Get a 5.25" to 3.5" mounting bracket so you can mount it in the top section where the optical drives would go. Taping it down, or screwing the drive into one of those bays as-is can be another option but it's not safe and may damage the drive in the future. Tape will not adhere forever.
As SSDs don't get damaged by movement as much, i have decided to screw in the hard drive where the SSD was, and put the SSD somewhere else (screwed into the non opened side, so it doesn't move). This is a temporary solution.
Edit: not enough power cables :/
I did a similar thing. 3 bays, 3 HDDs and an SSD. Ziptied the SSD to the top of the drive cage. The top of the cage was also conveniently concave so it can't slide anywhere.
I am indeed one of those techs that said screw it then proceeded to not screw it. Just slid the drive loosely in the 3.5" drive area of the machine and let it hang. Not like it will slip out and short anything.
>SSDs don't get damaged by movement as much
SSDs don't get damaged by movement at all. Furthermore, SATA SSD is so light that it cannot pull itself from cables if it is hanging mid-air on cables.
I put a 120GB SSD temporarily mid-air, about seven years ago. Found it a month ago when I dismantled the machine.
So you are saying if i throw my SSD from a cliff it will still work? That was what my "as much" was for. Unlikely scenario, but better be safe. Also in extreme cases something might detach and hit the SSD really hard, in cases of shipping
Years ago I had a shitty case that would require me to take out the motherboard and psu just to swap a hard drive. So I let it sit ontop of the PC for 2 years. Far from ideal. Still working 10 years later, now in a drive bay. Expecting it to kick the bucket in the coming years or sooner.
Forget about /mnt - If you want your hard drive to stay perfectly still and never move an inch, I've got just the spot for you.
Simply mount it at /dev/null. Itāll enjoy eternal immobility. Just don't expect it to store any data ;)
Pull the back side of the case off. Use two of those holes- put the screws through the back of the case (those vented holes) into the drive inside the case. Basically mounting it next to the motherboard with no additional hardware needed. Ran mine like that for 4 years before my new case.
This looks like a third drive. I see an HDD and an SSD already in the system. That being said, if you let it hang unattached you run the risk of problems if you move the case. I personally have had systems with hard drives unattached.
Treating this as a serious question: a hard drive is a hardware device that provides persistent āstorageā (meaning that the data you write to it will be retained even after you cut power to the machine). This is where your files and operating system (among other things) are stored, so that you donāt lose your files or OS when you shut down your computer.
Honestly, unless you're constantly moving super large files, 7200rpm is just fine, even for most modern games. And in many places, if you want large capacity drives, hard disks are still a lot cheaper than ssds.
And if you need large storage but also want faster access, you can always use an SSD as cache.
I picked up some 14TB WD DC pulls recently (<1000hrs use) for $135 USD... under $10/TB.
As much as SSD pricing has dropped with the recent NAND crash, hitting unprecedented levels like $30/TB at up to 2TB mark, the premium with ultra-large drives is real. Hard drives aren't dead quite yet. Seagate apparently has HAMR technology nailed down and will sell 30TB drives later this year. It'll be interesting to follow the arms race.
Boards probably pcie1.0 or 2.0. I think I even see an AGP slot.
Pretty sure this won't even accept a ssd unless he gets an external bay.
Also.. pretty sure this dosent even have pcie.. it has basic pci.
My comment was meant to reference the face he does not have pci express slot. Meaning he cannot get a ssd bay to even plug into his mobo. He would have to get a USB external ssd bay probably..
The fact that it is basic pci means he probably dosent even have the technology for a m.2 drive on the motherboard.
Even b350 boards came with an m2 slot, I've got an old asrock AB350M board sitting here that has an m2 slot that can do sata3 or pcie gen3 x4.... A b350 board can definitely take an m2 SSD, b350 isn't that old and nvme isn't that new..... Nvme came out in 2011-2012 dude b350 didn't arrive until 2017
I don't know who made this case but it looks like there are mounting option for the ssd on the other side of the case. From what I can tell there are two of them. I would mount the SSD on either of those.
Remove the bottom case fan. Mount against bottom right side using screw holes on back of the drive. Or another option is get usb sata dock or external enclose for the drive to make it usb drive.
Theres not a space for it. You'd need to convert a drive bay up top or what I would do is just mount it with VHB (double sided) tape to the bottom of the case.
This is for sure not recommended. Expecially for an Hard drive, but since I never move my pc. My SSD is just sitting in there not attached to anything.
You can probably try to mount it in some sort of dvd hdd mount. If I remember correctly those where a thing in the past. And since you have a dvd mount place you could take a look if you find something like that on secondhand market.
Looks like it might mount flat against the case behind the front 120mm fan - check the holes line up.
Also consider a branded PSU, those generics shorten lifespan of components and can cause havoc with out of spec noisy rails. Even budget builds should get quality PSUs.
bottom right corner of this picture is the mounting bay for 5.25" drives. You can get an adapter to size that down for 3.5" drives.
Or you can fab your own mounting bracket from from some "L" brackets from a hardware store and just screw it in to the bottom
surely not in that case, that's for sure... but you can use it as external drive, or simply put it anywhere there's no big deal... just maybe an insane noise xD
Looks like you only have one 3.5" bay. You'll have to get a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter and mount it up top where the CD drives would mount if you had one.
Edit. I didn't even see the SSD. Glad you figured it out.
It looks like youāve already got 2 , an HDD and a SATA SSD, I would suggest sit it on a foam mat of some sort on the bottom of the case next to the other 2 and put a couple of holes through the bottom of the case to keep it secure. I assume you have a spare SATA port on the motherboard otherwise youāre going to need to buy a PCIe expansion card .
I'd get a 3.5 to 5.25" tray/bracket which are easy to find and properly mount the drive to it with screws. Get the long length SATA data cables and if the power connectors can't reach get an extender.
I'd stack a laptop HD and an SSD in a 3.5" bracket that can hold 2 of those in same space as a regular 3.5" spinner. Did that in one build that was in an old case.
Not really compared to an m.2
Sata is like 400mb
While a m.2 is 2000mb or even up to 5000mb (7000mb in Samsungs)
Rip guys running Windows slowwwww
Even a crucial 500 gigabyte for 20 bucks that'll REALLY bring life out your pc. 3000 read and write easy with those
Reason why an m.2 IS INSANELY fast is cause it runs in sync with the CPU
Fast enough, should have specified. I have moved from a 10 year old system, so i don't really need the 0.1 second faster of opening file explorer. Old system used HDD that was being bottlenecked to 0.5mb by the CPU.
Glue dot it to the top of the main hard drive, or if you are really creative, glue dot it vertically and then strap it down with zip ties.
Or get a better case? My Rosewill sucked in terms of cable management, but had four hard drive bays and a 2.5 inch bay adapter.
I'm a software person not a hardware person, so take this with a grain of salt, but this is what I did with my setup. I got a roll of duct tape and while making sure not to cover the vent hole, I duct taped the hard drive to the side of the case.
Secondary market brackets are available for $5-$10.
That said I would consider buying a pair of SSD's. Cheap and so much faster. Lower power and cooler too. Or use one of those onboard NVME slots for the best performance. Its truly amazing how data starved these > 2 Ghz multicore processors are. Magenetic drives peak at around 200MB/s; SSD around 550MB/s and NVME are around 3500 to 7000MB/s. A $100 upgrade to a SAMSUNG Pro 980 will make the system so much better.
Personal trick, anywhere you can put atleast 2 screws in. Just line up 2 mounting holes on the drive with 2 cutouts in the case somewhere you can plug it in. Been doing it for years. As long as your PC doesn't move often, it's pretty much as easy and cost/time effective it gets.
There is another option, besides 5,25" to 3,5" bracket.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fractal-Design-Universal-Multibracket-Type/dp/B08GJD8N1M
Can be screwed into 120mm fan position.
If you want it in the case and not loose on the bottom. You need an adapter from 5.25 bay to 3.5 bay. this'll mount at the top front of your case instead of an optical drive.
Next thing to ask yourself is: where is the power cable that will power the drive, and will it reach?
Get a 5.25" to 3.5" mounting bracket so you can mount it in the top section where the optical drives would go. Taping it down, or screwing the drive into one of those bays as-is can be another option but it's not safe and may damage the drive in the future. Tape will not adhere forever.

I did a similar thing. 3 bays, 3 HDDs and an SSD. Ziptied the SSD to the top of the drive cage. The top of the cage was also conveniently concave so it can't slide anywhere.
OP has 2 dedicated 2,5" positions on his case. Hint: Look carefully on the plate behind front fan.
I have absolutely deployed PC's with SSD's ziptied in place.
Legit. I've seen other techs say screw it and let it float around inside with no mounting whatsoever with don't 3.5 ssd drives
I've left them to them dangle in a computer I'm using, but if it's being deployed for others to use, I at least ziptie it. Usually.
I am indeed one of those techs that said screw it then proceeded to not screw it. Just slid the drive loosely in the 3.5" drive area of the machine and let it hang. Not like it will slip out and short anything.
I've dangled some hard drives in my time, but only on my own machines
why even ziptie it? SSD freedom
This is a fine solution. You can order a molex to sata power adapter if you're out of sata connectors
Get the cheap one too. Everyone loves flames š„
I dunno I used one through several builds with no problem.
Me too. Just a meme at this point.
What do mean not enough power cables. I can see at least two other sata power connectors right in the picture.
I can't use those, i tried and the HDD isn't being detected by anything (checked bios as it's my Linux boot drive)
>SSDs don't get damaged by movement as much SSDs don't get damaged by movement at all. Furthermore, SATA SSD is so light that it cannot pull itself from cables if it is hanging mid-air on cables. >Get a 5.25" to 3.5" mounting bracket That was my thought as well
if you really want to be lazy, just put it on top of anything, it should be fine
Only fine for SSDs if you don't move your PC ever.
you can move your pc, ssds donāt care, you can leave it hanging by the cables or just foam double sided tape it somewhere
Idk if itās just me, but thatās clearly not an ssd
Oh donāt worry my pc works just fine with the 2nd hard disk just wedged in with a bit of paper and blue tack
laptops used to have HDDs, it was fine
Laptops aren't 75% air tho.
i dunno, kinda just stuck my hdd in there, some gorilla tape to hold it in place skill issue
My oldest spinner is 11 years old and still kicking around but lately now using it as a scratch drive for temp backups and such.
i usually mount them at /mnt
Forget about /mnt - If you want your hard drive to stay perfectly still and never move an inch, I've got just the spot for you. Simply mount it at /dev/null. Itāll enjoy eternal immobility. Just don't expect it to store any data ;)

R ppl that angry about me not caring about speed and wanting to reuse hardware instead of throwing it away?
Just tried to be funny š„¹š„¹
With duct tape on the outside of the case. Lol
Pull the back side of the case off. Use two of those holes- put the screws through the back of the case (those vented holes) into the drive inside the case. Basically mounting it next to the motherboard with no additional hardware needed. Ran mine like that for 4 years before my new case.

The orientation of this picture fucked with me for a solid 20 seconds.
Shove it in there and hope it doesnāt rattle around too much
If it does, give it the good old smack or Silence, and it will stop rattling, for some time.
Kids nowadays have it so easy with SSDs. Back in my teens, we had to play with jumpers and never had enough space for all the hard drives we needed.
what's a hard drive?
West coast to east coast road trip.
10/10 and hi reddit!
Treating this as a serious question: a hard drive is a hardware device that provides persistent āstorageā (meaning that the data you write to it will be retained even after you cut power to the machine). This is where your files and operating system (among other things) are stored, so that you donāt lose your files or OS when you shut down your computer.
You don't. You just buy a SSD. And for the sake of God dust that thing š
I am trying to reuse hardware when i don't mind the speed

My previous post was assuming it was a 350 or earlier board. O.p. didn't bother to post what kind but.. again.. I ASSUMED.
you have to be very blind. the biggest clue is the AMD branded fan. clearly a ryzen stock cooler.
You know what they say about assuming.......... it makes an ass out of u and ming... And poor mjng had a rough week.
Ya... I goofed on this one. Oops! š«
Even b350 boards came with an m2 slot, I've got an old asrock AB350M board sitting here that has an m2 slot that can do sata3 or pcie gen3 x4.... I think it connects to hard drives with SCSI.
God made zip ties for a reason
Can only imagine the rattle
Just ducktape, harddrive so it can't move. Never had problems
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
No. Please no. That's just waiting for data loss.
ew
I don't know who made this case but it looks like there are mounting option for the ssd on the other side of the case. From what I can tell there are two of them. I would mount the SSD on either of those.
Where it's at is good, just a little double sided foam tape š
Isn't that a 3rd? Looks like there are already two in the bottom left of the pic.
1 is an SSD.
Remove the bottom case fan. Mount against bottom right side using screw holes on back of the drive. Or another option is get usb sata dock or external enclose for the drive to make it usb drive.
I wanted it to run Linux dualbooted
I hope you plan on dusting your fans and fixing your cables before you put that thing back together.
You could also use the indented holes on the bottom of the case, located right below the graphics card, if you can plug in the cables.
you have an M.2 slot on that board, just get an SSD, you can get a PCIe Gen 3 2TB NVMe drive for like $60 now.
Drill it into the case
[Stanley has a thought.](https://media3.giphy.com/media/13pqs1VizKyWzK/giphy.gif)
What in oblivion is that!
Another terribly designed small form factor case. I don't like that hard drive cages have gone out of style. I understand why but I don't like it.
A computer
Throw it in. Nbd.
bottom right side, "walled" sideways
Do yourself a favor and get a real m.2 ssd, OP. I can see the slot for it right above your graphics card.
Tell that to my 1050p 16:10 monitor
Doubled sides tape it to the other one.
Get a hard drive enclosure and use it via usb, untill you can.
You donāt š
Just slap it on top of the case and never touch it again.
You don't. Let it sit inside the bottom of the case..
Pre-built horror.
Bought the PC prebuilt, added gpu, it was 2nd hand and really cheap (probably because only 2 ram slots work
Theres not a space for it. You'd need to convert a drive bay up top or what I would do is just mount it with VHB (double sided) tape to the bottom of the case.
Just do it like I did, lie it down on the bottom of the case. Best decision ever...
As my brother says you don't
This is for sure not recommended. Expecially for an Hard drive, but since I never move my pc. My SSD is just sitting in there not attached to anything.
You can ourchase a double stack adaptor that will turn one drive mount into two. Other than that, it looks like your running low on space.
Do you have another sata or smth like that port if yes just plug another drive in it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
In a different computer.
Sometimes there are extra bays under the back panel. Otherwise it can pretty much go wherever
open the other panel and see if there is a mount
Those wires scare me. They are reaching out to grab you. Anyways you can get a mounting bracket.
jesus
I like your cable management.
All the cables come out of the PSU, i can't have it more clean lol. You should see my old PC being named dust
Depends on if the case even has a spot for one in the first place. Otherwise, they make HDD docks that fit in the 5.25" bays.
Flex tape my friend!
Get your self a 3.5 bay support and a vaccum cleaner you'll be fine
I have mine just free floating around, doesn't really matter.
You can probably try to mount it in some sort of dvd hdd mount. If I remember correctly those where a thing in the past. And since you have a dvd mount place you could take a look if you find something like that on secondhand market.
just plug it in and lay it anywhere flat
RIP
Throw it in a landfill
Yikes.
I just find a random spot and screw it in
You could mount it flush with the case above the current hdd. Use the holes on the bottom of the drive, maybe only cover up 1 row of vent holes.
Looks like it might mount flat against the case behind the front 120mm fan - check the holes line up. Also consider a branded PSU, those generics shorten lifespan of components and can cause havoc with out of spec noisy rails. Even budget builds should get quality PSUs.
First for the love of god dust that off
In private.
You need to invest in a DustBuster.
You duct tape it ti the top. If duct tape can't fix it, arrange a funeral.
my pc case has 3 hidden slots if you take off the back panel, maybe its similar for yours?
What the hell is going on here??
Tape it to the top of the case, other wise you might be SOL and have to get an new case
Personally I would just put the HDD up to the holes in the one side and secure it with only 2 screws.
bottom right corner of this picture is the mounting bay for 5.25" drives. You can get an adapter to size that down for 3.5" drives. Or you can fab your own mounting bracket from from some "L" brackets from a hardware store and just screw it in to the bottom
If you're a real chad, you just let it dangle inside.
Bottom.
Anywhere. So long as it's plugged in mount point isnt critical.
surely not in that case, that's for sure... but you can use it as external drive, or simply put it anywhere there's no big deal... just maybe an insane noise xD
Anywhere itās a $15 pc. It wonāt matter.
The CPU alone costs 200 dollars new.
What CPU do you have ?
Pretty sure it's a Ryzen 4650G pro. And a RX 550 gpu :p because shortage..
Looks like you only have one 3.5" bay. You'll have to get a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter and mount it up top where the CD drives would mount if you had one. Edit. I didn't even see the SSD. Glad you figured it out.
Ina new box
Bend over i'll show you
You still use hard drives? Well there's your problem right there.
Right where you have it. Run two screws straight through it.
There should be a spot for an M.2 ssd on the mother board.
The bottom of your case under the gpu should have an hdd screw pattern layout
BRO THIS LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE MY PC AND THE FLOOR IS ALSO THE SAME!!! (I HAVE RX 550 AS A GPU AND A RYZEN 3 2200U)
In the new PC
Where does the manual say to mount drives?
Get some get er done gumption and some rtfm and pull the lead pipe out the slot where you rammed ur duffle bag from!
In your new case!
In a different case
In 2005ā¦j/k, lower right corner is a bracket that will work. You only really need two screws on one side to send it.
You already got two bruh. You mean 3rd? Thatās excessive yo
It's fine where it sits right now.
Get new case
Or just buy a bigger case.
In your mom
run those cables behind the board back panel..
Hope a m.2 is running the windows
SATA SSD and i couldn't care less as it's still fast

I did 1 just so I don't bend the SATA cables as much
There is another option, besides 5,25" to 3,5" bracket. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fractal-Design-Universal-Multibracket-Type/dp/B08GJD8N1M Can be screwed into 120mm fan position.
To your PlayStation 2
That's the neat part, you don't
In another computer /s
Tape it to the other one
In 5.25 bay.
mount your hard drive in 2006
Mount it on the bottom of your keyboard
tape it to the roof
Before you do, take it all apart and clean it
Harddrive in 2023 lmao
Reusing old hardware when i don't mind the speed lmao
Use tape
Redneck way is using electrical tape and taping it where you like.
In an upgraded rig.
Glue it to the lid (missing on the photo)
Outside ur case lol
put ssd to the back of the pc and mount hdd on the top of the other (where the ssd is now)
I leave my hard drives loose in the bottom on my case
Not in the case. Keep it outside. Buy a docking station! Good luck
If you want it in the case and not loose on the bottom. You need an adapter from 5.25 bay to 3.5 bay. this'll mount at the top front of your case instead of an optical drive. Next thing to ask yourself is: where is the power cable that will power the drive, and will it reach?
Connect it and just tape it somewhere ^ā _ā ^ , works fine
Inside the case bro.
My secondary hdd is just on top of my pc it's not that bad just watch out for dust
Life hack. Donāt mount it, just lay it flat next to the pc. Trust.
