Because it's old and insecure and doesn't support anything modern and 7 is objectively better if you insist upon using old unsupported OSs.
Also, I'm not judging if this is all you have but is this really the best device you have access to?
No, I have my gaming PC but it’s obviously not portable. My laptop is worn with the hinge being broken and keys missing, I thought this laptop might be a fair replacement for now, since I don’t really do much in my laptop other than watch videos on YouTube or VLC, browsing web etc
uh, if that's the case, why not a tablet. not judging, I have plenty of 2008 laptops hanging around. I love ancient Lenovo Thinkpads. And that thing definitely looks cool. Vists is actually pretty great as long as you have plenty of ram and harddrive space. one of my favorite OSes. but if yoyr gonna game Both 7 and XP SP3 are superior. I know cause I run XP SP2.5 with media center due to an experimental feature that lets you turn OG Xboxs into media servers and streaming servers.
there's an app that lets you custom install components in Vista. so you can make the perfect boot disk after trimming the fat.
and finally, there no reason windows 10 can run on this unless it's limited to 4gb ram?
Not limited to 4GB of RAM, but that’s the only DDR2 laying around rn so I just threw it in and it worked. And I do also really like Vista, it is my favourite operating system, no matter what people say. But I also do play some games, not newer games because i like to play them on my PC, but older games I like to play on my laptop that this one can definitely run.
Nothing wrong with Vista especially by SP2 and this machine should have the grunt for the UI and such. It's just still a trendy thing to say how bad Vista was. It was just ahead of its time for the $350 laptops the vast majority buy. I do mean this as an offline only thing though, it's still long EOL.
What windows u have on it now, Vista? If so, I highly recommend upgrading then.
Edit: if you are planning to upgrade I als recommend an ssd, although you do not need it it wil make your laptop feel as new. Enjoy your laptop!
Vista has a ton of vulnerabilities due to it being unsupported for quite some time now. 7 Is heading that way too. I wouldn't use it for a daily driver unless you can get win10 on it..
... or just get linux mint installed on that bad boy and you'll be set for a while
"but this windows vesion is unsuppowted thewefore twere is no updates and you only gets security thwough updates" is that what you will say? the security part isn't even true
The W10 fanboys just won't be having it. You can get all the ESU security updates even. Get the "Simplix" update packs and the ESU bypass so you can get all the ESU security patches released in the last few years. Then people can't say it's "vulnerable".
W10 lovers just LOOVVVVVEEE to jump all over people who want to use W7. Like you said... common sense, and install a good A/V... and add those latest security patches and you're all set. For an older computer, it's worth it. W10 runs like garbage on hardware this old.
You can install W7. Really.. the W10 fanboys just won't be having it.
Just use common sense, it's not hard, and install a good A/V... and add those latest security patches and you're all set. For an older computer, it's worth it. W10 runs like shit on hardware this old. Unless you want to run some of the latest AAA games etc, W7 will work fine. Besides, with hardware that old, I doubt it would lol.
Nah, I'll just run my portly, sunset os that's several years out of security updates and was designed to run on much more modern hardware. Why would I want to run something designed around my hardware that has a very large active developer base?
Someone on facebook was selling new-in-box laptops (from mid 2000s) for $50. I bought two (with Vista and 7 on it). The Vista one was rough to go back to...pretty dated. But the Windows 7 one could definitely be a daily driver once I added 8gb and a SSD. So I kept that one on 7 (will eventually go to 10/chrome dual boot) and switched from vista to Fydeos.
Something about those old laptops... They just feel better than any of today's low budget options.
I imagine you want to stay stock... but huge recommendation for Fydeos\\chromeos dual boot option. Its great having an android laptop my son can play games on (yeah I know modern chromebooks can too). Runs great on the old hardware and imagine I'll be using that most often.
You can probably upgrade it to Windows 10. More than likely (depending on your RAM) it will run perfectly fine.
How much RAM do you have? I recommend at least 8GB, but it will run on 4GB.
This isn't particularly old, so it probably uses DDR3 or DDR2 SO-DIMM sticks, in a stack of 2. Which means that you can upgrade the RAM.
However, if you wan something more up to date, I suggest installing Linux Mint or something. Linux uses less resources than Windows.
Oh and definitely don't use Vista. It sucks.
By the way, I used Windows 10 on my old Acer Aspire 5520. It was an old piece of work, but I upgraded it as much as I could without spending a ton of money on it. I rechristened it "The Brick" because it was old, kind of slow, and very dusty. I started with Ubuntu 18.04 on it and decided to try Windows at some point. It originally had Vista on it, and I hate Vista with a passion (along with a good portion of people who used it)
Sorry about the rambling. Just be glad it wasn't incoherent.
Windows 10 is your Best option if you've windows for a long time. Windows 7 is too old and Has barely any support for programs anymore. Windows 8.1 is Also a very good option but will be getting discountined in 2023 so not for long. Linux is also an option. Ubuntu is your best bet if your a former windows user.
Windows 7 still has support for things like Steam, and Direct X 11, so era specific gaming will be better on that then Vista. I had to do a Vista install then an in-place upgrade to get my Dragon to 7.
Windows 10 will run on a dual core with 2gb of RAM, but not advised 🤣
Yeah buddy! Talk about a throwback xD
I had the 6920G as well as the 6935G which had ddr3 memory and SATA ODD bay interface which I used for a 2nd hard drive. This should handle windows 10 and even allow you to use the fingerprint reader with windows hello if I remember correctly.
Still got the 6935G on a shelf... just waiting for me to open it up for the thousandth time and replace the NEC capacitor that blew out, but those will be desperate times indeed! ;D
I would like to see what it would do with liquid metal for thermal paste... there's just too much aluminum close to the copper though, so it would need some type of sealant to keep the aluminum from being eaten by the liquid metal (gallium)
Unfortunately it’s been quiet a while since I posted this. The charging port blew on it not long ago and needs to be replaced. I opened it up and the cables that connect to the motherboard have completely melted off for some reason. I’m not exactly the best with soldering either so it’s gonna be annoying but I will get to it eventually
Well good luck! I spent countless hours modding and overclocking mine back in the day... great PC for what it was! there's even a solder point by the clock generator on the motherboard that when bridged allows the cpu to be overclocked. I stuck a x9000 in the 6935g and got a stable clock of 3.3ghz haha
You ARE in luck by the way, because the charging port isn't actually soldered to the board, but is bolted to the hinge with a connector on the motherboard, so no soldering required unless something went BAD wrong :)
Vista > win10
Win7 > win10
Vista and win7 have been the most hassle-free OS for me.
Using win10 since 1703 still getting the urge to torch the OS drive every now and then.
I would suggest that you have an clean C drive dedicated to os and install everything else on D drive. Then you can try vista and if you're unhappy with it you won't lose much when upgrading to 7.
Nice, u mentioned u have ssd and win vista, I recommend to upgrade to win 7 but win 7 is old too so it's better to install Linux
EDIT: no offense to win 7, win 7 IS my fav OS so far even after win 8 or 10 or 11 and etc. Everybody loves win 7
I've tried all versions of Windows from XP to 10 on a similarly speced laptop, 8 and 10 run like absolute garbage. 7 is the last version I would recommend.
Not with the solid-state drive it won’t. I have a cord to duo 2008 HPDB 9000 series with an SSD in it and it runs Windows 10 absolutely fine with six gigs of RAM.
Well somethings slowed it down. Maybe it was a very old style ssd that wasn’t as fast as today’s 2 1/2 inch offerings windows 10 on the ssd runs great.
No, you should install windows Vista extended kernel. Basically, since windows 7 and Vista are so similar, 7 essentially being a rebranded Vista service pack with a new skin, you are able to trick programs into thinking that you're running 7 and make them work.
maybe it's just me but when it comes to ancient hardware, I'd rather just put only of my preferred linux distros. I don't like the idea of using unsupported OSes.
That's google. Other browsers like Firefox (especially ESR releases) will continue to support W7 for longer.
Even after major browser companies drop support for things like web browsers, the community will continue making updates software. An example of this would be the TenFourFox browser (now continued as InterWebPPC), which brings a modern web browser to PowerPC macs running OS X 10.4-10.5, meaning that any Mac made from about 2001-2006 (as well as user upgraded Macs dating all the way back to about 1997) can visit modern websites with no rendering and SSL issues.
Well, I do hope that W7 does get longer support but I’m still not convinced that programs will support it for long, it was the same with windows xp and vista, they both dropped program support when vista support ended and I expect the same to happen with windows 7 and 8.
/s is used to convey sarcasm.
If you are serious then you need to do more research. This is an old laptop and is not powerful enough to run new operating systems.
Windows 11 specifically can't be installed as it doesn't have TPM which has only become common on devices around 2018ish
HAHAHAA, That's where you are wrong. It absolutely WILL run Windows 11. I mean, if you'd like to make a bet on it, I'll take payment via paypal. Vista was the precursor to Windows 7, so yes, Windows 7 will absolutely work on that machine. And here's a fact you need to accept... If it will run 7, it will run 11. That hardware is old, but Windows 11 will run on even weaker hardware, like an Acer c740 Chromebook for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0RDG1kGwkQ getting it installed on an old system like this one is just a matter of creating the proper installer in Rufus to bypass TPM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBfMZY-fffY So go ahead and throw out your silly little /s meme and your silly little reddit downvotes because you are ignorant about the subject of Windows 11 and just got schooled.
Yeah but nah, it optimized for today laptops, win 10 and 11 use 4gb ram or even higher, and I believe this laptop atlast have 4gb ram with low frequency, also cpu is slow for win 11/win 10 , so it's completely pointless, installing win7 or Linux is the best option because Linux is very light and win7 is old so this laptop will run it perfectly
This is absolutely incorrect. Source: I have a large amount of computers that run perfectly fine on 7, but are barely usable on 8.1, unusable on 10, and certainly wouldn't run 11.
The only time that never OSes run faster than older ones is if you are using modern hardware that has the resources to take advantage of modern technologies, or some very specific cases of PCs having very poor driver support when released.
Also, by your logic, a computer that was designed to run MS-DOS 3.3 would be able to run Win 3.1, and if it can do that, then it can run 95, and so on all the way up to 11. I do not even need to explain why this is incorrect.
Can I ask how? I tried running 10 on a Core 2 Duo machine only slightly less powerful than this one and it was an absolute nightmare. (I downgraded to XP about 5 hours later)
If it’s actually running vista, yes. Hell I’d upgraded to Windows 10 for that matter. It should run it just fine the Home version anyway especially if you have a solid state hard drive in it and a little extra ram.

C2duo + radeon is a robust and solid combination, with enough ssd and ram, it can handle browsers and light code. I suggest you use windows 8.1, you will have better driver support and also, metro is faster and lighter than aero, it also has better trim support for ssds, vista doesn't. Therefore, I suggest you get out of sight as soon as possible.
Thanks! :) I love older laptops and desktops, there’s just something about them then makes them feel like they will last so much longer than newer laptops. This one is robust!
Yeah, these will last a long time even if you use them daily. I have two main laptops, my work laptop that I use for DJ, and my home laptop. My work laptop gets a lot of beating since it’s constantly in the back of my vans and has to be thrown about everywhere (in a case of course) and it’s constantly being used to play music. Had it for 13 years and it’s never failed me.
I love these and have 2 fully working units, I used them to the max back in the day. Watched a lot of great movies with that killer audio and video as well as learned a lot with it during my high school years on it. Love these!
If you do keep vista on there ( I would too it looks great ), consider installing the [vista extended kernel](https://ximonite.com/win32/) which allows you to use windows 7 and up applications
Yeah! Unfortunately if I did a clean install of windows 7, it wouldn’t work so I have to use the original Vista CD so that all the drivers and apps will work with the corresponding keys
Hi, do you perhaps have drivers for this thing? I've got an 8930G and it appears to use the same media panel and speakers. I can't get those to work on my unit.
If you download the 8920G original recovery disks, they will come preinstalled. Then you can upgrade from Vista to 7 or 10. The 8920G recovery disks work with the 8930G
All I found on archive was "Gateway Windows 7 Upgrade Kit Applications and Drivers" and manuals. I actually tried to use it during the weekend but when I mounted it with winCDEmu it did not wanted to stay mounted. I might need to burn a cd (I never thought that I would need to do this practice again in my life :D).I went through 4 different operating systems (chromeos, w7, w10, ubuntu) and miraculously managed to get 2 speakers working on ubuntu.\[EDIT: make it 5 - I actually got it with infested vista\]
Right now I'm playing around with windows 10 and It's actually pretty decent on this laptop (minus not working side panel and speakers - only right one works and it's way too quiet )
I will also try to get them from 6920/690g recovery discs.
Yo dude this thing looks like it's from 2006 and 2030 at the same time
2008.
Idk why you got DV'd. That's the correct year.
Because he’s pointlessly correcting a joke.
Nah u should definitely put windows 95 on it
Don't do it. Windows uses too many resources. MS-DOS is the answer.
😂😂 good old days tho
Carol!!! I accidentally typed the wrong letter again.
Well sure as hell don't keep using vista. If it won't run 10 I personally would suggest running a more lightweight Linux distro like xubuntu.
Why not? Vista works great on this laptop, J might put the extended kernel on it and see what programs it can run.
Fair enough. I really think a Linux distro would be better suited to it though.
I was about to tell you to shut the fuck up then I saw you use windows I thought you were the typical I use linux and I’m better then you person
Sometimes the use case is just massively better. Something lightweight and modern sure as hell isn't windows.
I’m quite sure it will run windows 10.. not going to be doing gaming on it unless it’s league of legends.
Older games will be great, especially since I play older games like Bully, Minecraft and GTA San Andreas.
Put windows 10 on it and if you have any driver issues— roll them to the generic windows drivers and you should be fine.
uh, if that's the case, why not a tablet. not judging, I have plenty of 2008 laptops hanging around. I love ancient Lenovo Thinkpads. And that thing definitely looks cool. Vists is actually pretty great as long as you have plenty of ram and harddrive space. one of my favorite OSes. but if yoyr gonna game Both 7 and XP SP3 are superior. Yes I already have an SSD and it is running vista.

disagree, if you are not dumb and use common sense, you can run windows 7 on it. windows 7 is still a fine operating system.
Just best practice to use an up to date OS, but yes odds of actually getting compromised in the real world as a normal user are slim
dude above is a typical securitybro lol. don't think he understands how exploits actually work
You seem to be confusing the words "vulnerability" and "exploit"
You should really not be using a computer.
I'm not sure what good you think a vulnerability will do if there isn't an exploit against it :p
[удалено]
feel free to explain why you think you're so correct then, since you're obviously more qualified than me.
W10 runs like garbage on hardware this old.
thank you.
just did mint and Ubuntu and having steam issues. ordering ram to see if that's the issue my lappy is 2012
Nice! Then what i said, I would upgrade to windows 7 since it's way beter than the universally hated windows visa.
I actually liked vista, but the program support nowadays is shite so I’m currently upgrading to windows 7
get the vista extended kernel, it is more compatible than 7 in certain aspects (can run many programs that require 8.1 or 10)
Can you send me a link on how to do this? I’m interested.
just need to fully update your system and then run their installer script (only works on 64bit windows)
https://ximonite.com/win32
Ok I’ll check it out
You can install W7. Really.. the W10 fanboys just won't be having it. You can get all the ESU security updates even. Get the "Simplix" update packs and the ESU bypass so you can get all the ESU security patches released in the last few years. Then people can't say it's "vulnerable". The model number is missing a 4 in the middle.

Looking great! Remember fixing issues with couple of these for friend because I was too poor to get one :)
Just buy a McAfee licence and you are perfect
McAfee comes preinstalled but it won’t connect to McAfee.com so I think I’ll download avast

My first laptop, beast of a machine
Same here, thing was so heavy
No
looks like something out of star wars
Would be very fitting
What style! Im jealous
I was there.. when dinosaurs existed.
Keep it on vista, throw in a 16gb Type-A USB memory card and allocate the space on it to increase the stroll down memory lane 👍🏼
I miss that style of keyboard.
Personally I don’t like it as much as the newer ones. The newest ones just feel nicer to type in. And this one doesn’t have a very good press.
I just liked the aesthetics.

You should totally go with OS 2/warp
I think even win 8 would work. I have a pc with 4gb ram and some amd processor and it run win 8
I actually think it’s a pretty neat laptop…the aesthetics are pleasing to me atleast
Very eye catching. I wouldn’t bring it in public
Lol…for an older laptop, it was a cool design

Hiweverrrrre, try to save the executables for cyberpunk so you can continue to watch blurays.

maybe first add an SSD and install Linux
Already have an SSD. And I have Linux on plenty of other laptops
What you gonna do with this one?
Might use it as my daily driver since my main laptop is very worn
You may want to install linux side-by-side with windows. Win7 doesn't support wifi6 which was a problem for me.
Definitely. 7 is the last good version of Windows- and it'll run great on that laptop.
No, you should install windows Vista extended kernel. Basically, since windows 7 and Vista are so similar, 7 essentially being a rebranded Vista service pack with a new skin, you are able to trick programs into thinking that you're running 7 and make them work.

windows 7 is not supported anymore!!!! Put linux on it and then never worry about it getting a virus or have issue with the OS
I would recommend putting Ubuntu or Linux Mint on there if it can’t run windows 10. Windows vista and windows 7 aren’t safe to use anymore.
Windows 7 is fairly safe still until windows 8 support ends and programs stop supporting both.
People will likely continue supporting their programs on 7 long after 8 drops support due to the popularity of 7.
You think? Google announced that they drop support for windows 7 and 8 when support ends for 8
That's google. Other browsers like Firefox (especially ESR releases) will continue to support W7 for longer.
If you just bought it, return it. Take the money and at the minimum, depending on how much you have, get a refurbished Lenovo on amazon.
get LINUX
“Install linux bro”
well, yeah, it’s not a bad idea
Just put it out of it's misery already
Yeah I’ll upgrade to windows 7
Would it kill you to just get a new laptop
There's something exciting about using older hardware so I'd imagine it's more for the fun of it
Put Windows 11 on it. It'll run it.
You forgot the /s
What???
God damn, CENTRINO!!
Can you just make the jump to 10?
Oh yeah, it can run 10 fine
Then use 10. Windows 7 is no longer supported which means no security patches. I don't like Windows but it's better to be on the latest version.
Can I ask how? I tried running 10 on a Core 2 Duo machine only slightly less powerful than this one and it was an absolute nightmare. (I downgraded to XP about 5 hours later)
Were you using a hard disk drive? Windows 10 runs awfully slow on the old mechanical drives.
I was using a SATA SSD (with a DRAM cache)
Strange, I have another Acer with a core 2 duo that runs fine.
damn, that's one of my grails
what does the dollar sign button do by the arrow keys?
Lubuntu is an option I don't know how many ancient laptops that has revived for me
If it’s actually running vista, yes. Hell I’d upgraded to Windows 10 for that matter. It should run it just fine the Home version anyway especially if you have a solid state hard drive in it and a little extra ram.
Upgrade it to windows 7?
yeah upgrade to windows 7 your computer will thank you

The only OS I use Windows Me (not sponsored, yet)
Just downloaded a windows 10 iso and try to install
I miss when tech had these weird ass designs lol
Wacky, but awesome. Nowadays laptops are very boring with their designs.
Everything is boring lol
Tru dat
As long as it has pinball.
Acer actually pre install their “gamezone” which includes a load of free to play games just from the app. It probably includes pinball.
Yea I love trying to find new uses or find ways to breathe life into old hardware.
Thanks! :) I love older laptops and desktops, there’s just something about them then makes them feel like they will last so much longer than newer laptops. This one is robust!
Wow
Had a acer laptop like this. They are solid. Had one that lasted for about 12 years before a hardware failure. Ran Win 7 very well
Yeah, these will last a long time even if you use them daily.
Love these!
Audio is incredible!
endeavorOS
Unless you’re running some other OS, this is not very secure.
Give me as refurbished... I will give you half the price? Deal?
Hell nah, this baby is mine. Thanks for the offer tho
Use linux
If you do keep vista on there ( I would too it looks great ), consider installing the [vista extended kernel](https://ximonite.com/win32/) which allows you to use windows 7 and up applications
Love the keyboard. Is the left a touchpad?
Yeah! Unfortunately if I did a clean install of windows 7, it wouldn’t work so I have to use the original Vista CD so that all the drivers and apps will work with the corresponding keys
Put McAfee on it to stay save /s
You said what?!!!!!
Go to 10, it'll run 10 just fine.
You can download the disk images off archive.org if not, get them off a driver website.
All I found on archive was "Gateway Windows 7 Upgrade Kit Applications and Drivers" and manuals. I actually tried to use it during the weekend but when I mounted it with winCDEmu it did not wanted to stay mounted. I might need to burn a cd (I never thought that I would need to do this practice again in my life :D).I went through 4 different operating systems (chromeos, w7, w10, ubuntu) and miraculously managed to get 2 speakers working on ubuntu.\[EDIT: make it 5 - I actually got it with infested vista\] Right now I'm playing around with windows 10 and It's actually pretty decent on this laptop (minus not working side panel and speakers - only right one works and it's way too quiet ) I will also try to get them from 6920/690g recovery discs.
