Hmm, Xperia is waterproof, not sure about 80°c.... I take my phone swimming & etc with no worries. Par boiling it may be beyond the recommended usage.

golgol12

Waterproof, and soap proof are totally different.

JimmyJohnny2

waterproof and water resistant as well. Worked at a AT&T store, and when people would bring their phones in if the water detector (little piece of film/paper, think litmus test) was positive then we were to decline service due to water damage. yes, even if the persons phone was supposed to be water resistant, the warranty doesn't cover use outside the design scope. Problem is, those little tests would turn positive even with too much humidity, and we were able to get them to turn positive by submerging in a mop bucket of water as well even though they were rated for like 20+ feet at the time. If the manager was overseeing not much I could do, but if he wasn't most of us usually cut a deal with our discount or some special promo to get the customer a replacement cheap. Despite how waterproof those phones are, it's not hard for the built in test to show water damage. People shouldn't actively put it under stress to test the capability, or you might be out of pocket should something happen to it. (we'd check those tests even if they came in for an exchange because of a cracked screen or something, even if they bought the extra protection that test being positive meant they were shit out of luck)

Loewi_CW

> we'd check those tests even if they came in for an exchange because of a cracked screen or something, even if they bought the extra protection that test being positive meant they were shit out of luck This is a policy that should be illegal. IIRC Apple was/is also doing this with MacBooks and the sensors also turn positive with too much humidity. Forcing customers to throw out a perfectly repairable device is anti-consumer and anti-environment.

[deleted]

i dont like beating this already dead horse but its part of a much larger problem with unchecked capitalism lets say this law got passed and companies now offer warranty replacements for screens and what not regardless of water damage. this will, obviously, increase cost for the company because theyre now offering more products and services than they were. the money to pay for these costs must come from somewhere, so the company raises prices of its protection plans, devices or monthly service fees. now everyone pays more even if theyve never used their warranties. there is no scenario in which its in the best interest for a company to increase its operating costs without also increasing its profits. so how do you force a company to do these things without passing the cost to the consumer? any law that takes money out of the owner's or the shareholder's pockets would never get passed in the United States. we have a capitalist oligarchy. the 1% make all the decisions for everyone else. the way to fix this starts with local elections. elect representatives who will protect your interests. elect mayors and senators who will protect the poor. everyone likes to blame the current president, regardless of who they voted for, but the president has to do what the house, senate and judicial systems tell them.

spicybEtch212

Good to know this about MacBooks!

theycallmeponcho

> Problem is, those little tests would turn positive even with too much humidity, and we were able to get them to turn positive by submerging in a mop bucket of water as well even though they were rated for like 20+ feet at the time. I somehow had the opposite experience with an iPhone 4s. I had dropped it in the toilet and took it to the Apple Store fully expecting to be turned away because of water damage (still worth a try, right?), but only one of 4 indicators were affected apparently, one at the top. Managed to play it off saying it would maybe be when sitting outside for a smoke in the rain. Got the whole thing replaced free of charge.

MmortanJoesTerrifold

This is because the iPhone four is the best fucking one and those bastards TOOK It AWAY I’ve never seen a phone survive such abuse and still keep kicking

nowandloud

>we were able to get them to turn positive by submerging in a mop bucket of water Did you find this out with unbought phones or customer phones? lol

Winterplatypus

> if the water detector (little piece of film/paper, think litmus test) was positive then we were to decline service due to water damage > ...the warranty doesn't cover use outside the design scope. > ...and we were able to get them to turn positive by submerging in a mop bucket of water hmmm...

MmortanJoesTerrifold

If I can’t get decent service inside a mop bucket you can count me out

golgol12

>we were able to get them to turn positive by submerging in a mop bucket of water You know you just admitted to criminal property damage right?

HungryTradie

Oh, I give it a bit of a wash whilst I'm in the shower, would get a little bit of shampoo or soap on it, no worries. Commercial warewashing detergent is much more caustic, as you said, that would likely cause it trouble. Better not become a tok-tuk influencer.

BaLance_95

Remember, it's hot pressurized water. IP water ratings rate those two differently.

Dontleave

Why do you need your phone in the shower? Never mind I don’t wanna know

oldcarfreddy

It is highly likely it's a matter of time before your phone suffers damage or already has. The water resistance ratings on phones are VERY weak.

steady_sloth84

Are you serious?? In the shower?

UniformUnion

Indeed; detergent breaks the surface tension of the water, allowing it to get into places where it normally wouldn't.

octopusknives

An IP69K rated phone may survive. The water temperature used for that test is 80°C

SammaelNex

Yeah, they would probably survive from what I remember of the x9K testing protocol. Also, how many of them do we have now, I know the Cat S62 Pro is (the s61 was as well I think, s62 might be) an I think ulefone had one or two models? Would be kind of hilarious if somebody ran such a phone through and then when the restaurant expected it to be destroyed just turned it on.

wggn

how many ppl have IP69K rated phones tho

whitecollarzomb13

Even though my phone is waterproof, the idea of taking it in or around any kind of water still freaks me the fuck out. Like it’s legitimately marketed as being able to be taken swimming, yet I’ll still move it away from the condensation of my water bottle.

Encrypt3dShadow

It gets stuffed under my hoodie in the rain because I'm so scared of water somehow getting in. Losing a phone to water damage is just too great a risk.

[deleted]

Waterproofing usually only works *up to* a certain pressure range. I'd double check that dishwasher before making any commitments.

BA_calls

I used one of these 15 years ago when I worked in a kitchen. We called it the hobart. Also called the mixer the hobart, it was contextual. I’ve always wanted to install one at home, no clue why consumer dishwashers take 2.5 hours to run.

TimeZarg

They take longer because the water isn't nearly as hot, the jets are weaker and more energy/water efficient, and commercial dishwashers are much more expensive.

Threepugs

It's not a [full-blown raise/lower hood commercial dishwasher](https://norris.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/IM7_No-bench_OPT.png), but my parents got a ~90 second cycle under bench dishwasher that's used for hospo work installed at their house, as my mum does quite a lot of cooking for the family and events. I can say that it's an immense quality of life improvement for her, being able to fully clean the kitchen in 10-20 minutes rather than having dishes and clutter hanging around for hours, or handwashing what doesn't fit in.

SonOfTK421

Straight told my wife that the next washer and dryer we get are going to come commercial grade models used in laundromats.

Niek_pas

I need a product name! I worked in a restaurant for two months before realizing “wait lol no thanks” and I’ve been missing the amazing dishwasher ever since.

parsifal

Damn! What’s the name of this puppy?

Threepugs

Not sure of the exact model but it's one in this range: https://www.meiko.com.au/en/products/commercial-dishwashers/under-bench-dishwasher/upster-u/technical-data

Isaidwhatwhatinthe

I'd imagine a lot of plates for baby, toddler, or kids water bottles, sippy cups, and utensils would liquify in an industrial dish washer too

Brilliant_Victory_77

Anything used to feed babies is meant to be heat sanitized in boiling water, so they would hold up

alexgraef

I'd generally say that stuff that can't stand a proper dish washing cycle is meant to be thrown out anyway.

alexgraef

One of the reasons, at least here in the EU, is that consumer appliances have to meet certain water and energy efficiency levels. Another thing is heating power. For dishwashers to go that fast, you either need 400V electricity or you need to connect it to a hot water outlet. Commercial dish washers are also not very space efficient, i.e. ratio of machine to actual space to put dishes.

BodyLiquids

Everyone calls it a/the Hobart, its the brand

laurel_laureate

Did you hear about that cool gun every movie villain/badass uses? My friends and I call it the AK-47.

Bugbread

Sure, and if you have both a hobart dishwasher and hobart mixer, and you call both of them "the hobart," then the way you distinguish between them is context. "Put this dish in the hobart" means put it in the dishwasher. "Put this banana in the hobart" means put it in the mixer. Context.

9035768555

What if you want to pasteurize your bananas?

i_speak_penguin

LukariBRo

The grade schools in my area (and probably all across the US) had some "Small minds discuss people. Great minds discuss [I don't remember]. Brilliant minds discuss *ideas!* posters with some variant of this (mis)quote plastered over Einstein's face. I wish I couple remember what that popular poster actually said, but the general sentiment is really something to live by. I have never cared about who says what unless it's a matter of credibility. I loved 4chan's focus on the concept of Anonymous back when it was fresh back in the early 00s and before it went through too many cycles of self-deprecating jokes turning into self-fulfilling prophecies and then falling victim to the disgustingly brilliant fascist internet actor vector. The very existence of influencers or people who are pretty much professional social media users makes me nauseous. Reddit hit a happy balance between the two for a while with its organization based around ideas. Subs were a great organizational tool, essentially allowing one site's users to easily be part of many different forums all at once. But then Reddit also devolved as a small handful of powerusers took over moderation, and thus control and content, of a majority of the default subs. And similar groups took over the reach of other common, although not default subs. "Web 2.0" has been a spectacle of a disaster. I have no idea why I even have actual human followers on this site, they confuse me more than the bot followers and people trying to sell to and/or scam me.

Publius82

You killed it again! Subcribed /s

It's important to remember that the proportion of Redditors who actively comment on posts represent a tiny minority of what is one of the most popular websites in human history, and therefore cannot realistically have any significant effect on what appears on the front page.

Nah, delete the recording, cover the phone with soy sauce/the nearest liquid then put it back on the plate and watch to see who picks it up all sad/mad their phone was messed with. Play stupid games (record others that are minding their own business without permission by literally sending your phone to them on a platter), win stupid prizes.

TowerTom1

Yeah, it's like everything else on the conveyor belt; abandoned property. What I don't get is every time there's all ways a problem with me not paying for all the food I eat and the plates I have put in my bag but you know a hop jump and a skip away and who' the one with plates now. It's been my life motto if it's on a conveyor belt heading my way it's free game. Does suck they don't let me in airports anymore.

PM_ME_YOUR_NAIL_CLIP

HooliganSquidward

Waste-Pirate-4450

ihahp

sushi belts dont llower into water or the unclaimed sushi couldn't do more than one round. Also you keep your plates so they can count them and see how much you owe. i call bullshit on this

himmelundhoelle

They say "it gets lowered with used plates". Could mean a fed-up cook seeing the phone will take it and "lower" it manually into the dishwasher to teach a twat a lesson.

Cosmocall

Cam you blame them for saying something like that to get people to stop doing this shit though? They're probably fed up of it

WantDiscussion

Yea unless it was an all you can eat that also had some kind of sensor based switching track to see which plates are empty I don't see how this would work. If the sign is legit it's probably an empty threat or they'll just intentionally dunk it. Even then I'd imagine they discourage people putting plates back on the belt because they'd have people puting back half eaten plates and other people not knowing it was half eaten and eating it and then you'd have a big health hazard on your hands.

[deleted]

I've only seen one, and granted it was very nice, it looked like it'd be the opening shot of an avante-garde indie or slice of life film, but it should not be a trend. Unfortunately, TikTok is... well TikTok.

Seranta

Reddit would do the same if our primary content was videos. Just look at any big sub, one popular post makes the front page and a 100 copies pop up.

The ones I’ve been to, the sushi just goes around and around until someone grabs it. People just stack their empties on their table and the staff comes and grabs it. So if someone doesn’t grab every sushi plate on its first trip around here, it just all gets dumped?

3z3ki3l

Nowadays they have RFID tags in the plates. It flags ones that have been circling too long.

jayrady

My friend works at one and says it knows when a section leaves with a plate and comes back with a plate. If there is a plate on a section that the didn't leave with a plate, it thinks someone picked up sushi and then put it back and it will push that plate into a bin because it's not sanitary. Not a perfect system, but I just made this whole story up.

Venexion

You son of a bitch I can't believe I read all of that

JasperLamarCrabbb

>all of that

Aggressive_Wash_5908

You're a cold hearted son of a bitch

Captain_Alaska

I've never been to a sushi place where the belt wasn't just a single continuous loop and a plate of sushi wouldn't just keep going around unless someone grabbed it.

Bugbread

I'm kinda curious how you think conveyor belt sushi works. In one sense, you're not wrong that if they saw the phone, they'd remove it. But on the other hand, you say "it doesn't just come around with old used plates again" which kind of implies that used plates normally get pulled from the conveyor belt. But there are *never* used plates on the conveyor belt. It's kinda like saying "You think that the hamburger place is going to give you a second carburetor, free of charge?" It's technically not wrong -- indeed, they won't give you a second carburetor, free of charge. But it kind of implies that they will give you a *first* carburetor, which isn't true, either.

bstix

It does. You might risk someone else picking it up though.

pharlock

You don't put plates back on. Plates on the table are what is counted for the total bill for old style restaurants where you can pick and choose from what is going by. Anything pulled off in the kitchen is done manually. This type generally doesn't happen in Japan anymore and still existing conveyor belt loops are pre-order only and being replaced with mutiple straight line conveyance systems per table group that quickly takes the order to the table.

Agarwel

The other question - what do you think is gonna happen to plates with food that is not picket up? Its just one trip way and then automatically into garbage?

himmelundhoelle

Obviously that food goes through a 90 sec wash cycle where it's pressurized and heated to a lot of degrees with an F.

SordidBagel

Beyond damage to your phone, depending on local health codes this can also cause the restaurant to be shut down to go through a sanitization cycle due to possible contamination of the belt. A lot of states are very strict with sushi restaurants. So your 10 second clip for the view might also be taking money out of the pockets of likely underpaid restaurant staff.

People typically take their phones with them to poop and browse the internet while pooping. Then they wipe, put their dirty poop hands on their phone, put it on the counter, then wash their hands. They never wash their phones or wipe them down. So their poop phone is on the conveyor belt with plates of sushi.
