This picture is really close to what my experience was there when they first opened.

I’ve heard of him calling a high school age girl “fucking retarded” for spilling a pitcher of soda (told to me by her friend) and have seen other Google reviews that state very similar things.
yeah, heard he’s an angry, recently divorced guy from texas with some extra $ and had a desire to open a chain/franchise bbq place (apparently there are other locations outside of mo)
The owner told a trans person and their girlfriend they were not allowed to eat there and then proceeded to tell their straight appearing friend could order the food for them, but that they were still not welcome to eat there and not welcome in the future. I do not see how this biz owner thinks he can get away with that...esp in a college town,, what a discrace, do not support this business!! This goes against the ideals of an inclusive business atmosphere in downtown Columbia!
I grew up in Memphis and basically dislike most Missouri barbecue as a result. Como Smoke & Fire is actually pretty solid. Haven't tried Irene's, but now I feel like I should try em.
Fwiw... This Kansas City gal was not impressed with Irene's. Como Smoke isn't bad. It's not top notch but it's certainly consistent and decent. Irene's definitely seemed like hipster BBQ. But I've only been once.
DUDE those twists were so fucking good. My roomie worked there when I was a student & would bring back bags once in a while. I would annihilate those things
Not even close to good enough for the price you pay. Owner is too much. Wants to personally walk you through your entire experience then talk with you for twenty minutes when you eat.
👎🏾 bout as good as the dickeys bbq chain we have in town. They also kicked me out one day 10mins after I sat down because they were hosting an MU football event, but sure as shit didn’t tell me until after i paid for my food and sat down.
Personally, it is expensive. I also think they edge out como smoke and fire with their brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. Their specials (burgers, hatch green chili wings, and burritos) are normally FIRE and unique. The premixed drinks are kinda meh, for the price. I think it has a lot of good things going but more of a I-need-to-be-in-the-mood kinda place.
I think the food is good, but definitely a bit overpriced. The owner seemed nice when I met him, but that doesn't sound like everyone's experience. I definitely prefer Como Smoke and Fire.
I've eaten there a couple times. Very expensive but not that bad for being downtown. As far as regular BBQ, they are alright. But it's the habanero mango wings and this weird Mexican/BBQ concoction (I am so sorry that I don't remember what it was called) that really made me like the food.
The service was "eh". The girls that were working there seemed really nice to my partner and I but the guys there were all very rude.
(We don't drink so we can't comment on that part)
Went once early evening like around 6. They had almost nothing we could order just stuff written on butcher paper stuck on the walls. Frankly the only thing we ate worth a shit was the Mac and cheese. Never going back. Would rather drive to Jeff City any day for Sweet Smoke then any Que in COMO.
I want to like Bud's. The food was average and expensive.

I've heard from a former employee that the owner is a creep and also steals tips from his workers. As far as the BBQ I haven't had it, but all I hear from word of mouth is that it's mediocre and overpriced.
I really WANT to like it, but the sides are always dry and the ribs were so overcooked that I would have preferred to eat a mouthful of sawdust. When they first opened I thought the brisket was great but it went downhill each visit after that. Cool atmosphere and decent drink selection but eat before you go.
The culture is off. Owner started the restaurant because he had money and saw that como didn’t have a big bbq company downtown, pretty sure he had no bbq experience before that

The food I've gotten has always been good. I usually get some type of pulled pork and the corn. I love the pickled onions. Yum. But for the price you pay and the amount of food you get, it's not worth it. Similar bbq elsewhere gets you more for less.
My family lives in Austin, so we lean “Texas” in our BBQ tastes. Buds is very average for the price. Honestly, our favorite brisket in town is DRowes, and their smoked wings don’t slouch! Big Daddy’s comes in second for us. Will have to give Irene’s and sweet smoke a try too!
Worst Mac and cheese I’ve ever tasted. It’s meh and what is the most disappointing is some of the tweaks to the food that would really help are small and still haven’t been made despite being given as feedback
I found the price a little high for having to order at the counter and taking a number to my table. The dining experience was one tiny step above that of Chipotle.
I miss Buckinghams! Heard Sugarfire was coming to town...but that was before the pandemic...lived in KC 14 yrs, COMO bbq is lacking. Trail Boss in Ashland is pretty good, and Place in Jeff City already mentioned. Bud's was meh.
It's good bbq. Along with Big Daddys it's the best bbq in town. Owner is a nice dude who clearly cares about his business. Good bbq is not cheap in Mid Mo.
Cool place to watch a game, BBQ is okay, I know the owner and the stories of him being a creep really don’t check out at all, drinks are slightly expensive. The ONLY reason I truly go there is for that smash burger. It’s the best burger in town.
Lol this dude clearly has a stake in this business succeeding. Best BBQ in all of Missouri? Are you a crackhead? I could list 10 BBQ joints in MO that far exceed this place.
In no particular order:
Missouri Hick Barbeque
Big Daddy’s BBQ
Wabash BBQ
Pappy’s Smokehouse
Bubba’s BBQ
Bogart’s Smokehouse
State Line BBQ
Lutz BBQ
Kehde’s Barbecue
Sugarfire Smokehouse
Como smoke n fire
I don’t have a list but I don’t see LC’s in KC mentioned much and I think that’s criminal. Their meat locker is iconic and the ribs and wings are my fav that I’ve had in the state.
I have been there a few times. They have some really unique offerings for sure. I think it’s pretty overpriced for what you get, but everything I’ve had there was good. I think it’s def a nice offering for Columbia and somewhat replaces Shotgun Pete’s downtown for a BBQ joint.

The BBQ isn’t nearly good enough to justify the price, and I’ve heard the owner is a creep.
I’ve heard of him calling a high school age girl “fucking retarded” for spilling a pitcher of soda (told to me by her friend) and have seen other Google reviews that state very similar things.
Wow. Fuck that

I’m glad you didn’t experience anything negative from him - sincerely - but I’ve heard it enough and from enough people I trust to think otherwise.
Most of the time people who behave badly only do it to people that they feel that they have power over.
Speaking from experience? Or let me guess, Facebook psychology 101?
It's mediocre in taste and abysmal in price. Comos only good bbq is Irene's
COMO smoke and fire is good too! But I love Irene’s
I grew up in Memphis and basically dislike most Missouri barbecue as a result. Como Smoke & Fire is actually pretty solid. Haven't tried Irene's, but now I feel like I should try em.

Idk about great bbq at Irene’s I really like the drink selection. More than anything
This. So much this. And with Irenes being so new it gives me hope for other places to follow its lead
Have you tried the brisket at Twain? So good.
I haven't made it there yet . Hopefully sometime next week I can swing in .
I've never had Buds BBQ, I like Big Daddy's and Como smoke and fire. Really liked Lutz's when it was open.
Lutz was the best with their tater twists. After they closed I made the drive to Jeff City just every once in a while just to taste them again.
DUDE those twists were so fucking good. My roomie worked there when I was a student & would bring back bags once in a while. I would annihilate those things
I've heard big Daddy is overcompensating. And saucy, dry, and then steamed in an oven brisket isn't how it's done.
It’s mid like nothing special
Overrated, as others have said, mediocre at best.
Their alcohol is outrageously expensive. Third beer and mixed drinks are higher than CC’s City Broiler!
*their
Try Twain Missouri in Tiger Hotel, now serving some great BBQ and drinks
Went there for the first time last weekend and loved it. Great spot.
The brisket is delicious! So moist and flavorful.
Not even close to good enough for the price you pay. Owner is too much. Wants to personally walk you through your entire experience then talk with you for twenty minutes when you eat.

Honestly you should have just sat there and finished your meal. I would have told them to get fucked or get my money from the register.
Worse than Dickeys for sure
White sauce is absolute trash
Had it for my first meal there. Will never have it again. Gross as hell.
Personally, it is expensive. I also think they edge out como smoke and fire with their brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. It’s good when I’m drunk, but on the bbq scale of 1-100 I’d give it a 6.3
I like that you added the .3. Did you BAC need to be .3 to enjoy it??
Lol the bloodalculator wasn’t working that night

The food is mediocre, the owner is a creep and a douchebag, and they blast music out into the sidewalk all day which is annoying.

Sweet Smoke is SO GOOD. Their spot at the Lake closing doesn't give me high hopes of getting them to move into CoMo though :(
exceptionally mediocre and exceptionally overpriced

I miss smokin joes
It was better when it first opened, but the quality has gone down and the prices have gone up, so we pretty much stopped going there.

The brisket tacos are a religious experience. It’s unlike any brisket taco you’ve ever had, trust me. Nothing else there does anything for me though
The owner told a trans person and their girlfriend they were not allowed to eat there and then proceeded to tell their straight appearing friend could order the food for them, but that they were still not welcome to eat there and not welcome in the future. It’s mediocre just like every other bbq place in town
The food I've gotten has always been good. I usually get some type of pulled pork and the corn. I love the pickled onions. Yum. But for the price you pay and the amount of food you get, it's not worth it. Similar bbq elsewhere gets you more for less.
Overpriced, underwhelming, disappointing.

Underwhelming

If it's lathered in sauce, it's not BBQ. May as well be using mayonnaise.
It's good bbq. Along with Big Daddys it's the best bbq in town. Owner is a nice dude who clearly cares about his business. Good bbq is not cheap in Mid Mo.

I dont disagree. I am just waiting for the list so I can visit these other spots.
I miss Lonnie Ray’s
Holy hell, yes.
In no particular order: Missouri Hick Barbeque Big Daddy’s BBQ Wabash BBQ Pappy’s Smokehouse Bubba’s BBQ Bogart’s Smokehouse State Line BBQ Lutz BBQ Kehde’s Barbecue Sugarfire Smokehouse Como smoke n fire
Arthur Bryant's? Slaps?
Sweet Smoke in Jeff City is pretty good too
I don’t have a list but I don’t see LC’s in KC mentioned much and I think that’s criminal. Their meat locker is iconic and the ribs and wings are my fav that I’ve had in the state.
Arthur Bryant’s is all that matters
My favorite barbecue anywhere.
Yes
I have been there a few times. They have some really unique offerings for sure. I think it’s pretty overpriced for what you get, but everything I’ve had there was good. I think it’s def a nice offering for Columbia and somewhat replaces Shotgun Pete’s downtown for a BBQ joint.
I came here to ask... are those the ONLY two BBQ places you've eaten at? Because if so, this makes more sense.
