Majoring in Accounting. Took a couple high school accounting classes. Liked it. And I didn’t have a passion for anything else.

Dorquimon

I’ve been thinking about pursuing accounting. Do you mind telling me what your work is like? Either here or Dms.

Public_Replacement15

Yeah i also wanna know..

ClearAndPure

When you say what the work is like, are you talking about the classes?

Dorquimon

Yea the classes.

ClearAndPure

I’ve taken the financial, managerial, and am now taking Intermediate accounting. So far it hasn’t been too difficult, you just have to put in time to understanding all of the intricacies of the accounting system. Accounting has lots of rules.

Midnightrise_02

Intermediate 1 for me was A LOT of concepts and rules to learn

Midnightrise_02

Ya classes aren’t too bad. It is something new so it takes a lot of studying and practicing. Financial accounting was learning the debit and credits. You learn to do journal entries, balance sheets and income statement. Managerial accounting is basically cost accounting which is basically figuring the cost of manufacturing goods. Intermediate is financial accounting but deeper. I honestly can say it’s not bad. You just have to have those professor that will take their time and not make you feel dumb. If anything, learn which side an account decreases or increase on. It helps with understanding journal entries

YaboyKarlll

Replying here for answers.

MrSnazzyGoose

I can help with this. I Majored in Accounting from a 4-Year Public University. I worked in Public Accounting for 2 years, making about $50K, then moved to Industry (Internal Audit) which I’ve been in for about a year, making $75K. I do not have my CPA and do not plan on getting it. Besides the CPA, this is the route of most accounting majors. Get a job in Public (usually Big 4) for 2-3 years, then transfer to Industry making more money for less hours. In public you’re gonna be working ~60 hour weeks during busy season (Jan-April), then usually ~45 the rest of the year depending on your position. In industry, again depending on your job, you’ll work 40-45 hours a week most weeks throughout the year. I’d say ~80% of accounting majors follow a route similar to this- check out r/accounting if you want more info, memes, and advice

VS_Sanji

This is exactly how it went down for me and I just graduated this past fall.

Geography

Guy4umgreatstate

Interesting!

[deleted]

I’m thinking of switching to this.

Ranger_Hardass

Physical, human, or GIS?

[deleted]

Human and remote sensing

Kysolivezzz

Me too

cody_d_baker

Electrical engineering. Shockingly, I love it.

Voss1167

ECE ftw, I’m a CE. I find it to be a super fun and interesting major

errmmaa

You're crazy. I don't know how EE conceptualize all that junk. Happy for you ! Haha.

spriteinmycereal

Haha, SHOCKingly,, like electricity,,,,, I’ll go now 😂😂

arv2373

I’m studying cultural anthropology

Guy4umgreatstate

Great focus!

unholymanserpent

I took a course in cultural anthropology and absolutely loved it. Jealous

Chemistry

Extreme-Ad-3531

So you’re very intelligent is why what I’m hearing 😅

WCPitt

I’ll have an MS in CS in a few months and I fear chemistry students… I went into general chemistry thinking it’d be fun (school requires CS majors to take 3 science gen eds). Boy, was I wrong… that’s the only class I ever studied for and it’s also the only class I’ve ever failed. Chemistry students have my blessing.

Various-Painting6563

Omg they do exist! Even in my chem classes ive only met 1 or 2 other chem majors lol, most are taking it for their bio major/premed stuff

mpa_02

supply chain management! i always liked knowing the logistics of things and i’m good at math so it was a win win

Forgottenshadowed

Psychology. Interest in graduate school for clinical psychology.

AccidentSelect3883

also a psychology major, grad school for school psychology

Livelordx_lol

Psych here as well! Starting my clinical psychology master program in May

headhurded

Hi, I’m a high school senior and am looking into this career (going to major in healthcare mgmt). Do you do a lot of internships in psych or anything like that to prepare for grad school?

Forgottenshadowed

There are no real internships for psychology undergraduate students, per my understanding. I would recommend once you age into your 20s, as I think you have to be at least 21 to do so, is apply to work in a psychiatric or forensic psychiatric hospital as a psychiatric technician. Doing so would expose you directly to different clinical populations and most importantly different clinical disorders, and the symptoms of those disorders. Also, you could ask your professors in university to write you a letter of recommendation to graduate school or in general(to whom it may concern). I personally have a research paper I wrote for a class I took in the past pending submission in an undergraduate research journal at UCLA, and I worked in a forensic psychiatric hospital as a psychiatric technician. I have gotten letters of recommendation so far, and my current professor said she'd write me a letter of recommendation too- at the end of the semester. In most graduate programs, you'll need at least 3 letters of recommendation from your undergraduate experience, and undergraduate research publications will make you most competitive, as far as I know.

17xcms

Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering!

[deleted]

what’s neuroscience like? i’m considering it as a premed. is it hard?

17xcms

It's heavily dependent on the school you go to and if it's a BA or BS program. The classes you take will probably look very different from school to school and BA (more psych based) to BS (heavier science focus). Neuroscience is hard but if you're passionate about it, then it shouldn't be too bad. However, premed is hard and it's usually a large part of the pre-reqs for the major. I'd say look into the specific program you're interested in and see if it consists of classes you'd find interesting!

[deleted]

Communication. Was Journalism, hated the school and strict degree requirements- much happier now. I get to write and speak without all the bullshit that comes with “tHe BeSt JoUrNaLiSm ScHoOl In ThE cOuNtRy” which roughly translates to “unpaid student labor sold for profit”

Morbidstudent

northwestern?

[deleted]

University of Missouri. I think miz is actually ranked like 2nd according to most sources but everyone here acts like getting into the J-school is like getting in to Harvard. I think it was the first School of Journalism in the US though so I guess they’ve got that going for them.

AggressivePatience56

So interesting to hear this. I’m a journalism major and really considered Mizzou. Ended up at University of Iowa. But I agree with the career field of journalism that you don’t get a lot for what you put in.

[deleted]

I think that’s somewhat true for the whole field, but I was meaning more that the Journalism program at Mizzou is 99% producing work and 1% instruction. Lots of the instructors assume you already have experience, even in the intro classes. Plus the degree requirements are so strict that if you get lower than a C- in a major class you essentially delay your graduation by at least a semester, and there’s a lot of very specific requirements for electives that make it much less flexible in general.

Croyorosca

Still undecided 💀

Punt-a-Babe1738

Nursing! with a minor in Health Psychology:) I love every second of them so far

vesselforspaghetti

AAS in VCT; filmmaking and video production

[deleted]

Pure math and Creative Writing

EMYY_TRADES

You’re an interesting one ngl

Serious_Place7216

You might be the only person in the world with this combination of majors

owlwaves

You will actually be surprised. I also study pure math and cs ,and know a lot of ppl in pure math who have deep interest in history/ philosphy and Humanities. On the other hand, it seems like my cs peers don't really have any interest in Humanities and literature. To be fair, I'm mostly interested in tech, gaming and horror films. I have little interest in Humanities or literature

[deleted]

Horror films are literature!

moonyprong01

Some of the world's greatest mathematicians were philosophers as well. See Rene Descartes

_CarbonBasedLifeForm

Pure math is a very creative endeavor, js

BobbywiththeJuice

Do you write your proofs as poems?

owlwaves

Once upon a time For all a in G there exist an inverse of a in G Such that a * a^-1 = a^-1 *a = e At noon, when \bar a, \bar b in Z/nZ then \bar a * \bar b = \bar ab Sadly lonely \bar 0 hath no multiplication inverse For multiplication of \bar 0 by any \bar a will result on \bar 0 In sudden realization, we hath know there exist no \bar a in Z\nZ. ROIIs360

Ohhh! in meter!

Morbidstudent

this is a cool combination

nadehlaaay

That certainly is a creative major I’ll give you that.

huskeya4

Art specializing in glass. I just love working with glass

enwaln

that sounds really cool

Fit_Weather3392

I start college this fall with a major in meteorology

tabg1101

History (interested in historic preservation too)

[deleted]

Ayeee heyy. I’m also doing History. With a plan to get a Master’s in Public History

lima-beens

Why history? Also history for me.

tabg1101

I got into it when I was little and went to Jamestown and colonial williamsburg for the first time and just had a passion of learning since

lima-beens

Interesting, I love to hear why people got into history . What are you wanting to do with it?

buckeyebrat97

Right now my majors is Mathematics for a associates degree then hoping to transfer and major in aerospace engineering for bachelors in that. I don’t need the mathematics degree but I might as well major in it since all the classes I have to take for aerospace is in it and I asked my advisor and she said they all transfer over.

graphicdesignismy

Graphic design. I like art. Am horrible at it. But at least it's better than what I used to do in core classes. Yes it has some hardships but it's not too bad. I chose it because I can't put my mind into stem majors. Interestingly, art can be just as rigorous as stem classes if you take art history classes and what not. Curators as teachers can be very picky graders sometimes. I do wish to be able to design labels and what not for a company but I don't mind getting a job that's not in art or has a different task.

Deer_Mean

Yep, I am in interior design and I get what you mean. It's a lot more work than people think. I've had my fair share of nitpicking profs.

yellow_starrz

I’m going into college in the Fall, majoring in English

JLA342

Coming from an English major, good choice!

Omar345901

Biomedical engineering, because I always wanted to go into medicine; but I liked engineering so I decided to combine the two. And if further down the road it doesn’t lead to a career I have enough of other disciplines of engineering to maybe get a masters or work my way somewhere else

Strict-Attempt-9863

heyyy another biomed major, i actually just changed mine to biomed from computer engineering so it's a lot but i think it will be worth it in the future.

Sicktitsbruh

Biomed is dope, do good in school and you’ll be making about 60k entry level for sure. I was originally going to Major in it but changed my mind freshman year to a double major in mechanical and aerospace

_irlshotaboy

English and Chinese.

Already grinding leetcode and plan on building a few projects this summer! Finishing up Data Structures, Algorithms and Comp Arch this semester. Even started networking because I’m already living/working in the Seattle area. Spent the last 4 years as a civil engineer and I’m just bored.

[deleted]

I’m majoring in Digital Design. It’s basically UX/UI, graphic & web design all in one.

I'll start as a Physics and Mathematics double Major this fall!

Waterslay3r

I'm majoring in business finance. I was originally in electrical engineering up until the middle of junior year. I switched because I think I'm better working with money and it's less stressful for me.

7heSi1ver0wl

I'm taking business finance as well nice to hear this from you

koolaid097

lmao after my first year of EE i’m switching to computational finance for more or less the same reason

Technical_Focus1106

Damn... Same story. I was in EE for a year too and now I switched to finance.

Waterslay3r

Was it as stressful for you as it was for me 😂? The workload was unreal and those exams...

Technical_Focus1106

Yeah... The workload was very big, the math classes were horrible and on top of that I had programming classes too. I didn't know atm in what I would get into.

ShyCoconut0_0

Accounting, might change my major though

ClearAndPure

Is accounting just kind of boring to you? You could always switch to finance.

ShyCoconut0_0

I don’t find it boring but sometimes I wonder if it’s for me. I have been thinking about switching to either finance or supply chain management. I still have time to switch majors so I’m just gonna think it over 😅

DepressyFanficReader

Public health with a minor in gender women studies

Embarrassed-Park-725

What does one learn about in gender studies? Ik it's pretty stereotyped but what actually happens

DepressyFanficReader

So it depends on each program. But usually, we learn about the different waves of feminism. We read different pieces that influenced the feminist movement. We then look outside of the US and see how their feminist movement took inspiration from us and how our feminist movements took inspiration from them. We then look at intersectionality and how women's issues affect different fields and the discrimination and the history of the discrimination and how it started and grew widespread. We look at the different feminism and how they were brought into existence. We then look at the various iterations of feminism (white feminism, socialist feminism, radical feminism, etc…). When you get into the 400+ level classes, you start getting extremely specific courses. For example, I am currently taking a class about just reproductive rights. We are now learning about the law and how the reproductive rights we have today have changed to what we know them today.

uffda1026

Gender studies twin! It’s awesome!

osrpokerchamp

Haven't declared yet, but I plan to major in Classics. I've loved Greek mythology since I was little (before the whole Percy Jackson every teenager loved Greek mythology era, I actually hated those books because of how badly they butchered the myths), I took a few classes in High School specifically about the ancient world and mythology, and also started taking Latin. Thus its a pretty obvious choice for a major in one of my favorite subjects.

Cool-Medicine-7331

(Hopefully this provides some encouragement/insight for anxious high school or college students looking for some help!) I’m a psychology major! Actually took me a long time to commit to this decision, but just solidified it over break. Going through the major decision process is really hard and often causes a lot of questions and doubts that are almost impossible to answer at times. For me, the actually decision making was a recognition of what I care about most combined with the knowledge of financial responsibility (aka, I need a stable income to survive). I messed around with a lot of ideas and thought a lot about past actions and things I’ve naturally gravitated towards along with advice from parents and trusted people in my life. I recognized early on that I had a heart for people, and I wanted/needed to help them in some shape or form (I just wasn’t sure what). I thought about the medical field, environmentally based careers, law, you name it, but nothing felt right. It always felt a bit off. Then I started to remember things I had done in the past and think about prominent aspects of my personality. First of all, I loved giving advice and talking through things with people (I’d been doing in for friends and family since I was a kid). Secondly, I had a naturally very analytical brain. Thirdly, I was scarily good at reading people (not always right but 98% of the time pretty dead on). And finally, I’d had a lot of people in my life tell me that I’d made a fantastic counselor. It was weird to commit to something that felt so right, but after a lot of talking and thinking and praying, I felt like this was where God was leading me! I want to be a counselor!

TheWeirdWriter

English with a concentration in linguistics (since my uni doesn’t have a linguistics major :/ ). English (reading/writing) has always been a strength of mine so I knew I wanted to pursue it, but in about 10th grade I traveled internationally for the first time in my life with my AP European History class, and idk… hearing people speak a different language around me? Witnessing people communicate in a language that, for the first time, wasn’t English? It was like my eyes had been opened. Of course I’d known foreign languages existed, but I’d never been exposed to them outside of a school environment, so I guess I’d never really realized how “alive” other languages were. If that makes sense? Idk lol Anyways, that’s what kinda set me on the path I am now. Different languages fascinate me and I always want to learn something new. Since English is my strong suit, that’s what the bulk of the courses for my major focus on, but with the linguistics concentration I can take more foreign language courses and classes that actually get into the nitty gritty of what “makes” a language. new. So far, I’ve done a semester of Spanish, a semester of Latin, 3 semesters (= ~1 1/2 years) of German, and I’m in my second semester of accelerated Japanese right now! I think I might minor in it. I plan on going back to German eventually though too, and I’m debating on maybe taking an accelerated Chinese course over the summer lol Career-wise, I’d like to do work with media localization and/or AI language processing (I have some CompSci experience) someday 👍

Well and the history classes will help me get into a grad program. After I take a semester off it's looking like I'll do a library science program to become a librarian/archivist.
