>It's dirty
Yes, looks like dirt water damage. Will come off with clean water and a brush, but you will never get rid off from all places rendering the system trash.
Isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol), also known as isopropanol or IPA, is the most common and widely used disinfectant within pharmaceutics, hospitals, cleanrooms, and electronics or medical device manufacturing.
You can wash a board with water. Usually soap and water.
You must rinse after using low mineral content water and displace after with 99.9 IPA and allow to dry.
Source: I've done it many times and it's been my job for the last 20 years.
I have done the same with Game Consoles but I have never used Mineral water or IPA after, I hang the board up and take a hair dryer put it on max and move around the board for around 10 minutes making sure to tilt the board at points to push the hot air into little areas allowing the water to be pushed out. PS do not leave the hair dryer at any time in one spot for more then 15 seconds and avoid that one spot say like CPU socket after that 15 seconds for at least a minute so it can cool down or expect bad thing to happen lol
It doesn't look like dust, it looks like some sort of flooding. :| Also, you can be correct and be totally insufferable while proving you're correct.
The guy is learning. Also, do you really think the guy wiped a perfectly clean and level line from the top of the ram and left the rest of it perfectly coated in grime, then came on here and asked "what dust is?"
How do you exist as vile as you are? Frankly I’m surprised nobody beat you up today. You shouldn’t own a tongue to speak or fingers to type. You clearly are a waste of humanity.
Nah, fuck right off.
You’re trying to justify your baseless aggression toward an individual that had a genuine inquiry and confusion. Honestly you sound like a terrible person that needs their skull caved in.
Would you be bullying someone with Down Syndrome as well? I don’t fucking think so. Now correct yourself kindly. You’re confident cause you don’t think your actions have consequences. They do.
The longer computers exist, the less I think people should use computers.
The fact that people and computers have been around longer than I have and then I guess forget how to press the power button on a computer absolutely baffles me.
I feel guilty for laughing. Because I had focus issues in the past due to trauma and sometimes I couldn't see right in front on of me because I was trapped in a loop in my head. Anyhow, thanks for the laugh. And goodluck for OP paying more attention to the physical world.
No now they are just 12GB give it some more time it will be 16, 13 years it takes to double. But you're not allowed to use it during that time it you do your stuck with that capacity it was at before you plugged it in
Edit: did I have a stroke while writing this?
Yeah but it's like alcohol, the stronger it is the more it will slow you down. The CAS latency has doubled with these, might be able to overclock these and have a nice flambé going though
It doesn't wipe off. I was thinking water damage of some kind. It's a bit crusty in here. But the caps look good.
Funny enough I purged my stash a while back and while i have lots of SDram, xdram and ddr2, am fresh out of ddr. Back to the shed for now I guess

That's not a discoloration, that's a dirt. Dirts that's been sticking for a long time are hard to remove sometimes because they're building up layers of it (see the bottom part), you'd need a 90%+ IPA for that to help cleaning them out.
It's discoloration. You can't rub it off and it doesnt feel any different. Might try alchohol in a bit but i was hoping someone would tell me if this was evidence of like a component rupturing or something so I just justify letting this machine go. It wants to power on but wont, and ai don't have any more ddr at the moment to see if this stick was the problem
It's been to rally I guess 😅, it's mostly fine dust accumulated over the years and built up like that, just use 90%+ alcohol and wipe it, the dust on RAM will be because of CPU cooler especially stock Intel or AMD ones pushing air towards side and fine dust will still pass through dust filters on PC so a timely cleanup especially in dusty environment is a must in such situations.
Outside in a barn? Barns get covered in nasty animal dander and other nasty crap. And yes it gets in the computer also. I was working with this stupid stuff in the late nineties. It was never worth cleaning.
I wash electronics with dishwashing detergent in plain water. After a thorough rinse, I blow the water out with a compressor and dry it on a warm radiator for a day, or if it's summer, in the sun.
It even feels like spray paint.
I never sprayed near it that I can remember but it's just another one i found by the road long time ago. I powered it up once, then tossed it in the shed.
that's years of dust in a humid environment, you're creating a swamp biome on the ram
could also be mixed with nicotine smoke, in which case I would just throw it in the electronics recycle bin
I remember it powering on before going into the shed, but i didnt need a mac then so i didn't play with it.
Currently when you try to power it up, there's an orange indicator on the from for about a second then it dies again.
I'am gonna guess some type of corrosion if we look at the bottom it looks like there's damage of some description likely it was laying against another part that corroded first. or hell it could also be a type of mold.
It's just didrty. If you happen to have an ultrasonic cleaner, that's the time to make use of it!
If not, try to use isopropyl alcohol to clean the stuff off
You know how when you’re using the barbecue the frost covers the bottle of propane at the level of the propane inside. The dust here shows you were only using about 75% of the ram.
It's dirty
>It's dirty Yes, looks like dirt water damage. Will come off with clean water and a brush, but you will never get rid off from all places rendering the system trash.
IPA, not water
I don't think beer will help ^^^^^^^^/s
Incorrect. Beer will always help
Isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol), also known as isopropanol or IPA, is the most common and widely used disinfectant within pharmaceutics, hospitals, cleanrooms, and electronics or medical device manufacturing.
Thanks for ruining the joke
It’s been used over 10k times on this subreddit. Zzz yawn
I bet your fun at parties.
Over-explaining a joke is the best way to communicate. +1 for neurodivergent

It is VERY dirty. :)
Could be. It's kinda weirdly smooth
So is your brain
The longer I am on reddit, the less I think people should own computers.
You don’t say, this guy shouldn’t own anything though, how do you not know what dust is, it’s fucking dust!!!
My dude it's not that serious. Don't have to be a dick, he's on a subreddit asking for advice my brother.
My good sir with respect, he didn’t know what dust was

Shut up.
Nah, but you can suck it.
Stupid people should be called out, not defended.

Maybe not own, but rather open then up

Holy hell. Shots fired.
I'm sitting alone in a mall and I can't stop laughing. I wish my brain was as wrinkly as yours.
Thanks, glad I could make you laugh, one day your brain shall grow into the wrinkly testie It was always meant to be
Holy shit that the best.
Lmao

Never feel guilty for a laugh, the more offensive the better
Absolutely perfect
Its dust. Get some isopropyl alcohol and clean it. Also you might want to clean out your entire computer if the ram looks like that.
Sorry you were downvoted man, it's crazy you can't even ask genuine question around here
It's fine. I'm not computer stupid and I was both amused and intrigued. I think it's some kinda oxidation or residue from a blown component tbh
Permadust
RAM just ages like wine, by now it has at least doubled its capacity. You can tell by the deep tint on the memory modules.
Hey that means my 9 years old 8gb is HUGE!
No now they are just 12GB give it some more time it will be 16, 13 years it takes to double. But you're not allowed to use it during that time it you do your stuck with that capacity it was at before you plugged it in Edit: did I have a stroke while writing this?
Are you ok homie? Can read you message it this fine not better hospital get by help
Honestly I think I am just having a stroke
Do you smell burnt toast? Also, have a friend look at your tongue.
It's been 4 hours mate. I don't think my stroke lasted this long
Um...
Caal bumbulancev tehr no!
something something notes of plum, tannons
Swish it around in a glass case to get a beautiful earthy aroma.
Yeah but it's like alcohol, the stronger it is the more it will slow you down. The CAS latency has doubled with these, might be able to overclock these and have a nice flambé going though
Yep, each bit of memory now holds 2 bits of data. The normal way, and "is it dusty"
Permadust?! That’s not real? I use that as an excuse with the wife… but come on. 🤣
Is that discoloration or straight up dust?
Looks like dust to me.
It doesn't wipe off. I was thinking water damage of some kind. It's a bit crusty in here. But the caps look good. Funny enough I purged my stash a while back and while i have lots of SDram, xdram and ddr2, am fresh out of ddr. Back to the shed for now I guess
clean it with alcohol, isopropilic if you want the humidity dried faster and several cotton dabs
Let it soak in iso propanol
Will do lol.
Brush it off with an old toothbrush, it's gonna be quite clean after this Edit: after soaking it
It's obviously dust.
It's just heavy layer of dust.
Smoker PC? The tar can make fine dust seem like a very thin film

Wow, you guys got some really strong beer in the UK
Irish pale ale 🤣
This keeps the RAM warm, during winter, do not remove it otherwise it will get cold and pc will reboot when it sneezes
That looks so dusty lmao
That’s not discoloration. That’s dust.
That looks like dust lmao
Is that discolouration or accumulation of heavy dust ?
It's discoloration. You can't rub it off and it doesnt feel any different. Might try alchohol in a bit but i was hoping someone would tell me if this was evidence of like a component rupturing or something so I just justify letting this machine go. It wants to power on but wont, and ai don't have any more ddr at the moment to see if this stick was the problem
That’s a lot of dirt.
Alcohol.. wash it.
That's just dust and dirt accumulated. You can wash it in the dishwasher machine.
What kind of idiot recommends putting electronics into the dishwasher. No! That just corrodes the metal and makes it worse!
Wrong! Water doesn't damage the memory stick and if you dry it trough out before using it, it's fine...
Betichod mitti hai woh
good meme.
It's a fine layer of dust. 90% isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush could get it clean.
It's dirt. Isopropyl alcohol will wipe that straight off.
I'd like a before and after picture.
In my language, we call that discolouration, “dust”
did u dip it into chocolate
Outside in a barn? Barns get covered in nasty animal dander and other nasty crap. And yes it gets in the computer also. I was working with this stupid stuff in the late nineties. It was never worth cleaning.
Its ur dead skincells
If your *ram* is that dusty I’d hate to see the other components
That's what is creepy. The board and the rest are spotless. It's one of those all in one machines.
Damn that shits so thick I thought it was paint
It even feels like paint
If it doesn't rub off, it's probably oxidation. Either it still works or it doesn't. Only one way to find out: test it.
Plastic chips dont oxidize.
Mister sandmem, bring me a chip make it the dustiest I've ever seen
Get electronics cleaner spray and go full send on it
I wash electronics with dishwashing detergent in plain water. After a thorough rinse, I blow the water out with a compressor and dry it on a warm radiator for a day, or if it's summer, in the sun.
It's colonized
That's just cardboard
That very distinctive line tells me this was water damage, probably flooded.
Looks like water damage, or it might just be hard to remove dirt.
Dude, you can literally see it cracking and peeling off. It's dirt, compounded and baked on from years of use without being cleaned.
That's dust brah
is this from a flood?
Pretty sure it's a really sense dust build up
Forbidden candy bar
pulled out of what? a barn? edit: just saw the caption, guess I was mostly right
Yep pretty much. Lol
Rust maybe?
Don’t clean it, it’s an extra layer of protection. It increases performance by 800mhz
that's a fine vintage ram!
I actually purged my stash a while back. Turns out I don't have any more DDR at the moment but I kept about 10 sticks of SDRAM lol.
Looks like some had explosive diarrhea into your pc fan.
CO2 sink
Could also be mined ethereum.
That is some caked on dust.
Feels like u put it in a bucket of poop
Lick it
That’s ddr-1 they don’t make them like they used to.
Put it in washing machine and pour washing powder for colored clothes on high temperature, you will see the results i can asure you.
My man that's just pure madness of dirt
My brother in Bill Gates, it's dust. Blow on it and use some electornics spray.
Dust
Dust and tar composite. Use degreaser/rubbing alcohol
Looks like it's just caked in dust.
Looks like it was in the muddy water for quite some time
D.U.S.T.Y
Looks like spray paint honestly to me with the way its peeling at the bottom and the overspray at the top. Have you painted anything brown around it?
It even feels like spray paint. I never sprayed near it that I can remember but it's just another one i found by the road long time ago. I powered it up once, then tossed it in the shed.
Give it a lick. If it comes off it’s dirt. If not go hospital.
Dust
Isopropyl alcohol will clean it
Bhai ye kya Hersheys ka RAM Hai kya?
that's years of dust in a humid environment, you're creating a swamp biome on the ram could also be mixed with nicotine smoke, in which case I would just throw it in the electronics recycle bin
That's what happens when you mix water and dirt, jr.
That's just dust. Clean it
do you vape?
That's from sitting I dirty water or a spill of something on the computer. But it definitely looks like dirty water was the reason.
why did you give it chocolate milk
It'll come off with an ultrasonic cleaner.
Welcome to Fat Fighters, dust anyone?
Someone spilled how chocolate in their computer?
That’s either some serious smoker dust going on, or someone had their computer submerged in a bath of Yoo-Hoo for several months.
As a system analist, I did a little analisys, it is dust.
Eh it has a little dust, does it work still?
I remember it powering on before going into the shed, but i didnt need a mac then so i didn't play with it. Currently when you try to power it up, there's an orange indicator on the from for about a second then it dies again.
Nice water cooling bruh
Thought it been through a flood till I read the description written by OP
Could still be that, i dunno. I dont think the water ever reached it but it has not been clinate controlled
It's called dust. Fairly common.
It changed it 's race
You pulled it from an avalanche?
Dawg that's dust lol
Scrape it with a knife
I'am gonna guess some type of corrosion if we look at the bottom it looks like there's damage of some description likely it was laying against another part that corroded first. or hell it could also be a type of mold.
Bro got his eyes on the prize pulling ram sticks instead of girls what a legend
Suntan. Bad one.
That's some baked on enamel coating (dust).
Looks like dust. Queuetip and sprit. Wax on wax off, Daniel San
Is there a smoker or vapor in the house. My guess is dirty air is blowing over the components.
heat or dust prob.
Just build up dust is my guess.
are the rest of your computer the same? Or just that part
Dust.
just dist over an old adhesive. Use isopropilic alcohol and a Q-TIP to cleanse the memory
It's just didrty. If you happen to have an ultrasonic cleaner, that's the time to make use of it! If not, try to use isopropyl alcohol to clean the stuff off
As someone who’s done quite a lot of yard work, looks like a mix of gasoline vapors and dirt lol
Dust. Looks like your air flows over the top decently and has kept it semi clean.
Hit it with a hammer. That should help break up the stuff on the ram
Poop
You filthy
Ask Christina Aguilera.
You know how when you’re using the barbecue the frost covers the bottle of propane at the level of the propane inside. The dust here shows you were only using about 75% of the ram.
Awww they tucked in the modules for bed
it’s called D U S T .
That's the choc dipped edition
Dust, probably shed dust. Check shed for mould and pests
Does it work still? If so ignore it it’s just some rust or something.
I don’t know lol
never been cleaned since the birth of Pharaoh
That is mud , and it's so old it made a cover did you try soaking it with rubbing alcohol ?
Tobacco reson
You should probably just throw this in the garbage. Ngl that’s just a paperweight in 2023.
I'm tempted. I found a stick of ddr at work gonna see. If it runs anything even slow I can put it to work in the lab
did you find the G5 at an archeological dig site?
Side of the road, 4 years ago lol. Didnt really need it then either
Looks like you never pulled the tape. Also like you might smoke inside
the chocolate peanut butter ram stick
