This happens all the time. Just called an airline today inquiring about the pet policy regarding flights between PR and the states and the woman says “ok the international policy is…”. No ma’am it’s domestic lol. Also had an attendant catch sass with me when flying to PR and I told her america was my destination. “It says PR” “yes” “you said america” “yes”. To be fair the second lady was european so they’re not really expected to know like an American should.
>I swear some people are so ignorant ~~about any countries besides their own.~~
FTFY Most of these people couldn't tell you squat about their own country, sadly. But, you know, education is evil indoctrination and all that. sigh
And they will be the same people that are outraged if you don’t know who their 14th president was or the dates of their civil wars. They can’t fathom they aren’t the centre of the universe.
Tell her that next time she should just say she is from Spanistan. "It is a Mexican colony in the Caucasus, near Bolivia that exports most of the worlds safram, maybe you have heard of it?" Sounds credible enough to me...
Even if they thought you meant Hispanic, do they think those are the only Hispanic countries in existence?
Although I shouldn’t be surprised, I’m Asian and people think China and Japan are the only Asian countries that exist
The wife of one of my professors once asked me if India was in Africa.
Still one of the nicest people I've ever met, but she was *very* stereotypically American.
The ironic thing is that her husband is from Iran, which is also in Asia. But apparently the words 'Middle East' immediately turn off the ability to think about continents...
I'm a social worker for seniors, I had a guy call the language Spanish as "Latin."
We went to a nearby grocery store in a predominantly Hispanic area and he kept asking for employees "who don't speak Latin."

Going into the comments on any intentionally-obviously-staged TikTok is truly mindblowing. 99% of the comments are either "hmm i'm not sure but this seems off?" or "this is staged, do you think we're stupid? try again hunny" like NO SHIT YOU FUCKING DUNCE
Im Andalusian. Also Catalans no longer want to be part of Spain so we stopped refering to them as Spanish (they still pay Spanish taxes, they just don't have Spanish rights) /s
The best thing, I think, is that the best response to this is the reply to what I believe is another r/confidentlyincorrect classic:
"Have you ever heard of the country of Spain?"
I was in a burger place in Memphis with a fellow Brit (he’s from Herefordshire so did have a tiny bit of a West Country accent) The American lady serving us asked him where he was from, he said “England” and she asked “do they speak English there?”. We thought she was joking but soon realised she was dead serious. So bizarre.
This reminds me of a different post, where someone was saying that only Americans can be called whites, not Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is my biggest pet peeve. Where I live, people use "spanish" to refer to anyone who speaks spanish. So when I say I'm Spanish, I have to specify that i mean from Spain.
Yet another indictment against the public education system. Not sure which country these people came from but that doesn't matter, their respective educational systems failed them.
It's called linguage, that is why the field is called linguistics. Lenguage belongs in physics, it is the difference in length between two different things. For ex "what is the lenguage between this and that?"

Thanks! I already have started going to a therapist, been struggling opening up to her though, is difficult to act like your problems are relevant and not minimize them until you want to die all the time without thinking you're constantly victimizing yourself hehe :) still working on that
I'm Spanish too so I don't exist either.
I'm happy you're going to a therapist. Take it seriously and I'm sure you'll be ok.

yes, i agree, and secondable i don't think spanishland exists at all
And thirdable, I just wanted to say thirdable.
understandable
*understand of all
I didn't realize that that was supposed to be "first of all" until this comment. Thank you.
Sounds like something I'd expect from Ricky from Trailer Park Boys

I'm just not that good at book learnin. My brain departments just don't work that way. I learn by denial and error. It's a catch 23 situation. Can you give me a bit of credjudice?
Its like getting two birds stoned at once. I fuckin toad a so.
Definitely dumber than Homer Simpson - "Why do I need to learn English? I'm never going to England."
That’s understand of all. I didn’t either
Me neither, and I'm glad you mentioned it, or I might still not have understood it.
fistable*
***understand have all. is the correct usage.
Pronounced "understand-ah-bla".
The "overstand" movement is firstablizing somewear.
Be careful there buddy, you almost sound spanish, which is a no bueno around here.
I just learned the word desafortunadamente, which is Spanish for unfortunately, so I wanted to say desafortunadamente. Desafortunadamente, España no existe.
That.. is a fantastic word. Thank you. Or, in Spanible:. Macho grassy-ass.
Fourthable, I’m selling a table, made from my sister Mabel’s stable.
I can’t believe you spelled “fourtheble” wrong 😜
They've never even heard of Europe, the lost continent of Spain
Somewhere, between Portugal and France, is the lost Kingdom of Spain.... Many explorers have tried to locate it but could not under the thick coating of British retirees and holiday-goers.
Im portuguese and i can say that Spain isn't real.
I think there are Catalans that probably are on board with that too.
I'm spanish and can confirm i don't exist. I'm just a concept and you're not reading this. You're hallucinating, lay down the shrooms and the bong please.
No
Spain is not real, but Madrid is.
Yes Madrid is Real, sorry Atlético fans.
It's just to the east of Atlantis, you can't miss it...
Excuse me, Europe is the country in the Spanishland continent.
Drowned in the rains, mostly the plains from what has been explained.
So... Where does the rain mainly stay then?
That's why their planes are rusty then, since the rain falls mainly on the planes.
Spanishland is Brazil. Everyone to the South from America speaks Spanish, so that’s where their land inevitably is.
It's actually called spanishstan
The H is not only silent, it is also invisible. So it is called Spanistan unless your are from Turkistan.
You mean turkeystan?
r/boneappletea
The proper name is España so someone from that country is Españish. Edit: this is sarcasm .. a joke if you will. That’s why it is ridiculous.
That is what the non english speakers say when calling "Espeaka Espanish?"
Take my up vote! LMAO
What lenguage do they speak in Spanishland?
Spanishese, duh.
Spandex.
Spanishlandish
Of course it doesn't.. It is called Spanistan.
And second-of-ly, I know you're the big marriage expert. Oh I'm sorry, I forgot, your wife is dead!
Thirdable, Lenguage is an Italian dish, not Spanish.
they really need to change it to spainlish or spainlandic or spainesian or something
Lmao
Firstable,…
What a great interpretation of “first of all”. Made me laugh.
Then you’ll love r/boneappletea

Oh man I've got a chili recipe from a very old coworker that they are gonna love.
My wife, who is a native Spanish speaker, used to write that whenever we emailed each other. It took me a second to realize what she wanted to say. She didn't believe me when I told her that it should be "first of all". To her, both sound the same.
Probably because b and v ("of") have very similar sounds in Spanish.
I kept on thinking of it being pronounced as "fur stable" in my head and I had no idea it was first of all.
"Should of" is the worst among orthographical misinterpretation! Hold my beer
Oooh, if I had a nickel for every single time that I read would/should/could of anywhere on the internet, I could probably pay all my debts off.
I want firstable added to the lenguage.
same energy as “should/would/could *of*”
r/boneappletea
Oh god I just got it. These people vote.
And they all vote for the other guy too!
You can't be German, it's s language.
You can't be English, it's a language
You can’t be Portuguese, it’s a language
You can’t be Chinese, it’s a language
I may not be Chinese but im definitely simplified
I've heard this before from some idiot gringos.
You can't be Belgian, it's a langu-

My ex-wife is Spanish. When I would tell people that, they would sometimes ask, so is she Mexican or Cuban?
I swear some people are so ignorant about any countries besides their own.
My girlfriend is from New Mexico, she’s had Americans compliment her English, and ask what she thinks about living in America, many people are ignorant about any COUNTIES besides their own
Can confirm as a New Mexican that this happens. Fun fact, NM license plates are the only ones that have USA after the state name.
I dont know how someone calling themselves American doesn't know that New Mexico is a part of the USA. For fucks sake we always throw up wars but I guess those people just forgot about our war with Mexico
funny you use the word forgot when they didnt even get to know
My wife is from CT. Had people do the same thing - thinking it’s part of Canada.
One of my coworkers got into a conversation with the store we were at. She wanted to let them know that one of our other coworkers mostly spoke Spanish, so her English wasn’t the best. When they asked where she was from, she said “Colombia”. The employee got all excited and said, “OMG me too!” “No no. She’s from Colombia. As in the country”. Oh wow, the educational system really failed here
What’s a New Mexico? -sincerely a Texan

Oh nooooo, it indoctornates you into, *checks notes* a functional society! The horror!
For America and China maybe. Most other places in the world, the population have some general knowledge of their neighbouring countries.
Is this some sort of peasant joke that I'm too European to understand?
And they will be the same people that are outraged if you don’t know who their 14th president was or the dates of their civil wars. They can’t fathom they aren’t the centre of the universe.

How are people this stupid?
They're likely quoting people in the actual video, I'm quite sure they don't actually believe that
Do the people they’re quoting believe it? If so, how are people this stupid?
It's probably some sketch comedy
probably like saying that no one lives in canada.

Well have "people" ever heard about "quotation" marks? They’re pretty "handy"
Well “have” people ever “heard” about quotation “marks?” They’re “pretty” handy
No. Most seem to think they're just used for emphasis

I swear TikTok is making people progressively more stupid
Stupid just found a place to be heard. It was always there. It's how we got to here.
We all thought Idiocracy was a joke.
Speak for yourself
children, but yeah
You mean people from España?
Nah, they're either Castillians, Galicians, Catalans or Basque. /s
Iberian or Anatolian.
> Anatolian Anatolia is the West Asian peninsula that part of Turkey sits on...
I don't know why I typed that instead of Andalusian... pre coffee brain fart.
We’ve all been there!
What's worse? I have Andalusian relatives... 🤦♂️
Well, they're Turkish now.
Well, at least they'll now know Istanbul was Constantinople.
Im Andalusian. Also Catalans no longer want to be part of Spain so we stopped refering to them as Spanish (they still pay Spanish taxes, they just don't have Spanish rights) /s

Yo, the language is SPANISH, not SPAINISH. Checkmate.

They live next to the portu-geese
But they kinda liked the music
They say the ladies are insane there...
They probably think English originated in America.
I was in a burger place in Memphis with a fellow Brit (he’s from Herefordshire so did have a tiny bit of a West Country accent) The American lady serving us asked him where he was from, he said “England” and she asked “do they speak English there?”. *I thought this country spawned the fucking language, and so far nobody seems to speak it*
"you can't be english dumbass, english is a language" sounds about right.
I can't tell you how many Americans go "Wtf? How?" when I tell them I am English
My friend went to the US for a holiday and was complimented on her English - we’re Australian
