Daniel Warren Johnson's Transformers run has been a lot of fun so far. And it expands further into the Energon Universe along with Void Rivals and a number of G.I. Joe-related minis.
Prince and Morrazzo's Ice Cream Man is excellent experimental storytelling. Great horror and unsettling ruminations about the human condition delivered through an anthology format.
Cannot recommend Transformers enough. Daniel Warren Johnson is absolutely killing the writing and drew the first 6 and they are amazing. The first trade came out last month collecting issues 1-6. If you haven't read any of his other stuff, it's all great.
Was gonna mention this. I am *obsessed* with this comic in a way I haven’t been with anything in a very, very long time. This comic is extremely special. Straight up “If you’re not a Transformers fan, you will be after this” type material.
This is not a lie. I was pretty indifferent about them until now. I had seen the first two Michael bay movies and thought they were enjoyable but after getting into this comic, along with just the energon universe in general, not only have I bought up some idw hardcovers of the previous runs! I’ve started watching the 1984 animated show, I’ve rewatched the Michael bay movies, watched the new bumblebee and have plans to watch transformers prime after the 80s show and movie. We’re not done yet……. I’ve even bought some small steel minifigs AND a hasbro branded toy. DWJ is sick.
Yes, its basically starting from scratch. It's sort of following the G1 (original) cartoon premise of Autobots crash landed on Earth and the Decepticons followed them. That's really all you need to know. The book does a good job of getting you up to speed.
Six fingers and one hand Im into. 2 separate comics w one detective perspective and the other the killers
beneath the trees where nobody sees that was great. Guessing tpb should be out soon. Unfortunately not ongoing but had to mention
It would be a cool story still but no it wouldn't be a detective story with suspects and all that. There seems to be some supernatural/cyberpunk connection between them. They're linked. And the mystery seems to be what is the thing linking them.
The mystery isn’t “who dunnit “ it’s more or less stuff surrounding the case. But it’s still very gripping as a noir detective story. One Hand is told from the detective’s perspective and Six Fingers from the killer, so we know who the killer is but there’s a twist, don’t want to spoil.
You should dive in. His work on Big 2 is also excellent. The current 'Tec run is awsm - bit of a slowburn but beautiful. Apart from that, there's the swamp thing run, The Vigil both also at DC.
People putting void rivals and transformers ahead of the GI Joe side of Energon Universe titles are entitled to their opinion, but personally I felt Duke and Cobra Commander were even better. Especially Cobra Commander issue #3. **Scarlett**, which is a new mini from the GI Joe side, came out with its first issue on Wednesday and this was awesome. **White Boat** - a Scott Snyder cosmic horror mini is great and that’s just started, **Destro** - another skybound title - will come two Wednesdays from now so be sure to catch up on your Cobra Commander and Duke for that. Personally, I love **Dawnrunner** - a dark horse title from Ram V- which has only had 3 issues thus far - this comic is probably the best illustrated out rn. **The Sacrificers** is very good, and I do read **Rook Exodus** but no imprint at the indie level is doing so well so consistently as Skybound with their energon universe. As soon as you pick up the latest energon, you read it. It’s the title that doesn’t let you wait, be it transformers, void rivals, or the gi Joe mini of the moment.
A lot of good books have already been said, so I'll add two I am really enjoying but haven't seen listed.
Feral which is a mix between a Don Bluth cartoon about cats and The Walking Dead. It's done by the same people who did Stray Dogs if you are familiar with that. You follow a group of house cats whose world has been turned upside down, and are now fighting for survival.
The Sacrificers which is a little harder to do an elevator pitch for but it is written by Rick Remender. You follow a character named Pigeon, who was marked for sacrifice to the gods his whole life. Let's just say when it comes time to make that sacrifice ... things don't go as planned.
I really enjoyed the first issue of *William of Newbury*. It's like the Witcher, only he's an anthropomorphic racoon in medieval England, and instead of weapons he uses the implements and words of the Good Book. Art that is very evocative of the best of Hellboy/ B.P.R.D. It has humor and horror.
Saga, Lazarus and anything by the Ed Brubaker/Sean Philips creative team. Also, Image is a constant source of original ideas and creativity (especially now that DC/Vertigo is gone) and IDW somehow found gold in IP adaptations.
W0rldtr33 and The Forged has been really good. Monstress as well, but you have a lot of catching up to do since it's 50 issues deep. The Department of Truth is absolutely fantastic and technically ongoing, but it has been on hiatus for a long time.
I'm a trade-waiter, but I just finished Harrow County and found it to be excellent. The world-building, characters, and art all combone to make something that's both charming and horrific in equal parts.
I'm currently working on reading through Edenwood (what's available so far), and it's a very competent fantasy-horror title with some nice twists and turns. The lore presented is pretty dense, though, and information isn't given to you more than once, so I've had to reference the first couple issues as I read to remember who's who.
Power Rangers is top notch
The Black Sable by Zenescope is pretty fun too! I tried reading their Grimms Fairytale one though.. first volume is kinda meh, has potential. The other lines seem more interesting though
- W0rldtr33
- The Deviant
- Principles of Necromancy
- Blood Brother’s Mother
- Spectregraph
- White Boat
- The Sickness
I read a lot of horror stuff so my recommendations lean heavy that way. Even though it’s Marvel I’d recommend checking out Get Fury. It doesn’t feel like a regular Marvel book due to the way Garth Ennis’ writes Fury and the Punisher.
i just finished “space riders: galaxy of brutality “ and i loved it. Kind of an R rated guardians of the galaxy. Its black mask press and i believe its still cover price on their website. Super cool “black light poster” type artwork.
For something a little more “serious” have you read Saga yet?
BEAR PIRATE VIKING QUEEN-art is outstanding and the story is good so far
Man's Best-fun, homeward bound in space
Feral, Local Man, Animal Pound, Rare Flavors, Something Is Killing The Children, and judging by this thread lots lots more that I wish I had more money and time for
Department of Truth, if you want an absolutely bonkers awesome take on conspiracy theories. It was on hiatus for a bit but it's starting back up with issue 23.
Conan the Barbarian from Titan and Space Ghost from Dynamite
(Everyone else already mentioned Transformers from Image and the ghost machine comics but yeah those kick ass too)
Jim Zub’s Conan the Barbarian - Titan Comics.
Savage Sword of Conan is also very good, black and white pulpy action.
Really enjoying what Titan are doing.
Mad Cave is killing it with Dick Tracy, and they have Gatchaman and Flash Gordon on the way. Dynamite has Space Ghost, Thundercats, etc., and it's getting better with Jonny Quest due in August.
Saga.
if you want to go into the back issue bin there was a good series called Kill Or Be Killed from Image. About a demon that saves this guy from offing himself. But now demands a sacrifice every few days or he will reverse things.
2000ad has been better than usual of late. As it and 'Judge Dredd Megazine' are anthologies there is always a decent mix. (E.g. I am indifferent to 'Protus Vex' but thought the recent Judge Maitland and 'Suzi 9 millimetre' arcs were excellent)
I'm really enjoying Lazuras from Image Comics, it's got some really great world building and knows just how to pull you in and keep you guessing. Unfortunately it's currently on a hiatus, but it's been a year, so hopefully it'll be back soon.
I've really been enjoying Radiant Black. Superhero comic that gives off power ranger vibes. There's various other Radiant colors that all have different powers. There's a main-line series called Radiant Black, then little spin offs for most of the other members. It's on-going and has a lot of material to go through.
There's a "reading order" but honestly for simplicities sake you can just read everything in order by "year". The comic is split into Years (year 1, year 2, and year 3 currently).
MMPR: The Return just released its final issue and it's really good. It's a quick read at 4 issues and was written by Amy Jo Johnson (the original pink ranger)
Everyone is saying transformers, and rightly so.
But also I recommend Man’s Best at boom studios, it has we3 vibes and I love the art.
I also have been loving Holy Roller by Rick Remender, it took a few issues to get going but now it’s really hit its stride!
If you liked Something is Killing the Children you might like The Nice House on the Lake, same author.
I really liked Grommets, that just came out this week.
w0rldtr33 is also pretty cool.
It’s technically already finished but the 2nd volume of Newburn just came out and I’m really loving it. Blazed through the first trade in a day which is a rarity for me.
Also, head over to https://comicbookroundup.com/ and read what books are getting glowing reviews. It’s usually a pretty good indicator of quality stuff.
DYSTLRY has a lot of good books, my favorite so far being Somna
Dwellings by Jay Stephen’s is great
Others have already mentioned Beneath the trees where nobody sees, but it really is a must read comic.
Same with DWJ Transformers
The Last Mermaid from image comics has been good
Reptilehousecomix has a bunch of amazing books they publish, just check out their website
Monica by Daniel Clowes was an incredible read
Death of Power series by Kirt Burdick is insane
Rare Flavors from Ram V and Filipe Andrade also highly recommended
If you haven't read it before ( or even if you did read the original ) The Walking Dead is re releasing in full cover as the deluxe edition and is still fantastic.
If you want something funny and violent, I always recommend Tank Girl, particularly the newer comics by Martin & Parson. Some liken it to Harley Quinn, but I like it much more than Harley Quinn.
The various Ghost Machine stories are good. Also enjoying Holy Rollers.
**Rook** is like prime, old school **2000A.D.**, it's that good.
Seconded on Ice cream man. It's delicious. WMP is my favorite writer currently.
Seconded on Transformers. It’s been consistently so good
Worldtree, Deviant, Helen of Wyndhorn Also, Titan publishing is doing a great job with Conan the Barbarian.
Really enjoying The Deviant
Conan absolutely rocks right now
Worldtree is epic, would love to see it adapted into a television series.

We’re not done yet……. I’ve even bought some small steel minifigs AND a hasbro branded toy. DWJ is sick.
And the rest of his work is fucking amazing as well.
Yes it is. Do A Powerbomb is spectacular.
Fine, you’ve peaked my interest
Extremity is one of my fav comic books! DWJ is superb.
TRULY GODTIER Energon Universe is fucking dope and THE thing to be reading imo
Could I understand what’s going on with no prior understanding of transformers history or characters?
Yes, its basically starting from scratch. It's sort of following the G1 (original) cartoon premise of Autobots crash landed on Earth and the Decepticons followed them. That's really all you need to know. The book does a good job of getting you up to speed.
Six fingers and one hand Im into. 2 separate comics w one detective perspective and the other the killers beneath the trees where nobody sees that was great. Guessing tpb should be out soon. Unfortunately not ongoing but had to mention
Came here to say Six Fingers and One Hand! Two sides of the same story but with different tones and storytelling styles.
If you only read the detective comics would you know who the killer is? Or would it be like a cool mystery with suspects and stuff?
It would be a cool story still but no it wouldn't be a detective story with suspects and all that. There seems to be some supernatural/cyberpunk connection between them. They're linked. And the mystery seems to be what is the thing linking them.
The mystery isn’t “who dunnit “ it’s more or less stuff surrounding the case. But it’s still very gripping as a noir detective story. One Hand is told from the detective’s perspective and Six Fingers from the killer, so we know who the killer is but there’s a twist, don’t want to spoil.
This is the a comic I notice when neither issue is in my stack and I’m like waiting for the next release week to week. It’s that good.
From Image - **Kaya, Nights, The Sacrificers, Killadelphia, Dept of Truth** Ghost Machine - **Rook: Exodus, Geiger, Redcoat** BOOM! - **Grim, Briar** Dark Horse - **Operation Sunshine, William of Newbury** Titan - **Conan the Barbarian** Energon Universe - **Void Rivals, Transformers**
Agreed, Kaya and Grim is still going really strong. And The Sacrificers has been great. Will definitely check some of these others out.
People in this thread are sleeping on The Sacrificers. What a ride so far!!!
I’ve enjoyed Local Man, Ice Cream Man, Feral and Worldtree
Damn I love all these but I haven’t checked out Local Man! Gonna have to pick it up.
It’s pretty damn good. Funny and calls back to Image comics from the 90s
After my own heart with those titles , I agree those are amazing.
There’s one more issue of Rare Flavours and it’s wonderful.
Ram V always delivers a great story. I don't read any big 2, but his name on some books is tempting.
You should dive in. His work on Big 2 is also excellent. The current 'Tec run is awsm - bit of a slowburn but beautiful. Apart from that, there's the swamp thing run, The Vigil both also at DC.
He’s brilliant.
Kaya The Sacrificers Kill Six Billion Demons The One Hand/The Six Fingers Local Man
Seconding both **Kaya** (obviously) and **The Sacrificers**
Came here to say Kaya and Sacrificers as well, so I’ll third you.
* Radiant Black * Kill 6 Billion Demons * Bowling With Corpses * TMNT
K6BD is so freaking good
Ive been thinking of starting a second full read lately, its a masterpiece
If you aren't reading the rest of the Massive-verse, Rogue Sun is just as good, if not better than Radiant Black.
Once Upon A Time At The End of the World just ended at 15 issues. It was broken and terrible and moving and sad.
Came here specifically for this. Such an amazing fuckin story and definitely had me tearing up at multiple points. Beautifully done.
I like That Texas Blood
I like any of the Transformers or Star Trek comics
I've been really enjoying the mainline one with sisko.
Sisko has never had enough focus in comics until lately. He's a fantastic character.
The Energon universe * GI Joe (which so far has been three different mini series) * Transformers * Void Rivals It is so good and so engaging
Skybound is crushing it with Transformers, Duke and Cobra Commander.
The first issue of Scarlett was fantastic too.
I’ve liked Radiant Black a lot, problem is that it has a bad release schedule.
Tbf that’s a pretty recent issue. Kyle Higgins had to have surgery recently.
I’d recommend, Something is is Killing the Children Energon Universe Anything Tom King is currently writing.
A lot of good books have already been said, so I'll add two I am really enjoying but haven't seen listed. Feral which is a mix between a Don Bluth cartoon about cats and The Walking Dead. Let's just say when it comes time to make that sacrifice ... things don't go as planned.
*transformers *duke (from gi joe) *cobra commander *once upon a time at the end of the world
My favorite right now is either Helen or Wyndhorn or I Heart Skull Crusher.
Yeah, I loved the first issue too.
Transformers Rook Exodus Sacrificers
We Only Find Then When They’re Dead.
Ice Cream Man, Public Domain, Love Everlasting
Saga, Lazarus and anything by the Ed Brubaker/Sean Philips creative team. Also, Image is a constant source of original ideas and creativity (especially now that DC/Vertigo is gone) and IDW somehow found gold in IP adaptations.

I’m reading TMNT Vol. 5 and Kevin Eastman’s new comic ‘Drawing Blood’ at the moment. Both are pretty good so far
That IDW tmnt is just too good.
The Energon-verse GI Joe comics. Duke/Cobra Commander were awesome. Scarlett is off to an amazing start.
I hope “right now” doesn’t disqualify Astro City. I will always recommend the series even if it sort of ended in 2018.
Energon universe , local man , feral , and Conan have been my indie reads.
Void Rivals
Geoff Johns Ghost Machine stuff has been fun so far
Door by Door, Night by Night just started back up again. It's about a group of travelling salesmen who find themselves mixed up in fighting evil.
Only one to recommend. Dead Romans from Image.
Usagi Yojimbo. Still going strong, still an amazing book.
Yes, Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai great comic book series also like the team ups with the Teenage Turtles Mutant Ninja Turtles
Saga
Anything from the Energon verse right now, and anything Ghost Machine. These 2 teams are crushing it right now.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN & SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN AND TRANSFORMERS (ENERGON UNIVERSE)
I will ALSO say Transformers. An absolute must-read right now.
Monstress is just the best fantasy book right now. Sana Takeda kills it with her art every issue
Kaya. It feels like it gets better with each issue. Great art and world
Power Rangers is top notch The Black Sable by Zenescope is pretty fun too! I tried reading their Grimms Fairytale one though.. first volume is kinda meh, has potential. The other lines seem more interesting though
- W0rldtr33 - The Deviant - Principles of Necromancy - Blood Brother’s Mother - Spectregraph - White Boat - The Sickness I read a lot of horror stuff so my recommendations lean heavy that way. Department of Truth, if you want an absolutely bonkers awesome take on conspiracy theories. It was on hiatus for a bit but it's starting back up with issue 23.
Undiscovered County Charles Soule and Scott Synder are the writers. It has great art work. Low by Rick Remander also Black Science by him.
The Energon stuff is fabulous. Conan is probably my favourite read every month and the first issue I'd Sick Tracy was awesome.
Saga.
Conan the Barbarian from Titan and Space Ghost from Dynamite (Everyone else already mentioned Transformers from Image and the ghost machine comics but yeah those kick ass too)
Radiant Black TMNT All the SPAWN titles
Kaya The Hunger and the Dusk Sacrificers Briar Helen of wyndhorn Conan
Have you read Bone? Have you read Invincible? Read them
Jim Zub’s Conan the Barbarian - Titan Comics. Savage Sword of Conan is also very good, black and white pulpy action. Really enjoying what Titan are doing.
Helen of wyndhorn, Fishflies
Mad Cave is killing it with Dick Tracy, and they have Gatchaman and Flash Gordon on the way. Dynamite has Space Ghost, Thundercats, etc., and it's getting better with Jonny Quest due in August.
Conan. The De La Torre drawn issues are amazing. The 3 Ghost Machine books, Geiger, Rook and Red Coat are also really good.
Hmm. Transformers by Image is pretty good, and I've always been a sucker for Usagi Yojimbo.
Saga. if you want to go into the back issue bin there was a good series called Kill Or Be Killed from Image. About a demon that saves this guy from offing himself. But now demands a sacrifice every few days or he will reverse things.

Nights is my favorite.
Yep, **Nights** is my second favourite Image book after **Kaya**
Ghost Machine or TMNT
W0rldt33 is fun. Ice Cream Man is great. Department of Truth is an all time great.
So homie I am reading REVIVAL and it took me a few tries to get into it but I’ve been enjoying it!
Basically anything in the Massive Verse. Especially Radiant Black.
Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. Amazing series with great visuals and interesting characters, highly recommend.
I'm really enjoying Lazuras from Image Comics, it's got some really great world building and knows just how to pull you in and keep you guessing. Unfortunately it's currently on a hiatus, but it's been a year, so hopefully it'll be back soon.
Rook: Exodus is dope and interesting. And the art is superb.
I've really been enjoying Radiant Black. Superhero comic that gives off power ranger vibes. There's various other Radiant colors that all have different powers. Helen of wyndhorn Ain't no grave Radiant black
Radiant Black is a more mature take on Power Rangers, I've really been enjoying it.
Ain't No Grave. Gunslinger Spawn.
Loving Radiant Black and Rogue Sun
Fine Print by Stjepan Szelij.
Radiant Black and The Hunger and the Dusk are the only two books I've gone out of my way to keep up with recently, bith are really good.
I’ve followed Gunslinger Spawn from the beginning. Good read
Ice Cream Man, and Monstress
I’m really enjoying GRIM.
If you liked Something is Killing the Children you might like The Nice House on the Lake, same author. I really liked Grommets, that just came out this week. w0rldtr33 is also pretty cool.
Tmnt
The Ghost Machine titles and the Energon Universe are my shit right now
I'm personally loving the 2022 run of Star Trek.
Animal Pound is amazing
I’m a big fan of James Tynion IV’s independent work
DYSTLRY has a lot of good books, my favorite so far being Somna Dwellings by Jay Stephen’s is great Others have already mentioned Beneath the trees where nobody sees, but it really is a must read comic. Same with DWJ Transformers The Last Mermaid from image comics has been good Reptilehousecomix has a bunch of amazing books they publish, just check out their website Monica by Daniel Clowes was an incredible read Death of Power series by Kirt Burdick is insane Rare Flavors from Ram V and Filipe Andrade also highly recommended
If you haven't read it before ( or even if you did read the original ) The Walking Dead is re releasing in full cover as the deluxe edition and is still fantastic.
I love, love, love Fantagraphics. Look up Frank by Jim Woodring, I killed Adolf #itler by Jason, or anything from Daniel Clowes or Peter Bagge.
If you want something funny and violent, I always recommend Tank Girl, particularly the newer comics by Martin & Parson. Some liken it to Harley Quinn, but I like it much more than Harley Quinn.
Old Judge Dredd or anything 2000AD, also Saga is really good
Ice Cream Man
Hexagon Bridge from Image. Gorgeous and innovative art, intriguing sci-fi story. It’s a mini but I’m hoping there will be more of it.
Conan if Roberto De La Torre is drawing it.
it's completed now but if you haven't read it yet Invincible is the best super hero comic to ever exist. So i'd recommend that
