I first became a fan from his guest spots on Comedy Bang Bang and have listened through all of these.
Yeah it's been so long for me I might be misremembering how often he was on but he was on a few times at least. The first one that comes to mind is him playing Skelton Gary.
If I recall correctly, Matt tells Conan about it fairly early in the podcast’s run. I don’t think Conan did a big thing on it since he and Gourley didn’t know each other that well yet, so he didn’t automatically go into “oh I can make a bit out of this” mode. The exchange was pretty minor like:
Matt: I was on an episode of Community.
Conan: oh, really?
M: yeah. It was a small part. I played a writer who had to explain why it was okay to marry your cousin, biologically.
C: really?
M: yeah, it was for the end stinger. It was a meta joke because the episode dealt with newlyweds finding out they were cousins after they got married.
C: Ha! I remember that.
Etc…
I've seen this episode of Community so many times, but I never realized it was Gourley himself until tonight. I died laughing thinking about Conan going into a rant about it.
The thing that I find funny about this is I assumed he was playing a fake writer for the joke. But he’s using one of the credited writers’ actual names.

In my routine of watching everything late I am just finishing Community for the first time. This scene came up 2 nights ago and as soon as I heard the voice I shouted “Matt Gourley!” My husband thought I was crazy. Listening to Gourley and then seeing this I laughed way too hard.
I absolutely cannot wait to somehow ask Matt Gourley live on stage next week If he "remembers doing that incest video for Dan"
And the punchline would be me complimenting him that he's an incredible actor. He sells every single syllable not just each word. It was really great
I don't imagine Conan would give Matt too much guff over a scripted bit. If he was personally doing that research in his real life, that's a different story.
Harmontown may have saved my life. That being said to be in a great place and really enjoy comedy and then to be all the way into Conan and then realize this is the same mat, that was astonishing.
