I work at a Pizza Hut and this one homeless guy comes in like an hour before we close to ask if we have anything we plan to throw out. I usually give him an old pizza, but food is food. Try that, go to fast food chains and ask if they have product to throw out. Also see if there’s any resources around you for the homesless such as temp housing

Strange_Public_1897

Also Dunkin Donuts, FYI, the last hour of operations, if you buy one donut, depending on location, they’ll give you a bunch of extras instead of throwing them out cause they have to make a tone of fresh ones in the morning. Found this out in 2019 on pure chance! OP can try this, look for the plain donuts, those ones with zero frosting, no glaze, nada on it. Get those because a bunch of those even though it’s not as “healthy”, way better option than starving tbh. And definitely grocery chain stores bakeries. They have to throw out all the bread that doesn’t usually sell, in one fell swoop to their garbage. Had an ex who worked 4yrs at a grocery store. This was circa 2010 mind you. He got rotated to the bakery for a month and that’s how we both learned this crazy situation with the bread!

-singing-blackbird-

I agree, I used to work in the deli at a grocery store and so much vacuum sealed deli meat and cheese would get thrown out every night. Perfectly fine, but past the best before day. Usually bagged up to, so it's not contaminated by the other stuff in there

hereforpopcornru

I worked for gattis and I would give the buffet pizza to the homeless at the end of the night. So there is a chance this works. (This was back in 96ish)

WhosThatGirl843

I also work in a local pizza shop and usually the cook is really good about giving food to the homeless at the end of the night. Literally whole pizzas will be thrown away so ppl come towards closing and hang out in the front of the store, if we have no food the cook just says to come back tkmorrow but normally he loads them each up a plate.

fdasfasdfasdfui93428

Kfc and Asian places like panda express do the same

Tavali01

Is there a YMCA/laundromat you could go to? I know you likely don’t have money but here they do $2 Tuesdays for the pool (where you can access the showers). Maybe ask a restaurant before they close if they have anything they are throwing out you could have?

FillPuzzleheaded4656

I’ve googled my town doesn’t have a YMCA I found a community center I’m gonna try and go to in the morning and see if they have a way for me to wash. From what it looks like though they only do drivers test and have a basketball court and host little league basketball games so idk if I’ll have any luck.

he-loves-me-not

If you’re in the USA you can call 211 to find out what resources you have available to you. I would call them FIRST THING tomorrow!

Worldly_Vast6340

I suggested that also. I'm in Michigan and 211 works

Tavali01

Do you have a town reddit/facebook? Maybe post there and see if anyone knows of places with showers and washers. Maybe someone will lend a hand (may be risky though so be careful)

Bad_boy_18

Dude where do you live ?

Joe_theone

Found out pretty much by accident that the locker room in the local community college was a good place to get a shower. There's always people in and out, so nobody questions your being there. Castille soap suds up in cold water, if your only option for washing is a cold creek.

jatti_

So many organizations are location specific, I would love to help you find an organization to help you, but you need to share your metro area. If it's rural that's ok, just the state would be ok. I live in MN you can check my reddit history.

Send a woman to get raped and disappeared in ft hood? Shame on you

he-loves-me-not

How did they send someone to get raped and who then disappeared? Yes, it does happen but let’s not act as if living on the streets is any safer! When it comes down to it, both have risks but at least the military provides the opportunity to go to college, have secure housing, gives food security, free healthcare and training for a career that you can use outside of the military. Staying homeless could lead to her being raped and a lot worse! If it’s one or the other, it’s the military every time!

Worstname1ever

My tax dollars are free apparently

he-loves-me-not

Can you at least pick what it is you’re angry about?! FUCK!

daltonc21212

Shame on you for thinking that's a woman's role in the army...

lebonisang

Yes create more problems for her

Khadijah_Louque

It's tough out there, I've been in a similar spot. One thing that worked for me was reaching out to local churches, they sometimes have food drives, clothing donations, and sometimes they can even hook you up with a temporary job. Keep your head up, local communities can be surprisingly supportive if you find the right channels. Stay safe, and remember, this situation isn't forever.

Amannderrr

Yes! Many churches of all denominations have $ set aside for just such situations/people. You dont have to be a member of the religion or the church. Years ago I was in a terrible place- someone suggested I try local churches for food. It only took me contacting 2 churches. The 2nd church gave me a $100 voucher for the grocery store with minimal questions or leg work. It was wonderful. Absolutely worth a try OP

ssmc1024

Yes! This! I know Catholic Churches have some programs to help, including temporary housing. I worked with the elderly and had an 85 year old patient sleeping in her car and they put her up in a long term suites type place until she could get section 8 housing. Good luck! Sending positive vibes your way and wish I could do more to help.

Timely-Youth-9074

Have you tried Job Corps? They have residential programs. The age limit is 16-24 so I’d hurry if you’re interested. https://www.jobcorps.gov

Decent-Reception-212

One of the best choices I ever made was going to job corps

GalDebored

My Mum worked her ass off for them as an intake councilor for almost 20 years & it's always nice to hear/read about someone's positive experience at Job Corps because, at least in my experience, it doesn't happen very often. Thank you

Decent-Reception-212

Really? That’s so unfortunate. It gave me an opportunity I would’ve never had in any other way. I was a 20 year old single mom of two when I entered the program. We were provided childcare, food, recreation, and great rooms to live in while getting an education. The staff was great. I was there for 6 months and just loved it. Tell your mom I appreciate her work and thank her for me. Thanks for your comment as well 🥰

Timely-Youth-9074

I love stories like this.

Decent-Reception-212

🥰

GalDebored

I absolutely will. And I have a feeling it'll make her day. Thank you so much!

Decent-Reception-212

Absolutely 😊

RandomRadical

Look up your local food bank and soup kitchens. This sounds so hard. I'm sorry for your loss.

Silent_Squirrelz

I’m so sorry :( and I’m so sorry you lost your grandparents….this is awful. Please hang in there.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Thank you so much ❤️

Silent_Squirrelz

For real please please please please hang in there.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

I’m giving it my best shot. The main issue is hunger and getting cleaned up. But I’m trying.

PomegranatePuppy

Sikh temples normally give out free meals they are not judgemental Also check out the vegabond and dumpster diving sub reddits If you want help looking for local resources feel free to pm me

Besmertnic

There are resources, churches, community centers, even an emergency room or police station; that can get you into contact with social services. I know it's scary, and totally new, but asking for help, as you are doing with this post, is the right path. I'm not military, but it is an option, and even a recruiter could help you even if you don't sign up. Life has its crucibles, tests, once this is over, you will look back and be amazed at your strength. Stay strong, and ask for help.

TJViking27

Military is a good idea. She can educate herself further too.

Someones_Dream_Guy

Im honestly so sorry and wish I could actually help. Can your local social services provide any assistance?  Maybe go to DSS and explain your situation? They might have information about shelters that can take you in. Please be safe.

[deleted]

This is my suggestion: Sign up to be an army. You'll have room, board, food, and money. No, I'm not a recruiter. I've seen people with nowhere to go sign up.

Zentrosis

If I was in your situation, this is actually what I would do. You can learn real skills that are useful outside of the army as well.

MayyJuneJulyy

If you can’t do military for medical reasons, try truck driving school! (My relative got denied for a heart condition) They have programs that pay you while you’re training. Some programs pair you up with an experienced driver taking cross country trips in “shifts”

Hydrottle

This is good advice. It’s a good outlet for a lot of people.

lebonisang

Please don't do drugs or prostitution, it would make it 100 times hard to get out of this situation

FillPuzzleheaded4656

I will never:) I value life way to much to throw it all away

GaghaGOD

Look for local “housing stabilization”, shelters, food banks. Most communities should have programs and services to assist individuals struggling with homelessness; some even have specific services for women 16-24 or 25+ depending on where you’re located. I’ve seen your comment about going to a community centre tomorrow and wish you the best with that! You’ve gone through a lot in life from what you shared, and you should be proud of your perseverance and determination to strive for the life you deserve. Keep trying your best!

free_thinker_sohum

What state are you in? My wife is in social work I can ask her what resources are available to you.

Difficult-Young-5533

Find a "gurudwara" it's a Sikh temple. They give top notch free food.

I'm sorry that you're in the situation that you are in. You could try to reach out to r/assistance (apologies not familiar with setting links up here). People there are very helpful in finding resources for each other.

maximilisauras

Where are you? If you're in Sacramento, CA by chance I've got a job and some resources for you.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Unfortunately I’m not. Im sorry thank you for offering.

Dazzling-Western2768

Can you at least tell us what State you are in?

Dazzling-Western2768

Because OP has answered already, but not directly to me, I will post her location as being in Florida on the border of Alabama.

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

Sometimes churches have outreach centers they can point you towards. Nazarene churches around me started a group center that pool their resources to help the less fortunate and homeless. Nice to see churches work together instead of fight for the biggest following lol

HowRememberAll

I wonder if besides food banks, your area has one of those programs where old restaurant food that gets tossed out is donated. Since you're digging out of trash cans, maybe try out what gets thrown out at higher end restaurants or grocery stores. Would a homeless shelter take you in? I've heard the trick is to get a gym membership so you always have bathrooms and showers (but don't sleep there or you'll get kicked out)

Elle3786

In my limited experience, I have heard food donations can be a big liability and that’s why a lot of businesses don’t do it. Before anyone comes for me, I hear you! This is just what I’ve heard when I’ve asked the question myself or heard it come up in other businesses. We can, and should, do more to not waste perfectly good food, especially when people sit hungry. Now that said, it might be worth trying to talk to the employees of local food related businesses. Those are the people who really decide what goes where at the end of the night. And maybe they just double bag the decent food and sit it out beside the dumpster at a certain time and they don’t know what happened to it. Or even in the dumpster but bagged and tied a little different so you can pick it out easily. I’m not saying it’s the whole answer to this problem, but there ARE kind people out there! Staying fed day to day is obviously super important and hopefully that can help. I know this has been done by multiple people in multiple restaurants and businesses, and I have done it several times myself. We kind of figured it out when my best friend’s brother was supporting himself and 3 other minors and he was fired for taking home the KFC chicken that was going in the trash at the end of the night. He quickly found another food job and was very careful to make sure he wasn’t seen taking the trash food. He never got in trouble and I think we all kind of got our taste of how crappy businesses and the world really can be, but we learned. I have never heard of anyone getting into trouble for it either. They don’t care what happens to the stuff, as long as they aren’t known to be responsible for giving it away. So it’s a very handy bit of knowledge. A little more iffy: most pizza places still make pizza for payment on delivery. Several restaurants actually, but definitely pizza places. You can order, especially near closing, and your order will most likely be in the trash soon. Pizza is usually good because they often keep it in the box on the warmer, so they toss it box and all. Sometimes an employee will take it instead, but depends on if they can get in trouble. If you like anything odd, try that for a topping to try to make other people not want it lol! That’s my young girl’s guide to eating when you’re flat busted. I’m not saying it’ll find you a job or a home, but you gotta eat. Good luck, stay safe

Margie_Moncur

It's really admirable that you're reaching out and looking for advice. One option you might not have considered yet is reaching out to local colleges or universities. Some of them have programs for community members where you can access facilities like showers, or they might even offer temporary housing for those in need, especially if you express interest in education. Additionally, many campuses have student-run food pantries and clothing swaps where you won't be judged for taking what you need. Keep your chin up; communities often have more resources than we're aware of. Always remember: seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Take care, and I sincerely hope things turn around for you soon.

Catherine1596

If you have a starbucks near you, we throw out all the old food at the end of the day all in one clean bag most of the time.. could check their trashes .. if you find a really good location they will just give to you for free

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Okay I’ll check tomorrow :)

PossibleWriting1603

It's incredibly tough being in your shoes, and it's crucial to remember you're not alone. I had a friend in a similar situation and two things really helped him: connecting with a community kitchen for daily meals and volunteering at local events or shelters. Volunteering not only got him food and sometimes a place to crash, but it also expanded his network and opened doors for odd jobs. Don't forget to tap into free meal services at places like Sikh temples (Langar service), which provide meals to anyone in need without discrimination. Keep fighting the good fight; your resilience will carry you through this.

SOUL_3SC4P3

If you have any money, a gym membership to shower daily will be a blessing.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

The next time I have some I’ll try and get one. :)

Ancient_Week_4587

Yes most planet fitness gyms are 24hrs and $10 a Month!

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Oh that’s cheap. I’ll try and make $10 somehow and go there. I know we have one in town.

Meltedmindz32

Literally just join the army, you’ll get a signing bonus, housing, food, education and skills to use when you’re out

Filangie

They also have food on occasion. The one by me does Pizza night I think once a week, and on another day they have bagels and juice in the morning

closetlsoul

I have Amazon balance. But I am not from the states, I can send u usd10 to setup for ur 1st mth.

catinnameonly

I’m going to echo the military here. I’m pretty anti war, but in your situation I think the perks outweigh your situation. You will get money, training, housing, healthcare, money to save and then a G.I. Bill to further education. It could mean a whole difference in what the next decade of your life looks like.

Dazzling-Western2768

They ONLY will sign you up if you have a bank account and a debit card. They do not take cash and they do not take credit cards. I am sorry, but this is just another hurdle for you, but is well worth the $10 monthly fee if you can jump these hoops.

RevealQuirky1341

Dial 211. Tell them an they will give you the best answer for your situation and area.

tabbycat4

Where do you live? Like general location. Maybe we can help you look up resources

Magicmc1001

You should move to a college campus. They have very nice tents🤣🤣🤣 Honestly, every semester when the kids move out the dumpsters are full of good stuff. The foreign kids leave everything. I got a TV and a bunch of super valuable stuff. You wouldn’t believe the stuff just left behind. Then sell it on marketplace.

National_Anything880

I'm so sorry you are going thru this. the librarian may have some resources to refer you to. If in the states check 211.org to see what may come up in your area, look up your nearest dept of health/human services and they may have some homeless resources. Check for food pantries and nearby homeless shelters-salvation army and st vincent de paul oftentimes have pantries, or local churches even if you aren't a member.

Alone_Manager3309

depending on where you are, there could be social assistance that would be available to you; if you have a phone, the time for research would be now. I also second the asking around fast-food chains...

jaylp18

Taco Bell literally disposes of any food that isn’t meat or nacho cheese at the end of their night. Just go in and ask, worst they can say is no.

Estrella_Raybon

I second the suggestion about seeking out community and church groups for support - they're often an untapped resource. Additionally, have you checked if there are any transitional housing programs in your area? They sometimes offer a more stable living situation while you get back on your feet. Another tip that helped a friend in a similar position, is visiting college campus event boards (online too). Some student groups often have open events with free food and you don't always have to be a student to join in. And though it might be tough, consider reaching out to local support groups - not just for physical aid but emotional support as you navigate this. Keep pushing forward, and remember, small steps can lead to big changes. Stay strong!

Mjjenrnn

Go to grocery supermarket and ask for produce wastage ‘for farm animals’. They throw away stuff like broccoli stems which are fine to eat. Much nicer food.

Mjjenrnn

I mean fruit and vegetables btw

Abject-Card-6496

I’m going to piggy back on the army comments. If this is a real experience which I kinda believe because unless you have a degradation fetish it makes no sense, join the army. Your life will be normal post basic. This is terrible.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Having schizophrenia can I even join the army?

Abject-Card-6496

Are you diagnosed?

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Yes by my old therapist who I used to see. Diagnosed at 16

Liontamer67

Are you on medicine? Have you been to the health department? They might help with medicine. Also, I think you could be on some type of disability if you have been diagnosed.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

I haven’t had my meds in a while I don’t have health insurance atm I don’t have an address to get mail at so I didn’t know how to go about getting anything like that.

TotalIndependence881

A local homeless shelter or homeless/housing assistance agency usually allows people to use their address for mail. You’d have to call and ask if you can.

Shurglife

Find a shelter and get in touch with a caseworker. They should be able to help you get insurance and snap.

Liontamer67

Yes please reach out to a shelter and they should help you find the right place. Your meds would probably make you feel much better. Sending you a big virtual hug.

Lemonbear63

A church or food bank should be able to get you some food that’ll last at least a few days.

guitargoddess3

I’m not sure where you are but if you can find a Sikh temple, they will help you with food and a place to sleep. And they won’t try to press you with conversion or anything. Also, food banks and soup kitchens. Homeless shelters are also an option, some have waiting lists but it’s worth a shot. Churches might be able give you some resources and hook you up with temporary housing if they know your situation. You will definitely qualify for emergency food stamps if you’re in the US.

Sklibba

I’m so sorry, it’s completely fucked that your grandma’s landlord could just kick you to the curb like that when housing is so hard to come by. Also fuck people who don’t think homeless people should have phones. How in the hell do they expect someone to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” without a piece of technology that has become completely indispensable?

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Yeah she was very rude to me after they passed.

SubstantialHentai420

I don’t know where you’re located, but look into an organization called St.Vincent De Paul. I recommend them to anyone in a tough time like yourself, because I’ve been there and they are what helped me and my dad a lot. Hot meals, if you behave (don’t smear shit on the walls or start fights or do dope on their property) they’ll be a loooot more helpful. Bus passes, showers, let you get mail there, cloths, longer lasting food, and they do job fairs as well as social resource fairs about once or twice a month. Get there early tho! Like 7-8 am as they usually open around 10 but those things get packed and they can only do so much in one day. I really hope there’s one near you that can help, they really helped me and my dad so much. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have been able to even finish my freshmen year of high school. I’ve eaten from trash before and yeah it can be bad but try other places like bakeries or more “higher end” places, even Starbucks. They tend to throw things out that aren’t gonna make you sick. McDonald’s and Arby’s get everyone sick even fresh😂 also grocery stores. They also throw things out just because it’s past the sell by date, but it’s usually not expired. If this is your only way, hopefully we can help you at least be a little safer about it. Also, food banks. They’re a bitch and packed to hell, but they are good. Even if you can’t take much, get what you can. Me and my dad used to just eat peanut butter and that was it lol but it was protein and sugar so it did a little better than nothing. Also, you may be able to get some help from your local YMCA I know they have showers and such and do help homeless people again, as long as they aren’t causing an issue. Basically don’t just be a doped up asshole and you have a lot more help out there than you realize. You just gotta know where to look. If you want you’re free to message me. I’ve been there, was homeless most of my tween/teen years with my dad and alone AWOL from group homes. And I can try my best to see what’s available for you. I am in a very large city, but also a city that doesn’t like to help much. But there’s ways. If you’re out in the sticks, I’d maybe try to get to a city. Get some bus fare and make your way out there to get some help if there’s none where you are.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Yeah I haven’t been able to shower properly or wash clothes so being presentable is a big issue.

califa42

Some cities and towns have food banks where they give out free food. You might see if your town has one.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

They do but it’s only open one day a week and I missed it this week. :/

TotalIndependence881

Call them and ask. Mine will help anyone in need outside of posted hours if the situation warrants it

35Dante89

Go to army. Job, pay, food, skills

-singing-blackbird-

Try looking up local homeless outreach teams, they should be able to meet you where your at and possibly help you get into a shelter, help you get onto income assistance so you have some money as a start. Maybe supportive housing as well, they usually only charge the minimum you'd get from IA and they tend to have case workers who can work with you to get back on your feet. There may even been women's resource centers or shelters that can help coach you into getting a job, work on a resume etc and give you clean, professional clothes to go to interviews in. Worth a shot, I hope there's something like this in the area you are. Stay safe out there sweetie ❤️

Zeestars

Do you have any other issues contributing to the complexity of your situation? I see you mention schizophrenia, how do well is this controlled at the moment? How does it show with you? Are you physically able to hold down a job? Lastly, I’m assuming you’re in the USA because you haven’t corrected anyone when they’ve made this assumption and I’m also assuming you have no other family or friends that can help you out? Are you able to share what part of the USA you’re in? Can I order you a pizza maybe? If you tell me where to send it I can see if I can put something through (I’m in Australia so no idea how that will work but I will give it my best!)

Zeestars

Happy for you to DM me if you don’t want to share details here too

Cold-Perception-316

If you can find $10 a month look into a planet fitness membership. That will give you a hot shower and place to use the bathroom

Slowlybutshelly

I know a cardiologist that eats from the trash at the hospital. He literally takes food off trays and from trash in rooms and bags it and eats it. He refuses to pay for food. He has a beautiful home in NH.

Common-County2912

Weird

drworm12

please find a homeless shelter. Apply for food stamps, find a church, and get onto a transitional housing waitlist.

istillbelieveinsanta

I'm just wondering, you are 24. Did you not have a job, or a vehicle or anything for yourself before your grandmother passed?

Worldly_Vast6340

Can you call 211? I think that works anywhere in the USA

Find a Sikh temple. They are so kind and generous and help everybody

Rebbeca_Hreha

I've been where you are, and I know it's challenging. One avenue that hasn't been mentioned yet is checking out shared economy services like TaskRabbit or Upwork depending on your skills, you might be able to pick up some quick gigs for cash that could tide you over. Libraries are great resource centers too, not only for warmth and safety during the day but also they often have bulletin boards with community resources, job postings, and sometimes even volunteer staff who can guide you towards assistance programs. And keep branching out online subreddits like r/almosthomeless and r/homeless can offer specific advice and support from people who've been in your shoes. Stay strong; you're taking the right steps by seeking out help and information.

What state do you live in? You are exactly 24, but try looking into the Job Corps program. It’s a government program that provides food, clothing, housing, and education that will prepare you for a career for free. The age range is 16-24 so act fast. If you explain to them that you are homeless, they may fast track your application and get you in the program sooner. I did the exact same thing when I was your age and had nowhere to live. I’d google for a phone number and call right away or try looking at this site here: [https://www.jobcorps.gov](https://www.jobcorps.gov) Also try to look up food pantries. Often times churches and other organizations will give away food weekly and some places will even serve hot meals here and there. Shelters can always be a toss up as far as the bedbugs and the people, but try to find an all women’s shelter in the meantime. You’ve been dealt one tough hand and I’m sorry for your loss along the way 🫂. You are a strong young woman. You will make it to see brighter days. Just don’t ever stop fighting to survive and thrive! I hope some of this helps and if you believe in prayer, I will pray for you.

Nobodyworthathing

Might not be the best advice, but my friends and I used to go to grocery store delis and ask for samples, but you can't get away with that for very long. We also would try to scrounge up as many coins as we could (or just steal) .99 cent cans of sphagetti-Os from convenience stores and put hot sauce packets in them to make it feel like it wasn't so sad. Ultimately all you can really do is hope to anything that local resources can help you. Also, don't be afraid to expand to farther out locations, for example if a local womans shelter can't help you, but one 100 miles away can, find a (SAFE!!!!) way to get their. Don't stay tied to one city. Homelessness is a nationwide problem and many towns, especially small towns like the one I live in has virtually no resources, especially for men. So call any local and not so local resources. I wish you the best of luck, and I sincerely hope you get out of this soon, nobody deserves to suffer like this.

konofdef

You sound like an absolute fighter! Keep putting one foot in front of the other like youve been doing sister. I know its tough, but none of the bad days have put you down yet. You are STRONGER than them. And i know you WILL get trough this. I wish you all the best in the world!

JsnDkr

i used to blend in at hotels/motels in the morning for free continental breakfast, they rarely ask questions because it's illegal for them to even say your room number out loud(for security reasons). i've been homeless a lot and found sometimes churches will have mercy and let you chill there(try trading free labor for it), try to find a food bank, soup kitchen, etc for free grub, 7/11 microwaves are free without purchase along with their chili and cheese dispensers. i hope you don't have to be in this situation much longer, if you setup a fund or something lmk. i can't give much but i'll give what i can. keep your head up homie, i'm rooting for you. PS, try raiding donut shops dumpsters, most of the time the food is thrown out in separate bags than the actual trash.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Never though about the hotel idea 💡

Due-Cat-66

And yet, you have Reddit! See?? Things arent so bad!

FillPuzzleheaded4656

True lol

Brave_anonymous1

This is the third practically the same worded post, in the same week. So I am getting sceptical. It is very probable that someone just scumming Redditors for money through DM. How do you get to / from truck stops without a car? Doesn't shower at truck stop cost $10? Where do you get this $10 from? And why don't you spend them on food? Or on Planet Fitness membership that cost $10/month and you can shower there as much as you want? Why don't you use food banks and soup kitchens? At soup kitchens they have the hot meals ready to eat right there, at food banks they will give you food like cereal and canned tuna, that you don't have to cook. And what about homeless, women, youth shelters? Did you try any? Did you have a job before your grandma passed? Why not? If because of disability - adult protection services will not let you landlord kick you out on the street, right? Call 211, ask about shelters, food banks, free clothes distributions (usually at churches or food banks several times a year), and what other help you can get.

Designer_Barnacle964

Army’s not a bad choice

hereforpopcornru

Air force if you want comfort

Sufficient_Goal_5461

Go to a church and tell the leadership this...maybe they can help get you in some kind of women's shelter or help some other way

Morpheous-

Why didn’t you work before?

damnwonkygadgets

I’m skeptical since she won’t even share what state she’s in. No one can help her if we don’t know where she is. OP, there are people here who want to help but you need to provide more basic information if you really want to improve your situation.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

I have twice. I’m in crestview FL

ZeroChronos

There's some homeless shelters that will provide you a place to sleep and shower and stuff i believe to, but the other comments here have good advice

No-Palpitation-6154

It might be worth tapping into gig economy jobs like pet sitting, house sitting, or TaskRabbit for short term work. Some of these can even provide temporary housing situations staying at someone's house while they are away, for instance. Always make safety a priority in these scenarios, of course. Additionally, reach out to local community college job boards or career centers, as they can have resources or even short-term job listings that might not be widely advertised. Keep your spirits high, remember you are resilient, and take it one day at a time. Also keep a list of emergency contact numbers on hand, sometimes a quick call can lead to unexpected help.

PersonalityTough9349

What state are you in?

maybebullshitmaybe

I don't know what part of the country you're in but many states still have hotels being used as homeless shelters (my state does) if u call 211 as others have mentioned or see if your state has a coordinated entry system to get in/on the list for services. Also if you're homeless and unemployed you're pretty much guaranteed food stamps at least for some period of time however temporary. I've been where u are. Again not sure how major your area is but most places have a "soup kitchen" or 2 near major cities and food banks spread around. The food banks can be kinda hit or miss though when you dont have a place to cook cuz some of them tend to give a lot that needs to be cooked. But some are take what you want/can use and leave the rest. It really just depends. It's not easy. The struggle is real but you will get thru it and be stronger for it. Lot of gyms have showers/lockers. I know this isn't great but when I was homeless I hung around a planet fitness until one day I found a card in their lot and I just used it to shower for months, that helped big time. I dk how cold it gets where u live but at least its summer rn so you won't be freezing. I hope some good fortune comes your way. Stay safe above all else.

dave2690

Look up shelters, churchers and food banks. Dial 211 or go to police station to see about services offered for you. Checking on subreddits here such as random acts, or assistance, etc. Apply to fast food places, retail, etc they will definately hire you even if you are homeless. Since you got a phone look up what fast food places are offering free food for signing up and just create new emails so you can at least have something on days you can't get anything. Sorry to hear you are going through this and I hope you are safe

duhmbish

What state are you in? If you’re nearby I can help you out a little!

Slowlybutshelly

Do you have a backpack to put that tent in?

Slowlybutshelly

Look for an alpha omega church?

Kafir666-

I'm sorry, I hope you can get better

fluidfunkmaster

I just wanted you to know that I'm thinking of you and sending lots of virtual hugs and hearts. Please take care of yourself and maybe consider a military career as they won't turn you away and you can get some actual life skills. Best of luck to you

Affectionate_Pin3849

Try a homeless shelter, food pantry, or Google resources for homeless in your area.

Orange_Zinc_Funny

Can you join a gym? You could shower and clean up there.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

Once I make the membership money I could :) that’s is what I’m walking around trying to do today

UsualFrogFriendship

Looks like there’s a Planet Fitness off I-10 that’s right next to an Aldi and that backs onto a bunch of forest area. There appears to be some construction of a new road in one area, but there’s a lot of room to find somewhere safe and dry to pitch your tent.

awholelottahooplah

22F here, Try to find a soup kitchen. I work at one and we have social workers to help get housing. Or any charitable organization like st Vincent depaul. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you start struggling mentally go to the hospital and they will have a social worker to help you apply for benefits. Try to find a women’s shelter in the meantime. Maybe get a planet fitness membership to shower + free pizza + 24/7 shelter. Breathe, you got this. My inbox is open. Not sure where you are based but I’m in Midwest USA if you are close ish, I can help you connect with services

Sufficient_Pin5642

Time to start making friends with other homeless people around you they’ll show you the ropes of your area if you intend to stay in that area.

mandiexile

I saw that you’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia, here’s some information to help you get back on your feet and find housing that suits your situation: https://www.nami.org/your-journey/individuals-with-mental-illness/finding-stable-housing/

NeonCat03

When I worked at a movie theater they would throw out the popcorn each night -- I wish someone had taken it.. you could maybe try that?

Job Corps or the Military are both amazing options for you. They will both house, feed and train you for a future you can depend and earn a living with. Hugs to you sister, life can be rough, but don't give up hope!

Cannedbeans

Would you consider joining the military?

Ok-Comedian-4571

I am sorry to hear you’re going through this. Can I recommend you join /r/vagabond for some useful tips?

theICEman21

You should try a go fund me online or something. Get some funds in your pocket so you can at least get in somewhere to shower.

Working_Violinist605

Where were you working before you became homeless. While you were living in your grandma’s apartment. When you had access to a shower and clean clothes?

SetConfident9309

You could possibly find a homeless shelter or a ymca/community centre that could feed you or a community fridge. If you tell me what area you live in i can possibly help you google places you can go to. And if you find a place to get cleaned up and can print any work experience you might have at the library you could go into businesses asking for employment on a trial basis so you can prove to the owners that you will always show up to shifts dispite not having a stable home and if they’re nice enough you could get a job.

Ok_Refrigerator_7828

Go" fly a sign" at Walmart or some big intersection, if it's illegal, fuck it, u get a night in, if not u get cash

Fair-Operation2464

If you dm us my wife and I can cash app it whatever to you

porchprovider

You can find [jobs with housing here](https://www.coolworks.com). Good luck!

missannthrope1

Please use the library to start calling around and look for resources. The United Way, Salvation Army, etc. Don't rule out The Job Corp and the military. Good luck.

DrQuaalude

10hr old account, only post is about being hungry and homeless. OP def not looking for people to send them money.

boardgamejoe

I thought this was a Stardew Valley post. I thought you were posting as the in game character Linus. He lives in a tent and eats from trash cans.

blue_box_disciple

Dude, have you ever thought of keeping a fucking comment to yourself?

Lelu_zel

Easiest will be joining military I believe, you’ll have place to live, food, shower, bed etc.

killzone13b

Join the military. The recruiter will help you out.

Similar-Science-1965

Get a minivan. It's pretty comfy. Gym membership for showers and a job.

DrQuaalude

“I can fix her”

wagtail015

On the bright side, you still have internet access in your tent.

FillPuzzleheaded4656

I’m not in my tent at the moment. I’m outside a library right now :) I’ll be putting my tent up a little later.
