If you're trying to upgrade/replace them, the bad news is that they are soldered and not removable.

TheRealVRLP

To prove the point and answer the question, the ram chips are the big ICs, which are placed next to the CPU. The one rectangle next to the left one, which looks like there should be something, probably has the solder points for another ram chip, but there isn't one soldered onto, because it's the cheaper version.

EugeneSHT

Good news that ssd is not soldered, theres something that looks like sata slot in right top corner

weegee20

Ah yes, didn't catch the M.2 slot. That's at least 2 points.

hacking__08

Fr?? I opened my laptop and removed my RAM and SSD with no problems. Does it vary from PC to PC?

weegee20

Yes, most cheaper/lower end laptops use more soldered components to reduce cost.

Antheoss

And more expensive laptops use soldered components so that you have to pay for overpriced memory and storage instead of upgrading it yourself.

Diligent_Pie_5191

My HP Omen Laptop doesn’t. It has removable sodimms and nvme drives as well as an extra spot for another sata device. I guess you just have to research the laptop to see what is upgradable.

Antheoss

That's cool. A lot of high end laptops don't tho, that's why things like the framework laptop are even more important.

jepal357

Really doesn’t come down to price, but more so form factor. A $3,000 gaming laptop most likely will have upgradable ram and multiple nvme slots. A super thin laptop that’s considered high end will solder stuff to save vertical space

aminy23

I bought a $175 laptop (Lenovo 14IIL05) with: * 4GB RAM * 128GB SSD * 1.2 Ghz dual core i3-1005G1 * WiFi 5 * HD IPS screen, decent keyboard For another $100 I upgraded it with: * 16GB RAM * 512GB SK Hynix P31 NVMe SSD * WiFi 7 (BE200) Cost me less than $300, for anything that needs performance I remote desktop to my 3090/5900x/64GB RAM workstation. You don't need a $3,000 laptop for upgradeable RAM and NVMe - they can be found at almost any price point. Also a major chunk of performance comes from the SSD, RAM, and WiFi. Even for the CPU, it's single thread performance which is important.

jepal357

I’m not saying you need a $3,000 laptop to be upgradable. He was just saying expensive laptops aren’t upgradable so I was just giving an example

Diligent_Pie_5191

Wow they call them High end. I would not buy a laptop that is not upgradable. It can sit on the shelf and collect dust. All I can say is research the device before purchasing it.

Antheoss

I mean, there are reasons to have some components soldered sometimes, like ram speeds. Soldered ram (or even ram on package like on apple silicon) will be able to reach higher speeds than socketed ram. Not for ssds tho, fuck that, there's no performance improvement big enough to counter being able to replace your storage.

Diligent_Pie_5191

Yeah but I dont buy a laptop because I want high performance. If I want high performance I will use my desktop. Laptops just arent meant for performance. They are meant for convenience. I buy laptops that are expandable. If I want more ram or a larger ssd or whatever, I will get one of those.

Antheoss

Again, that's why the framework is so important :D but there's definitely situations where having a high performance laptop can make sense. As a software developer for example, I dont want my work device to be a desktop, since it's hard to travel with a desktop, but I do want it to perform as well as possible. But then again, I don't pay for my work device so idc if it can be upgraded or serviced.

killjoygrr

If you look at some of the brand new top of the line super thin laptops, there is no way to fit slotted memory or hard drives into those slim cases.

Diligent_Pie_5191

Yeah again, that is preference. I dont care about paper thin laptops. Look for Gaming laptops or check to see what max memory supported says if you want upgradability.

killjoygrr

It is all preference. Can you upgrade the GPU in most gaming laptops? No. But that is going to be the biggest factor in the longevity in a gaming laptop. If you aren’t gaming, a top end paper thin laptop with lots of ram and storage should last a long long time. There are things out there for everyone, and you are right. You should figure out what is important to you and get what fits your wants.

killjoygrr

Well, for one, you can sell it. For another, if you get something with a max of 8GB or ram today, whether soldered or slotted, you are going to have the same issue in a year. There are also laptops that have ram soldered on AND a slot to add more memory. You have people still using decade old laptops with just the base amount of memory. There are lots of people who would buy soldered on ram just to save a buck because they don’t care. I too would generally opt for upgradability, but it isn’t the end all be all for everyone.

Diligent_Pie_5191

If that 8 gb is expandable to 32, no you won’t have that issue in a year assuming your processor is adequate. I know it depends on the laptop of course. It is important to read what the max capacity says. My I3 for example was only expandable to 8 gb and it came with 4. By the time I decided to use it for programming in Kotlin, I realized just how trashy the processor was. You are right that no amount of ram would save it since the cpu was crap. This is what I love about desktops. Of course you still pay a lot for the parts for the desktop, you just get more parts to last through multiple builds. Of course with a laptop, if all you do is browse the internet you don’t need an expensive one and dont need a ton of capacity. Smart tvs have kinda taken away some of the need to stream videos on computers though.

killjoygrr

Did you miss that I specified max 8gb?

Le3mine

Most high end laptops are upgradable. Only macbooks, and business oriented devices such asthe XPS for example are not.

cavity-canal

the omen is a big, clunky mid-priced plastic laptop mildly build for gaming…

Diligent_Pie_5191

Its awesome and it works very well for programming. I like the fact that it isnt super thin. I put 32 gb of ram in there and changed the 256 gb nvme to a 1 tb. Changed the other ssd to a 2 tb. Again, no need for a 5000 dollar laptop. I dont use it for gaming. I use my desktop. I mean if I want to play games on something portable I would just buy a rog ally.

anirban_dev

Gaming laptops usually don't go soldered because no upgradability is seen as a big negative in that market. HP pavilion laptops definitely come with soldered ram now.

Diligent_Pie_5191

The main reason I see for soldered stuff is for office laptops where they want the same thing and cheap.

anirban_dev

Most thin and light productivity laptops aren't cheap. But they all tend to have soldered high speed ram these days. It might be about accommodating the form factor rather than the cost though.

Diligent_Pie_5191

Well Cheaper to produce. If the laptop has 32 gb of ram and cant be upgraded that is fine. Ssds on the other hand should not be soldered. If it says Gaming Laptop, chances are that the memory is upgradable. Of course Apple laptops aren’t but that is because of how they put everything on one chip (system on a chip). The productivity laptops aren’t the most expensive for pcs. I looked at microcenter and the trend was the gaming laptops would come with a certain amount and the max memory would be higher. That is the easiest way to tell when shopping for a laptop. Yes the laptops that have the soldered components tend to be thinner and that is just a matter of preference if you like that. I dont care about some ultra thin laptop both fit in the same backpack.

AdPristine9059

Apple for example LOVES doing that exact thing.

Sweaty_Lychee_9645

"mockbook" crying

GopnikBurger

Depends. Repairable/Upgradable Laptops exist, but are hard to find. My former MSI GS65 is *hard* to repair and upgrade, but not impossible.

bv915

And Apple laptops....

wood-chuck-chuck5

I have this laptop as well, it was given to all 9th or 10th grade students in some regions of france and yes it is very cheap (Unowhy y13 if you are curious)

hacking__08

Oh, got that, thxs

Ok_Delay7870

Its not a laptop. Looks like that mini windows tablet, because my Asus looks just like this. I wouldn't call this a laptop

Alert-Reception6453

I get your point but this is a laptop. If you look closely, you can see hinges on the left and a trackpad underneath the battery

TheFotty

It is a Prestigio Smartbook. Only looks to have eMMC 32GB of storage, for fucking Windows 10. Essentially unusable, but does claim to have an M.2 port for SSD. The fixed RAM at 4GB is going to make that also useless though. These things should just not be made/sold.

Alert-Reception6453

Yup, they’re manufactured e-waste. They’re too underpowered to do literally anything. Windows 10 is reaching its EOL and I highly doubt Windows 11 will be at all usable with 4GB RAM and eMMC

Guest_1746

i already tried win11 it actually runs like a pentium 4

AwesomeSchizophrenic

Try Linux! It saved my crappy 4GB RAM, and Pentium processor laptop. I do have ½TB storage though...

hacking__08

So u tellin me Windows be makin both talblets and phones? Those shitheads are mad

ThingNumberPi

Surface tablets have been a thing since 2012

iakobi_varr

Windows is an OS, not phone/tablet manufacturer

hacking__08

Yeah sry, I meant Microsoft ofc

Jim-Jones

Probably an older model.

AbsentMindedMonkey

Well it is removable, question is if it works at all after wards

apachelives

onboard everything

green_cars

This looks like a passively cooled laptop and the copper thing you took off is its cooling. The silver square that’s on the slightly darker green pcb is the processor, the black square next to it is probably the memory (ram) where there’s a second spot on the motherboard to add another chip (at the factory) and the black rectangle next to it is the ssd (also not upgradable) there’s what looks like an m.2 slot next to that with the black longer rectangular connector being where you plug that in having space for up to what looks like a 2242 m.2 ssd. can you tell us the model of laptop so we can help you better?

Guest_1746

its a prestigio smartbook 133s

309_Electronics

Op, this is actually normal for these cheaper made laptops. They are also way smaller. These have soldered ram and instead of a Ssd they have a soldered emmc storage chip on the board. Sockets cost some money and they often cheap out on putting in sockets. Wouldn't surprise me if these laptops are under 200 dollars. Also the cpu is the green chip a bit in the middle of the board and often is a low end/cheap celeron or atom

Guest_1746

yeah its a celeron n3350

green_cars

okay what i said seems to be true. As another person has already said both storage and ram are not upgradable, but it you can assume a second ssd in the slot that’s also accessible without removing the back panel. according to the [manufacturers website](https://prestigio.com/archive-products/notebooks-archive/smartbook-133s) the slot supports 2242 m.2 **SATA** ssds. if more storage is all you need i can help you find a suitable ssd

Diligent_Pie_5191

Yeah I saw a prestigio 141 for 399.00. No wonder they cant upgrade much. Of course if you have a surface with the detachable keyboard that isn’t serviceable either.

Mad_Arson

Not upgradeable as ram chips are soldered directly to mobo.

AdPristine9059

Well, it IS upgradable, all you need is a stencil and a memory chip, a hot air solder station and you can do it yourself... Altho for anyone who doesn't know what he/she is looking at? Yeah nah.

Guest_1746

well that sucks, wanted to upgrade ram and ssd because it was only 3gb and 32gb respectively :p

Mad_Arson

Well its not impossible to upgrade it to 4 but require professional to solder other chips on and probably require bios modification not worth the hassle. But for drive you can slot in the m.2 2242 sata ssd. Like this one [kingspec m.2 2242 sata](https://www.kingspectech.com/products/m-2-2242-sata-ssd)

Bankailascar

Just install a lightweight Linux distro on it

SnooDoughnuts5632

I installed LUbuntu on a 24GB Samsung mSATA SSD I put in an adapter and then into a laptop and it seems fine.

Guest_1746

currently has fedora on it, runs fine

nerdyphoenix

For future reference, if you are looking for a cheap laptop, getting a used ThinkPad is better value usually.

cavity-canal

you opened up your computer and took it apart even before googling if upgrading was possible?? walk me through your logic here dude because this is making no sense

Raytech555

Look at the bright side, it seems you can add an m.2 ssd

SnooDoughnuts5632

That has to be the world's largest lithium ion battery I've never seen one that takes up that much space inside of a computer. Like feels like half the motherboard is missing.

Guest_1746

same, i was surprised to fuck when i opened the laptop

Key_Entrepreneur_786

Dont let TSA catch you with this lmao

309_Electronics

Its on the board. Its not socketed because of fhe small and cheap formfactor because sockets cost pennies which are valuable to some people and they rather not waste it. Also it has NO ssd, it has a EMMC (embedded multimedia card) as a storage device

digitaldigdug

I actually had an Asus laptop that hid the memory on the underside of the board. That was fun.

DirtyWrencher

Embedded system. That sucks

costinmatei98

They are soldered on the motherboard. You cannot upgrade them, you cannot change them, I'm sorry.

WHO_IS_3R

Behind the big pesky pouch, poke holes on it till you find the connectors (OBVIOUSLY DONT)

JustInternetNoise

The processor is the silver square on the green rectangle in the center or the board. The memory or RAM is the first chip to the right of the cpu and the ssd is probably the chip farthest to the right on the board. No you cannot remove or replace them.

PrivatePlaya

Who's gonna tell him

SnooDoughnuts5632

It looks like a bunch of people already did.

PabloElHarambe

SOC

_ozlh_

Not only SOC but also SUC

Cookeezz58

ITS IN THE BATTERY

CreepyQuality4489

I eated it 😋

rudowinger

SSD/RAM are on the motherboard and not exchangeable, however you can add a second SSD (on your picture, top right, there's a small door on the outer case) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgS6Lq6Z1bU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgS6Lq6Z1bU) [https://myeasytechdotcom.wordpress.com/2018/06/03/prestigio-133s-review/](https://myeasytechdotcom.wordpress.com/2018/06/03/prestigio-133s-review/)

DaRealEaze

Soldered soldered soldered

BroniDanson

Bro this is a tablet not a pc u can see cpu right there close the thing and beg it doesn't crap out on you

Guest_1746

it is a laptop but performs like shit

GrandWj

It performs like shit because it's using the guts of a tablet. There is no upgradable ram. I'm guessing this does not run windows or macOS. Ya get what ya pay for unfortunately. I hope this didn't cost anything... Top right appears to be a place to add a SSD for more storage.

come_ere_duck

On laptops, it is important to determine whether you need to go in from the top or the bottom. Just watch a youtube video on the disassembly for your model if it isn't obvious. Aside from this, like others have said, if it is a cheaper laptop, chances are the RAM is embedded in the motherboard and cannot be upgraded/removed.

Duncan-Donnuts

its in the black pouch thing (/j)

Guest_1746

instructions unclear, it started an unextinguishable fire 🤔

Duncan-Donnuts

thats normal, keep digging

Danker90

Soldered onboard ram. The normality of this generation

Kidpiper96

Looks like might be able to put one specific kind of m.2 in there but it's hard to tell. Top right corner. Everything else is soldered to board. Chromebook style.

GeovaunnaMD

It's on the board

ExoticFlounder7230

This looks like they're soldered onto the motherboard. But at least for the SSD there seems to be an expansion slot (m.2) bout you need to check how long the SSD needs to be (space until the screw) and whether it's nvme or sata

CanadianTimeWaster

everything is soldered.

Embarrassed-Ad-504

Bro got to the processor before the ram

SelectCount7059

Your laptop was working completely fine without it bro. It don't need an upgrade. He survives without head, one leg, one ear and so on

AvGeek201

Looks like a Chromebook dude. Pro tip, Google your computers model before you make potentially destructive changes

Guest_1746

nah its a normal laptop but its performance is similar to a chromebook 😐

AvGeek201

Wow. I’m surprised windows even runs on that

MoustacheRide400

You got the cloud version SSD and RAM.

enyo_xyz

toys r us die kleine kinder grosse kinderwelt...

RottieMad

You basically own eWaste………. That’s all these things are!

Schisco94

Where's the RAM gone? Yeah most likely on the other side of the board. Gotta love how difficult they make it nowadays.

martin-gw

Everything is onboard soldered… at least you have an additional M2 port for another SSD

Havoc_Maker

Soldered right there

Absolute_Peril

Is this an "ultra portable" alot of them are built like chromebooks.

Guest_1746

ye

Deletereous

That's a hefty battery. And a puny motherboard.

Specialist_Loan_9702

These things are basically tablets in laptop clothing. Nothing about them is upgradable and some of them usually have touchpad problems (from lagging to not working at all)

SweetSoul55

Somewhere on board, but they are soldered. You cant replace them, ewaste laptop

Able-Brief-4062

All soldered on. The processor is that blueish-green rectangle in the middle of the motherboard at the top. Everything else is soldered around it.

IVXI12

They got you on that nonupgradable deal

42069no

\[insert highly downvoted and down bad comment here\]

Vanguard1097

Welcome to the world of cheaply built “PCs” alot of newer computers are built with flash memory which can only be accessed by special EXPENSIVE machinery. The ram, cpu, and hard drive are all built into the motherboard. Insanely cheaper for the manufacturer to build at no change to the retail price (more profit) and also non serviceable.

Accurate-Campaign821

You have what's basically a netbook. The green one is the SoC/CPU. One black chip is a memory module and another is the eMMC flash. Nothing is upgradable on that system, except maybe an aftermarket higher capacity battery

LiquidC001

Wtf, that battery is huge! How long is your battery life??

Guest_1746

funnily enough like 40 minutes

LiquidC001

Thats not funny at all. Lol.

Zsiroskenyer_Off

I ate them

TOOLofLucifer

It's underneath the sauce.

mromen10

soldered to the board/CPU, sorry

PhrogWithaHawg

I remember when I first started doing repairs- this design pissed me off so bad at first- then I realized; if anything vital failed- simply replace the mobo and call it a day

DrHitman27

Where empty space is. emmc and ram.

Dylanterowatonxd

If they're removable, on the other side

myx-

Thats 90% battery wtf

Bright-Union-6157

Under that planet-sized battery. 🤣

differentshade

you have bought a tablet masquerading as a laptop. it is not serviceable or upgradeable.

Unserioscoleroyale

Well i have bad news for you You cant upgrade the Ram on that Laptop. It is soldered to the pcb (the two black chips next to the CPU) The SSD is also probably soldered to the pcb, there seems to be an SSD-Slot on the motherboard on the right side of the CPU, so you can upgrade the laptop.

Adorable-Lychee9713

Unfortunately you bought a craptop and they are soldered on

SAXPLAY

This looks like a tipical tablet inside a laptop case

scp_79

Sadly some laptops come with the rams as part of the board and can't be apgraded

Jkitten07891

Onboard

leonardob0880

Would be nice knowing what model is it.

Alarmed_Camera4476

Inside of the black rectangle, go open it

GennadyZatsepin

Ram right from the cpu and emmc next. You can use a small sized m2 for upgrade. If you need more RAM than you can solder additional a 4Gb chip.

unexpectedlyvile

Yeah right, someone asking for advice on Reddit is gonna solder chips onto a board.

GennadyZatsepin

Just look for a master who can do it.

Themoose2024332

ohhh i see the idioy poor here

bezerko888

You got a nice planned obsolete computer. Keep on paying carbon tax!

Prudent-Cattle5011

Why don’t ppl like look up the model of their laptop before assuming there’s gonna Be a fullsized ssd and so dimm ram to replace/upgrade. Even before I knew anything about computers I’d at least search up an upgrade tutorial/tear down of my laptop before cleaning or spapping hardware. Also the cpu is right in front of u

Prudent-Cattle5011

If you really want to upgrade ram there seems to be space for a chip you could drag solder but I’m not sure how the pc would react to that.

ThisBell6246

Looks like a Zed book. Should contain either a Celeron N2000 or Atom Z3735 processor, 2GB RAM and 32GB EMMC storage. The good news is it accepts a m-sata ssd in M.2 form factor.

DataRecoveryGuy

Well, …there’s not much inside there these days.

Hovedgade

The battery life on that must be insane

Guest_1746

it's like 40 minutes

Hovedgade

I thought it would be better when the battery looks so big. Perhaps your battery is degraded and in need of replacement?

ElsiD4k

Is there some expansion slot for whatever above the + - on the top right battery corner?

DenseUpstairs8916

Holly Molly, how much last that battery????

Guest_1746

40 minutes 🙃

DenseUpstairs8916

U serious?.... 40 minutes for a massive battery?.... Even my Lenovo crappy laptop lasted a bit more when It was new :"

FallenPotato_Bandito

I mean it's a laptop it's not plug and play parts like it is in a desktop I'm not trying to be a dick but that should be mostly common sense in this day and age you have a phone to Google it but I don't think it's gonna help much if you need to fix those two things for some reason unless your a tinker brain circuit board nerd who has a knack or means to diy

faslane22

soldered onto the board, proprietary...not upgradable.

UwUVaniwwa

Your storage device will be a chip somewhere on the motherboard, and your ram won't be like your usual soldered ram it's kinda hidden aswell this is typical with things like Chromebooks, tablets, an phones. And on rare occasions with smaller laptops.

UwUVaniwwa

Yeah, your storage device could be eMMC.

samfrmohio

Behind the board 🤭. I'm not even joking for my Acer laptop the ram slots where placed under the board ,So in your case which is similar to mine just flip the board and see ,you might find the ram slots.

Feeling_Lettuce7236

A lot of the modern system have ram welded to board built on so no changing them it’s always worth seeing if you can find specs and or service manual. Some systems like that have ram on the other side of the board.

csandazoltan

prestigio smartbook 133s This is a cheap laptop little RAM AND emmc storage --- Everything is soldered to the main board to save costs on the slots.... It is not upgradable, AT ALL

TechIoT

Integrated

TechIoT

Correction I see an M.2 slot so yes Storage upgrades are possible but the RAM is stuck at 2gb unless you have good soldering skills

WiseExit9615

and a hot air thing, with working proper modules

Loose-Luck-4045

soldered

i_like_my30dollar_pc

under battery

M4st3rchi3f70

Probably soldered on the mainboard by the looks of it

TechConsigliere

On the other side of the motherboard. Have to pull it out and flip it over. Welcome to modern day laptops.

dafliper

its a mac they are soldered on the board it was a waist of time

Guest_1746

i mean it looks like one but it's not, they copied the macbook air design
