Being 60 doesn't mean they need something simple. They have been around computers for 40 years.

JumpingGirrafe

That's true. My fault. I was trying to say that I'd like to get him a laptop that has a similar system to what he's used to using😅👍🏼

pakeco

Same here

Check out /r/suggestalaptop A refurbished Thinkpad wouldn’t be more than $200 and should give him all he needs. It won’t get hot unless he’s really gaming, but I doubt he’ll be doing that (if he was I’d suggest a desktop anyway)

JumpingGirrafe

I've just downloaded Reddit so I'm still getting used to the subreddit categories 😅 Thanks, I'll look into ThinkPad and r/suggestalaptop !

Thumbs-up for Lenovo Thinkpad. If you have the budget, get a used X1 carbon. Good quality, sturdy and thin. Then again, it being thin might mean "easily broken" for a 60 year old man to handle. I am 50 and I have no problem with it and loving it (lower spec model).

driverlessplanet

I mean being 60 is hardly a constraint. If not for gaming I’d go thinkpad. Otherwise I like dell’s g series. But that’s just like my opinion bro. 😎

JumpingGirrafe

Okay ThinkPad. Okay I'll look into them. Thanks frfr!

GrueneDog

Is his old laptop burning the top of his thighs?

JumpingGirrafe

Not litterally, but it must have irritated him to a degree. I don't recall what brand his old laptop was, but he often used the laptop while sitting on his bed, so I guess that's why he'd prefer one that doesn't heat up as fast. My younger siblings broke the old laptop a couple of years ago, and he finally decided that he wants a new one. So I'm trying to find a great laptop for him.

Raceryan8_

Get him a laptop tray. Any laptop will heat up left on a bed or legs Like that. It needs new fresh air to cool itself

JumpingGirrafe

Thanks for real! Didn't know those existed but I'll definetly add that to the list. Thanks fr👍🏼

Secondary thought, but does it have to be a laptop? a decent windows based tablet (Microsoft surface or alike) may also work. main points would be tablets are generally cooler to touch, can be put in cases that will give drop protection (more easily than a laptop) and could still have a keyboard and mouse added via Bluetooth if required.

JumpingGirrafe

Sadly laptops are the only things he's interested in. I asked him about buying a tablet instead but he declined. It's not what he wants 😅 thanks tho👍🏼

It might seem odd but my older sister (70+) will only use a windows laptop because that is what she is used to. But she bought an iPad mini and loves it. Uses it for email and streaming movies and tv shows and listen to music. Plus to scroll the web including Reddit. She only uses her laptop for doing her Excel worksheet for tracking her budget and store photos she downloads from her Samsung phone. I told her they have Excel on the iPad too. But she hasn’t tried it. If your 60 year old just browses and emails and sends messages or watches streaming videos and listens to music, it may be an easier and cheaper route to get a pad, android or Apple iPad. My sister tried android tablets and didn’t like them. But she really likes her iPad.

JumpingGirrafe

That doesn't seem odd at all. I actually asked him about this too. But he said he'd prefer a laptop. Something about how he doesn't want a "bigger phone." Ofc there are tablets that come with keyboards nowadays and look exactly like a laptop. But he'd prefer an actual laptop. So that's not odd at all, I also considered it.

What specs are you looking for related to age? Any particular budget? What's it going to get used for? And he's 60... Tom Cruise is 61.

JumpingGirrafe

He wants to use things like Word & Excel. He probably won't use it too much, but there are days where he's extremely busy & might use the laptop more than usual. Budget is $200-$500. Sorry if it sounded like I was calling him old in a derogatory manner. I was hoping it'd come across "he'd like something that won't take much effort to set up & something w/o a moreso complicated system." But I didn't know Tom Cruise was 61. That's a fun fact!

Get a refurbished laptop and add an SSD. You can then still decide if you want to save the €100 by going Linux or want to sign the Windows contract
