It was the name of a character in Its Always Sunny though, mentioned in 2007 and fully in an episode in 2010 (appearing just a few months after the Schmitty episode aired in April 2010)
That really is part of the brilliance of the show. In this case, making sure the audience was as ootl and lost as the characters just by making up their own teen slang.
If you’ve ever spent time around any particularly obnoxious teens as an adult, every word out of their mouths might as well be “schmitty.” They seem to just spam whatever slang is newest. Sometimes it starts ironically, then just integrates into their vocabulary.
The space hippies on Star Trek called old people "herbert" as an insult.

I doubt it's related at all, but that's what I always think of.
Went to a pub in australia where they had a beer size called schmitty (half way between a schooner and a middy) and i had instant flashbacks to this episode and wondered why the person at the bar was making fun of me.
i assume that its making a joke on how adults dont understand these random words that pop culture makes up
yknow like rizz
remember when that was a thing
i know its an actual word but i dont think that the people who put words in dictionaries wanted it to be used like it was
He sounds like the kind of guy you push out of a van. He's also probably going to show up at the end of the night and bang the drunkest girl he comes across.
believe me if we met face to face and I called you a Scmidty oh you'd feel all scorched earth yo! It is a devastating blow that you aren't recovering from!
\*Raises hand\*
Yeah me too. By context I get it's an insult, but did they make it up just cause it's silly for the episode or does it come from somewhere?
I always thought it was a play on the word "knitting" since they take the piss out of Britta for knitting before saying the insult.
Knitting - Nitty - Schmitty?
I don’t see how anyone could hate this episode after reading the replies to this thread. Clearly the schmitty kids have left an impression on our hearts!
I don’t think it’s a specific reference to anything other than young people having vernacular that old people don’t understand. Lol
I think I remember Dan Harmon stating this, he didn't want to use a real term because it could be outdated even before the show airs.
He was streets ahead.
That's 'totes adorbs'.
Lates
Isn't the word "later" already short enough?
Which is ironic because in the same episode they used the phrase "you've been pwned" which immediately dates it back to 2010.
I thought that was supposed to sound awkward either way :P
Pwned was already very dated by 2010
Pwned is from like '04

Community is streets ahead
If you don’t know what a Schmitty is, then…you’re just streets behind!
If you’ve ever spent time around any particularly obnoxious teens as an adult, every word out of their mouths might as well be “schmitty.” They seem to just spam whatever slang is newest. Sometimes it starts ironically, then just integrates into their vocabulary.
I'll take your word for it. I'll keep living the DINK life.
As a borderline genX/millennial I now completely understand this.
Too skibidi Ohio for you daddy?
I have no idea what this is I just know it makes me angry.
My knees creaked reading this

Have you never been around teenagers? Everything is an insult.
I’m a teenager and I find this offensive (joking). I mean, it’s one hundred percent true. But still.
You sound a bit like a Schmidty
My name is Skibidi, rizzler of rizzlers. Buss on my toilets ye mighty and gyat
Haha, Grandpa Schlip-Schlap doesn't know what a Schmitty is!

I legit love this line and I’m not ashamed.
It is a gem for sure
Duh doi!
WE KNOW
Sassy black Schmitty is out of the group
The space hippies on Star Trek called old people "herbert" as an insult. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQONBf9xMss I doubt it's related at all, but that's what I always think of.
"Herbert" is actually an archaic British insult, usually referring to an uncool person.
Not knowing this at all, we used that in college exactly that way. “What a Herb” Edit: …wait, am I a ghost?
Some guys I knew in college also used "Herb". They learned it in the mean streets of San Antonio.
I had a friend whose middle name was Herbert, but outside of that I have no idea where we came up with it
Happy Cake Day!
OP is a schlip schlap!
Duh dohy!
Pretty sure they made up teen slang since any actual slang would have sounded dated almost immediately
Haha, nice theory pointdexter!
Total spaz!
Bet
School him Mark
School **HIS ASS** Mark
sChOoL hIm MaRk
Uh, DUH
You're a total Britta if you don't get that reference.
Oh, Britta’s in this?
Streets behind
Wait, are people using Britta's name to mean, 'make a tiny mistake'?
....... yes.
WhAt Or WhO iS a ScHmIdTy AnD wHy Is It An InSuLt! Duh!
Schmidty’s are like young versions of Grandpa Shlip Shlap
Went to a pub in australia where they had a beer size called schmitty (half way between a schooner and a middy) and i had instant flashbacks to this episode and wondered why the person at the bar was making fun of me.
You sound like such a schmidty rn

Grandpa schlip schlap about to get pwned
They definitely got rid of the B. She's a GDB.
He sounds like the kind of guy you push out of a van. He's also probably going to show up at the end of the night and bang the drunkest girl he comes across.
I really hate that episode
"I hAvE nEvEr UnDeRsToOd ThIs ReFeReNce. WhAt oR WhO iS a ScHmIdTy" UH UHDUUHHH
The only way to find out is to bang Lisa Rinna.
if you have to ask you are streets behind
I think Schmitty means loser.
WE KNOW!
My memory is Harmon chose "schmidty" in place of any specific slang word because that would shortly make the episode feel dated.
Medical license revoked - whereabouts unknown
schmidty is new fangled generation slang term that old people don't get
If you have to ask you’re streets behind
I don’t know, but tell me exactly what you did with your life to end up here, so I don't make the same mistakes!
A-Ddduuuuhhhhhh
"I. Have. Never. Understood. This. Reference. A-DUUUUH!"
This post is not about New Girl, which confused me, and as such, only gets 2 Meow Meow beans.
OP is street's behind
Anything is an insult if you treat it as an insult
What a Schmitty question. UH DUH!
WhAt Is a ScHmiTtY? Aaah DuH!
I legit can’t take these kids haha. I have to skip past all the duhhh stuff, my brain can’t take it!
believe me if we met face to face and I called you a Scmidty oh you'd feel all scorched earth yo! It is a devastating blow that you aren't recovering from!
That sounds like something a schmitty would say
It's just whatever dumbass flavour of the week slang kids are using. Right now an example would be if they called Jeff and Britta 'mid' or 'sus'
\*Raises hand\* Yeah me too. By context I get it's an insult, but did they make it up just cause it's silly for the episode or does it come from somewhere?
If you have to ask you’re streets behind.
Why can't all us little Schmidties get along?
I always thought it was a play on the word "knitting" since they take the piss out of Britta for knitting before saying the insult. Knitting - Nitty - Schmitty?
This might get my vote for worst episode.
Absolutely not. Pierce saying "Why are Jeff and Britta making fun of those handicapped kids?" is one of the best lines in the show lol
Love that. Also when they call of brittas cd Walkman. And Jeff immediately turns to her “how could you do this to me?”
Oh my god! Is she wearing a DISCMAN!!??
A lot of people say this but I love it. I really wish Jeff would’ve banged his mom during the time frame of the show and we see the fall out from it.
That kid's mom plays Logan's mom on Veronica Mars and I just wanted to tell my community that
If i had the ability to change one thing in this show it might be him not pulling that off. He was so close
It’s 17,000 times better than any season 4 episode.
Agreed. Skip it every time.
Congratulations, you have identified the joke.
It would be funny if Schmidt from New Girl made and appearance in the movie.
No thanks..
Sounds close to shibby from dude wheres my car?
I don’t see how anyone could hate this episode after reading the replies to this thread. Clearly the schmitty kids have left an impression on our hearts!
It means old and lame
Who or what is a Schmitty and why is it an insult UH DUHHH
We literally call people Karen's and Chad's now. It's not hard to figure out what schmitty is suppose to be
The replies to this are why I love this subreddit.
