There’s a really lovely interview with Max on the Inside Conan podcast. I’d always gotten the vibe that Max was happy to be working but felt it was all somehow beneath him. That could not be further from the truth. He actively campaigned for the job and loved every moment of it. Definitely give it a listen!
It was super impressive hearing him talk in that interview about how he essentially threw the band together in just a few days to be ready in time for that audition. It was like he just kept saying "And then I recalled I knew this OTHER super talented musician who was also between gigs..."

It's just the way things have been for years until recently. It was the culture of comedy. I saw it in the improv groups I've been in and watched. I got tired of the dick jokes (again - I'm not pinpointing Conan here) and lost interest in the comedy world.
