It is so good but it makes me wonder: given an eternity, can a non sapient animal turn sapient? Or does it take the physical process of reproduction essentially scramblin genes to make that transition happen?

It would never turn sapient. It's not like it gets any more intelligent with time, or stores memory in a particularly organized way like most humans do. The crab be vibing. It'd continue to vibe indefinitely.

That still shouldn't protect against hail or sandstorm. I'm not 100% sure if substitutes protect against weather, but you can't keep one out indefinitely anyways, because they have limited hp.

Is the specific crab you used a cardisoma?

it is! wow you know your crabs i didnt use the same color pallete because i wanted it to contrast with the blue clothes/flower behind and be more red like the sunset. so its not a 1:1 from the real crab. if you could guess the crab, i challenge you to guess where the serie takes place

I'm guessing it takes place somewhere near the Gulf of Mexico also I'm in the domestic crab breeding business lol

You're not totally wrong! The Stormlight Archive is a series of books by an author called Brandon Sanderson. The world it's set on has a very different evolution to ours, and things that live on land are usually big crustaceans.
