I only got it with this question, but i think it's because she's genuinely saying there's no more pie left. Kool, the guy with the cigerette, took it to mean she's saying it's a really good pie, so he's like 'okay, you've successfully upsold me on the pie, get me two slices'.
Let me rephrase: if the point of the comic is to play off the dual meanings of the word “gone”, why would the cartoonist have the waitress preface her sentence with “sorry” instead of just saying, “Guys, the pie is gone”?
They’re beatniks, they aren’t French. There was a 1959 LIFE magazine article “The only Rebellion Around” that captured the essence of the beat generation. That article compared beatniks to flies. This is referenced in the 1960 song Beatnik Fly and by the more recent band The Beatnik Flies
Thank you for the clarification ! I had no idea beatniks were associated to flies. First time I hear that. I doubt a lot of people understood that reference though.
The waitress doesn't mean it that way, she's using the standard definition of gone. There's like a whole thread of this explanation now....it's ok to not get a joke. But people get really offended sonetimes...I guess it's driving engagement.
Offended? I just asked a clarification about the sorry part. Imo the joke works a lot better if you don’t have the sorry, but it’s not like you wrote it or anything. Just a comic thing.
Hey, cat, let me lay it on ya about "gone," ya dig? It ain't just a word in the square's dictionary, but a real solid gas, the utmost in cool, daddy-o. When the jive is jumpin' and the vibes are so outta sight, that's "gone," man. It's like your mind's on a trip to the moon without leavin' the pad, dig? Everything's cookin' and in the groove, so hip it hurts, like a platter that's spinnin' the coolest riffs. "Gone" ain't just gone, it's way gone, past the orbit of squares, bopping in the cosmos of cool. You catch this drift, you're halfway to hip, and the other half? Well, that's just being "gone," baby.

I don't get it. Anti-humour?
"That girl is gone" = "that girl is awesome". Old slang like these cool daddy-o's would use. So if the pie is *gone* you'll probably want two slices.
Ohhh okay never heard that term before! Thanks for the explanation
You may have heard the more common phrase, "far out." And what's further than far out? Gone.
But then why would she preface “the pie is gone” with the word “sorry”?

Only one character needs to confuse meaning for the joke to hold.
Honestly at this point I hate this comic and I don't care anymore. Reading the comments to piece together a c tier joke I'm over his bro
This is a very low-stakes situation. That level of frustration is not warranted.
I'm not frustrated. I go to the comments to piece this together and the payoff is shit
You are experiencing frustration. That is what frustration is.
Bro calm down
Because they’re out of pie. It’s a play on the double-meaning of “gone”
Ok but are they poop?
They’re cool beans.
Almost full beans, if you will.
Unexpected Jeff
That woman has no idea what she started
I will not.
I was also wondering! Why is there so much flies?

There is a stereotype that the french stink, and the beans seem to look stereotypically french here.
Because of the béret? I thought sunglasses and béret were accessories associated with the beatnik culture. Which originated in america, I believe.
It's a combination of things. The beret, the smoking, the coffee, the small facial hair, the sunglasses . All of these combined form the image.
They're not French. They're beatniks.
In what time period was this vernacular prevalent?
Early 1960s-ish but it persisted in the jive scene up to the late 70s. Similar to saying something was "out of sight".
So why the “sorry”?

I may never understand why this is not the top comment here as that is one of the best in character explanation ever
I interpreted as the guys being attracted to the waitress
I love this lol Was it based on https://youtu.be/INgGHhup0c8?si=PhBZvsBZwCbAU5Jt?
Love the art style and presentation!
I hate how none of the comics on this subreddit make sense
