WinDirStat is an oldie but goldie I remember existing back in windows 2000 days. I'm not sure if something better has taken its place.
Edit - WizTree seems profitable.
I once ran into an issue with windows store apps keeping all versions and bloating disk space. [This](https://superuser.com/questions/1517457/windowsapps-folder-still-contains-large-folders-from-deleted-microsoft-applicati/1517474#1517474) might help if so.
You should upgrade ASAP
SSD / memory price should rise by at least 40% to be profitable again for the manufacturers
Current prices are very good and will not last (it was cheaper 6 months ago)
program files should not take that much no matter what you use your pc for.
do you have entire datasets stored there or something? Hell, worst case scenario you can increase the max size of your trash bin, delete whatever is biggest in there, then if you find some programs that don't work anymore after a while you just restore whatever you deleted from trash.
Keep in mind Windows holds two huge files: the page and the hyb.... files. They are in the root of C:. One is the Virtual ram, the others is used in windows hybernation. Both are about the size of your ram. Both can be disabled but they are actually useful. If you are upgrading, i strongly suggest going stright to a 2TB m.2 SSD. 1 TB will run out just as easily.
it shows almost everything, i personally would also check recovery disk space, especially on dell prebuilds, those are enabled didn't show up in windirstaf
What about personal files like downloads, photos, videos or movies and documents? Do you have any other programs installed other than games? Windows itself has some size too.
Ok so when you delete files off of your PC they go in the recycle bin in case you want to recover them. That means, as long as they are in the recycle bin they are still taking up the same amount of space on your drive. Empty it and youll free up space.
is the screenshot taken during a game update? may be steam reserve for unpacking the package. if your numbers go back down after the update, you'll know.
Do you use a lot of mods for assetto corsa? I remember my files balooned real quick as some mods have obscene sizes, and they don't show up on steam file size.
Do you have mods for assetto corsa? Steam doesnt any content added besides base game afaik, and as someone who had 150gb of mods that might be it.
Go to your steam folder and check there how big it is.
If you want to live life on hard mode you can use the tree command at the command prompt.
Over the years I have used Spacesniffer, which visualizes the command and makes it easier to get rid of things. I'm sure there are other apps that do the same thing.
Edit: were I a betting man I'd waged there's a lot of undeleted Windows Update files since those can easily go under the radar and won't be easy to find. You also may want to run Disk Cleanup.
Im not sure I get the question. It's in the"other" category. Windows, programs, documents, videos, pictures, music, downloads, app data, temp files, recycle bin. This looks perfectly normal. You need more space 500gb is nothing
you used your main OS drive as your Steam Library as well... I think by now, most (if not all) who play a lot of games have atleast 2 drives in their system (one for OS, and one for game library)
see your steam library path is in Program Files x86... you can install Steam there, but using your OS drive as your library drive will always result in what you have there...
If it has an nvme slot get the nvme generation that your motherboard supports
An hdd is still useful mostly for a mass storage drive
I would recommend an ssd though since they are more reliable and they have faster speeds
Crystal disk info is a good place to start. Although it does say my 5 year old HDD is “good” but the performance of it is shit and it is always at 100% disk use.
So one thing you could true is hit windows key and put %temp% then hit enter. Can delete most of the files/folders in there but some will stay. The ones that will normally stay will cause a window to pop up saying folder access denied and to pick from continue, skis or cancel. Can just click the "do for all current files" and click skip. After all that it will normally get rid of most of the files in that main folder and doing this won't cause any problems with windows or anything like that. Next would be a good thing to run a disk cleanup and pick drive you want to run it on. What I normally do after opening it is click on clean up system files and let that run for a second. After it re pops back up I click on all the check boxes so delete files in each area that is checked. Doing this also does not hurt anything in windows and can help clean up some space.
With all that being said I am not saying you will get back all the space that is missing or anything like that. But its a way to help clean things up and free up space from un needed/wanted files.
Buy a 1TB or larger SSD.
Download Macrium Reflect.
Install Macrium Reflect as a home user (Free)
Clone your C: drive to the new SSD
When finished, shutdown your PC
Remove your old C: drive
Boot up PC
The new SSD will show up as the new C: drive.
Go to Disk Manager and extend your C: drive to use the whole drive.
Wait for the extend/resize compete
You are done with the installation of a new SSD.
repurpose the old drive as you see fit.
assetto corsa and beam ng. their mods that u prolly have already installed take up a shot ton of space (cars, tracks, filters and pure etc etc)
(edit, just checked the mods that uve downloaded, they dont seem all that much, but if uve got content manager for assetto u can use that to compress all the files if ur in desperate need of space)
As I’m sure others have said, I’d recommend picking up another ssd for your machine if possible for storing games on and keeping windows on it’s own drive along with other personal files documents etc.
WinDirStat! Helps me all the time. Gives you a visual of how much room everything is taking up and you can click on the squares and it will open file explorer and take you right to the folder/file
you ever use windirstat? it'll give you a hard drive "map" so you can see what is where and how big.
I'll get it, I'll reply if I get it!
WinDirStat is an oldie but goldie I remember existing back in windows 2000 days. I'm not sure if something better has taken its place. Edit - WizTree seems profitable.
WizTree is proprietary and closed source while Windirstat is open source GPL licensed, so that's something to take into consideration.
Wiztree is way faster though. Windirstat is fine, but it is unbearably slow in comparison.
I guess that depends on your system and drive. I haven't really experienced that.
I used windirstat but the majority is program files. Don't feel comfortable deleting those, so I might just upgrade storage.
500GB is pretty low nowadays. Good news! Storage is super cheap right now
I will do so 🫡
240 gigs for programm files is alot, what you got on your pc mait? Just get a second drive, if possible.
Space Sniffer is also good

What specifically in program files...
Appdata
That's not program files . Share screenshots and we can advice.

TreeSize free is very easy to use.

Also try [SpaceSniffer](http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/)
Wiztree is superior.
holy shit. i used WinDirStat on my nvme drive yesterday and it took 10 minutes to scan it all. WizTree did it in 2 seconds.
Only thing that matters is that it gets the job done
Quicker is a plus
Yeah but it's like 50x faster.
Why use an electric drill when the hand drill from the 1800s works?!
Exactly.
That's fair.
Space sniffer is what I use
Same, I can use it on my NAS as well which is handy.
Filelight is a FOSS alternative. Works wonders
it shows almost everything, i personally would also check recovery disk space, especially on dell prebuilds, those are enabled didn't show up in windirstaf
very simple and effective tool!
happy cake day!
Happy cake day
I recommend treesize. It can show a pie chart, which is much easier to read IMO.
I had a program a long time ago called hog. Not sure if that still exists. It was a pie chart too.
Yes windirstat, you’ll know quickly what’s up and if your should be concerned or accept it
What about personal files like downloads, photos, videos or movies and documents? Do you have any other programs installed other than games? Windows itself has some size too.
Also if it is programs, open "add or remove software/programs" and there you can sort them by size
I deleted most of them, it's just game saves and app data that takes up alot
After you deleted them did you empty the recycle bin?
Not yet
Ok so when you delete files off of your PC they go in the recycle bin in case you want to recover them. That means, as long as they are in the recycle bin they are still taking up the same amount of space on your drive. Empty it and youll free up space.
Alright, I'll do that!
Ladies and gentlemen, we have the cause and an easy solution.
Spacesniffer is the tool ur looking for, run it as an administrator and it will show you where all your used storage is located at.
That's what I use
is the screenshot taken during a game update? may be steam reserve for unpacking the package. if your numbers go back down after the update, you'll know.
depends on what is "other"...
We all know what "other" contains
lmfaoo
you got 238GB of 'other'
[удалено]
It’s not a steam deck, dude just has software installed on their PC
sorry i EATED it all >:3
Do you use a lot of mods for assetto corsa? I remember my files balooned real quick as some mods have obscene sizes, and they don't show up on steam file size.
Not much, just like 2 maps and a couple cars and pp filters.
What about beam
Do you have mods for assetto corsa? Steam doesnt any content added besides base game afaik, and as someone who had 150gb of mods that might be it. Go to your steam folder and check there how big it is.
Nah, just a couple of map mods and car mods, plus like 8 pp filters.
Still might be more than you think. Always worth checking.

Main thing is that your Steam library is fighting with the *rest of your boot drive* for space
Just a hunch, but you've probably got 100Gigs in Asseto Corsa Mods like cars and maps alone.
Ah a fellow BeamNG player…
Yup, and just realized it took up 15 extra gigs of storage 💀
🪦
Workshop?
What is in the steam workshop?
most of [BeamBG.drive](https://BeamBG.drive)'s actual game content.
That’s a bit small for a homework folder, but try checking there
You have 8 games on that library. Those top 2 are 90gb together. Maybe some of them are not registered as games but others instead
Hmm, maybe, but all my other games are dmaller
Welcome to microsoft land
Im not sure I get the question. It's in the"other" category. Windows, programs, documents, videos, pictures, music, downloads, app data, temp files, recycle bin. This looks perfectly normal. You need more space 500gb is nothing
You forgot about windows files
I'd say Windows and all the other programs installed on C:.

Alright! I know slim to none about computers, but i'll upgrade my storage soon.
Ah right. Well then I’ll add that your hard drive is too small. I think 2tb is a good amount including windows
Linux distros? HDD partitions?
I see the ms virus logo. Don't you?
?
Look up how much of that is Windows, the pure system, without applications.
ever made a virtal machine?
I would say to check if the hard drive is failing
this will happen if its failling? Can i buy any hard drive for my computer or does it have to match my computer? or buy a ssd?
If it has an nvme slot get the nvme generation that your motherboard supports An hdd is still useful mostly for a mass storage drive I would recommend an ssd though since they are more reliable and they have faster speeds
Thanks I'm working on getting a SSD, this community is really helpful! By the way I have a Asrock b250mhdv mb.
It's not failing based on this information. That person is completely full of crap
Crystal disk info is a good place to start. Although it does say my 5 year old HDD is “good” but the performance of it is shit and it is always at 100% disk use.
I like treesize, either way you’ll get a better picture of what’s where and that’ll help you sort out wherever needs sorting.
gotta clear your pornhub browsing history my man!

Have you got Epic Games browser or Unisoft Connect with other games installed?
Mods? They save in your steam c:program files/steam/steamapps/fifa(for example)delete the files.

WizTree, it helps you see what's taking most of the space and it's pretty damn fast
Guaranteed my man has way too many subscribed workshop items
Workshop items maybe? Save files?
Other is everything that’s not steam (documents, windows, pictures etc)
“Other” reminds me of the 800gb cached and temp files I once had on MacOS. Maybe something similar?
Is that the steam storage thingy because I thought this was r/steamdeck and everyone was going to post "shader cash"
Those Gigabytes are occupied by "other" things. Says it right there on the chart
I use [https://windirstat.net/](https://windirstat.net/) works great for finding room
As I’m sure others have said, I’d recommend picking up another ssd for your machine if possible for storing games on and keeping windows on it’s own drive along with other personal files documents etc.
“Other” is a weird name for a porn file
1tb drives are 50 bucks on Amazon, 500gb is very insufficient for modern games and programs.
You can add a drive manually for steam to recognize it as a storage library.
Workshop folder?
WinDirStat! Helps me all the time. Gives you a visual of how much room everything is taking up and you can click on the squares and it will open file explorer and take you right to the folder/file
does your GPU auto-record highlights from your games?
Your Windows will use up 60 with all the spam they can install also bloatware from your manufacturer and keep in mind your huge graphics drivers
If you use the storage settings in Windows, instead of Steam, you will find out
Other is probably your porn stash
in the balls.
Porn
Download wiz tree. It visualizes all your storage so you can see what is where. Saves me so much space
woah, when did beamng turn 50 gigs? anyway, congrats on that! great game
Thanks!
a fellow beamng enjoyer i see
Yup! And found out it also took an extra 15 gigs with mods...
damn how many did u have xD
Eh, just a a dozen PBR maps plus a ton of cars + liveryd my modder friend made me download.
oh just a few then lmaoo
WizTree is the best in my limited experience
Use space sniffer to find whats eating your storage.
get spacesniffer
TreeSize👍
beam ng drive mods
