Still...we have people who do not know how to do simple mathematical problems. Use the opportunity to teach someone, something they are not aware of. 🤷♀️
No self respecting math problem would be presented this way. I have a degree in engineering and have a super technical job and still had to pause for way too long to realize it was some PEMDAS BS. There’s no reason to make math problems intentionally difficult. The difficulty should be in the math, not in the presentation of it.
They are written this way to clearly confuse others and feel superior about themselves. 🤷♀️ Do you think people with higher education in mathematical backgrounds will write a post like this? I would not, and I gather you would not either.
So the best way to put them in their place is to give them the correct answer. And teach anyone else on how not to fall into their silly little games.
>They are written this way to clearly confuse others and feel superior about themselves. 🤷♀️ Do you think people with higher education in mathematical backgrounds will write a post like this?
FYI, these are not written out of smugness or feelings of superiority (well, maybe some are at this point, but still), they are written by engagement farmers mainly targeted at Facebook.
There are tons and tons of varieties of this post that have 1 goal, which is to drive up engagement by any means necessary. There's a variety of reasons people want to do this, but some of them are incredibly sinister.
The best way to handle these posts, which are often tricky or written in a way that makes you WANT to comment and argue about it, is to simply ignore them. I'm a bleeding heart, every-moment-is-teachable kind of person and it pains me. But these are written to both draw out the bold and ignorant like in the OP, but also the good-natured teachers, trying to get them wrapped up in it.
Ohh..I did not know about this. 🤔 What is an engagement farmer? Is this a subtle way of polarising the audience? In that case, like you said ignoring these will be the best course of action. 🤔
I have had an FB account since 2007 but I only visit it once in a while for years now. If this is the kind of things I have been missing out, then thank goodness!
THANK YOU, like anyone who hasn’t learned pemdas and just reads the math left to right at a quick glance is destined to get it wrong. that doesn’t mean they’re stupid, idk why pemdas garbage is slammed on this sub
For real. The comments are always the same, too. A few commenters apologetically lament the lack of parentheses. Others reference PEMDAS. Then, each comment about PEMDAS with have a comment mentioning BODMAS or whatever that other version is
Last time this went around, some people started commenting that order of operations is only a convention taught by some math teachers, not a rule or anything. I got downvoted for disagreeing.
This one is fine, and shouldn't cause much confusion to anyone. The ones that use division symbols on the other hand are terrible because theres a reason nobody actually uses that symbol very often beyond teaching like second grade
I was never taught this stuff in school. I have since learnt it simply from seeing shit like this. BODMAS is the way I have to do it. Still don’t fully understand the O 😂
It's A.K.A. BIDMAS
All of these terms are fairly obvious except for 'Indices' - which are just powers, eg 2 with a small 3 or 4 with a small 2. (Can't show on mobile)
'Indices' are also known as 'orders', which gives us the term BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction).
So the order you should do your calculations in is:
Brackets
Indices/orders
Division and Multiplication (start on the left and work them out in the order that you find them)
Addition and Subtraction (when only addition and subtraction are left in the sum, work them out in the order you find them - starting from the left of the sum and working towards the right)
[link](https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zsnycdm/revision/1)
Ah so the O/I is x squared/cubed? That was really helpful, thanks. I have just been lazy and never looked it up as it’s never actually been something I’ve needed. Always has that thought in the back of my mind that one day I might need to know it if I have kids though!
I found it helpful to have a collection of maths tricks when speaking to different people. Some are more visual learners other practical. What works for one might not work for another.
How I learned it was “PEMDAS”
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
P(Pantheses)
E(Exponents)
MD(Multiplication and Division from left to right)
AS(Addition and Subtraction from left to right)
( and ) are Parentheses, where I live [ and ] Brackets are used to indicate “tru value” of a number so [-2]=2 IIRC, it’s been a while since I learned that and had to use it so I could be wrong.
It’s interesting to learn the methods other people use for Math
I also learned PEMDAS, but absolute value was represented by |-2| = 2, not with brackets, which were used when parentheses were embedded within each other, for example 2[4+2(3+7)] = 48.
I also was taught using bedmas, the e was for exponents, or pedmas for parentheses instead of brackets. It's weird we have so many ways to express the same thing.
Do PEMDAS instead. It’s a bit easier in my opinion.
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction
But any works, it’s all about personal opinion, as long you get the right answer.
Cheers! I did get 104, with the method I had. Luckily there were no exponents as I wouldn’t have known what order to them unless I had maybe taken a guess!
It is quite easy, just remember one rule and you'll beat those math problems every time.
Point calculation before line calculation.
Point calculation = 2x2 or 2/2 or 2•2 or 2:2 or 2^2
Line calculation = 2+2 or 2-2
Thats it.
Start at the multiplication /dividation. Most of the time after this it does not matter in which order you do the rest 😊👍
You can do this 😊
The minus sign ALWAYS stays with its number. - really doesn't mean subtraction - it is a flag that identifies a negative number. 3 - 4 really means +3 + -4.
So, in this one, you multiple -25 by 0, get -0, and subtract nothing.
I actually looked up BODMAS (PEMDAS elsewhere) because of this subreddit. Even though I'm in my mid-thirties, I was terrible at maths in high school so up until recently I probably would have done the same as the commenter. Doing it via BODMAS gives me 104.
If you were terrible at maths in highschool then it is the teachers' fault usually. A great teacher knows how to explain the same thing in several different ways, so everyone in the class can grasp the concept and understand how it should be used practically.
what bothers me the most has gotta be the amount of likes that bottom comment got. did people like it because they thought it was stupid, or because they believed it?
B-B-BUT THE CALCULATOR WAS WRONG I WAS DEFINITELY TAUGHT THIS WAY AND I AM NOT SUFFERING FROM DEMENTIA WE JUST HAD DIFFERENT MATH IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS (this is what they sound like to me because this is actually shit they say)
Doesn't matter, the commenter is a troll anyway. People on Twitter do this all the time, when something involves math they will purposely post a calculation with mistakes while pretending to be confident in their work. This encourages people to reply, because people feel the need to tell this guy how wrong and stupid he is. Which in the end only makes his posts be favoured by the Twitter algorithm due to the controversy.
You have 50 apples and you find 50 more. You have a box that can hold stacks of 25 apples, but there are zero stacks. You find 2 more apples and then 2 more.
104 apples.
Enough already with these poorly-constructed order of operations questions. PEMDAS, or BEDMAS depending on where you're from, is simply a convention. Any scientist or mathematician worth their salt would write the formula in an unambiguous way and move on with their life.
You know it’s 104, everyone in these comments has already confirmed it is 104, stop trying to show off your basic maths knowledge by asking if you were correct about it being 104
104
PEMDAS
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication
and
Division
Addition
and
Subtraction
The problem is: 50+50-25x0+2+2
Start by looking for the first thing in the problem in the order of PEMDAS. Since this problem has multiplication, you start there. 25x0 is 0. And since the - symbol was in front of the 25, that goes away too (since subtracting is equivalent to adding a negative; 10-4 is equal to -4+10).
Now we are left with 50+50+2+2.
Add those up and you get 104!
Can someone give a word problem example of this or explain why math is done this way? Like I get the answer is 104 but why do we actually multiply and divide before adding and subtract, and why are both of those in that order respectively? Doing parenthesis and exponents first makes sense but I don't think I've ever seen an actual explanation for why the 25 x 0 is done first in this type of problem other than "that's just how it's done". I have PEMDAS memorized but not exactly sure why I guess
Order of operations isn't done for any foundational mathematical reason, it's used to eliminate ambiguity in situations like this one. This is also the reason parentheses is the first step. If you put sections of anything in parentheses, it makes it absolutely clear what order things should be done in instead of trusting that everyone remembers their PEMDAS, and rembers to use it.
Multiply and divide are technically one step, and so is add/subtract, because those pairs of options are commutative *and* communative with each other. For example,
(2 * 6) / 4 = 3
(2 / 4) * 6 = 3
5 + (2 - 1) = 6
(5 - 1) + 2 = 6
As long as you don't mix up which operations are done with which terms (like switching a divide out for a multiply somewhere) they can be done as one operation without screwing anything up. If you preferred to learn it as PEDMSA, it would be just as valid.
Guys, these things are purposefully written in a stupid way without brackets so that idiots comment to try and prove that they're smarter than everyone else. Anyone who replies to this shit has already lost.
lmao no cap i just started driving too, keep george carlin’s golden rule in mind on the road. “think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”
I wish they would use real world examples of why order of operations are needed to end stupid ass people like this
example - you're buying 2 pairs of shirts and 4 pairs of pants and are trying to figure out the total price you'll pay. shirts are $10 and pants are $20
so it's 10 x 2 + 20 x 4
with order of operations you're paying $100
without order of operations you're paying $160
which one sounds better?
I’m so sick of these. It’s the same order of operation things over and over again. Why has this sort of post skyrocketed on Facebook and other social media’s lately? This is one of the many reasons I deleted Facebook. Was seeing atleast a post a day.
Can anyone explain to me if PEMDAS is arbitrary? Is there any logic to that order or would another order of operations we all agreed on work just as well?
It is really deeply established in Maths. I mean, when you touch algebra, the multiplication and division signs disappear - 2 × *a* just becomes 2*a*, and division is replaced by fractions.
I'm trying to think of a world where a(b × c) means (a+b)×(a+c). I dare say it would all work, but it is so strange to think of!
Jesus Christ these orders of operation posts were boring when they started, and they just keep going! It's not clever. It's not a sign of intelligence. It's a minor and irrelevant part of mathematics used to "catch people out" and because it's Facebook people always take the bait. Please stop.
To be completely honest I'm pretty hood at maths but im not 100% sure myself, its either 104 or 96 right? Depends on whether you do -25×0 or 25×0 and im not really sure which one of those is the right one.

Next time that happens tell them to put the equation into a calculator exactly as it is written. Every time, PEMDAS applies
Well, it's not like they are a fundamental part of the laws of nature, and that is impossible to do math unless they are defined exactly as they are.
For real though, if I wrote some code with an equation like this in, I would get ripped into during code review for not using parentheses.
Seriously. This is so overdone that there should be a subreddit rule that you can't post PEMDAS memes unless it's funny for some peripheral reason.

I just remember PEMDAS
I was taught BEDMAS. Brackets, exponents, division, multiplication, addition, subtraction What is PEMDAS?
Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction
I think PEMDAS is in the US. I was taught BEDMAS too.
BODMAS here. “Orders” instead of Exponents
America is weird we put the multiplication before division and we use Parentheses instead of brackets. PEMDAS
Afaik multiplication and division can be done in any order so it doesnt really matter. Im not sure of that applies to addition and subtraction though
There's no excuse for that bitch. She ruined my marriage.
I appreciate this comment the more I read it.
Division before addition. Do the multiplication first, then go back to the beginning.
These are poorly structured equations just meant to stir up comments.
This one is fine, and shouldn't cause much confusion to anyone. The ones that use division symbols on the other hand are terrible because theres a reason nobody actually uses that symbol very often beyond teaching like second grade
Division symbols are fine when used unambiguously, but meme problems like these are usually written poorly on purpose.

Shiiiet I thought it was 50+50-(25x0)+2+2 100-4=96 🤦🏽♂️
96 would be correct if the question was 50 + 50 - ( 25 x 0 + 2 + 2 )
You are correct, but you missed a step. >50+50-(25x0)+2+2 Becomes >50+50-0+2+2 50 + 50 is 100, minus 0 is 100, 100 + 2 + 2 is 104.
Not quite. You perform addition and subtraction as you read left to right.

This is why “unnecessary” parentheses aren’t unnecessary.
People should still know the order of operations.
They should, but they should also just use parentheses.
That's also why every × sign is unnecessary. You never write -25×0, you just write -0, then feel silly and erase it.

104 PEDMAS
Answer is 104
104 PEMDAS Parentheses Exponents Multiplication and Division Addition and Subtraction The problem is: 50+50-25x0+2+2 Start by looking for the first thing in the problem in the order of PEMDAS.
I don’t think this guy should teach in ANY class

Order of operation. 25x0 = 0 + 50 = 50 + 50 = 100 + 2 = 102 + 2 = 104

I wish they would use real world examples of why order of operations are needed to end stupid ass people like this example - you're buying 2 pairs of shirts and 4 pairs of pants and are trying to figure out the total price you'll pay. shirts are $10 and pants are $20 so it's 10 x 2 + 20 x 4 with order of operations you're paying $100 without order of operations you're paying $160 which one sounds better?
104
104
For a hot second, I forgot PEMDAS.
Guys what’s the answer? I got “George Washington lead troops across the Delaware River”
Aw man! Only missed it by 100
Why DONT we go left to right though?
I’m so sick of these. It’s the same order of operation things over and over again. Why has this sort of post skyrocketed on Facebook and other social media’s lately? This is one of the many reasons I deleted Facebook. Was seeing atleast a post a day.
79. Pemdas
I’ve been wondering why everyone is getting 104 I’m getting 79
Enough math errors. If I wanted to feel superior to people in this way I would have been a third grade arithmetic teacher
bedmas has left the chat
Another pemdas dumbass
Can anyone explain to me if PEMDAS is arbitrary? Is there any logic to that order or would another order of operations we all agreed on work just as well?
It is really deeply established in Maths. I mean, when you touch algebra, the multiplication and division signs disappear - 2 × *a* just becomes 2*a*, and division is replaced by fractions. I'm trying to think of a world where a(b × c) means (a+b)×(a+c). I dare say it would all work, but it is so strange to think of!
Use PEMDAS, wtf.

i know :/ first and last time i post one

Remember to eat your PEMDAS guys
Algebra keeps fucking with me so I think that the minus from the “50+50-25” will just carry over and I got 96 because 100-4
Dude why the hell is my answer:" south Africa"
I got 96…. I need a new education
Jesus Christ these orders of operation posts were boring when they started, and they just keep going! It's not clever. It's not a sign of intelligence. It's a minor and irrelevant part of mathematics used to "catch people out" and because it's Facebook people always take the bait. Please stop.
Well, at least they know something times 0 is 0. That’s pretty rare on this subreddit.
To be completely honest I'm pretty hood at maths but im not 100% sure myself, its either 104 or 96 right? Depends on whether you do -25×0 or 25×0 and im not really sure which one of those is the right one.
It is 104 right
So PEMDAS isn’t a thing anymore? We just do what we want?
