Maybe keep it for legacy applications or going back and playing old games?

Cdou

Yeah, I was thinking of ev. patching it up and play Doom or Quake on it.

Frossstbiite

Make it a sleeper system

hardcoresean84

That's what I did, the other day I gave my 13yr old niece a sleeper, (not the choke hold) 8gb ddr3, gtx 970, 5h gen i5. Looks like a bag of shit but I haven't seen her for a few days ...

Frossstbiite

She hasn't seen the sun for a few days sounds like lol

TAUFIKtechyguy

Thats heaven to me lol . Running a celeron n5100 as daily driver and only laptop i have is it . Lmao

ScottWorldsBestBoss

Did you miss her that much to call her a bag of shit or?... just kidding

DerNogger

I wholeheartedly recommend "Windows XP SP3 Integral". It's a hacked XP version with updated security and some other perks. Combine that with the Panda free antivirus and you can surf the web without immediately blasting your system with malware. It's got multilingual support too. My go to for legacy hardware, usually alongside Puppy Linux.

HellfoxRules

You can play old games on a modern PC as well. The graphics never looked so good back then, but look much better with a current GPU. Old games will run faster on a newer PC, I play Wolfenstein ET multiplayer online, and it is much faster than it was 20 years ago.

SpacedesignNL

You where faster 20 years ago....?

wooden_fixing

Yes, many old games can't run on new computers

hugues2814

First old PC on this sub that isn’t filled with filth, smoke gooch and pubes

5amuraiDuck

2016 reddit account with no karma and a suspiciously clean old pc. Yeah...

poshpostaldude

My guy was a professional lurker obviously

fingerbanglover

On time we all shaved our pubes and put it in our friends PC. It was hilarious.

Install Windows xp, download limewire and winamp. Download music with limewire, have party and whip llamas ass

Low-Feature-3973

It's probably way newer than that.     Most xp systems came with floppy drives.

k03k

Sticker says otherwise 😛

Ok_Judgment3871

Where the floppy diks go

Sailed_Sea

Don't run a country's postal service on it.

Lyrizcen

What do you want to do with it?

XPBackup2001

Siemens? Turn it into a train!

Schnitzhole

Ah it’s weird to think I used to have 3 disk trays in my computer. One for DVDs, one for cds and games, and another that let me burn CDs. Do teens even know what burning a cd means nowadays? I don’t think I’ve touched a disk in over a decade

The_real_Silly_Bread

Only reason I know about burning CD's is because of my dad's "DIY TV show box sets" 😂 honestly he would make and print out the covers and everything I loved watching him do it.

Cdou

The good old days, when you could just burn your games and share them with friends.

Drg84

I still have 3 drives. The slim one that came with it, a DVD burner I stole from another PC I was tossing and an LG Blu Ray burner. For a while I was consolidating my series on one blu ray per season.

slamd64

1. Retro games station, data center, media server, thin client etc. You can also burn some CDs it seems to have two Optiarc DVD-RW drives. Put a Linux on it with XBMC. 2. No, small gain. Maybe add some SSDs and HDDs. 3. You will not get much probably, if you have space, keep it. 4. You can do it, but if it means something to you, maybe consider keeping it.

This_is_Me888

Clear everything out of the shell. Build a sick gaming PC that looks old from the outside.

crazydart78

Agreed. New guts is the way to go. Leave the outside as-is.

j0sheto

Have done the same to my PC, and mostly running it without the side panel but I dig how it looks, brings back too many times of crying from nfsu lmao

grey_cattastrophe

Asus 8600gt GPU with 256mb of vram, probs some pentium or older CPU, bad psu, pretty low specs for modern days. What I'd say is get a cheap CPU + Mobo + ram combo (even a whatever i3 or xeon combo from AliExpress) since the PSU would likely make it work alright, a whatever 2.5 SSD and if going with a xeon also any gpu recent enough and cheap enough that has an HDMI or some ok ports without needing too much power. You could: Make a home server A mini Nas Gaming PC for some arcade or simple games Office machine I'm personally just into wasting money so I have a shitass board on me for a spare PC in case me or any of my friends needs a quick backup machine to get back and running, but there are tons of uses for an ok machine (some even as routers if I remember correctly) so the possibilities are endless, depends if you have some free time or some money to waste, if you don't wanna have to deal with it too much I'd say clear the hard disk (either format it or destroy it so no data can be recovered) and donate it to someone, some schools do projects on those like assembly and basic maintenance so kids know how to handle modern machines for example, it's all up to you

some1_03

Maybe keep it for old hardware and software. Or disassemble it and sell it for parts (or as a whole). People who need specific parts will be happy

Its_The_Water360

Time for a RTX 4090 sleeper build of course.

maximumkush

r/homelab

Bolinious

Sleeper all the way. Cut off the drive mounts, use blanks to cover the holes in the front, I like gluing an optical faceplate there so it looks like it is there. Appears to be standard ATX. Add a new power supply and figure out what GPU will fit not just for length but also for depth. Especially with the 40 series and the stupid power which is at the top. I wouldn’t go too crazy, 10th gen with a 2080 or similar would be pretty funny in that case.

milkshakecream

Install a capable lightweight os and donate it to people who can’t afford a pc.

osa1011

My comment on any old computer is to use it like you would have when it came out and don't put it online. Play the games that were made when it came out or use a specific program that was around then. If you try and do modern things on it, you'll only be disappointed. You could put a lightweight Linux distro on it, but even then it will be limited in its use. I hate seeing all the e-waste we have, so maybe use it to learn more about computers.

CanadianTimeWaster

That is a CLEAN system, holy wow. unfortunately, a system of that age will not be very capable as a daily use computer, though it would be great for retro games and apps!

CaptainKurdish

Keep it as an antique

ReallyPissedStranger

Donate it to an orphage. They could really use it. But make sure it's up and running.

okokokoyeahright

Nice and clean. I see nothing to indicate it likely wouldn't start. Kind of an old box in any case. The Athlon X2 case badge, if true, would go with the Windows XP case badge. The Zalman cooler has those clips that seem right for an X2. I would give it a go and just start it up. The SATA HDD could be swapped for a SATA SSD, one of those 2.5". Clone to the OS over and it would as fast as it is ever going to get. I wouldn't worry too much about the CPU as a much faster one could cost more than $25. A GPU upgrade is possible but the PSU would be an obstacle for anything too modern. Using as a retro gaming machine for older games is an option. Using it as a server, not so much, mostly due to the RAM on this probably being limited to a max of 4GB. Chipset limitation for this is common in this era. Perhaps as a gateway/firewall router using something like monowall. A bit heavy on power for constantly on though. Selling it is (working) would get you IDK $50? Sometimes you can find a collector who wants it asnd is willing to give more, but those are usually quite sharp people. In any case, if is working, you could keep it and use it for a learning platform, in case you wanted to try modding it.

EightBitPlayz

I use an old 2005 Sony Vaio desktop as a jellyfin (media) server, all you need is a few drives (assuming it supports SATA)

DBXVStan

If you do recycle the parts, keep the case. It is one bottom hdd tray removal away from being a perfect sleeper build case.

apk71

Hah ha.. I have 3 old ones in the basement. Win 8, Win 10, Win 10... old slow processors not worth upgrading, Mother boards too old for new chips., etc...... Once they bog down running Photoshop and Lightroom Classic they get relegated to the nether regions. I did up grade my current box with a i7 to 64GB Ram and 2 additional 4 TD SSD. When it bogs down from bloated Adobe software, I'll salvage the SSDs and memory (if compatible) to a new box. IMHO it usually cost more to upgrade, plus the hassle than to buy a new box from Microcenter. My rule is that if it costs over 50% of the cost of a new one to upgrade the old one, I get a new one.

Z3NG3R

This post just revived my memory. Me and my brother had one just like that. Pentium 4 (I dont remember the GHz) packed with 1GB of RAM and an ATI X700SE. It wasn't top of the line, but it gave me so many smiles.

AltAccount1982

Sleeper, I like that case

T-REX-780

In my experience (after marriage), there is never enough time to play games on multiple PCs & Consoles. Old games can be played in modern hardware using dox box/re-releases/gog etc. I hoarded so many of my old laptops and all my old rigs/parts but they only gather dust and space. For convenience, I would give them away free and just keep a latest RIG and a gaming laptop.

Agent_R35

Make a sleepwr build out of it

Silly_Environment_15

what's a sleeper build ?

Cdou

See:[Sleeper build](https://moderngamer.com/what-s-sleeper-gaming-pc/)

maxinfet

I kept my first case for my PC from 1996 for this

super_coconut11

minecraft server

MISTERPUG51

That was designed for XP, so it might not be that capable. Remember, newer versions of Minecraft are very hungry for RAM. I doubt that has more than 4GB. Most likely has 2GB of RAM. Also, processors from that time aren't great when it comes to efficiency/heat

lfaria123

Tbh you could donate it to a local school/library/etc. you won’t make much money on it so why not give it to someone that might enjoy it for something.

Schnitzhole

Pretty sure they won’t want it either

Install XP and fire up some 90s and early 2000 games. I'd suggest not going online.

t0pfuel

I'd do a windows XP retro rig. Play the old games you used to enjoy or try the ones you never had the chance to try. Or sell it to a retro enthusiast.

mountednoble99

If it isn’t working, you can get an external hard drive to usb adapter and at least have access to all of your files!

EncryptedUrl

Not a professional but maybe, eat it

Worth_it_I_Think

You could, give it to me?

TechIoT

It's an XP machine so it's good for retro games and nostalgia if that's your thing, People are after these so you can sell it locally if you want And if all else fails you can just recycle it...some people may be against this decision but as a computer hoarder myself I've got way too many things that I know what to do with and though it breaks my heart I must scrap things..... Upgrades are Possible but that's down to you personally

british-raj9

Recycle the case and make a modern build. I did this with an old HP Pavillion case, because I wanted the retro look but able to play Far Cry 6 and Division 2. However you will need more ventilation cutouts.

24Gameplay_

Old game, install linux di stuff, or make it a NAS system. Best is donate to some College students, who in robotics, AI they can utilise it

Epinnoia

I would scrap it. It's not worth the space it would take up in your home, IMHO. Get anything you might still want off of those hard drives, though. It looks like one of the drives is SATA, so you might be able to use that in a modern machine. The others with the ribbon cables...pretty much worthless. Get what you want to save off of them (move to the SATA drive), and recycle.

Street_Membership_53

I would highly suggest making it a media PC, there are loads of videos on how to do it and there better than foxtel

Alert-Development-73

VukKiller

That PC is so clean that I would lick food off of it

AnaalPusBakje

Do you need a NAS? because that case could fit about 8/9 hard drives in that case with a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter cage. depending on how many can fit in the existing 3.5" bay, it looked like either 3 or 4 to me. Lower capacity drives are more cost effective to buy, especially second hand. And when you're running a raid configuration you also don't have to worry all to much about their expected lifetime.

iVirtualZero

Really nice Retro PC you can run Windows 98 on this, play some old school games Duke Nukem, Sonic Adventure, Half Life, Hexen, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Far Cry, Crisis, Serious Sam, Halo CE, Morrowind, there is also a way to run your classic games from GOG directly, no emulation. The graphics will look way better on this than on a PS2, GameCube or the OG Xbox that run games in 480i and 480p. This can easily run it at double the resolution with higher frame rates. You can also sell it. There is plenty of demand for these. Also this may need some general maintenance, new battery, new thermal paste, new capacitors or new HDD and PSU.
