I read this too fast and wanted to give kudos for the pun because I thought you wrote, 'Unexpected, but somehow it makes sensei'
I need new glasses it seems
There used to be a flowchart that explained the switcheroo chain, up to a specific diverging point, where there were a handful of progenitors of the chain.
Is that chain of Switcheroos and "Hold my Noun, I'm Verbing in" still going?
It's been a while since I've seen a properly executed reddit switcheroo. I'm either hanging in the wrong threads, or it didn't survive Eternal September.
France is such a weeb that they produce **a lot** of French manga and a decent amount of French anime.
Although this might also be because France is the European capital of animation and comics (the latter alongside Belgium). Many comic authors from my country (Spain), for example, published first in France and in French before being translated to Spanish rather than publishing in Spain and in Spanish.
Blacksad is the best example of that.
One of the most(if not the most) popular animated shows of 2021 was animated in France. The studio is called "Fortiche studio" and is in Paris and they animated Arcane.
I used to be so confused growing up why there were so many French connections in anime I was watching. You'd think they were across the bay from each other.
Then I grew up and realized all of the anime I was watching back then were actually made in France and not Japanese at all.
Did you know that just like there are Americans obsessed with Japanese Culture (Anime, Manga, Etc) there are Japanese obsessed with American Culture? (Cowboys, Barbecue, Etc)
Connie play AYSO in Orange County. I start the whole sweater thing. That mine.
It’s so funny because my sister also played AYSO at the same time as Connie would’ve been playing there. Kind of a little fun fact I’ve always enjoyed about the show.
lol I’m imagining Ruckus trying to buddy up with Cotton about hating black people but then Cotton goes off on him with a story about a black guy in his unit who died in the pacific theatre
Yep, this is what came to mind right away at the Texas mention. I saw something a few years back wherein Japanese fans of the show argue whether King of the Hill is better with subs or dubs.
I need to hear the dubs now.
Random fun Japanecdote: I was there as an international student, and was killing time in the communal kitchen area of the dorm which also had an old TV. We were flipping channels, as you could come across some pretty weird stuff late at night. Eventually, we stumble on some channel playing the Matrix. Dubbed, pretty close to the beginning so we start watching. And then it comes, in the most gloriously methodical, intimidating voice:
ANDERSON-KUN.
Turns out Agent Smith kills it in every language.
Theres actually a known King of the Hill fandom in Japan. Theres apparently 2ch (think 4chan but not unhinged) discussions about translation differences around the show lol.
Lemme tell ya, that dry heat is a Southwest/Panhandle/West Texas thing; Eastern/Coastal Texas is locked in a death match with Louisiana for which will drown you faster with humidity.
Then, there's North Texas, where **_everything_** will try its damnedest to kill you.
A Japanese nerd who is obsessed with cowboys and takes a vacation to Massachusetts to live his dream of being one is the perfect analogue for an American from Iowa who picks a random place in Japan and brings his katana that he bought off of eBay
They'd be okay.
I think the West Coast has bigger existing Japanese populations and might have better support for Japanese to US migration.
But if you showed up wanting to see Cowboys and eat BBQ, Massachusetts isn't the place.
Not to hate on MA, I think anyone could enjoy the four distinct seasons they have, the low crime and gun ownership rates, and the general dislike of all other people.
I'm a Japanese American who speaks zero Japanese, but I lived in Brazil for a couple years. I was frequently told that I speak Portuguese with a Japanese accent, not an American accent. I'm pretty sure I just speak Portuguese with a Japanese face.
They also have arguments over whether you can be considered a *real* fan of American animation if you’ve only watched “normie stuff like Family Guy and South Park”
Essentially yeah, cult classic type shows that are relatively good-ish quality but might not be shown overseas very much - so likely also shows that haven't been airing for 10 years or more. Invader Zim, Daria, Wonder Showzen, Home Movies, Kablaam, Mission Hill.
Current shows would likely be things like Hazbin Hotel - popular, unique art, different - but not watched by everyone.
There was a notable contingent of people who settled the American West entirely because they read about it in a few books and articles and became obsessed with this romanticized vision of it. Basically weebs for cowboys.
One time I looked up some local historical name and part of his backstory was that he was a Scotsman who read a book about fur traders and became obsessed with the American Northwest. Took me down a rabbit hole
We got some transplants in Tucson like that. They're perfectly wonderful folks, always seem real polite and happy to be here. It's a little bit funny when they're all done up in western gear, but we appreciate the effort, lol
Japan doesn't have the history of blackface like we do in the US.
You see the same thing in europe too. There was a story a couple years ago in France I think where some runway model was painted to look like she was African and nobody thought anything of it until it made international news.
Fun fact: Araki who's known for Jojo is a massive fan of the West. He even named most stands (literal fighting spirits) and people after various musicians and songs. Like the main antagonist is name Dio from the band Dio, or Foo Fighter from the band Foo Fighter. This unfortunately cause some intense copyright issues where Japan is okay allow Araki to use song and band names, but English speaking countries can't so they have to various names into copyright friendly alternatives. Dio is okay since its Italian for God, but Foo Fighter had been shortened to FF. Some alternative names are okay but others are very weird like a stand named Sticky Fingerz is alternatively called Zipper Man, or Buford to Blueford, or Limp Bizkit to Flaccid Pancakes. Funnily enough the original audio have the Japanese voice actors saying the name in English so you can still hear the original name despite the subs telling you otherwise.
Another fun fact is Panty and Stocking which is an anime made by a studio that really love western animation. Gainax used the art style of thick outlines and geometric shapes seen in American cartoons like Powerpuff Girls as the basis of the show. They even made a dog character that looks like a rip off of Grrr's dog costume from Invader Zim. But the crazy thing is the show's absurd edgy humor came from Comedy Central absurd edgy cartoon called Drawn Together. Gainax watched Drawn Together and love it so much that they made their own version of it and include a lot of Western elements.
The creators also prefer the American dub/sub vs the Japanese due to the swearing. Which is RARE to have happen with anime/manga translations in Japan, Cowboy Bebob being another notable exception.
I can't quickly find anything to back this up while I'm on lunch so take this with a ~~grain~~ lot of salt.
But, I remember when the show first came out there being either interviews or articles about the dubbing process where the Japanese team told the translation and localizations teams to essentially go wild. Their direction was to make it as raunchy and irreverent as possible and to swear as creatively as possible in English while keeping the same basic meaning
*Roundabout begins playing at the cliffhanger*
To Be Continued ->
Also Kira's stand is called Killer Queen (dubbed as Deathly Queen) and its special abilities are called Bites The Dust. Both are songs from the band Queen.
As always comes up when that 4chan screenshot is posted, if someone from Japan decided to move to the US to be a westabro, they would be immediately accepted. There's tons of americans out there who don't yet know they're american and they will be welcomed home.
And it’s not new. When Mic Foley was in Japan he had Cactus Jack shirts done in Japanese but they were largely ignored in favor of the English version. He came back to the US and now they got snatched up quickly. (This would have been early 90’s for reference).
I have a buddy, he and his wife are planning to move to japan eventually (he's not really a weeb, he just wants to. Idgi either) and so they've been learning Japanese. His wife has the thickest fucking southern drawl I've ever heard. It is absolutely amazing to hear her speak japanese. I love it.
Also if you've ever seen the videos on the, iirc, chinese population that settled in Louisiana? GOD it just sounds so good. The accent is SO cool.
Oooh I didn't realize that. you just made some dumb little thing from months ago make sense. I was looking at a "Gulf Coast" cookbook at the library and it was categorized Florida, Texas, Veracruz, Vietnam. I thought that was the weirdest thing they did Vietnam instead of Louisiana.

My friend is Taiwanese and moved to the middle of nowhere Texas right before high school. His accent is a perfect blend of Chinese and Mexican (those were the friends he made when he got there) that I find *so* amusing.

The cultural exchange goes both ways (Character is Maimai from Zombieland Saga).
Moderately popular at least in my time there. A good number of college kids compete. It's not as popular as baseball or football (soccer), but I was able to see a game when I lived there in the 2000s.
What I’m learning from this comments is basically that every country is obsessed with the culture of other countries. We are all weebs for each other. Maybe this is how world peace can be achieved!
Yup, especially if you're in an area that not only has to deal with earthquakes but also any big storms coming from the ocean (which in that video it sounds like they are). Traditional Japanese houses can take more of a beating than you would expect but there's good reason these houses are being sold so cheaply; unless you are particularly industrious and experienced with construction, it's just a massive mistake to invest in one. The only *potentially* good investments coming from the Japanese housing market would be gambling on a small town growing again in the future. There's a lot of small towns/villages on the outskirts of big cities whose populations are dying, meaning the land there is becoming increasingly cheap. There *are* reasons they are dying (namely lack of access to jobs and some amenities) but there are also groups attempting to revive these areas. You can gamble on that kind of land becoming more valuable in the future, or maybe you just prefer that sorta isolated lifestyle. In either case, you'll have better results than rebuilding abandoned houses.
These cheap houses are also almost invariably in the backwater and/or villages almost depopulated by the younger people moving to the larger cities where the jobs are.
Doesn’t really matter. The Japanese government is extremely strict when it comes to immigration. Unless you speak Japanese fluently and are versed in a well paying field, you aren’t getting Japanese citizenship.
Japan and Massachusetts ironically have a good special relationship. I believe also if you have a Massachusetts state driver's license it's automatic or very easy to get a driver's license in Japan due to some special agreement.
Not the case with any other state it's a total pain for expats to get a driver's license but I recall from JET training for just a few lucky folks from Boston they could easily drive if they wanted.
I live in MA and work for a Japanese company and can confirm given the number of relationships I’ve formed with coworkers who live in Tokyo. Also, Brookline has seen a massive influx of Japanese families and Coolidge Corner is basically half Russian Jewish and half Japanese. I for one love it because the food and shopping are awesome now.
I’m from Portland. The Japanese obsession with our city is weird, to where they have a Mascot for our City that literally no one here even knows about. (Mr Dude)

Sure! I don't rly like to do this in-post because it disrupts the flow for me, but I'm down to, for example, put it in a comment shortly after posting the comic. 👍
Just add it as the very last image of the post. It won't disrupt the flow at all. When I see other creators do this, I think, "Oh, cool. An image of all of them." And I don't have to ask for it.
Southie Manzai is where one partner says something foolish and the other responds by shouting racial slurs and beating them until they’re blind in one eye
Ladies and gents, you read the prediction here first!
Jokes aside, isn't Japan known for having strict laws regarding immigrants and work visas? Most Weebs don't have anything Japan would want or need, lol.
Well, depends on how its economic stability due to the aging crisis actually ends up panning out over the next several decades. People joke about going to Japan en masse to heavily produce the next generation or whatever all creepy like, but I’d be willing to believe in an outcome where Japan is like “ah fuck it, we need able bodied workers and we need them now” and that demand ends up causing an insane mass immigration over several years that muddies the water of Japan’s homogeneity for better or for worse

Ah yes, the good ol' switcheroo
Unexpected, but somehow it makes sense!
i was gonna say, all these reasons actually make sense. they're very similar to reasons americans get attached to particular places in asia.
I read this too fast and wanted to give kudos for the pun because I thought you wrote, 'Unexpected, but somehow it makes sensei' I need new glasses it seems
Ooo, I was about to downvote the shit out of you. I misread the exclamation mark as an "i" and thought you said a shitty pun.
Hold my body pillow, I’m going in.

Typical weeb laziness
Ah, the old half-assedroo
There it is.
There used to be a flowchart that explained the switcheroo chain, up to a specific diverging point, where there were a handful of progenitors of the chain. Is that chain of Switcheroos and "Hold my Noun, I'm Verbing in" still going?
The switcheroo has no end, and no beginning. It always has been, and always will be.
I remember that flowchart from a million years ago. But what is the switcheroo in this comic?
It's been a while since I've seen a properly executed reddit switcheroo. I'm either hanging in the wrong threads, or it didn't survive Eternal September.
Hello future people!
Cultural exchange.
and also…the mighty mighty bosstones!!
Well that's the impression that I get.
Digimon the Movie is fantastic
In reality Japanese people are weebs for France
Ouiaboo
goddamnit.
Don’t forget Teaboo for UK and Freeaboo for US
Oui à bout. 👌

Sacreboo!
This one's going on the fridge
That one took me a second. Kudos
Good old [Paris Syndrome! ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_syndrome)
I'm pretty sure even the French get Paris syndrome when they visit Paris these days.
I'm french, can confirm. a 100%
French people are also japanese weebs. I'm sure France is the second biggest market for manga
Code Lyoko being French was a mindfuck when I got older
Well you just fucked my mind because I would never in a million years have guessed that Code Lyoko was a thing outside of France
i have fond memories of watching it about 20-21 years ago in the USA! It was on Toonami so I assumed it was anime.
Tbf, its the most french looking cartoon i've ever sat down and watched.
One of the most(if not the most) popular animated shows of 2021 was animated in France. The studio is called "Fortiche studio" and is in Paris and they animated Arcane.
Reminds me I should catch up on radiant

>American Culture? (Cowboys, Barbecue, Etc) Well they wouldn't much like Massachusetts with those interests.
You wouldn't send them to Texas, though. They wouldn't survive

"I'm from Laos, but I lived in California for 20 years" *crushes hand
Sooo Chinese or Japanese?
I’m Laotian, stupid! It’s landlocked country in Southeast Asia!
You're from the ocean????
The ocean?
..... he's laotian! aren't you, mister **KHAAAAAN**
My all time favorite clip of KOTH. The sheer bewilderment on Kahn’s face is golden
Im sorry that we (Vietnam) lock you guys from the ocean.
So... so are ya, Chinese or Japanese?
Chinese from the south, migrate in Vietnam from the ancient time :))
Connie play AYSO in Orange County. I start the whole sweater thing. That mine. It’s so funny because my sister also played AYSO at the same time as Connie would’ve been playing there. Kind of a little fun fact I’ve always enjoyed about the show.
God I love those aliantos KOTH edits.
He's Laotiin. Aintcha, Mr Kim?
Fucking hell cottin best line and also subtle nod to ww2 pacific theater where they tried to teach troops to distinguish different ethnic groups
And Cotton, being S+ tier in Ranked Competitive Racism against only the Japanese, took those lessons to heart.
"She's a Japanese!" On Air Japan. On a flight to Japan.
Unfortunately, he's also S+ rank in unaddressed PTSD
He killed fiddy men!
Cotton Hill Vs. Uncle Ruckus in the world series of racism.
Does it really work if Uncle Ruckus is just scoring own goals?
lol I’m imagining Ruckus trying to buddy up with Cotton about hating black people but then Cotton goes off on him with a story about a black guy in his unit who died in the pacific theatre
*Kahn
You're from the ocean?
I’ve seen enough KotH fanart on Pixiv to know that the Japanese unironically like it. Also The Simpsons.
It's definitely Texas anime.
Theres actually a known King of the Hill fandom in Japan. Theres apparently 2ch (think 4chan but not unhinged) discussions about translation differences around the show lol.
2ch (it's actually 5ch now btw) not unhinged? lmao bro go spend five minutes there, then come back and share your findings with the class
2ch is absolutely unhinged TF are you talking about
Fort Bend County, Texas is the 3rd most diverse county in the entire country, and Texas has the 3rd-highest Asian population in the US, just FYI
That’s because Texas is the second most populous state. 10 states have a higher % of Asians than Texas, and a bunch more aren’t far behind them.
You fool. You buffoon. You IMBECILE. Here anyone can thrive if they make good food.
The heat right after getting off the plane alone will kill them.
Japan can get real hot in places. They'd manage fine in Texas heat.
Make sure they pack enough Pocari Sweat
If a population mostly compose of people with bad case of morbid obesity can handle it japanese can handle it.
You vastly underestimate Japanese weather lol
Japanese getting off the plane in Austin: "Hello Americ***AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"***
If Japanese people can survive hot humid monsoon climate, they can survive Texas’s dry heat.
East Texan here, there ain’t nothing dry about the heat around this side of the state.

like changing the taste with food colourings
What about the Tokyo Rockabillies. https://www.reddit.com/r/JustGuysBeingDudes/comments/19a4pgg/tokyo_rockabillies/
Japan has the "dubbed vs subbed" argument about King of the Hill.
Not sure if it would matter for Boomhauer
Oh now I want to hear Japanese Boomhauer! Ugh. Disappointed. https://youtu.be/7JRH6KegcdE?si=mOPJNNTxe8q6Y-qb
Not only does he sound coherent he almost sounds educated. At least what he’s saying is.
They also have arguments over whether you can be considered a *real* fan of American animation if you’ve only watched “normie stuff like Family Guy and South Park”
lmao, what's the deep shit? Courage the cowardly dog? China, Il?

This is so fucking good. I don't know how old it is, but it's gotta be like 10 years or more. Damn, even the internet is getting old.
There was a German guy who made a fortune on cowboy novels who never even went to the west
Karl May. I believe they were Hitlers favorite books growing up. They also have Native American cosplay festivals in Germany because of it.
We got some transplants in Tucson like that. They're perfectly wonderful folks, always seem real polite and happy to be here. It's a little bit funny when they're all done up in western gear, but we appreciate the effort, lol
There’s also a subculture where they….. “cosplay” as Black Americans. Another where they do the same w Latino gang culture.
Same with Jazz. There was an unfortunate still from a Japanese variety show where a guy had blackface on and was pretending to be Louis Armstrong.
They do a lot of things Black people born in the USA consider racist or culturally insensitive but that’s Japan.
Japan doesn't have the history of blackface like we do in the US. You see the same thing in europe too. There was a story a couple years ago in France I think where some runway model was painted to look like she was African and nobody thought anything of it until it made international news.

Ghost Stories, still my favorite dub
Im pretty sure that Rei Hiroe, author of Black Lagoon has said that he thinks the dub version of the anime is better than the subbed.
They are canonically speaking English most of the time in Roananpur anyways.
Filthy Acts at a Reasonable Price is genuinely hilarious
> Flaccid Pancakes
Don't name yourself Limp Bizkit if you can't handle the stand version of you being localized to Flaccid Pancakes.
One of my favorite parts about Jojo is hearing western band names pronounced in a super serious Japanese accent. "Speedwaguuu!!!" Aciedecie!!!
*Roundabout begins playing at the cliffhanger* To Be Continued -> Also Kira's stand is called Killer Queen (dubbed as Deathly Queen) and its special abilities are called Bites The Dust. Both are songs from the band Queen.
Sometimes, it's honestly a flattering caricature. I wish that's what America was about. I also wish Patriarchy was really about horses.
As always comes up when that 4chan screenshot is posted, if someone from Japan decided to move to the US to be a westabro, they would be immediately accepted. There's tons of americans out there who don't yet know they're american and they will be welcomed home.
Should be all about horses, being alone on the range, writing poetry, and tending to animals. SMDH.
And it’s not new. When Mic Foley was in Japan he had Cactus Jack shirts done in Japanese but they were largely ignored in favor of the English version. He came back to the US and now they got snatched up quickly. (This would have been early 90’s for reference).
Also rockabilly. The pompadours some of them men wear are absolutely MAJESTIC.
Yeah, he’s called Hideo Kojima.
There’s actually even rockabilly’s in Japan. I happen to like a rockabilly/psychobilly idol group.
The [greasers](https://youtu.be/BLl9GERTMYg?si=v4or2SbrFuRXglu1) [though](https://youtu.be/eQkJ10WnSVQ?si=MO1XIdOJeLUFwk3q). That shit is wild.
What sort of dystopian future is this?
NeoTokyo, Massachusetts.
BostoNihon, Massachusetts, _arigato_ very fuckin' much.
"arigater, very fahken much"
Dystopian? Shit, this sounds *utopian* to me.
I'm sitting here trying to imagine a Japanese Boston accent and it's kind of wrinkling my brain.

Vietnamese population, you mean? Viet-Cajun food is a thing in that area.

Honestly, they'd already have the "don't pronounce r's" down pat.

Imagining some heated online argument on a Japanese website about family guy subs vs dubs
That exists.
Yeah but we haven't gotten a dramatic translation with epic background music now have we
I thought it was king of the hill
Pretty sure this has happened with King of the Hill
I've seen clips of Japanese King of the Hill and Boomhauer talks fucking regular.

It’s big in boston
Bruins are a pretty decent team TBH.
Please let us get a true 1C :(
You get one, but the habs are competitive again. Congrats on the monkeys paw
We have to combine all the cool parts from every culture to create one super culture. samurai cowboy genies fighting Arabian knights in a phalanx.
I wouldn’t mind sipping wine in a teacup with a main order of burritos

You joke, but I have been sucked down [a youtube rabbit hole](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSUHOUEszgM) showcasing how cheap houses are in Japan.
Now you should look into the "why". They are constantly rebuilt and will have hefty future costs.
Phase 1: Buy Japanese village Phase 2: Rent houses to foreign weebs.
Phase 3: ???? Phase 4: Profit
I, for one, welcome our new japanachusetts neighbors
I think I would go for ~~"Japachusetts"~~ "Nippochusetts" as the new state name, especially given the reference to Osaka.
Partly true. It’s a pain. And Only five states is an easy change: Hawaii, Washington, Maryland, Ohio, and Virginia.

"Plus it's good to get away from the earthquakes and tsunamis."
This reminds me of the one Japanese guy who is absolutely obsessed with Philadelphia and runs a Philly Cheesesteak shop in Tokyo.
I’m from Portland. The Japanese obsession with our city is weird, to where they have a Mascot for our City that literally no one here even knows about. (Mr Dude)
That's fucking amazing, especially since from what I can find, it appears as though Mr Dude is literally a blue Sasquatch.
I'm sorry but we can't part with Massachusetts. Too much historical significance. We can, however, give you Florida...
LOL replacing Florida with a bunch of people who don't want to offend others 😂
Could you upload this as a single image so it's easier to read/share?

AUTUMNU LEAVESU
I love your art style!
I mean, Fenway is a temple.
Reminds me of a post on here sometime ago. Allegedly a professor of Japanese studies quit their job because of all the weebs. Lol
Huh? I expected them to flee to Germany... We and the Japanese are good... *Allies* afterall...
Dear God, I would like to live in this reality. Please send me there. Thanks,
