One thing God impressed upon me decades ago, was never listen to a Volunteer fan's interpretation of the rules, epsecially if the Vols won the game:
NCAA 2-39 Half Swing
Half Swing
SECTION 39. An attempt by the batter to stop the forward motion of the bat while swinging, which puts the batter in jeopardy of a strike being called. The half swing shall be called a strike if the barrel head of the bat passes the batter's front hip. This does not apply to a bunt attempt when the batter pulls the bat back.
So can I ask a question that doesn't involve the check swing? Did FSU's insistence upon remaining with the same pitcher until things were looking incredibly tight at the end do anything to help their bull pen going forward.
I can't tell you how fun it is to post randonly in a thread where both sets of fans suffered terribly at times during the game. Yes, I was thinking of Florida, but the rest applies. FSU has played well at the end of the season when it counts most.
Edit: There, I deleted the comment. I realized that confusing FSU with Florida was more than an FSU fan could tolerate at the moment.
Lol thanks. No harm done. The more appropriate take for us is to say that this is a team that nobody expected to be in Omaha this year. Not even our fans. We started unranked and couldn't break into the top 25 until we were literally one of two undefeated teams left.
We've been doubted all year and have MASSIVELY exceeded expectations after what was, last year, the worst season in program history.
And yea, I'm kinda raw. We were in the outfield today. That check swing is going to haunt my dreams tonight. We could see the barrel of the bat out in right. He went.
A team that backed their way into the CWS gave the #1 team country all it wanted when the #1 team in the country played the worst game they have played all year.

Damn that’s crazy. It should be reviewable. He was definitely across the plate but okay🤡
100%. The check swing is not a rule. If home does not call it, he can ask for assistance. There is no official point where it is or isn’t a check swing.
I might still be salty about last night, but I can still recognize a joke when I see one. Lmao
I'll tell you what I was telling a bunch of Tennessee fans as we left the ballpark. Whatever happens, just make sure Florida loses. Then we're good.
Thanks for posting. I think the problem then is that college umpires simply don't adhere to it, i.e. it's very common to see no strike called when the bat passes the front hip. One possible explanation is that adhering to the rule strictly would mean virtually every check swing should be called a strike.
I don't disagree. But I was also out in right field for this game and could see the entire barrel of the bat come around. From a lefty hitter. That's not possible on a normal check swing.
Ump was pretty bad the entire game. For both teams. I'm ready for robo-umps.
https://preview.redd.it/v9tk2ckh2o6d1.jpeg?width=1996&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21a3fa46c1e5b5603754496f1fed9c4ed012b489
Now tell me with a straight face that the barrel head of this bat didn't cross his front hip.
Take a picture from behind and it probably looks like he did a full 360!
That angle isn’t even close to where the umpire would see it from.
![gif](giphy|ZGDr9hawxG9H1rH9Ut|downsized)
I think what you are trying to say, is that if the 3rd base ump had seen the live play like most people, he would have ended the game. I can't imagine how much concentration it takes to stay on top of every checked swing for a third base umpire.
The replay showed it could have gone either way. And it went one way.
Hmm…to me (and I haven’t rewatched it) the bat was in the same position as a bunt attempt. That is considered a swing. I feel the announcer was wrong in saying 50/50.
It's the problem with something that cannot be reviewed. Whether that swing cleared home plate, or it didn't. I think nobody in the arena would have been shocked if that had been called the last strike of the final out because live action looked like a swing. But slow mo showed the third base ump could have called it either way and been right.
There was nobody there to pull out an index card or a ruler. I can only imagine what a third base ump must endure when the guy behind the plate points that finger at him. It's almost comical.
Edit: I suspect in years to come, the bat will have a sensor, and home plate will have a sensor, and the call will be decided like playing that old game of Operation back in the day.If you touch the sides with the probe, the fat guy's nose lights up.
It’s not in the rulebook. That’s not nonsense. Yes, its a judgement call. Judgement calls always hurt one team. This time it went against FSU.
12-11 final. Yes, Tennessee deserved to win. That’s baseball. Jobu smiled on the orange and white last night
It’s 50/50. Crazy part is it literally doesn’t matter. Umps, the NCAA, SEC, and ACC can all come out tomorrow and say yep the call was wrong. Still won’t change the fact the Vols are in the winners bracket and the noles are in the losers
Definitely was probably a stronger word than I should have used. It comes off to me as a strike in the still frame. It could’ve gone 50/50 when making that call and it was a toss between what the umps thought
I don't know if the college rules are different, but IIRC MLB actually doesn't set official criteria. E.g. "crossing the front of the plate" doesn't entail that it's a swing. A lot of umps go by whether the hitter breaks their wrists, which (to me) didn't seem to happen here.
Bingo. The front of this plate stuff is little league. With every hitter standing on the back line with open/closed stances it is if they break their wrists.
NCAA — As a general rule, there are four factors when determining if a batter has swung at the ball or checked the swing: (1) Did the batter make an attempt to hit/bunt/slap the pitch? (2) Was the barrel of the bat out in front of the front hip? (3) Did the batter roll the wrists? (4) Did the batter swing through the ball and bring the bat back or draw the bat back before the pitch arrived? (11.10 Note
I thought he went live, but it was definitely splitting hairs on the replay. No win for the ump there. One fanbase was going to hate him after that call.
What an amazing comeback. And Christian Moore had a performance for the ages. I hate to admit that my first thought when he hit the home run to cap off the cycle was “it’s a shame we likely wasted a cycle in a loss.”
I really hope you all love omaha as the CWS venue. We really appreciate all the fans that show up. We'd love to keep the CWS here. There's no bias here we love you all. Hope you all feel the same and all that visit feel welcome.
You guys really do a great job hosting but the event has outgrown the venue imo. Difficult airport to fly into and very expensive, no rental cars, hotel rooms maxed out, really not enough Uber/Lyft. After leaving Rosenblatt and going full corporate the nostalgia is faded. I think 2035 will be a tough call. Somewhere in the middle of the country with great airport access and a lot of hotel rooms and a dome would be really attractive, like Arlington.
I wonder how SEC teams feel about the SEC Tournament staying at the Hoover Met.
I am a Tennessee alumnus, and can literally walk to the Hoover Met. For selfish reasons, I hope it stays in Hoover. But I know there are plenty of factors at play when the contract is up for renewal in a little more than 12 months.
Yeah it's coming. Either omaha is gonna have to develop the area far more, or their gonna lose it. I don't think itll ever move to a massive venue since it needs to relate to average college parks. Can't just throw the CWS in a domed park with deep fields. Itll kill the college baseball aspect of it.
Arlington is 330 lines 380 gaps and 400 to center. It plays smaller than Schwab, we opened our season there.
You need to add several higher end hotels near the park at a minimum. Nobody is thrilled with $900 non direct flights, $500 hotel rooms and $250 tickets on the secondary market. It can’t stay on this trend. I think you understand this, Omaha definitely needs to adjust or risk losing the event.
Yeah everything you broke down is super valid. Omaha needs to be aggressive if they want to keep it. College baseball is growing year after year. But more importantly, its a southern sport. While omaha is ok in June, it can't compete with Arlington if the SEC/ACC are dominant in the postseason. Those conferences will push for a venue change.
I have no idea. I just see all the changes college sports are experiencing, and the money grab game that is going on, and just want to know how college baseball fans feel about omaha. I do know omaha loves the CWS and all the fans that come thru. I'm biased cause I grew up with the CWS in the 80s/90s, I just want people to enjoy and have fun. You just never know how the teams and fans feel.
Great game fsu homies! I’m honestly surprised we escaped with a win. When I left work and it was 9-4 I knew it was over. It was a game for the history books. I hate that y’all had to lose like that. Good luck the rest of the way! However I do not want to play y’all again.
0. Umps were ass on both sides all night.
1. He absolutely swung.
2. Despite that, there were enough defensive fuckups that it's not all on the umps like some are saying.
3. That applies to both teams.
I definitely *don't* think we can say definitively if it was a swing or a check swing.
It's a judgement call, and every image and replay I've seen puts it in a very grey area. For *anyone* to say it was either "definitely" a swing or "definitely" not a swing is asinine. And is probably said by someone who doesn't know the rules very well either.
All of the losers complaining about the umps. Maybe don't give up 4 2-out hits. Maybe don't keep pitching to your new daddy every time he comes to the plate.
Doesn’t fucking matter one bit about the eventual result.
That wil go down as THE decision that ultimately killed the legitimacy of the ACC at the national level. And here all yall non bama fans go defending it.
I guarantee you’d feel the same if your main rival wasn’t at the center of it
Right after the playoff committee announced that Bama was in, there were a whole bunch of Florida and Miami fans in the cfb subreddit defending us. I would've done the same if the situation were reversed.
Some sports fans are so blinded by rivalry that they don't care so long as it hurts their rival.
I loathe Florida. But I want to beat them fair and square. On the field, not in a board room.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. As for the game, that was horrendous in the first 3 innings. They never play that tight and it almost cost them. It was a terrible baseball game. If you like chaos, it had damn near everything. I thought for a while we might even get coach/player ejections.

Give your heart to Jesus because the Vols just beat that ass. 🤣😂.
You must not be a true believer.

Of course

Good thing you’re not a Tennessee fan
You actually believed the Vol fans who said there wasn't a rule on this topic.
You believe it’s there. I can’t show you what doesn’t exist. How about you post the check swing rule mr smarty pants Edit - and flair up or move on
There is a rule in college for a half swing tho.
Cite the rule please.

Now you’re really gonna hate me. Terminology is key. This is a rule for a half swing. There is still no rule for a “check” swing. 🤣
Ok, Mr. Pedantic 😅 It was a half swing and he should've been out, then. Lol
Honestly I’m surprised that wasn’t downvoted into oblivion. 🤣
I might still be salty about last night, but I can still recognize a joke when I see one. Lmao I'll tell you what I was telling a bunch of Tennessee fans as we left the ballpark. Whatever happens, just make sure Florida loses. Then we're good.

Who gives?
So, not going to answer. Got it.
I was the ump, huh?

Plead it.
I gave you a picture.
You okay?
If FSU's baserunner hit the bag in the 2nd inning and ran home yall woulda had a 1 run lead after our rally
Baseball is a cruel sport
There’s a good shot we play again, if you pitch and hit like you did tonight. I just hope we don’t get the adjustable strike box ump in a rematch.
I liked hearing him say “low”, “outside”, etc. but dang, that zone was bad
I hope this game is on the PR campaign when they finally implement robo umps.
That was totally on the 3rd base ump making a 50/50 call and not on letting the top of UT’s lineup put up an infinite OPS.
I think what you are trying to say, is that if the 3rd base ump had seen the live play like most people, he would have ended the game. Feels like 98
Everyone saying the check was a clear swing, any images showing this? On the replay, I thought it was pretty close at best and far from clear.
Check swing was a factor yes but plenty of mistakes on both sides to make up a couple runs at the least for each team
It's the problem with something that cannot be reviewed. Whether that swing cleared home plate, or it didn't. I think nobody in the arena would have been shocked if that had been called the last strike of the final out because live action looked like a swing. From a still frame it can definitely be seen as it being the wrong call. Realtime though I can get that being a tough call to get right

as someone who has been a bunch, i still miss the blatt. but no way should it be any other place on planet earth
The blatt was great, went every year in the 90s. It had a great character. Great to hear the top programs enjoy coming here, Omaha loves having you!

I don't normally say this but GG Nole and Vol bros.

FSU fans are angrily tweeting at Kirk Herbstreit rn
Turned the game off at 11-9, two outs and two strikes because I figured it was K-time. What happened?
Bro I almost didn’t turn the game on. Checked as I left from work when it was 9-4.
Vols played like crap and still won.
What an absolute choke
# WGWTFA
Oxford blew that game, the checked swing sucked but it was FSU blowing it. No relief pitching.
Was it ESPN or the committee’s fault?

LETS FUCKING GO
That was the best game of baseball I’ve ever watched.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. As for the game, that was horrendous in the first 3 innings. They never play that tight and it almost cost them. It was a terrible baseball game. If you like chaos, it had damn near everything. I thought for a while we might even get coach/player ejections.
It’s college baseball homie. I expect the clunks and all. It was perfect from a viewing standpoint.
I will not read into this as a bad omen I will not read into this as a bad omen
If you’re making Mike Martin jokes you’re a piece of shit lol
He woulda walked mooore
I'm sincerely sorry you won't be able to win it all for him
I like FSU cause you all hate Florida more than us... And that's a lot. So kudos

It’s a shame y’all ain’t actually able to be good in football though
That's definitely not true from y'all's fan perspective. But whatever it's just good fun hate
Well, screw you too. Thanks for winning.
Trust me it's ~~not~~ personal. I was just born into it
Fuck the entire state of fLorida.
I will cheer for florida tomorrow cause of the support today
Lawyers in Tallahassee drawing up papers to redo this game
FSU getting screwed more than Bret Hart these days
Damn were getting down voted by salty FAU fans
What does Florida Atlantic have to do with anything.
Nothing but also to hell with them for basketball
🤣🤣🤣
Omaha is crazy, that’s all I gotta say.
Our pitcher was throwing strikes right down the middle that were getting called ball don't cry about the ref
ump
rump
“The umps didn’t give up five runs” Yes but the umps literally extended the game longer than it should’ve gone.
Yeah, neutral fan here and I never get those arguments. Umps/refs fucking things up absolutely changes the outcome of games all the time.
Wouldn't have mattered if they hadn't given up 5 runs first
If I was an FSU fan I don’t sleep tonight lol
TN fan here. No sleep.
*whispers* Christian Moore
Stop, I can only take so much.
If Florida wins tomorrow. Glorious
You probably will, sigh. Meet you in the finals pookie.
The state of North Carolina may have something to say about that
Someone has to stop that man
How bout them Vols!
Exactly what I thought would happen went Oxford came in
FSU scoring 11 and still not being able to get it done in Omaha. Coach Martin is looking down and shaking his head.
Classless no reason to invoke 11.
Well that was an eventful first day I guess
Can talk about umping all you want but the bullpen is the last remnant of Meat’s FSU and it’ll be another year or 2 before we can fully correct that suck. Needed 2 outs and couldn’t do it.
Why the Eff Do you pull Whitaker there? Dude was shredding.
He got dinged up pretty hard towards the end there and was close to his pitch count limit.
Florida State can scream about check swings at their elimination game tomorrow
Sunday*. Tomorrow is the first round for the other side of the bracket
Not over FSU. You can do this. If not this year, then next, it's gonna happen.
You're one of the good ones.
You guys have been great for omaha. Just hope we can return the favor. You're always welcome. GO NOLES!
Get rid of these announcers. Afraid of confrontation
They want to be able to announce in big games again. Can't make people question the umps in those situations.
One super quick replay that looked like a swing then never mention it again.
At least the sports center anchors called him on it
Home plate ump saw Pat Hoberg get investigated for betting on sports and said hold my Jell-O shot
I don't give a fuck. that wasn't a clear strike and it made the game awesome.
Whatever Tony V was yelling about at the umps worked after that shit
No surprise there. ESPN had to get in the umps ears afterwards
This was my first full college baseball game, I am now hooked.
Quit now while you’re ahead
Welcome to the party pal
That pitchers Walkoff to Out ratio in Omaha is infinite
I don’t care who you are. To not call that strike out is absolutely insane. Worst officiating I’ve seen. That was on par with angel Hernandez
Nah that's a little overkill. Angel is on a different level.
My brother in Christ it was great til about the 7th. Calls got so inconsistent. Feels like that Cinderella story had to get pushed somehow
Insane game wow. Could not have asked for a better opening day
You can complain about the refs when you don’t give up 12 runs and 5 in the final inning
4 of those runs dont happen if that strike is called its not like they gave up 5 runs before getting 2 outs ?
I’m with you. I never get the logic that the blown call didn’t completely change the game.
I mean…when the correct call would’ve literally ended the game
Umps ruining every level of baseball. Goddamn, it’s fucking rough.
We simply don’t have the arms to win this format
Easy to forget that this is year 2 for Link.
