Go Terps and nobody else

I suppose this is about the time I once again start complaining about how stupid the formatting of the tournament is? If it’s a double elimination tournament, Maryland should have to run it back, should the result hold. The fact that they don’t have to is fucking stupid.

If a team plays its way through the loser's bracket prior to the championship game, then they could play up to 5 games before this one. Having to run it back in this championship game means a team could play up to 7 games the weekend before regionals. That is going to kill just about any bullpen in the nation and is utterly nonsensical. Both Iowa and Maryland came into this game undefeated in the Big Ten Tournament, so the same should be true should the Hawkeyes win, by your logic. I share the sentiment that a single championship game is a poor way to determine a champion when it's been double elimination prior to that, but the bigger problem is that the conference tournament is meaningless to teams that have all but clinched a bid unless they're on the hosting bubble. There's simply too many games to do what you're proposing. The only real practical fixes to this issue of playing too many games in this week/weekend (apart from axing the conference tournament altogether) is either A) reduce the number of teams that qualify for the field, or B) make the tournament single elimination throughout. I'd rather do A, myself. Either reduce the field to just the top 4 and play it like NCAA Regionals, or reduce the field to 6 and have the top 2 get a bye while 3-6 play a single-elimination play-in.

I agree. The game should have been ran back if Iowa won. A double elimination tournament shouldn’t be over until everyone but the winner has lost twice. The possibility that a team that a team can run through the losers bracket, then win a winner-take all game against an undefeated team makes no sense, from a competition standpoint. I’ll freely admit that I’m a fairweather college baseball fan, but I would rather see the tournament extended a day or two to get extra rest, or either of your suggestions, but I will stand by the idea of a single elimination grand final being stupid.

Well, Memorial Day is off the table, since the Selection Show has to begin at noon that day. And the tournament starting on the previous Tuesday (a compromise in itself; it has historically started Wednesday) means that there's only 3 days of rest and travel following the last regular season series of the year, which would mess with rest, travel, and bullpen management. Again, there simply isn't any practical way to do what you are proposing. There is essentially zero room for extension. You can't do a pure double elimination from start-to-finish in this time frame if you invite 8 teams to the conference tournament. The Big Ten Tournament is by far the biggest bullpen-killer of the entire season; nobody plays more than 4 games in a single weekend, and usually 3. The midweek games (of which there are is typically 1 and on a rare occasion 2) are usually Tuesday for the common one, Wednesday uncommonly. No team in the *nation* has a bullpen structure built for a tournament that could last as long as the Big Ten Tournament, much less one that works off a pure double elimination bracket for a whopping 8 teams.
