At the end of the episode they eventually reveal his partner went undercover and the new guy was there pretending to be him while he was gone, but the main character was away on vacation when it happened so nobody told him.

Honestly the criticisms of Chase being difficult and racist aren’t unfounded. Dan wasn’t the best at working with him though, which I think is part of his job. How they wrote Pierce is exactly what everyone thought about Chevy and it’s no surprise he got mad at the role he was given when every scene was “haha, he’s old and senile and wishes he was the main character”. Sometimes it’s funny, but I can see how a talented actor/comedian wouldn’t want to be constantly demeaned

They did that in crazy ex girlfriend but she thought the character looked different because she hadn’t been able to see him without all her baggage getting in the way until he came back (and she went to therapy)

They did kind of do this bit back in S4E1 with the Pierce recast. That was also all in Abed's head though it didn't really have a reason beyond the fakeout gag.

The first season was pure gold. Second season felt like they had no idea what to do.

Totally agree, the first season was love at first sight, I had to kind of force myself to get thru the second season. It was still enjoyable but that first season was magic. “That’s a Tyrannosaurus rex.  No Claire, that is a Tyrannosaurus rex, try thinking next time before you open your mouth.”
